10.4.9 won't start (boot)
Hey, another big problem with the lovely 10.4.9 update. I installed it along with iTunes and iPhoto, restarted as required and now it won't even get me to the login window, it just stays spinning the gear for minutes without change.
I've already tried the Disk Utility and found no problems on the drive. My Windows partition appears to be working just fine.
What can I do???? Can I do something to OSX from my Windows partition?? Do you think I could install the standalone version from there?? I REALLY want to avoid reinstalling the OS.
Thanks a lot!

Solved my problem. This guy Igor Minar posted a great guide for this exact problem and fixed it in no time. (And to think I was seconds away of formatting :D)

Mac Pro 1,1 won't start/boot up
Hi all,
I have a big problem with my Mac Pro 1,1 (2,66 Core, 6GB Ram) - it does not start up.
I tried to boot in safe mode, but boot process stopped (spinning circle freezes). Then I tried to boot in single user mode and checked the Harddrive with fsck... The Drive was modified and seems to be okay. But the mac won't start. I tried to boot from the original Snow Leopard DVD and i got an Kernel Panic. Then I tried to get access to myy Harddrive via Target Disk mode but the Harddrivw wasn't accessable for my Powerbook G4 which I used has the Host Computer.
I've resettet the PMU and the Ram - nothing helped.
When I start in Verbose Boot, the Mac shows the following Info:

Can anybody help me? Any Ideas?
Thank you !!!Yes, that is what I wanted to know, and tells me it isn't with the hard drive or OS itself.
Not to fear, even English doesn't quite cut it at times.
I assume also you tried with ONLY minimum necessary:
mouse, keyboard and power to computer along with monitor.
If you have your OEM DVD that came with Mac Pro originally, that will not ever boot with original OS, your 8800GT requires 10.5.2 or later OS DVDs.
Your OEM DVD though does have Apple Hardware Test.
Hold 'D' on startup
See if that passes Extended Test.
And if you already did so, no need to do so again, repeated resetting SMC isn't a good idea. But unplug power and hit ON for 8 seconds (nothing happens) and then reconnect power and mouse/kb.
Make sure the 8800GT power is connected and card is (still) firmly seated.
Do a general check of everything, including Risers with RAM. -
Network won't start @ boot since recent hotplug update
Hello All,
The recent hotplug update rendered my network inoperable. Previous to the recent hotplug update network had no issues at all.
At boot, the network daemon is returning FAILED (in all red)
FYI: I tried the Wiki site before posting but it's down for some reason.
As root, if I manually "network start", usually it fires up, occasionally it does not, and requires a second attempt. It has never failed beyond the second attempt.
Action Taken: In the rc.conf file I removed hotplug. After reading some threads here, it looks like many of you have done the same thing. I put the required modules I know my system needs into the modules section of the rc.conf file, in the order that they are needed.
The result? No change in behaviour! I still have to login as root, and issue a "network start" to get the thing on it's feet. After that... it's smooth sailing.
I noticed in the network script itself a sleep 2 statement. I know what this does, but I wonder if the new setup that came down the wire with this AM's pacman -Syu, needs another one of these sleep statements somewhere else in the network shell script.
Suggestions and assistance is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Dave Babbfirst, what are the stats on your machine - if it's slower, it *is* possible that the module isn't fully probed at the time of the network request.

finally, after the network fails, try pinging something before you issue a network start again - it is possible that the script may be failing at some minor part while still starting the network (this would be due to permissions on some files/dirs most likely... perhaps the dhcp pid/cache files???)
ping fails to anyone. It responds with "Network is Unreachible"
Remember, when I log in as root, from the console, and issue a "network start", the network then fires up and operates normally.
Thanks for your help.

Windows 7 Won't Start Up from Boot Camp
I got a new 21.5" iMac and set up a boot camp partition for a Windows 7 64-bit installation. It worked. I installed the latest boot camp drivers into the Windows 7, which was wonderful because it fixed the display to match my iMac's specs. Then I installed the latest Parallels 5 and had it recognize that Windows 7 system, and have been using it without problem. But I tried this evening to use boot camp to start up the Windows 7 system by itself and although I got a choice of Mac OS or Windows via the option-startup process, and selected the Windows startup, Windows 7 won't start up that way. I just get a black screen with a blinking white horizontal line in the upper-left corner. I keep waiting but it never gets past this. Tried turning it off and starting again, still no luck. Booted back into Mac side and Parallels VM of the installation still works.
Any help appreciated. I should still be able to boot into Windows 7 straight using boot camp, no?I should add that I just installed 8GB of RAM to the 4GB the iMac came with. Possibly now that the total machine has a 12GB of RAM the Windows 7 system is confused and can't start up?

Won't start in Install Disk, Safe Boot or AppleJack
Machine works fine except that when I insert Install Disk in effort to use First Aid (by holding C down) it doesn't recognize the disk.
Also, won't Safe Boot (starting with Shift held down), zap PRAM or AppleJack. Just ignores instructions, opens normally. Have Onyxd and Repaired Disk Permissions but no change.
All somewhat worrisome. Any ideas?
Timif you see a lock when you reboot with the option key pressed it means you have a firmware password set. that's what preventing you from being able to boot from the install disk, single user mode etc. you need to enter your firmaware password on the screen with the lock and it will let your through to the startup disk manager. you can boot from the DVD there. if you want to boot into Single User mode to run Applejack then you need to turn off the firmware password first. that's done from the install DVD using the firmware password utility in the Utilities menu.

My iMac won't start up. I've tried holding all kinds of key combinations while I turn it on, but it doesn't even get that far. It gets stuck on a folder with the Apple picture alternating with a question mark. It doesn't do anything else for a while, and then the fan turns on (???).
This is indicative of a corrupted system or drive. The first thing to try is:
Repairing the Hard Drive
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this doesn't solve the problem then you will have to reinstall OS X. If the drive tests out OK per the above then you can reinstall without erasing the hard drive:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

I'm Ubam, I have been using Macbook pro 500gb 5400-rpm hard drive, 4gb of 1333mhz DDR3 SDRAM, 2.4GHz dual core Intel core i5 processor; for 2yrs now.
The problem i'v encountered now is, I pressed the power button to shut down & it did, so now it won't start up, so I tried putting it on but everytime I press the power button it shows the screen light before login it then goes off, so I tried a "safe mode" by pressing the shift key, after that the Apple logo comes on & it has like that for 8hrs & I'm still waiting. ThanksHi ibiubam,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

help mi imac won't start normally
Hello!
Can you tell us what happens?
I’ve offered the steps below to similar posts in the past and they helped out getting to the solution (or at least find the cause). I suggest them to you too in this case. It will take you about 30 minutes or less to do these, depending on how bad the problem on your Mac is.
The goal here is to boot your Mac to the so-called Recovery partition where you’ll have a chance to repair the disk and the disk permissions using the Disk Utility and Password Utility. This might solve your issue and even if it doesn’t- it’s still a decent maintenance step to perform. These steps won’t erase your data or reinstall your Mac in any way if you follow instructions carefully.
Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you either see an Apple Logo with a loading bar or a spinning gear.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]
Disk Utility will display your computer’s harddrive in the left column. The default name for it is “Macintosh HD” and is usually the second one from the top. Click on it and click on the [verify disk] button. This will check your “Macintosh HD” harddrive partition for errors. If found, click [repair disk] unless you have a Fusion drive in your Mac and it says [fix] instead of [repair disk] please tell us before you continue! For a screenshot of what I mean, check this article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202574
4/ Once done with the verifying or repairing of your “Macintosh HD” click [repair disk permissions]
This will check your partition for permissions errors. A common myth about this feature is that it will fix all permissions issues on your Mac, which is not true, but it will fix most systemwide issues. Also, here is a list of error messages that you can safely ignore if they pop up:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203172
5/ Lastly we shall do a permissions/Access Control List repair on specifically your user’s home folder with a somewhat hidden tool in the Recovery partition. Close Disk Utility and find the menu called “utilities” in the top left corner of your computer’s display. It’s in between the menus “edit” and “window” Don’t be confused with the menu called “os x utilities”
Choose Terminal. A somewhat old-fashioned looking window will pop up, waiting for a text command from you. This is the Terminal.
After the # type: resetpassword and press return. Note that there is no space between ‘reset’ and ‘password’
What you’ll see next is an rectangular window that gives you the option to reset passwords. We are not going to that, however. Instead, click on “Macintosh HD” at the top. In the pull-down menu below that, choose your user's accountname. Skip all the rest and at the very bottom click the [reset]-button.
A spinning gear will appear and may stay on for a second or several minutes. It’s hard to predict exactly how long.
If you have multiple users on your Mac, I advise you to repeat this step for all your users.
We’re ready to reboot your Mac now. Click on the Apple Menu and choose “startup disk” Choose to boot from “Macintosh HD” Please let us know if this solved your issue, or if the steps above did not work, or could not be performed for some reason. -
All of a sudden Photoshop won't start [on a Macbook Air]
Dear all,
I'm on a MacBook Air with OS X 10.10.2, and I use Photoshop about once a month, but now I really need it, and it won't start:
- Immediately after I click on the Photoshop icon I get "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 cannot be opened because of a problem." And when I click on the "Report..." button I get a very technical message (see below).
- I've used Photoshop on this machine for about a year with no problem, but recently I had a problem and needed to restore from my TimeMachine backup.
- I don't know if the problem occurred immediately after the restore or not.
- I've read innumerable threads on various forums, but nothing describes my problem exactly. I suspect a problem with my paths and permissions (since I read a report that restoring from a TimeMachine causes such problems occasionally), but I don't know which path is corrupted/missing/unreadable.
- I've tried creating a new admin account and starting Photoshop from there. It didn't work.
- I don't mind reinstalling, but I don't have an installer image. I started with Photoshop 6, then updated to CS2, CS4 and eventually CS5. I do have all the serial numbers but not all update-images.
I would appreciate any hints on how to further diagnose and some the problem.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Restore preference files to default
In this video, learn the two methods of resetting your preference files back to default: Manual preference file removal and Keyboard Shortcut method (starts at 5:05)
by Julieanne Kost
To restore preferences quickly using a keyboard short cut:
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.
Note: Using the keyboard shortcut, preference files for custom shortcuts, workspaces, and color setings will also be reset to default. -
24" iMac won't start when iPod is connected
My 24" iMac won't start up/restart if my iPod is already connected to it. If I restart with the iPod connected, I just get a gray screen (with no apple logo) forever. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, any solution? I have Windows installed with boot camp, don't know if that's the problem, but I tried reseting the p-ram, but to no avail...
Intel iMac 24", 7600 GT, 500GB, 2GB. Titanium Powerbook 667 MHz G4, loaded. Mac OS X (10.4.7) 30 GB iPod VideoMy suggestion would be disconnect the iPod. That's just me though.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93953
I'm guessing Boot Camp is the culprit. Whatever emulated BIOS it's using doesn't like the iPod as a startup disk. -
I deleted my extensions manager and now my Mac won't start up. Please Help!!
I have an IMac, 24" model, running OS X. For the past several days, little warning windows have been popping up with this annoying beep, telling me that my computer was infected with various viruses. 4, to be exact. Also, while on the internet, random pop-up windows have appeared, so I thought I did have a virus. So, to correct the matter (or attempt to), I deleted my preferences folder from the system folder, as well as the extensions manager.
Now, the computer won't start up past the white logo screen with the turning gear thingy. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and starting in safe mode, and safe mode with the progress screen, and even something there while holding the option key (that one gave me an icon of my HD, but clicking on it took me back to an endless wait on the white screen). I've tried starting from the disk that came with the computer (I held the C key) but not only doesn't the computer start from the disk, it spits the disk out. I don't understand. The computer was fine until I deleted the ext. mgr and preferences, so it can't be that the computer went bad or something.
I don't know what else to do here. I do have an extended service warranty with Best Buy, but I wanted to see if there was some way to fix this before hauling this thing off to the store. Any suggestions? I'm desperate here, because anything and everything I've tried (based on all the try-this and try-thats I found on the internet), nothing has worked.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.Well done! You've succeeded in turning your Mac into a useless brick.
Deleting the System/Library/extensions folder and the associated manager removed most of the functionality from your OS.
And all to get rid of what sounds like the MacDefender trojan or a variant.
ref; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4650 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4651
You may have a slim chance of recovering if it will still boot in Target Disc Mode; in which case you can use another Mac to install the system remotely.
And I doubt your warranty with Best Buy is going to cover user "error."

<P>
The steps are the same whether you have already upgraded or are about to.
<P>
Calendar Server 4.0 on the Windows NT platform can only support up to nine
nodes on one server, while 3.51 supported up to 14. If you have a Calendar
Server 3.51 with more than 9 nodes that you want to upgrade to Calendar Server
4.0, Netscape recommends that you migrate the extra nodes to another Calendar
Server 3.51 on another Windows NT system. To accomplish this:
<OL>
<LI>Install Calendar Server on another Windows NT machine and configure it to
use the same directory server as your current Calendar Server.
<LI>Stop and backup your current Calendar Server.
<LI>Individually zip up the node directories you want to move to the new
server. (drive:\unsers\unison\db\Nx
where "x" is the number of the node you want to use.)
<LI>Stop the new Calendar Server.
<LI>Unzip the files into the new Calendar Server in the same place as they
were on the old server.
<LI>Edit the unison.ini
file on the new server to add the nodes you have just migrated.
<LI>Edit the unison.ini
file on the old server to remove the nodes you have moved to the new server.
<LI>Edit the nodes.ini
file on the old server to remove the nodes you just moved and then add them
with the new hostname. Keep in mind that you will only be able to modify the
node network from the old host.
<LI>Run unidbfix -export
on both servers for all nodes.
<LI>Edit the remotenodes.ini
file on both servers to reflect your node topology.
<LI>Run unidbfix -import
to import the changes into the node databases.
<LI>Run unidbfix -c,
then -f,
then -c
again on both servers for all the nodes.
<LI>If you don't get any errors, run uninode -test all
to test if your nodes connections are set properly. If they are not, <B>do not</B>
start either of the servers; instead, fix the errors and try again.
<LI>Start both servers.
<LI>Log in and check to see if you can see people on remote nodes.
<LI>Notify the users on the moved nodes of their new calendar host.
<LI>If you did this in preparation of an upgrade, you can now run the upgrade to
4.0 since both servers contain fewer than 9 nodes.
</OL>Use Disk Utility whihc is in the Utilities Folder.
Select your Boot Disk on the left.
Select Verify Permissions
If any errors the do Reapir permissions.
You might have to repeat the process.
see this:

It looks like the preferences file has become corrupt. Try this:
1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem).
5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
6. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
7. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
8. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
9. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.
