10.4 Install discs will not boot

I have an Xserve Xeon 2 x Dual Core and am unable to boot from the original 10.4 install discs to do a clean install. When the machine was running I did install the firmware upgrade (wondering if this has something to do with it).
Any ideas?

Some additional background:
The Xserve was running a drive with 10.4.11 Server. The drive went bad and I'm now in the process of reinstalling from the original discs. Before the 10.4.11 drive died, I installed a firmware update to my Xserve (Xeon 2 x Dual Core 2Ghz).
I cannot get the machine to boot from the install discs--from either the built-in DVD-R drive or an attached firewire DVD-RW drive.
Any ideas?

  • CS5 - Install Disc will not GO

I bought CS5 Master Suite. My install discs will not run on my computer. The discs hiccup, like they want to start, but refuse to even start. It isn't my DVD drive; it runs fine with other dvds. My OS is Vista, 64 bit, 6 gig ram 200 gig free hard drive space.I should be good to go.
I have read multiple complaints about this problem online. I have tried every fix suggested, short of formatting my harddrive, which is out of the question.
I have downloaded, installed and run windows installer, then the Adobe installer, and I have been (bit by bit) removing any and all programs off my harddrive that CS5 might find objectional. Please, someone tell me there is a magical fix that will make this all better!

    Hi,
I do have a dual layer dvd drive. This morning it finally recognized the disc and I entered my serial number and started the installation. However, it is currently hung up at 9%. "Adobe Fonts Recommended" with 943 minutes remaining. The log file is pretty long, so I will just cut and paste the section that has had the installation hung up. At least I think this is the installation log file. Correct me if I am wrong and I will find what is needed. Note the time the fonts installation began was 10:34 AM. My current time is 11:50AM. We're not going anywhere, but I am afraid to end the installation, because I am afraid the DVD won't work again.

  • Sonnet Encore Zif G4 Installed but will not boot.

I am back and feel like the frustrated enator. I called tech support at sonnet and got the upgrade installed but B&W will not boot.
I checked Sonnet tech page and I have no PCI cards installed and the hard drive that was attached out. However I can not get the power plug that was attached to it off could this be the problem. If so how does one pull it off?
I also read some place may have been a post at site the some 256 ram may not be compatable with up-grade. I have 4 sticks of pc 133 non ecc in the B&W. Problem?
I replaced them with 4 sticks of 64 ram pc 100 but still would not boot. Old ram that is untested.<

After doing the firmware upgrade on the G3 some memory that worked before the upgrade will either not work or will not be fully seen. I had a couple of 128M sticks in my g3 that only showed up as 64M after the firmware upgrade, and one 256 pc133 that did not work at all.
I seems you are trying to do three things at once: firmware upgrade, cpu upgrade, and memory upgrade. Doing all at once without confirming the success of each install makes troubleshoting your problem difficult.
    Go back to ONE.
    - take out the G4 upgrade
    - put the original G3 cpu
    - remove all but one stick of memory
    - boot into OS9 with the one stick
-if no-boot then remove that stick, try another...
    - confirm that the G4 firmware patch has been properly installed (do it again)
(even if you can not disconnect the power supply line from the PCI card thats fine as long as the card is not in the slot)
-after booting with one stick, reboot and add ONE stick of memory , confirm memory in System Profile. Continue untill you have all your memory confirmed and working in OS9
-once you have all of your installed memory working in OS9 boot into OSX, confirm the memory in System Profiler.
-if no boot in OSX remove all but one stick, try that.
-if one stick works, take it out and set it aside, try another, test each individually.
-install all the working sticks you have
-recheck that all the memory appears in System Profiler
-Now reinstall the G4 upgrade with just one confirmed working memory stick in.
-If that works put in one stick at a time and reboot, checking for the memory in System profiler each time.
If this works you should have a happy mac. If not you will be able to report back with exactly where problem is.
I know this is a lot of rebooting but IF you have a bad memory stick it is the only way to find it, and you have to ensure that all the memory is osx compatible before trying to install a cpu upgrade.

  • Install disc will not mount

I was hoping to use Disc Utility on the install disc that came with my MacBook, but it refuses to mount! My MacBook will read the Applications disc it came with as well as any other DVD I put in. However, it will not mount my install disc or my wife's white MacBook install disc. For whatever reason, it makes some noise and spits it right back out. I tested both discs on my wife's computer and they mount just fine.
Why would my MacBook refuse to mount any install disc but continue to mount all other discs? I tested both single and DL discs.
I should also point out that my drive was just replaced under AppleCare. I am not sure if this was a problem before because I never needed to use the install disc until now.

Since this is a hardware problem you just had fixed, I suggest you take the computer back for more service.

  • My Install Disc Will not Let me Archive and Install

I'm trying to perform an archive and install (my computer is stuck in a log in loop so I can't login under any user), but when I use my Mac OS X install disc to start up my computer it gives me the message "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer." If I can't get this to work there's no way for me to log in to this computer. Why is this happening?

    aislinn wrote:
The disc starts up the computer, has me pick a language, and then it gives me the message.
I work for a small non-profit and we have two iMacs. They're the same exact versions (we bought them together). So they might be the discs that came with the other iMac, but that shouldn't make a difference if they're the same version computer, should it?
I'm not sure. you should try the other disks. as I said that message is indicative of using the wrong disks.

  • Restore Disc Will Not Boot From External DVD Drive

I am using an original MacBook Pro that I decided could use a good restore, and started to clean house. The optical drive is broken, so I am using an external USB drive. I inserted the restore disc that came with the computer (It has OS X 10.4.6 on it), erased my HD, and proceeded to install Tiger. However, setup froze while installing Photobooth, and I was forced to shut down the computer.
I'm trying to get my Macbook Pro to boot from the restore disc that came with it so I can try setup again, but it won't work. If I hold C during the boot, I get a flashing folder with a question mark over it. If I hold option, I get a cursor, but just a blank, gray screen. In both instances, the external DVD drive is active and reading the disc, but I'm not getting any results on the screen. I've also reset PRAM.
If I can just get my computer to boot from the disc, I should be able to get back on track. Thanks.

When I press option during boot, nothing happens. Just a gray screen and cursor, like I described above. I haven't been able to test the external drive yet on another mac to see if it is bootable because I can't find the other computer's boot disc at the moment, but I'll try later with something else.
I have been able to access the drive through Target Disk mode successfully though. Is there something in particular I should do with the files? The folders are:
    Applications
    cores
    dev
    etc
    Library
    OSInstall.mpkg.998YblbM
    System

  • Installed Disc will not open

I installed a disc to my macbook pro 11 and all was working fine the installation completed
i updated to the yosemite recently if that has anything to do with it, i'm no computer expert, but when i go to open the icon it says it quit unexpectedly and I don't know how to resolve this.
I really need use of whats on this disc asap.
I would really appreciate any of your responses in order to solve this.
    Thanks

Because in some ways Yosemite is different that previous OSX versions and thus not all apps that were developed fro previous OSX version will work on Yosemite.

  • Install CD will not boot.

Hey, I'm reinstalling arch as my harddrive decided it didn't want to live any more and decided to kill itself.
I downloaded the latest install CD (my old one is a few revisions behind probably cause more problems if i used it) and tried to install. The CD appears to run normally but i just end up with a blank screen, no login, no messages, nothing. It's not the CD as the md5's match. and its not the hardware as i can boot up knoppix and ubuntu from their respective liveCD's.
    any clues?

    just to be sure:
You boot from cd and are immediately presented with a black screen or are you presented with grub (boot manager) and do you end up with a black screen after selecting the top choise in grub?
If the latter is the case, udev may be causing graphics issues.. I have a simmilar problem on my laptop. You can try appending a vga mode to the bootline. You can do so by hitting [tab] while having the top choise selected. try appending vga=773.

  • Install CD will not boot..... please help

I have a G4 with cd/dvd drive, using os9.2... I just purchased Tiger osx v10.4 and I can't get the disk to boot... no matter what I do.... what can I do? Thanks for any feed back. Mary
    G4   Mac OS 9.2.x

Any resolution on this? I have a weird situation. I upgraded my dual 450 to a powerlogix 2.0 GHZ which proceeded to freeze then subsequently trash my 10.4 based system.
I rebooted using an emergency CD boot disk that I had made while using 10.3. Diskwarrior hung scanning for disks.
I then decided to reinstall the system, but the 10.4 install DVDwould freeze the system at boot time.
I took out the new processor and put everything back the way it was before crash-time, except for the firmware level which I kept at4.2.8f1.
Still no-go on booting the orginal 10.4 disk or the Tiger install dvd.
So, how about 10.3? Same thing. It freezes the system at the apple white/gray screen that you get early on in the boot-up stage.
So, what about 10.2? I still had those CDs hanging around. Indeed, I was able to re-install 10.2.
I also put in an extra hard drive that I had. I copied the contents of the install DVD for Tiger to the drive and set the drive as the boot device. Same behavior - it freezes at boot time.
Funny - all but the emergency boot CD and the 10.2 install CD fail.
    So, I'm stuck at 10.2.
PS: I then re-installed the 2.0 GHz CPU and it's stable.

  • Installed Leopard 10.5.1, Will not boot into Win XP

I installed Leopard recently on my work laptop.
Before it had 10.4.11 and Win XP properly working on it.
Now after Leopard was installed, It will not boot into Win XP,
just gives a Black Screen and never progresses past that,
I hard reboot, and it boots fine back into Leopard.
All software updates up until 10.5.2 have been applied,
will applying 10.5.2 fix this issue?

All my financial records are on the Windows side of the iMac. I've used BootCamp for more than a year, I have MacOS 10.5 (very recently updated from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2), and there has been no problem with starting Windows until today. When I restart and hold down the option key, it always boots up into the MacOS. How do I get Windows?

  • BIOS update, then will not boot from any drive

This old laptop, 3000 C200 8922 was acting very clunky when on wireless.
Downloaded Bios Version 63ET62WW and flashed it into the bios.
Now, even though I can get to the bios screen, and it shows the hard drive, DVD/CD drive, it will NOT boot from either.
It will also "see" a usb installed, but will not boot from it.
I have removed all power and cleared the CMOS several times and I still have nothing. Tried two different hdd's which have been in the machine and same results.
HELP!! I should have never messed with it......

    hi k4pew,
One rule after a BIOS update is to Load optimize deafults after updating.
Try that go inside BIOS Hit F9 to load defaults then F10 to Save and Exit.
    If not
Try turning on the computer and start hitting F1 to load the Recovery Menu and see if that will push then Try Reseting the PC.
If still the same Im afraid that the BIOS needs to be reflashed.
Im not aware of any flash tool or a your Previous BIOS Version Firmware available for download.
You can try calling Lenovo Technical Support for any options available for repair.
Im sorry to hear what happened

  • Will Not Boot from Install Disc  & 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D - Thermal Sensor?

*Will Not Boot from Install Disc*
I used the "option key" approach with the gray start up disk. At first it ejected the start up disk. Then I nudged the disk back in the machine and it showed on the screen as an option. I clicked on the start up disk image and it finally loaded.
But, it won't accept the start up disk when holding down the "C" key at restart.
    *4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D*
I did an Apple Hardware Test and received the following diagnostic:
    Version: 3A121
    Test Suite: Extended Test
    Loop Count: 2
    Result: Failed
    Failure code: 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D
    *Thermal Sensor*
A search for the failure code 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D brought up an Apple Discussion topic entry stating: That error code indicates a problem with a thermal sensor. It could be not working or possibly not connected. You will need to take it to Apple for repair.
Would a thermal sensor have anything to do with it not starting up when holding down the "C" key at restart? What are thermal sensor problem symptoms?
    *User File Folder Opened Up*
The machine also starts up with my user file folder opened up rather than with a blank screen as it normally should
I completed a DiskWarrior rebuild on the disk and verify disk shows it is fine.
Any suggestions on what to do next with these issues?

The answer was in your post: "You will need to take it to Apple for repair."

  • Mac will not boot from hard drive or install disc

    Hello All
In dire need of advise...my intel Mac will not boot, even tried booting to the Snow Leopard install disc and all I'm getting is the white screen, apple logo and the wheel.
Just before this happened there was a buzzing sound like the fan was about to fail but that is only a guess on my part. Is there a keyboard shortcut to boot to a terminal window or similar to force the computer to boot from the install disc.
Thanks in advance for any help offered.
    Warren

    Hi Warren
Try holding the Option key and see if it will boot into Startup Manager, where you should be able to choose from a good Drive or your install Disk.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533
or the D key and run the Apple Hardware Test.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Also note: key commands may require a USB Keyboard if your using a wireless and it has become unpaired.

  • G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD

We have a DP 1ghz Quicksilver PowerMac G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the machine.
We were in the process of installing 10.4 Tiger before placing it for sale.
The Mac was originally OSX Server 10.1 that we later converted to a worksation running 10.3 Panther.
It has 1 GB of memory, 80GB hardrive, 250MB Zip Drive and a Radeon 7500 video card.
Since this machine only has a CD-R drive and not a DVD-R, we installed Tiger using another Mac via Target Disk Mode. The installation process went well, but when I tried to reboot I got a Kernel Panic right after startup screen with the grey Apple logo.
On some reboots we get to the blue startup screen, others it stops at the grey Apple logo, others a black box like the a Kernel Panic - but with no text. Twice it went directly into Open Firmware.
We have done the following during our troubleshooting:
    - Reseat RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, Zip & CD-R connections
    - Remove RAM 1 stick at a time and reboot
    - Replace RAM with RAM from another working Quicksilver
    - Replace Video Card with one from another working Quicksilver
    - Zap PRAM
    - Reset CUDA switch
    - Unplug the MAC and remove everything (RAM, Battery, etc) for 30 minutes and try to reboot
    - Tried booting from the Macintosh Server G4 Software Restore CD
    - Tried booting from Mac OS X Server CD
    - Tried booting from AppleCare Protection Plan CD with TechTool
    - Tried booting from Diskwarrior CD
    - Tried booting from an external FireWire drive with a disk image of Tiger OS Install
    - Tried booting with the hard drive disconnected
The Mac WILL boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD and will pass ALL of the extended tests.

Conventional wisdom says that any Mac that will not boot up from a System/Install CD OS 9 or an Install CD Mac OS X, has a Hardware problem.
The diagnostic CD is a red herring because it uses a very primitive method of reading the CD, and so does not properly represent the machines general ability to read CDs.
I would look at the CD drive cables, etc, and see if another drive gives different results.
