10.4 install trashes Airport on Powerbook g4

After installing 10.4.6 on my Powerbook G4 17 1.5ghz I am warned that extension AppleAirPort2.kext will not work and must be reinstalled. Also my airport is disabled in Networks. I tried the update to 10.4.10 and still the same problem. My wife has the same powerbook with 10.4.10 installed and her airport works OK. So I copied her AppleAirPort2.kext file into my 10.4.10 extension folder but my airport will still not work. I am doing this installation onto a 2.5" firewire drive in order to prepare a new hard drive to install into my computer. (I am used to Apple system update nightmares so I don't mess with a working mac till I get a new system working on a separate hard drive. When I boot my computer off the system 10.3.9 that is currently installed the airport works fine?
Whats up? Any help out there?

In addition your topic title is a misnomer. I have installed 10.4.x on many macs without a problem as you describe. Perhaps when you install Tiger on your boot drive there won't be an issue. If done properly your trepidations should be alleviated.

  • Macbook can't see time capsule through airport utility; powerbook can.

This question probably applies to Airport Extremes as well as Time Capsules, but I happened to see it with a new TC.
My Time Capsule came in yesterday. My plan was to bridge it into my existing network to serve 802.11n over 5ghz. I did the initial setup using a 12" powerbook and it worked fine. I set the Time Capsule in bridge mode and for 802.11n 5ghz, plugged it into my network, and reset. The light on the TC turned green and all looked like it was working. At least, until I tried to connect through my Macbook Pro.
I installed the Airport Utility software that came with the TC, rebooted, then launched Airport Utility -- and it couldn't find any devices. It can, however, see the Airport's wireless network. After a reboot of the TC, it can also connect to the Airport's wireless network. I can get to the internet and the local network, but cannot see the Airport through Airport Utility and cannot see the Time Capsule disk. It's as if Bonjour is being blocked between my laptop and the Airport. This happens whether I'm connected to the TC wirelessly or wired.
I've tried restoring to factory defaults and starting over (I still can't see the TC, even after a hard reset) and I've tried a hard reset of the TC (I had to, actually -- it hung during startup several times). In each case, the powerbook can see it, but the macbook can't. I'm out of things to try. If I can't get this resolved soon, I'm going to have to return the TC, since it's useless if I can't access the disk.
I was planning on upgrading the two computers to Leopard over the weekend, then use the TC for Time Machine for both computers, but if it's not working for Tiger I'm worried that it won't work for Leopard, either.
Is there any variable anyone knows of that blocks a computer from seeing an base station through the Airport Utility? A non-obvious firewall setting, perhaps, or something that could be blocking Bonjour? Does Airport detection even use Bonjour, or am I on the wrong track?
    Thanks

An update: I can see the Airport configuration of the TC through my Macbook if I pick File->Configure Other... on the Airport Utility, and then put in the IP address. Which leads me to believe that it's a Bonjour issue, but I haven't figured out more than that.
Of course, the TC is still useless for Time Machine if I can't get to the disk, so the problem remains.

  • Installing an Airport Card

I have never installed anything in a computer by myself. Should I try installing an Airport Card in my G4 Powerbook by following this site's directions or should I take it to get done? Basically, how easy is it to make a serious mistake doing it by myself? I'd like to try if answer to this question is "not very". Thanks.

  • I have just bought an airport time capsule and im trying to install an airport utility. I tried the 6 version but it wd not load because it said might mac would not support. I then tried the 5.6.1. and it said it would not work with airport capsule.

I have just bought an airport time capsule and i am trying to install an airport utility programme to support this
However, it seems the version 6 which came out last year - i can't use on my Mac - Snow Leopard -
So tried to then install version 5.6.1 and although this installed properly, it says this will not support my capsule
    2. I have BT home hub 2. I presume I cannot bypass this as the internet router? I bought the time capsule for its capability to back up . The router was a byproduct. But am I correct in thinking that it acts as a secondary router or a booster rather than a primary router . I still need the BT homehub?
if anyone can help that would be great
    CS J

You should either return the Time Capsule or upgrade your Mac at least to OS X 10.7.

    Hi
I actually dont think its Lion (sorry i put that as couldn't remember) as not on that computer at the moment, its at home, I am at work. I know CS2 is compatable with whatever OS I am using because I can using CS2 indesign etc and I was able to use CS2 photoshop until I updated the Camino browser (I believe this is when it stopped working). I have CS5 but it wont work at all on my Powerbook G4.
I can send a message later with the OS I am using and maybe you can suggest other help? They told me in the MAC shop to try and get the installation discs. They also said I would be able to get these via Apple's 'media replacement programme' which I cannot find anyway! To be honest, I am not even sure getting the install discs will work but I'll try whatever I need to try and get Photoshop working on it again!
    Thanks

  • I get an error message when trying to install my Airport Time Capsule

I have Bell Fibe and I connected the Airport Time Capsule to my router. My Mac was able to recognize that I had an Airport device connected and during the process of installing it for the first time I kept on getting errors.. I don't know why? I also shut off my Anti-Virus in the event that it was blocking it somehow but that did not work. I also installed the Airport via enthernet cable directly to my MAC to see if I could install in without the wireless feature and same thing. No luck. What am I missing? Any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Is this a new Time Capsule, or a previous model?
Have you verified that you have a good, working Ethernet cable to connect the Time Capsule to the Bell router?
The Ethernet cable must connect from a LAN <--> port on the Bell router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
What operating system are you using on your Mac?  If you are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
Anti-virus is not needed on a Mac. You should plan to keep the anti-virus program turned off if you intend to use the Time Capsule to back up your Mac using Time Machine.

  • I can't boot panther install cd on my PowerBook G4

I have the Mac OS X 10.3.0 Install CDs, and I am trying to install it on my PowerBook G4 5,6. My PowerBook G4 came with 10.6.7. I can't find the original discs. When I try to install Panther on my PowerBook G4 it shows the gray apple for a second the it show a Gray X with a circle around it. Is there any way I can get panther on this PowerBook G4. I know it is an old OS but I love old OS's. I don't have another PowerPC Mac that can run Panther. I just have an iBook G4 from Mid 2005. It can old run 10.4.3 or later. And is there anyway I can update the 10.3.0 Install Disc to 10.6.7?
    Thank You

A quick look at Mactracker.ca (get the app if you can run it - it has lots of info on old Macs) shows 10.3.7 as the lowest OS for that Mac.
You need to find it's original install disks or OS install disks with 10.3.7 or higher. If you had a Mac that can boot into 10.3.0 you could install via target disk mode onto the PowerBooks HD, but that is a kludge since the install will be setup for running based on the other hardware (may have different drivers etc). Upgrade it to the last 10.3 release & it may be bootable, sometimes this can work.
10.5.8 is the maximum OS that Powerbook will run, you cannot run 10.6 on any PowerPC Mac because 10.6 was the first Intel only OS from Apple, sorry.
Also see everymac.com for info on specs.

  • Install of airport extreme card...

I have tried to install an airport extreme card in my iMac G4, but my computer will not power up with the card installed? But it starts up fine without the card in place. Is it the card or computer? The airport extreme card I have has the atenna connection to the side (not in the middle) on the end of the card.

    Hey Michele,
The airport extreme card I have has the atenna connection to the side (not in the middle) on the end of the card.
Well that sounds like an Airport Extreme Card:

  • Got a new Mac Pro 2008 - need to install an Airport card

    Hello all,
To ensure quickest delivery I opted for the standard config new Mac Pro 8 core (early 2008). I did the same with my G5 4 years ago an installed an Airport Extreme card (with some difficulty !). Apparently the card in my G5 is not compatible with the Mac Pro. I cannot find any official reference to installing an Airport Extreme card in a Mac Pro…just a couple of 'hacks'. Apparently Apple doesn't want users to do this anymore.
    Q1/ What card do I need ?
Q2/ I see 3 antenna connections labelled 1, 2 and 3 on the cables. One is for Bluetooth apparently…but which one ?
Would very much appreciate any help.
    thanks in advance
    PA

    kura,
I ordered my Mac Pro with standard conf for the same reasons you did. I also discovered, as you did, that the newest Mac Pro required a different airport card and that installing the card doesn't appear to be user-friendly. I since found the following web site which presented installation procedure:
    http://meanderingpassage.com/2007/07/18/how-to-installing-an-airport-extreme-car d-in-an-intel-mac-pro/
I also was able to order the correct card (part number MB363Z/A) through a local Mac reseller although I see that it is available from other sources including Amazon (will ship from J&R).
I ordered the card yesterday but the dealer said that it was in stock and would take a few days to arrive so I have yet to actually install it.
Having installed airport cards on a number of other Macs I've owned, it is baffling that Apple would make this so darned difficult and awkward. In retrospect I should have ordered it as a build and had Apple install it but it is what it is.
    Hope this helps -

  • HT5022 Airport Utility 5.6.1 didn't work with Lion 10.7.4  So I can't install my AirPort Express (Late 2008) !!!!!!!!!!!

Iа somebody can instruct me how to install "old" airport express 5.6.1 on Lion 10.7.4  ?

The info notes on AirPort Utility 5.6.1 indicate that it will not run on Lion 10.7.x.  It will run on Snow Leopard 10.6.x or Leopard Macs 10.5.x.
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion is what you need, as it can be used on your Mac running Lion to configure both the original and previous generation AirPort Express models.

  • What is the best way to install an Airport to a G5?

Hi. My G5 came without a built in Airport card. I've recently bought an Airport Extreme. What is the best way to install an Airport to a G5? Should I buy the Airport card from ebay or some other retailer & do the installation myself OR should I buy it & get somebody professional to install it?

Hello ajdoyle78. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The April 2005 and earlier Power Mac G5s are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. The later Power Mac G5s (models: M9590LL/A, M9591LL/A, M9592LL/A) are not. Instead, these models require a special combo AirPort/Bluetooth card which must be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).

  • I recently installed an Airport Extreme 802.11N that I bought in May 2013. It replaced an Airport Extreme 802.11N that I bought in July 2007. My USB printer (Lexmark E350d) worked fine with the old Airport, but the printer won't work with the new one.

I recently installed an Airport Extreme 802.11N that I bought in May 2013. It replaced an Airport Extreme 802.11N that I bought in July 2007. My USB printer (Lexmark E350d) worked fine with the old Airport, but I'm having trouble with the new one. When I try to print, I get a USB Waiting message on the printer, and when I force a page to print by pressing Go on the printer, I get a page that says ERROR: syntaxerror OFFENDING COMMAND: true.  . . .cvt . . . fpgm . . . x . . .lglyf . . . <..J head . . .     STACK: / [    -mark-   /sfnts I’ve tried shutting down the printer and disconnecting it and the Airport, but that doesn’t help. I reset the settings on the printer. I upgraded the Airport firmware and removed, reinstalled, and upgraded the Lexmark printer driver. After I upgraded the firmware and printer driver, a few pages printed correctly, but then I got the same syntax error page as before. Any suggestions for getting the printer to work correctly?

Use a powered USB hub between the AE and the printer.. the usb port does sometimes have issues.
Try deleting the printer in the Mac and reinstall it.. the change in AE can represent effectively a change of printer.. it is important to make sure that is all up to date.
Beyond that.. USB printers.. ughhh! Consider for two toners you can go and buy a proper network printer.
