10.4 install woes!

Hi All!
Installed 10.4 and having a bunch of wierdness:
- icons do not show correctly and when they do they looked splattered
- attempts to mount a dmg will not show on desktop
- when using Disk Utility it shows that the dmg is mounted, but still can't do anything with it.
My system:
-G3 BW (r.1)/ XLR8 G4/600
-300 Gig Maxtor HD (SATA)/ Firmtek/1s2 HD Controller
Any advice?
Thanks, sam

I updated this old mac over the last few years..
Added a G4/600 processor, DVD/ CD writer and have been using OSX since it came out with no issues.
Just upgraded the HD from 9gigs to a SATA 300 gig drive (firmtek/1S2 HD controller card) and am awaiting some ram to get this up to 1gig, so I'm kinda stuck with this for a while.
OS is currently at 10.4.6 and everything appears smooth, but I have nothing installed, which will be the real test.
Looks like my firewire HD has some issues as an older dmg that was working previously isn't mounting now. Any thoughts on how to repair this external firewire HD?

  • Snow Leopard Boot Camp Install Woes

    I'm having some trouble installing boot camp. I have a MBP 2.2 and I have just installed OS 10.6 and I am trying to reinstall my boot camp partition. I am using an HP external USB DVD drive (which has been used to installed boot camp successfully in the past and is what I used to install SL). Anyway, 10.6 installs with no problems and then I am able to use boot camp assistant to set up the partition and the computer restarts. Then the disc attempts to spin up (I am trying with both Windows 7 32-bit and Windows XP... both discs have been used successfully in other situations) and then the screen usually stays grey/blank. Sometimes I can hold option and I get the HDD icon and it hangs. If I disconnect the drive and start the computer I get the apple icon and then it flashes a circle with a line through it and goes no further. Does anyone have any ideas? I am pretty sure the drive and the discs are good because I have used them to install windows on other macs with no problems.

    I've also got this problem, after upgrading to Snow Leopard I couldn't access my windows partition anymore, the startup screen would hang after clicking the arrow under Windows HD. We removed it with Boot Camp Assistant and now when we try and re-install Windows (XP), the installations progresses until it hangs on a grey screen (we don't make it to BIOS) and we have to restart.
    Additionally after the installation attempt, we can't get past the grey screen of death on startup (we get the startup noise - no apple logo) and have to use reset my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM to progress.
    Also, after going through this process a Boot Camp disk image is created but it's empty.
    Disk utility isn't detecting any problems. Could we have removed the partition incorrectly and something is jarring the process?

  • Solaris 9 Install woes, 32bit 4m, 8bit console

    Whilst attempting to install the latest release (non beta) of 9 in 32bit mode on my sun4m (SS5) via a dumbterm console (VT420), I've found that once I manage to get all of the settings and work through the somewhat arcaic installation (as compared to say, 2.6), I get the wonderful bar akin to 8's install, and immediately dropped right back to a root prompt; no errors, and virtually nothing that I can find to discern what the issue might be.
    I've checked the CRCs and the burns, all appear fine; I'm installing from a Yamaha 4416SX CDRW, which handles 512 and 2048 modes beautifully; it's installed 8 as well as 2.6 on this machine. There is no flakey hardware at play; my SCSI chain is properly terminated, and I am just flabbergasted at this point.
    Has anyone had issues of this sort, or have any pointers where I might look? A subsequent reboot fails from disk, as the miniroot is no longer setup to mount from the CD, although I could boot single and poke about.
    Many thanks!

  • Ultra 5 Solaris 9 Install Woes

    OK - Like a lot of other lost souls here, I bought my hardware on eBay 'cuz it was cheap & I wanted to try some of this legendary Sun hardware. I've been rather disappointed so far, but not ready to give up yet. Here's my history: Successfully installed & ran Solaris 8 for a couple of months last year, then upgraded to Solaris 9 when it came out. Installations & upgrades were awkward & had to be repeated to get them right, but until about 2 weeks ago I had a Solaris 9 system that seemed pretty stable.
    Then something happened - don't have any idea what. The system suddenly started bouncing incoming email... I could access it remotely using SSH, but not from the console. So - I figgered it just needed a re-boot.
    Tried this several times with no luck. The boot process would halt after a variety of error mesasges; one was words to the effect that some file wasn't a valid ELF file, was not executable, etc. I thought I must have corrupted the kernel somehow. Oh what the heck I thought, I'll just re-install from cd.
    That was 3 days ago. Since then I've been unable to get the system back up after numerous failed install attempts. Each time I run fsck it finds several errors that need correcting. I correct, re-try, but still no luck. I'm beginning to think that I've got toasted hardware (hard drive?), or that there's some corrupted files on the drive that the installer is not overwriting (Yes, I am doing a 'fresh' install each time).
    Now I've learned that the IDE drive in this system is not really supported by Sun (can't format the drive in-place). I tried running some diagnostics from the format utility, but it won't allow some of these as I can't seem to umount all partitions (tried umountall, but still cannot unmount all partitions). I was able to get the analyze->read to run - it reported no problems with the hd.
    I've tried a little self-help reading, too. Bought a copy of Paul Watters' book "Solaris 9 Admin, A Beginner's Guide"... it hasn't been much help & appears to suffer inaccuracies & incompleteness. So, I'm stalled out - thought I'd try posting here & requesting some advice & counsel. Is there a place for cheapskates like me to go to get help with their raggedy-assed Ultra 5's?
    Thanks,
    Jay Moore

    This system is starting to annoy me also :-) (by the
    way, when you newfs'ed slice 2, this is meant to
    represent the whole disk and should never be touched.
    This is not a good thing to doodle with :-( You arn't
    trying to put a mounted partition on this slice are
    you?) I'm sorry - when you said c0t0d0s* I thought you meant all slices. I reckoned the important stuff was outside of the 'overarching' slice s2. Did I blow it?
    Before we get into the rest of it, I got the following on the initial boot attempt following power-up:
    "Not a valid ELF file.
    The file just loaded does not appear to executable"
    <<Groan>>
    Do a prtvtoc on slice 2 and make sure that the
    "First Sector" is 0 and the "Last Sector" is the
    greatest number in the list, well there will be two of
    them hopefully but nothing bigger than slice two. If
    this is ok then;I saved the results of prtvtoc to a floppy... here 'tis in its entirety:
    * /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s2 partition map
    * Dimensions:
    * 512 bytes/sector
    * 63 sectors/track
    * 16 tracks/cylinder
    * 1008 sectors/cylinder
    * 16708 cylinders
    * 16706 accessible cylinders
    * Flags:
    * 1: unmountable
    * 10: read-only
    * Unallocated space:
    *     First Sector Last
    *     Sector Count Sector
    * 16837632 2016 16839647
    * First Sector Last
    * Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory
    0 2 00 1049328 5548032 6597359
    1 3 01 0 1049328 1049327
    2 5 00 0 16839648 16839647
    7 8 00 6597360 10240272 16837631
    This looked reasonable to me, so I continued:
    Probably the best plan I can get from here, assuming
    that cd#2 was installed correctly and the system was
    booting for the first time (I think it does this from
    disk after #2) is;
    1) ok> boot cdrom -s
    2) fsck -y /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 (hope this is the root
    slice!).Received msg: "FREE BLK COUNT(S) WRONG IN SUPERBLK"
    A "salvage" was reported, and we moved along...
    3) mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a
    4) cd /a/etc (watch the a, it is important here) << I did... >>
    5) mv /a/etc/path_to_inst /a/etc/path_to_inst.old
    6) init 0
    7) ok> boot -a (hit return for all questions except
    the rebuild path_to_inst one, answer yes for that). Oh
    and by the way, if you look at the "Multiple QFE Quad
    Cards" in the installation board then Reynald_sw was
    told the same thing from someone too :-) This may
    answer any problems that you may have on the change
    and goes in a bit more depth.
    8) You should now have a Solaris login prompt, but if
    it goes t*its up again let me know where and we will
    see what can be done.No - I'm sorry, but I'm still hosed. I got to the point in the "boot -a" process where it asked for the physical name of the root device[blah, blah]. WHen I hit 'Return' I quickly got about 2-3 screens full of warnings and errors about undefined symbols, and "Cannot load module tcp", etc, etc.
    Once again - I appreciate your patience. I'll understand if you want to throw in the towel... I just I hope I haven't dug a deeper hole for myself. I'm learning a lot if that helps motivate you :)
    Thanks,
    Jay

  • Sky ADSL to BT Infinity 2 install woes

    Reading other threads here I'm getting very worried about how my own problems are (not) progressing. And my total lack of broadband in this interim period.
    We had a mostly perfect sky line, that was slow, and dropped sometimes, but it was workable. I was happy to spend a lot more on a decent line, and with the bookings all set for one day I wasn't worried about changeover, this area is meant to be well covered, and the exchange itself is less than a mile away.
    My original appointment was for 19th august. They booked 2 engineers on the same day.
    One for checking the line, one for Infinity, I have the email confirmations of the bookings, with both order numbers of course.
    The Infinity guy never showed up.
    First they claimed there was no order, and kept me on hold on and off for 20-30 minutes trying to find what had gone on when I'd given them name, address, and the exact order numbers from the emails.
    Then BT said the line was unfinished on their system (it worked fine thanks to the fist guy, I was calling them on it). then they blamed lots of system delays, and tried to claim 'it's not your fault or ours, it's the system / contractors' I corrected the nice guy on the phone, as it was their system, and contractors from a BT owned company, it was their fault, and he agreed.
    Now I've been told three days running that I'll be rung the next day to arrange the engineers visit, and I expect I'll be told the same today. so each day they're giving themselves a free 24 hours, and I fully expect when they finally offer a booking that it will be several days hence.
    Why can't they book it then and there? because they can't even start the booking until everything else is green flagged on their broken system.
    Thanks to them the only internet access I have is tethering my mobile which is slow, has to be reinitialised to regain connection regularly, and *expensive*.
    I work full time from home, and this is HIGHLY disruptive, I can't go online elsewhere because they've ignored my requests to call my mobile and they're only ringing the house number.
    I'm getting massively worried about the repercussions of this from work, and that they'll keep doing this for weeks.
    I'm stuck in internet purgatory, it would take 5 days+ to switch the line back to adsl, and I want the fibre I'm paying for
    Being given cloud access is no use, there are no cloud hubs running in this area. And being placated with 'well you've got the phone line' was not helpful, I have no use for a home phone line, I never wanted one, I use my mobile, it *hugely* angers me that they force you into getting one instead of providing internet access only.

    So now I've been told by email after sending in a query with the contact form here the mods pointed me to that 'the case is being dealt with and  FTTC is not enabled on the line and unfortunately is not planned.'
    The case is being reviewed with an update due on 04/09/13, but the nice mod trying to help me is away until 09/09/13 so if they're my best chance of this being resolved, that will mean I'll have been without internet FOR A MONTH.
    This seems to imply that BT have sold me a phone line for £144 that I did not want or need (having working sky) on the promise of installing on the same day a fibre optic line that they cannot actually provide
    Pretty livid right now, I've told them I work from home, I *needed* this to be a very fast turnover,  waiting for the feedback tomorrow then contacting ofcom

  • Sata win XP install woes

    I have tried to install XP on the only drive inside the box which is a Maxtor SataI 80Gb HD connected to the VIA integrated controller on the MoBo, and it just won´t do it, thinking it was the drive, I tried it with a seagate and a WD Sata Drives with exactly the same result, I know it is a Sata on board thing not because of the mentioned but cause then, I installed XP in an ATA drive with no problems, thought it was XP, so I tried it with XPx64, same results on both mods, Sata and ATA.
    I don´t know if it is a BIOS issue, guess it is cause I even changed MoBos, tried so with the Master2 FAR7 and another Master2 FAR, both yield exactly the same results, good no-problem installs on ATA drives and same point of failure with SATA drives.
    Here is the Rig:
    K8T800 Master2 FAR
    2Gb Ram in two DDRs, 1Gb each, Micron reg ecc pc2700 C.L. 2.5
    1 Maxtor 80Gb SATAI (or 1 80Gb Maxtor ATA, 1 40Gb ATA Seagate, 1 40gb ATA WD, always removing previous HD´s)
    Tried with two different VCards: QuadroFX3000 and MSI NX6400AX
    Bios on the Mobo is 1.0. Tried bios 1.+ but it kept screwing something up.
    PSU is a Thermaltake 500+ single rail. (I can say there´s no problem there cause I tested it on a different setup with same load with no problems)
    2 Opteron 244
    1 CD on master for the ATA0
    On the Bios settings, I enabled only the first device as CD and the second as Hardisk, on the order, I set the SATA drive on top (there´s always one more option even tho you have no other drives installed which reads: addon bootable device, I left this on second.
    What happens:
    I start the system and when it reaches the "press any key to boot the cd" I press it.
    Windows XP install starts loading, then I press f6 and insert the floppy with the SATA drivers, then press S and select "SATA windows XP" from the list (topmost selection), it starts copying the files and then the system reboots and it just hangs there, apparently, it has loaded the files somewhere but it just won´t start anything...I never get to the screen where you choose the drive to format and install.
    I could just avoid all this headache and get an IDE drive and install there, and just use the SATA drives as media/sotrage wise solution, but it just seems ridiculous to have a workstation board that can´t have SATA for its main start-up drive.
    I have also tried installing on two SATA´s as raid0, and Raid1, with the same outcome: Zilch.  :(
    Ant thoughts on the matter?.
    oh!, just a P.S. note, can someone please tell me how to get the updated bios and drivers for the Master FAR and the FAR7?, cause I had to talk to a support guy and he said that the support page was messy and it was tricky to find the correct issued drivers for the systems...whatever that means.

    Oh!...well that was useful and so well explained, following on the excell tradition of clear and great MSI support, thnx.

  • Yosemite Install Woes

    I am hoping someone will be able to help please, after three days of battling an upgrade that went wrong. I've documented this as fully as I can since I see a lot of comments from people trying to help here asking for specific steps that we (those of us with the problems !) have undertaken. Sorry if its a bit long :
    I have a 27" iMac 2010, and I think it was running OS X Lion or Mountain Lion (can't see anymore !). In retrospect I'm not sure if this was the correct upgrade step, but I tried to upgrade directly to Yosemite over the weekend, and after completion the Mac rebooted straight into Recovery mode. The internal  Macintosh HD SATA Drive was locked, even though I did not have File Vault switched on. I was able to unlock it by first selecting it as a reboot drive, unlocking it and then going back to the Recovery screen to select Time Machine Backup. However, my Time machine backup, on a WD My Book Live Duo, failed to work - the OS could not see a valid TM backup. It was at this multiple failure point I began to show some signs of slight worry...........
    So, I tried to download OS X Lion from the internet (Recovery mode option). The download worked for the US Store only (not UK where not available), but still failed to boot in anything but recovery mode.
    I tried Command -R, Option boot etc etc but still the same recovery screen appeared.
    I then went into Disk Utils and saw that my Macintosh HD with all my data was greyed out and showed a locked logical partition. I tried to get around this by re-selecting it as boot drive, unlocking it and then returned to the Disk Utils window. This then showed it as a verified SMART drive. I verified the disk and repaired any broken links etc. Still it would not reboot into anything but Recovery Mode, reverting again to a locked logical partition for the Macintosh HD internal SATA drive after each reboot.
    So I then unlocked it as before, and tried to Option- turn off Encryption in the File Menu. An error message stated that it was unable to turn off encryption.
    I'm thinking I'm stuck....then I went back into the Terminal Window and accessed the /dev that is the Macintosh HD SATA drive. Under /Users/username all my data was there intact !.
    My last step was to go back to Disk Utils, hook up an empty 2TB external WD elements drive and then select it as Restore Drive for the Macintosh HD. It took 20 hours but all the data (not Apps) was copied to it. So at least I got the data.
    I could now completely erase my HDD and start again afresh, but if I could find a way of getting back in so I can see if I could at least solve the problem, since it doesn't seem to me to be a hard drive failure issue, but more of an OSX installation error. Is there any solution that you  are aware of that could get me back to a position where my Macintosh HD could reboot and allow me access to my files and maybe even try to figure if I can restore what I thought was Time Machine via the OS-X. I don't want to just trash the drive before understanding if it can be at least restarted.
    Thanks very much
    Paul

    That's the issue - I'm not able to actually click on anything. I'm able to enter my password for my Apple ID, but cannot get past the terms and conditions page. When I've tried to click accept to move on, the system won't let me because the accept button is grayed out. I've now tried to reboot at least ten times, and each time I restart, I get a message that says something along the lines of "you shut down because of a problem. To restart the programs that caused the problem, click ok." When i try to click cancel instead, I'm unable to do that either, and it takes me into this loop.
    I've to single click, right click, left click, double click - everything - and nothing works.
    On the restarts, I've tried to boot into recovery mode, and that isn't working either.  Is my only option taking it in somewhere to have it fixed? Clearly what I am doing here at home isn't working, and I'm not Mac savvy enough to fix it on my own.

  • Unable to install optus wirless internet software

    I'm using the newest model of the power pc imacs, the one just before the Intel's came out. its been good to me up until the last year. programs have gradually stopped working, dead pixels are popping up here and there. i did a reboot but programs like itunes, preview, imovie etc. still don't work. WOW and safari still work and that's all i use so it doesn't bother me.
    well here's my problem, I'm living on a boat now and only have wireless Internet available (i used to use a modem via ethernet). when i plug in the wireless modem it comes up as a CD, i run the installer and it all goes great till i have to sect a destination to install it to. there's nothing there to choose from.
    we also have another windows laptop with wireless/blue-tooth that can use the Internet. i don't know if i can link the computers up and use the Internet via the windows one.
    buying a new comp. is out of the question since I'm broke and so is installing wow on the windows as i no longer have the disc's. i could simply not play wow but its not a likely course of action.
    so i guess what I'm looking for is a guide (if it can be done) to connecting the 2 computers + Internet or a solution to my installing woes. and like i said before, reinstalling os x was unsuccessful.

  • EMac G4 800 MHz and Tiger (Retail)

    I am struggling to get Tiger installed on an eMac G4 800 MHz for my school district. We had purchased the Family Pack for Tiger so these are genuine retail, non-hardware specific DVD's.
    I have installed Tiger in the past on my Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz and had no issues.
    For the eMac I have installed it using the following methods:
    From the DVD-ROM drive with the media,
    From a USB External DVD-ROM which had been selected as the startup disk,
    From a FireWire 400 HD that had the Tiger CD's restored to
    Each of them fails at some point early in the installation. It gives the following in the log:
    "BomFileError 9: Bad file descriptor"
    This happens when it's trying to install the Base System Part 1.
    I have 128 MB of RAM that it came with along with a stick of 512 MB which was Apple Certified. I have even tried installing after taking out that 512 MB stick and had no luck.
    I have also tried looking through these discussions and my good friend Google.com and have not come up with any solutions. Is this a known issues or am I just having bad luck?
    I appreciate any time given to help on my issue.

    Arrgh! It was the RAM!
    I took out a stick of 512 MB RAM from another eMac and put it in the one I was working on to install Tiger (by itself).
    Now it's installing smoothly.
    FYI to anyone in the future having install woes...
    Try swapping the RAM.
    Whew...my faith in Apple has not been broken

  • Tiger ate my iBook

    Just tried to install Tiger 10.4.x and afer inserting disk #2 (CD installation), I got an error and a message saying to try the installation again. After booting, a dialog asked for disk 2. I insterted it and after a while I got the same result... several times. I tried to boot from the CD and repair the disk. The disk could not be repaired. I started up from the CD and tried to perform the install anyway and no hard drive shows up to choose for the install. NOW what do I do?

    From
    Resurrecting uncooperative CD/DVD drives
    By Christopher Breen@MacWorld:
    After installing an OS upgrade you should immediately run Disk Utility, click "Repair Permissions" to put any errant permissions back in line.
    While some regard this as “advice that rarely does much good, but it probably won’t hurt,” with the latest Tiger update—10.4.3— it's an absolute necessity.
    Post-OS Upgrade Install woes -
    [Dual 2GHz Power Mac G5] : media drive refused to play commercial DVD movies. Disc spins, menu appears, "Play" resulted in badly stuttering picture or no image at all.
    [Brand new 20” iMac G5] : refused to read a perfectly legit software CD; it would spin enthusiastically, but never mount.
    Personal woes with 10.4.3 [Aluminum PB 15"/1Ghz/512mb/ComboDrive] have so far resulted in:
    - cd/dvd drive not reading media (incl. Tiger OS Disk)
    - hangup at gray startup screen
    - kernel panics
    - PB acting like it has no bootable HD, etc., Had to resort to booting in "Target Disk Mode" (Firewire-connected another Powerbook (running 10.3.9, I might add) hold [option]+T keys at startup, 2nd Powerbook was able to "see" the files and I backed up entire HD to external drive.
    I was able to run Diskwarrior, which restored my PB's ability to boot from its own DVD drive - Ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions, performed clean Tiger install from disk, rebooted and everything looked great... until I tried to get on the 'net - every browser I try (safari/opera/camino/firefox/even the dreaded IE) crashes the system (tinted screen, gray multi-lingual "you must restart your computer by holding down the power key for a few seconds")
    Now I don't even HAVE the 10.4.3 update on my system anymore, and it is still haunting me.

  • Installing fonts woes

    I seem to have a complete lack of any ability to install fonts with pacman
    pacman -S <somepackage>
    I've tried:
    ttf-dejavu, terminus,
    aur: monaco-linux, ttf-inconsolata, artwiz-fonts
    after some bashing with xset +fp /... i managed to get artwiz fonts to appear in xfontsel.
    Inconsolata also appears there although when selected I just get a blank area where the font normally is (no settings change this, only selecting a new font).
    Am I doing something very wrong, from my understanding installing font packages via pacman should "just work"
    Thankyou in advance for any assistance

    I'm not a fonts guru, but if you can't get terminus to work, there's something fishy going on. It doesn't show up in the xfontsel, but I don't have a problem with that.

  • MBP woes continue - need to do a re-install. But what then?

    Everything works after my "full restore", but the entire system is obviously remaining very slow. Beachballs galore. Input taking forever. All hardware tests show no problem though.
    So.. I am going to go through a clean install again. <sigh>
    This time I'm going to clean install to my external HD (doing it now) so I will have both. Then when I am happy with the way it is working on the external, I'm going to try to move that back to my internal drive after reformatting.
    Is it easy to move a complete system from an external HD to the internal HD? Can I do it with Finder drag-and-drop to copy everything over?

    Just a followup on this before deciding how to proceed, taking into account Francine's message.
    To summarize again, I was having trouble with my MBP running Leopard. It started running really slowly and then wouldn't reastart.
    To make a long story short, I ended up doing a full Time Machine restore to my internal HD. It runs from there, but still really, really slowly (beachballs galore). So I did a clean install on to a 230 GB external HD and am moving over just the data I need from my internal HD, which is the standard MBP 160 GB HD.
    The system on my external HD is running very quickly!
    What I would like to do now is move my entire system from the external HD into the internal HD. Can I reformat the internal HD and use CCC to do this? Is it a problem that the two disk sizes are different? The OS+data itself is much smaller than the internal HD's 160 GB of course.
    Could I accomplish the same thing as CCC by doing a Time Machine backup and then restoring from that (like I did earlier today with my old system?)
    I understand from Francine, and also calling Apple, that I could do the same thing from the install DVD inside Disk Utility - choosing the external HD as the source and the internal HD as the target. Is CCC's result different from this?
    Thanks!

  • CS6 Install and Reboot woes

    I'm trying to install CS6 Beta to try it out and I initially get the following warning 'We've encountered the following issues' Installer has detected that a machine restart maybe pending. It's recommended that you quit the installer, restart your machine and try installing again'. Now I've tried that several times but the warning persists. I therefore chose to ignore it and CS6 seemed to have installed just fine. Only then I rebooted my PC (Win 7 64-bit) and the PC would start properly. The only solution was to run window's startup repair. This problem is reproducable each time I try to install CS6.
    Anyone come across this?
    Joe

    Hi Simon_2013
    We have performed limited testing of CS6 apps with XP service pack 2. I dont think you will get any installation issues however most of the apps may crash on launch. You may download the trial version of CS6 and test it on the XP SP2 machine before you purchase the software.The trial works for 30 days. However the recommended installation platform for XP is with SP3.
    Please find the direct link to install CS6: http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html .
    Kindly follow the very important instruction before download.

  • Install win 8.1 error looking for disk

    I have a new Mac Mini w/ Mavericks OS.  I have been trying to install Win 8.1 for days.  I had a keyboard on order, finally came today to allow me to Recover the Mac from a failed Win 8.1 install.  I have read hundreds of conversations on this topic. And to air one question constantly asked, 'Why! Why is it that there are dozens of different ways people are having to use to install one program? Why?!?'
    I am able to get to the page in Windows setup where I am to select the drive called BOOTCAMP.
    I select the drive
    I then FORMAT the drive
    Then I am told that drive - or any installation for Windows drive - is NOT found or available.
    I've gotten to this screen a dozen times now.
    I have arrived there by two methods  1) following the 'book' on Win 8.1 installation via BOOTCAMP  and  2) Once here I shut the machine down and reboot with CTRL-key at restart -> select the WINDOWS drive from those available -> then follow the Windows install panels.  Which, every time leads me right back to this page.
    A note about this page.  Every online tutorial, including the one on the Windows site and here on Apple forums, shows a DIFFERENT layout of the page. The tutorials show a page with a link to click for Advanced settings.  My window just shows those Advanced settings.  I don't see how this makes the process work or not, but that's a peculiarity of my setup woes compared to the instructions that exist.
    NOW .. HOW in the name of all that is sensible!! -- do I get from the page where I select the partition I need to install Win 8.1 on..?
    Again ..PLEASE!!! DO NOT retroute me through all the old settings everyone has been hashing about since September 2013.  I need to know What Works NOW - January 2014- to get Windows 8.1, installed and working on my Mac Mini running latest version of Mavericks.
    Thank you ... I HOPE!

    Windows 8.1 is not yet officially supported in Bootcamp. There is no way to know when it will be supported.
    Having said that some systems will install it and it runs fine, though these systems appear to be few and far between.
    The only advice I can give is to try some of the workarounds available on various sites or wait until it is supported by Bootcamp.
