10.4 power Macs Intel Macs

Hi there
I was wondering whether that an OS 10.4 disk has two different versions of the OS for Power Macs and Intel Macs or do they use the same disks. I am thinking of getting 10.4 for the beige. Does anyone think that 10.5 will work on beige with a cpu upgrade?

Disks for 10.4 (and probably later) that shipped with a particular Mac are specific to that model ONLY, and they will be DVDs, not CDs. There is a US$10 exchange program (send in 10.4 DVDs, get back 10.4 CDs) that Apple can cancel at any moment, and requires proof of legitimate Retail purchase through a "normal" retail outlet, not eBay.
"Full Retail" 10.4 disks are supposed to be universal, and contain separate or universal installers for PowerPC G4, G5, and Intel processors. However -- the license agreement (to which you agree during the installation process) restricts their use to a single computer, unless you pay extra for the "family pack" which allows use on up to 5 in the same household.
The last version of Mac OS that a beige G3 can run is 10.2 Jaguar. It is not simply a matter of the CPU upgrade. Your Mac requires a ROM that has support for certain features that Mac OS X 10.3 and later depends on. To make it easy to identify which Macs those routine exist in, Apple has simplified the System Requirements documents with phrases like "built-in USB support". It is not the USB support that is required, it is the ROMs that have USB support along with the required OS support routines that is the full requirement.
If you wish to go out on a limb and try cheater programs, XPostFacto has worked pretty well for many users here for installing 10.3 Tiger on beige G3s. Results with 10.4 have been less predictable.

  • Migration Assistant Intel-Mac - Intel-Mac stuck transfer?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook and a Mac-mini of which the Mac-mini had a hard drive crash. I was successful in clearing the hard drive on the mini and installing the OS and applications. As both computers had almost exactly the same data, I wanted to Migrate the data from the Macbook to the mini. I connected the two computers via firewire and the files started to transfer. However, it seems to be stuck at around halfway at:
    Transferring your Applications folder
It reads that there is 1 hour and 53 minutes left for the last four hours.
Is this stuck or does it really take a long time to do this?
    TIA

"I wanted to Migrate the data from the Macbook to the mini."
Exactly what are you trying to migrate to the Mac Mini from the MacBook?
If you are trying to transfer system files, it won't work, as the Mini is a PPC Mac, and the MacBook is an Intel Mac.
Also, do both Macs have Tiger 10.4.10 installed?
Review this FAQ Can I use the Assistant to copy data to a computer that came with an earlier version of Mac OS X?.

  • Best file system for PPC Mac, Intel Mac, and Win 7 PC

I really was nut sure which section to post this in, so this seemed like the best place.  I have a 3TB external hard drive, that I need to read and write to on a G5 running 10.5.8, A MacBook Pro running 10.8.2, and various windows PC's, what is the best file system to use, or better yet, format, depending on what terminology you use, adn I need to transfer large files(larger than the 4GB limit on FAT).  Im willing to try any suggestions.  I would prefer not to use extra software, if it is neccessary though, I can on the mac's but not as easily on the Win PC's.  I would also prefer an app from apple, I seem to have bad luck with third-party software, but if you know of one that works nicely, again, I'm willing to try any suggestions.

Another alternative is a two-partition external drive. All platforms supported without special software on one drive. You could use mnemonic partition names like HFS and EXF for mounted recognition. Think of this as a functional, single-drive, mirrored RAID set (RAID 1). A file copy to each partition (if needed) provides redundant platform interoperabililty and file backup.

  • Can't update acrobat 8 to 8.1, on Intel Mac

    I can't update acrobat 8 to 8.1, on Intel Mac. I says I need to reactivate plug-ins. Version 8 won't run Distiller.

    Hi Kristan,
I checked and fileVault has been off and I tried uninstalling. After reinstalling when I went to upgrade either it didn't do any good, gave me the message it couldn't upgrade because of some plug-in/ETC. or Acrobat was grayed out when I went to select it as the program location to upgrade.
I did find the blog, pasted below, but doing all this hasn't helped.
I will try again but I need to know, should I allow the autoupdaterer do the update or should I do it manually? Or any other suggestions you may be able to give me.
    Thank you

Distiller 8 problem with Intel Mac?
    Julie Gallagher - 09:54am Dec 3, 2007 Pacific
I just upgraded my desktop Mac in order to install CS3. I'm already running CS3 on a G4PB with no problems. Aside from the Intel/PPC difference, both computers have the same setups and files, both currently running OSX.4.11. (The new computer was set up by migrating setups from the old computer via firewire, then CS3 was installed.)
On the new computer, when I try to distill a file with Distiller 8, the file doesn't process (error message below). The same file processes OK with Distiller 7 on the new computer, also with Distiller 8 on the G4PB. The results are the same whether I'm using prebuilt or custom Distiller settings.

OK - solved it (on my Mac at least)...
Firstly, what I think the problem is is that the 8.1.2 update do not mention the word English - I got onto this clue when I studied the installer log for 8.0 Professional - it showed that distiller was only installed to 8.1 - I was baffled and examined the files at length, then went through this...
    1. Uninstall Adobe Acrobat Professional
    2. Go to the Adobe site and download Bridge Start Meeting 1.0.1 (I believe the uninstaller crashes components in this and if you install without in firstly installed - the installer will ask you for the disk containing it).
    3. Remember this is the install and fix for an APPLE MAC Intel mac...
    4. Install Acrobat Professional 8.0 from your original CS3 DVD
    5. Go to Adobe site and download Acrobat Professional Update 8.10 (file name should read AcroProUpd810_efgi.dmg, and I believe the efgi bit is English, French, German, Italian, and as it clearly mentions English I think I (and many like me) messed up by using the 8.1.2 update which doe NOT mention English and obviously does not update Distiller, in fact, I think and feel - it probably corrupts it...
I hope this helps those suffering like me (it took ages to work this one out), tied now - I need a beer....

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

    Pro Tools 10.3.7
    Interface Apollo 16
Pro Tools is curretnly not compatible with Maverick.   Also, I believe that Pro Tools 10 only allows 4GB ram to be utilized (not sure )
I know Pro Tools 11 allows more, but not sure how much more.  Also not sure if the upgrade to Pro Tools 11 I will have to purchase all new plug ins or if my existing ones will continue to work in it.
The platform changes from 32 bit to 64 with the upgrade to 11
If it is as simple as adding more ram, what mode-part #l would you recomeend.  Can the processor be upgraded also ?
The new tube like Macs are non compatible with UAD Cards.  Those cards a must my sessions

You can use Activity Monitor to check if apps run as 32 or 64 bit - simply look at the "Kind" column (you may need to select it under View -> Columns) and see if the app in question is listed as "Intel" i.e. 32 bit or as "Intel (64 bit)".
While in Activity Monitor you can also check if Pro Tools is close to the 3-4 GB limit of a 32 bit app - if you aren't you will probably not benefit from more RAM.
Your MacPro (it appears to be a Early 2009 model) should have come with a small booklet showing how to install RAM and what kind of RAM that you need. Any RAM that fulfills the requirements should work but your safest choice is probably to buy from a retailer/online store that supports Macs as they will usually know what kind of RAM you need for your mac model.
Upgrading the CPUs should be possible, but I haven't seen Apple document how to do this, so you will probably have to google around a bit to find instructions and CPU part numbers.
Your choice of CPUs will also be limited by the motherboard and CPU socket so you may be limited to faster version of your current CPU chip and some slightly newer versions.
Going from your current CPU to the fastest version included in the 2009 MacPros would be going from 2.26 GHz to 2.93 GHz. This would only give a modest 30% speed boost. Using newer and highly clocked CPUs might boost this somewhat more maybe to 50% ?

  • Intel Mac mini: Power LED Brightness

    Hi,
I've discovered a quirky little 'feature' with my new Intel Mac mini. The brightness of the power LED varies with the time of day - late at night the LED is dimmer that first thing in the morning.
I've verified this by changing the clock time manually and sure enough as soon as I click save the brightness changes.
This didn't happen with my previous PowerPC mini. Anyone else noticed this with the new Intel minis?
    Thanks,
    Nina

    Thanks
I noticed it when the PowerPC and Intel minis were side by side one evening and my initial thought was that maybe it's just a duff LED. This morning it was back to full brightness and now tonight, it's dim again. So yeah, I just guessed that is was related to the time.
    Nice article btw, highly amusing

  • Help needed to run a power Mac ap on Intel Mac.

Hi, I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station that ran happily on my old Quicksilver Power Mac. Now I have upgraded to a Mac pro machine running Tiger, the 'Weatherlink' software won't work. Davis, a main player in scientific technologies have not upgraded their Mac software (unbelievably!)
Will Rosetta help here? .... or do I need to get a P.C?
    Hope someone can advise.
    Thanks
    Lunasa

PPC apps run transparently on Intel Macs, however, in your case it may be a matter of incompatibility. The software is simply not compatible with the current versions of OS X. This has nothing to do with Rosetta. You would have the same problem on your QuickSilver were you to upgrade to Tiger.
If you transferred the software using Migration Assistant, then try reinstalling the software on the Intel Mac (but first be sure you fully uninstall the transferred app.)

  • G4 power brick with Intel mac mini?  is this possible just to test?

A friend gave me an Intel mac mini, 1.60GHz CPU model, but no power supply.
I tried using my G4 mac mini's 85W A1105 power supply on the intel mac mini but nothing happens. I have to unplug the power supply from the wall to get it to power on my G4 mac mini (it apparently doesn't like being plugged into the intel mac mini).
Is it possible to use the G4 2005 power supply with the Intel mac mini if only to just test to see if the intel computer works? I don't want to buy a MA407LL/A 110W intel mac mini power supply only to find that the computer he gave me is broken.
Just wondering if anyone had any tips/ideas how to tell if the Intel mac mini works at all or if I'm just going to have to find someone who has the 110W intel model supply to test it...

The G4 mini power supply is rated at a significantly lower current capacity than the Intel mini requires, thus while some have had marginal success in using an old supply with a newer system, almost any tolerance variation will mean the Intel box won't run with the G4 supply. Not only that, but since the Intel system will load the G4 supply at a level it was not designed to accommodate, you could damage your G4 supply by trying.
If you have an Apple store in your area, I would take the Intel mini to the genius bar there where it can be tested, thus avoiding you having to buy a new supply without knowing if it will work.

  • Power pc programs on mac intel

I can't install power pc programs on my macbook pro, how can do it ?
    Thank you

If you’re talking about PowerPC software for Mac OS X, then nothing is special or different on the Intel Macs. The Rosetta emulation is transparent.
If you’re talking about PowerPC software for “Classic” Mac OS (version 9 and earlier), then you’re out of luck. There is no emulation environment for that software on the Intel Macs as there is on PowerPC Mac OS X.

  • Intel Mac Power issue...and a few other niggles!

    Hello people.
I've got an Intel Mac 2.4ghz. I've had it about 5 months now, and it's been trouble free, all bar a few software issues. Just recently though, i've noticed a few mildly concerning...well, niggles really.
Because i'm very energy conscious, when the Mac is off, completely shut down, i turn the mains switch off. I do this with loads of things in the house (green Dan!). However, recently, i've noticed that when i turn the power on at the mains on the wall, the Mac is turning on at the same time-it's starting up just be me turning the wall socket on, and i always let the computer shut down properly before i turn it off on the wall.
Thats not the only thing it's started doing either though-i know when you turn the Mac on, you can hear the DVD drive register or whatever it is that it does. Just recently, it's started making the noise it usually does, but alot louder...and dare i say, alot harsher sounding too-like it shouldn't be doing it. The drive has performed fine time after time, but i have noticed that this has been occurring alot more frequently of late. There has only been one time the drive has played up-i popped a CD in the drive and pushed it in, but it didn't register-the drive didn't activate at all. I shut the computer down and forced ejected and it was fine-never done it since.
Since these issues have surfaced, i notice that playing music in Front Row has been affected too-the music is fine, but sometimes the album artwork-or even if there isn't any artwork, comes up all scrambled, like a corrupt file (although the same music will play another day and no scrambling will appear at all). Maybe related? I don't know.
All these problems are inconsistent though-i can't pin-point a routine or a certain act that may start any of these problems off-they just do it, then don't, then do....
Any suggestions? Or does it sound like there should be anything i should be concerned about? The computer cost too much to just overlook!
    Any help appreciated!
    Dan

    Hi.
I've unchecked the 'Restart Automatically' option, and for the time being, it hasn't done it. However, the DVD drive is still making a funny noise occasionally...
I've checked & repaired the disk permissions, and all is well. I've attached a link to my Photobucket page with a snapshot of the corrupt Front Row issue. The image is always the same, no matter which song is playing. I have noticed though, that just before the screen flips, the image returns to normal for a split second. Here's the link:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v520/DanThe440Man/Random%20Stuff/DSC00805.jpg
At the moment, thats as much info as i can give-no particular action or routine seems to trigger any of the aforementioned symptoms.

Mac Mini (Intel), iMac, eMac, iBook, G4, & Powerbook (all powerPC)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   also 10.4+

    Hi Sherwood!
If I recall correctly, an update to Windows XP (assuming you're using Windows XP) added WPA support to the existing WEP support. The same applies to Mac OS X.
Regardless, if both OSes are up-to-date they can use either WEP or WPA. But WEP and WPA should not be used at the same time for the same wireless network. Choose one and set your Airport first (create your infrastructure) and then set all computers to connect using that same security (add computers to your infrastructure). I suggest using WPA becuase it is more secure than WEP.
This link indicates when you can use WPA on your Mac and this link indicates when you can use WPA on your Windows system.
    Hope this helps! bill
