10.4 Tiger Download

I have an iBook G4 running OS 10.3.9 and would like to download Tiger 10.4. Is there a downloadable version of this operating system out there? If so, where? Or, can I upgrade my OS from 10.3.9 directly to 10.5? Thanks.

mgreen, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A and M9639Z/A . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray).

  • Xcode 2.5 (Tiger) download issue

I've been trying to download XCode 2.5 to do some development on my Tiger iMac... it downloads but it fails the checksum ("Verification failed" when it tries to mount). Is this a known situation? What are my options?

Can you download it again? (Maybe from another network)
Does your file have the correct size in bytes? (sometimes, for unknown reasons, the download ends but without downloading the full size of the file)

  • Update from Tiger download

Where can I find the download file to update a MBP running Tiger to Leopard?  I know the disc is no longer available at stors and I was told it can be downloaded but all I find starts at 10.5.1 and goes up from there.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

No wipe or erase needed, but a full backup or clone is advised,.
10.6 does essentiallly what we used to call an Archive & Install, only giving yoy a new OS.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

  • Quicktime 7.4.1 Hangs Up Crashes System When I Try to Install on Tiger 4.11

    I'm running Mac OS X.4.11 on a 800 MHz G4 PowerPC with 1GB SDRAM.
When I tried to install it through software update (several times now over a number of weeks) it is terminated by software update and moved to the trash. When I have rebooted and try to run the installer after removing it from the trash, it hangs up the system and I have to do a manual cold boot using the switch in the back (horrors). When I went to the Apple download site I noticed that the Tiger download wants 10.4.39 while my last update is to 10.4.11 with no way visible to get to 10.4.39.
When I go back a step and try to download Quicktime for Panther which only requires 10.3.9 the software does a check that says that it cannot be installed on my machine.
I am currently running Quicktime 7.3.1 Pro and am not sure what the heck the problem is. Any ideas as to what I can do?
Now of course iTunes is telling me to install it. But I don't think doing a software update from iTunes is going to do any good.
Other tidbits. I have a number of non-networked external drives, both USB and Firewire, I have run through procedures with these both on and off as the 1T Firewire drive backs up all the others. This has a backup of the QT software - could this be the problem even though I have tried installs with all external drives turned off.
Also, I have Flip 4 Mac and a number of other players for various formats. Is this an issue?
    Thanks!
I may write comedy, but I assure you, this is no laughing matter!
    Peter

Try using the "combo" update for 10.4.11 instead.

  • Re: To install Tiger, some Macs need internal DVD drive, or CD version of Tiger

I'd like to ammend this at the end and say:
Notes: Macs released on or after April 26, 2005 need to install Tiger from the discs that came with them, or a newer retail release except Intel Macs. Retail release of Tiger is a black disc with a white X logo and does not say Upgrade or Update.
Intel Macs could only install Tiger from the discs that came with them.
Macs released on or after October 26, 2007 can't install Tiger.

    iMac G5 20 inch 160GB   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   iSight, 1GB Ram, AirPort, 160GB FireWire Ext. Drive

I recommend you erase the hard drive and reinstall Tiger from scratch. I assume you have the standard Tiger DVD. Do the following:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the reformatting has completed quit Disk Utility to return to the installer. Now proceed to install Tiger. Be sure to disconnect all peripherals except the original keyboard and mouse. This includes Firewire drives. Once you have completed the installation of Tiger download the 10.4.3 Combo Updater from Apple and install it.
After you have a properly working version of Tiger installed you can move on to reinstall your other software. However, be sure to verify that the versions you have are compatible with Tiger. If not then get upgrades to versions that are. If you install incompatible software you will be back to where you were before.
In the future do not install any new system software or upgrades without first repairing your hard drive and permissions. After installing third-party software you should always repair permissions.

  • Cant use itunes 9 music store on tiger

It requires the new version of safari, which won't download for tiger. Does anyone know any way I could fix this? or any way to downgrade to old itunes without losing my music

Before installing Safari you will need to make sure you have the correct Security Update which for some reason Software Update pick up on. Go here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/security_updates/securityupdate20090 05tigerppc.html
Download and restart, then go here:
    http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
... and check the option for Tiger, download, install and restart, and then iTunes will go to the store. Hurrah!

  • Upgrading to ILife 6 & Tiger

    Hello All,
I know many of you have been having problems with Ilife 6, here is how I approached it.
    1) Backup your current system, Carbon Copy Cloner is good for this.
    2) To test the stability of both ILife 6 and Tiger (I was running panther and Ilife 5 before). I installed a new 40Gb and added Tiger, downloaded all the updates.
    3) Made this new drive my startup, installed Ilife 6, built a project rendered and burned and image( I never burn straight to DVD), then using Disk Copy I created a DVD. All went well, it might even be a tad faster that Panther.
    4) Once I was satisfied with the stability, I ran two other projects. Later with a back up of my oriniganl confi(panther and Ilife6) I upgraded to Tiger, did the software updates. At this point I had an image I could burn, tested with Disk utility to make sure that there were no conflicts between Patchburn and Tiger.
    5) I then installed ILife 6 and all the themes were there. By the way Ilife 6 has the Themes from previous ILife versions.
    6) Tested Ilife 6 and I am in the middle of rendering a project in Ilife 6.
The new Themes are nice, but very similar. I believe all are motion themes.
My advice is to make a backup before you start.

    Also note the following KBA:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93634
Note particularly the second block down under iLife 6. In very small print it says that if you are using 10.4.2 or earlier YOU MUST INSTALL TIGER 10.4.4 BEFORE you INSTALL iLife 6. To me that also includes everyone who has 10.3.9 (or earlier) and wants to upgrade to Tiger at some time in the future.
My hunch is that there are many folks who have/had 10.3.9 and did the upgrade to iLife 6 and now have performance and other problems.
You should uninstall iLife 6 BEFORE you upgrade to Tiger. THEN and ONLY THEN install iLife 6. While I've heard some folks say that it didn't matter, Apple would not have placed that caveat there UNLESS it was necessary.
To me Apple should have but that Caveat in big red letters on every ad they have about iLife 6. Instead, they place in in small print in a KBA. That's the only place I've seen that note.

  • Strange LR3 Brush Behavior Closes Window.

In the develope module where you select "crop, healing, redeye, GND and the adjustment brush" I get this behavior when selecting a new brush or tool that causes that window to close. It happens randomlly so it's been difficult to narrow it down to any one particular senario. For example, I will be working with the adjustment brush on an area of an image and want to choose a new brush to work another area of the image. I will click "New" and move to a slider to make an adjustment. When clicking on the slider, the window will close. I will have to click on the brush icon to reopen the window and start over. Again, this happens randomlly. Not all the time. It's not a huge deal but I would rather not deal with. Anyone have any idea of what might be going on here?
    Much appreciated, Devin

    Hello Beckx
Welcome to the Intel iMac section of the forum.
It sure would help us to help you if we knew what Mac you had and which version of OS X you were running.
Installing the combo update over the existing version can and will solve many OS X related issues.
If you have an Intel iMac and your running Tiger download and install the 10.4.11 combo update:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__Intel
The same applies if your running Leopard, download and install the 10.5.7 combo update:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1057comboupdate .html
Also note: that OS X only requires a single mouse click on the Menu Bar to activate the drop downs, then you should be able to slide the pointer across the menu bar to see all the drop downs.

  • DVDs on iPod

I bought a program called PQ DVD to iPod. I keep getting the same error message "error-2048 couldn't open the file .MP4 because it is not a file that QuickTime understands". This all happens after I have downloaded a DVD as a MP4 file and try to open it in QuickTime. I have downloaded the most recent version of QuickTime and the MP4 file size is less than 2GB. Tks

Greetings I'm using Mac OX X (Tiger) download a program called HandBrake form VersionTracker (Mac Side)... I haven't had any luck getting the H.264 Codec to work on my system (says my iPod can't play the format), but the MPEG-4 Video/AAC Audio with the Framerate set to 23.976 and I even set the picture setting to 320x196 (turn off aspect ratio)... For a two hour DVD you get around 900MB file, drag it to your iTunes Library and sync, works great...
Now you can use QuickTime Pro ($30.00) to convert it to but it takes 2 hours it seems to convert anything even if its a 5 minute clip... You can script it, but it still takes forever....
Let me know if I can help...

  • Bootcamp assistant refuses to assist

    This on my trusty old early 2007 20" iMac (2.16Ghz Core2Duo)-3GBRAM-250GB HD-RadeonX1600(256MB)
Previously, this machine ran the latest version of OSX Lion.
I did a full system restore on this machine to pass it on to my son. So restore from original system discs (Tiger), download and install all updates, upgrade to Leopard from DVD, download and install all updates, upgrade to SnowLeopard, download and install all updates. Finished.
I do not want to upgrade back to Lion yet, because it will not allow me to install WinXP, and Win7 is not supported on this hardware (technically a late 2006, last of the white ones).
I open Bootcamp Assistant, but when I click continue on the first window, I get this:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.
So I run Disk Utilities, 'Verify Disk', everything checks out, of course the disk is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Yet Bootcamp won't let me continue.
    What do I do?

Hold the ff-ing phone, I start up the computer holding the alt (option) key and I see there is a recovery partition???
Is that why Bootcamp says the disk is not a single partition?
My best guess is that when I upgraded this machine to Lion, it automatically created this recovery partition. When I did the system restore I told it to format the internal drive but I guess it did not touch this partition.
This is hidden in Disk Utilities so cannot be removed.
I understand Apple feels it needs to protect unwitting users from themselves, but man, why can't I do what I want with my machine?
So can I somehow get rid of this recovery partition, or do I really need to boot up from an external drive, wipe out the internal disk and start all over?

  • Auto upgrade "powerpc" software, crush system

Recently, a friend and myself both using ibook with Tiger. We did an upgrade of our Tiger, downloaded the "powerpc" software.
After reboot, the system just hang. my hang at the desktop screen and my friend's hang at the white screen with the apple logo.
I had to put in the bootup CD and my system started to work. My friend's system wasn't that lucky, he had to reinstall his OS.
Anyone at there encounter the same problem after installing "powerpc" software?

  • New Daylight Savings time issue - still occuring a year later

Last year, my iPod classic did NOT update for the new US DST change. It of course was fixed my next sync, but I waited till the battery ran down (2 1/2 weeks LATER.) Why should I (or any other iPod classic user) be stuck waiting till its synced to get this fixed? The iPod does have a calendar feature in there. (Is it that hard for them to adjust the DST code?)
The problem occurred again this year. (I don't recall since I synced around the right date for the fall DST ending timeframe.)
Does the 2008 model still have this problem or did they at least fix it in the newer models?

OK, here is my question. I live in both the "dark world of Microsoft" and the light and wonderful world of Apple. I have to face the issue of Day Light savings Time NO GO with Windows, but what about Apple. Is this set so it will automatically re-set? Has a download come through that changes this already and I do not know it or is this latest version of OS X already fixed for this. Just want to k now as a newer user.
