10.5.1 Patch - Now my MacBook won't restart

I downloaded the 10.5.1 patch this morning and now my MacBook is stuck in a restart loop.
The Apple logo is displayed with the rotating timer for several minutes, then the MacBook restarts again. I get the startup chime and back to the Apple logo screen for several minutes again!!
HELP!!!!

I'm having the same thing happen with my MacBook and 10.5.1. Not sure what the fix is.

  • HT5167 I've run the update, agreed to the restart and now my MacBook won't restart ***?

First time this has happened to me after many years, but this software update has borked my machine. Looks like it had auto-downloaded, so I agreed to restart and on the restart sat there on grey screen with Apple logo and the spinning gear.  After several hours decided something had gone wrong, powered down and have tried without success to get her back to life. Safe mode is reporting 'runtime corruptions', 'socket not connected', 'invlid laf record count', 'Rebuilding catalog B-tree' etc etc. Not good. Any thoughts on how to dignose what's going on without having to refer to an Apple store?

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”

    2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.

    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Macbook won't restart after Safari 3.1 upgrade

I followed the prompts to install the Safari 3.1 update yesterday. Now my MacBook won't restart ... the spinning gear spins forever, even when I try to start in safe mode. (I was really patient, but after 7 hours it's probably not just checking directories.) Single-user mode boot also fails. How screwed am I? And I don't even use Safari!

It sounds like there is directory corruption. Might have been present before the Safari 3.1 upgrade. However, the upgrade, which updates the WebKit files, may have triggered the corruption.
Logical next step would be to Archive and Install the Operating System. If you have Disk Warrior, then I'd try that first - it's quite the marvel for fixing directory problems not recognized by Apple's Disk Utility. If you are not familiar with the Archive process, another suggestion would be to bring your machine to an Apple Store>Genius Bar, if there is one in your area, or to a certified Apple Tech.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Macbook won't restart while updating 10.6.0 - 10.6.8

    Hello all,
I'm having trouble updating my Macbook Pro 13 inch from 2009.
Yesterday I turned my Macbook Pro on for the first time in 2 years and I want to bring some life in it.
It still had the version 10.5.8 which I updated with a usb to 10.6.
Now I want to update my OS X version from 10.6.0 to 10.6.8. I've downloaded the files by clicking on ''software update'' through ''about my mac''.
It now asks for a reboot, so it will install the updates. However, the macbook won't restart.
I click on restart and all it does is show very short a blue screen and then I see my background with only my mouse cursor which I can still move around. All of the applications and toolbars are gone and I can wait an hour and it will still be in the same position. So I have to force the shutdown by holding the power button... And when I turn it back on, it didn't install anything.
Can someone please help me out?
    Kind regards!

  • I installed Lion but now my Macbook won't go past the start-up screen. Help!

I installed Mac OS X Lion today and it downloaded and installed fine but when it restarted it went to the white start up screen with the grey apple logo and the wheel kept going around for two hours. I held the power button and my macbook went off so I pushed it again and it went on, again staying at the start up screen for half an hour. I restarted it again and held the option button to boot to recovery. I then repaired the permissions and the disk drive and then reinstalled Mac OS X Lion. This time the installation took around 4 hours to complete and then restarted. It again went to the white start up screen and the grey wheel has now been going around for the last hour! What can I do? I haven't backed up my files and would still like to keep them. Thanks.

    Hey Lyssa
I don't have a back up but I'm not to worried about that as it's my traveling computer and I only use it for the web and some word processing.
I don't have the disks with me right now as I'm away from home. I'm not sure what I had updated, I think there was a lot because I hadn't don't it in a long time.
If I can start it in safe mode what should I do?
    Thanks.

  • Bought iwork ('05) for ibook; now new macbook won't let me register it

    would appreciate help:
bought '05 iworks, made several syllabi via pages (not the newest pages 2 found in newer 06 iworks that came as trial on my macbook), but now
am being told when i try to register/install my iworks '05 that my key is invalid; as a result, since trial time for iworks ;06 is over, i have to buy new key code, OR only open syllabi without capacity to save in pdf form (to send it out for job applications, etc.)!
i have attempted to reinstall older iworks again; have dumped new trial iworks '6 (what could i do? was thinking it was overriding '05 version, and i can't very well spend another 80 buying new version -- student loans only go so far, right??) looked for update for original pages (WHERE IS IT??) on apple site, but no luck. please help.
    m.

Do you still have the old iBook available with iWorks '05 installed/registered?
If so, then I think you could use the Migration Assistant to transfer your old apps. All you need is a firewire cable... search your mac's help section for "migration assistant".
Also, why do you need the updater for Pages 1.0 if you can't even get it to register from the install disk? Anyway, I think this might be the updater you need:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/pages102.html
If by chance you CAN get 1.0 installed and registered, then I think you should be able to update it by simply running the software update application.

  • I tried resetting my pram but now my MacBook won't startup it just stays in the grey apple symbol for 20 mins and then goes to the login page but does not login!

It was working fine befor but now just goes on grey apple screen for 20 mins then the log on page comes up but it won't log in! I don't have the original install disk. I'm not sure what to do and I can't afford to take it to the apple store. What can I do?

  • Replaced hard drive and upgraded RAM, now my Macbook won't start up?

At the suggestion of a "genius," I recently replaced the hard drive on my 2008 macbook with an SSD while also upgrading my RAM to 8 GB.  When I attempt to power up, I get only a flashing gray folder with a question mark.  I've tried several of the fixes from these forums (PRAM reboot, hold down "option" key, D, X, etc.) but nothing works.  I rechecked the installation of the SSD and RAM and they look solid.  Any suggestions?

My old hard drive crashed, so my intent was to restore the OS and everything else via my time machine back-up.  (That's the direction I got from the genius rep.)  Am I missing a key step somewhere?

  • I erased some unnecessary fonts and now my MacBook won't display any words/icons? Apps aren't working as well. Help!

I tried to fix it but I'm not sure how without seeing any apps/ words/ files

Well, that depends on which OS you are running; in any case you will need to reinstall your OS since the fonts are part of the system.
So, if you have an install disk, boot from it, and reinstall your OS. If you have Lion or newer, use recovery (Command + R during startup or restart) and choose to reinstall the OS.
