10.5.1 update causes 'admin' issues ?

I did the latest iTunes and OSX update to 10.5.1 and since then I cannot overwrite programs in the Applications folder. Needs authentication and gives me sign-on without user name filled in. Enter 'correct' user-name and password and it says it's incorrect. (I know that it is in fact correct). I tried changing it and it changes OK and looks like it save but the the new set doesn't work either. Changed it back and it looks to save it also. Tried rebooting. no difference. Any ideas?

I seem to be having similar problems after updating to 10.5.1
My username is now no longer "allowed to administer this computer"
I dont have a specific user set up that allowed me to either. Everything used to just work as me!
I cant do any repairs to disk permissions, as when I attempt to, I have to authenticate as an administrator...
Can someone point me in the right direction?? I know how to deal with this under solaris, by booting from CD/DVD - but ive never done this under macos..
Any help much much appreciated!

  • 10.5.3 update causes iCal issue on ONE account

So far, 10.5.3 update has been relatively painless for me. However, on one of the accounts on one of my Macs, iCal is causing a problem. iCal will not open, and indicates that the account does not have the permission to move the calendar cache in Calendars. Instruction is given to check the permissions on the folder Calendars. I have done so, and those permissions look ok, and they look the same as the permissions for the folder Calendars in all other accounts on all other machines (which are able to use iCal on their local data quite fine). The permissions are: owner: R/W, staff: Read only, everyone: Read only. The exact error message is: '"Calendar Cache" could not be moved because you do not have appropriate access privileges for "Calendars". To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info"'. Help please. My wife (her Calendar) is ready to kill me.

Well, I do not know about your specific problem, but I have learned from these forums about OS updates that I should always:
1.) Note from Software Update that there is a new OS version update, but do NOT download or install from Software Update.
2.) Download the COMBO version of the update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
3.) Using Disk Utility, run Repair Permissions and Verify Disk (and Repair Disk if needed) before the OS upgrade.
4.) Run the OS version upgrade from the downloaded Combo version.
    5.) Restart the computer
6.) Using Disk Utility again, run Repair Permissions and Verify Disk (and Repair Disk if needed) before the OS upgrade.
Since you have a Permissions issue on the iCal file. the above routine might solve your problem.
BTW, I have solved problems using that routine even after running an OS version update from Software Update. Running the Combo update on top of the Software Update (incremental) version seems to fix some things that the incremental might have missed; but the key is running Repair Permissions and Disk Repair (if needed) before and after running the Combo update.
    Hope this helps. (jk)

  • 10.6.5 update causing network issues

Variations of this have already been posted but when I described my particular issues to Apple support the advice was roll back to 10.6.4!
I have 3 Macs, and this only appears to be affecting my MBP 13". Updating to 10.6.5 causes:
    - ethernet to stop working; it shows as connected and shows correct IP but there is no acccess to web, offsite ping, or email. Reboots very occasionally get it to work but when changing any aspect of network config (eg switching on wireless or changing location) it fails again. Booting with ethernet cable plugged in usually results in the spinning beachball.
    - wireless works reasonably, but any change to config causes loss of network as described above. VPN under wireless becomes very temperamental
    - when the network fails, finder also crashes and restarting it only gets it going for less than a minute before it crashes out again.
    - waking from sleep also appears to cause the network problems
I can replicate the problems easily; works fine up to 10.6.4 but as soon as a later upgrade is applied then it fails. To clear the problem I only have to reinstall the OS over the existing installation, I don't have to do a clean install. The problems occur on both my home network and my work network
I'm afraid that I can't get any logs from the failure because that would mean me breaking it and having to reinstall. I'm currently waiting for the next upgrade but wonder if anyone else has seen this - any thoughts/pointers welcome!
    Kerr

I have the exact same problem on two of my imacs, both have the 10.6.5 update and have been having networking problems since November of last year. I have pinged both IP addresses successfully so they are active.I have also tweaked the proxy settings for our network, trying all combinations, to no avail.
I have at least succeeded in getting one of the macs to connect to email and Safari but the connection in Safari times out after about 10 minutes and then hangs and you have to force quit. Thereafter only a reboot will restore Safari.
The second imac is in a worse state, in that it does not connect up at all even though the network is active and IP has been successfully pinged.

  • Flash player Update causing layout issues in Adobe Reader

I did an updated to adobe flash player to version 15.0.0.239 and now the Adobe Reader XI (11.0.09) Layouts don't work,  only file list mode.
Is there any way of fixing this? This new layout issue is going to cause issues since the whole appeal of using Acrobat Portfolios is the Presentation Layout views.
    Please help
    thanks!

I have found sometimes you need to run Adobe's Flash uninstaller, before running the installer.
Typically the first whole number of a version is usually a major upgrade, versus an update, and hence why the built-in update function fails to see the new version on many software.
As for "safe", clone backup in case there is a feature you don't like about the new version, so you can always run it like it was before.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
You don't know how Adobe might alter the overall PDF frameworks on the computer when the upgrade is completed.  If you don't clone, you may find yourself stuck with whatever changes they make.

  • Last night's update causing XML issues with MAC and MS Word

I am running Snow Leopard on a MAC. Last night Firefox installed an update, and the software I use for work no longer works with Firefox. I use a custom built web app that uses XML code to take web created info and compile into a Word document. Until this latest update, the issue had been when creating the Word doc, extra XML code was being written for images causing them to show as blank in the Word document. Now, the document is being created but not with a .doc extension. I had been in contact with Microsoft about the first problem with no resolution. They were able to duplicate the problem. The first problem only happens on a MAC and is not specific to operating system. This new problem is only happening with Firefox, not Safari, and started today after the last update.

    HI,
If you post a crash report, perhaps we can help.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.
You may have Safari third party plugins that were compatible with your previous version of Safari but not Safari 5.0.1. It's the responsibility of third party developers to update their software, not Apple.
Follow the instructions here. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If indeed you had third party add-ons installed and Safari still crashes, then post a crash report.

  • 10.6.4 Update Caused Battery Issues

Ever since I've updated to 10.6.4 my computer shuts off around 30% battery charge.
I receive no warning, no pop up.. nothing to alert me. I am able to turn the computer on and use the remaining charge; however, I keep loosing work.
I read in other sections that a few people are having the same issue. Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Same problem here. Im using a 15" MacBook Pro thats almost 2 years old running 10.6.4. The computer shuts down at about 50%.

  • 10.6.5 update causing problems/issues

Updated with the 'software update' app to 10.6.5 yesterday and immediately started having random instant shutdowns (as if all power was lost). Trying to restart would sometimes not even get thru the startup sound before it shut off again. Sometimes it would manage to boot and then shutdown. It's up and running now but the fans are running at full speed. This problem is also random and apparently unprovoked. Well done again Apple for screwing my machine - now I dare not trust it as a control machine for my work.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried the usual PRAM reset, permission repair, disk check etc.

Have been experiencing intermittent keyboard, trackpad and usb mouse function issues after installing the latest system and itunes updates, which was yesterday or day before.
(Lost even some work because the only way to get things moving was to restart.)
Tried solution (verify and repair disc permissions) that coconutmunk recommends under similar topic from 2007:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1190210
That solution fixed worst part of the problem: getting all 3 parts irresponsive.
It seems as problem is still not entirely solved as computer has once tried to lock all 3 again, however before I had chance to get concerned it locked up all 3 again by itself.
Yet, usb mouse keeps on getting disconnected every now and then randomly, even after 2 runs with disc permission solution.
By the way, I don't think reinstallation of entire system would be reasonable step, neither would it solve anything as you would still reinstall that very same update.
Conclusion from 2007topics, where people had issues with keyboards and/or mouse devices, was that it was Leopard system having those problems, nothing like that was reported in about Tiger system, as it seems.
Now, those problems were fixed back then with an update, but seems this latest update has brought back old issues!
Frankly, I really do not have time with computer issues, on top of Maya being characteristically moody already every now and then, as I have to be done with a pretty big project only within few days!
Please PLEASE, Apple crew, fix this issue asap!
I really need those things working properly quick!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Outlook 2010 Kb2956128 Update Causing Authentication Issue

After installing 2/10/15 [kb2956128] update for outlook 2010 desktop client, I got a popup requesting my password for outlook / exchange account. No matter how many times I put it in the password the popup comes back with a new request. I've
logged in to my exchange account via OWA and with my phone without an issue. When I remove the [kb2956128] update the problem goes away. Any suggestions or thought would be helpful.

    Hi,
How about manually canceling the credential window, can Outlook still send/receive emails properly?
For this kind of credential issues, I would first try creating another Outlook profile and test if the issue persists.

  • ICS Update Caused Sound Issues

I just received the ICS update last night (at 3 a.m. - thanks for the heads up on that VZW...), and now when I make & receive calls the user on the other end can only hear me if I use my speaker phone.  Is anyone else having this issue?  Ideas on how to resolve it?
    Thanks!

Wow, you guys are not going to believe this! I found someone who had the answer, at least it worked on my T-Bolt. This gal (I assume because user name is Joy11) called Verizon customer support and they told her to go to (ready for it?) Settings-Call, scroll down to Other Call Settings and unclick the Hearing Aids check box. I just did that, sure enough it was checked, unchecked it, and made a call. Phone worked. Person could hear me just fine.
I have absolutly NO idea how that box got checked. It had to have come that way with the ICS update. When I woke up Friday morning and saw that the phone was updated, I did not goof with it but went on with my morning routine. It wasnt until I tried to call a client that I found he couldnt hear me. I cannot believe how much aggrivation and time I have put into this ******* problem and how close I came to doing a Factory Reset or <Comment deleted per the ToS.> phone.
I promised on another forum that I wouldnt rant about Verizon, HTC and sneak attack updates until I got my phone fixed. If you will excuse me, it's time to go and fullfill my promise. I have plenty to say.
Heres a link to my thread about this on Android Central   http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-htc-thunderbolt/251157-phone-mic-dead-after-ics-update.html

  • Galaxy S4 KitKat Update Causing Major Issues With Data Speed and Text Messaging

    Dear All,
My company has over 40 phone users and since the KitKat update has pushed out we are experiencing two major isssues:
Many of our phones are only getting 3G in places that historically before they had blazing fast 4G.  Most message boards say to power off, remove the SIM card and replace.  This gives only temporary relief.  We get 4G for 10 minutes, and then it reverts to 3G, and it is slow 3G at that.  I have seen where some have gone and gotten a replacement SIM, but they indicate this is not a long term solution.  I have also seen that a hard reset/factory reset is being proposed.  However, this seems ridiculous to do to over 40 devises where the obvious cause is the update.  Has anyone found the answer to this one?
Many users, including myself are now having outbound text messages fail.  We have to resend them over and over to get them to go through.  This problem is pretty widespread through the device pool.  I am unsure what could be causing this.  The messages fail regardless of if the phone is connected to wireless or not.

I have had the same problem with my phone. Called tech support and after they contacted Samsung the solution is a factory reset to fix the problem and they are supposedly working on a fix for it. After doing the reset Friday, I have to restart my phone multiple times during the day to get messages to send. I also notice only 3G where we always had 4G. Called tech support again and was given the option to send phone in to have it repaired or get a refurb under warranty. Not sure what I am going to do yet but I can see it is definitely not just my phone. Of course the techs say they have not heard of this before.

  • Lollipop update caused many issues on my phone.

I use this phone for work and has specific work applications and data that cannot be backed up. My batter drains quickly, applications are constantly crashing and the performance is very poor. Until this update my phone was just fine. Aside from the obvious question as to WHY Verizon pushed out a very buggy update and disrupted their customers day to day activities, I need to revert it back to kitkat. how do i do that?

There is no way to revert back to KitKat. If you are running FB on your phone try deleting all apps pertaining to FB. Last I heard that the FB app was not updated prior to the release of lollipop.

  • OS 10.4.10 Update Causing Audio Popping (AND HUM) Issues:

OS 10.4.10 Update Causing Audio Popping (AND HUM) Issues:
The problem on my Intel Mac mini with external Klipsch speakers (two mid-range/high and a subwoofer) is REAL obvious as the system emits a hum like a Spinal Tap amplifier turned up to #11 when 10.4.10 powers down the audio circuitry
Then, if I play a song in iTunes, it first pops and the hum disappears right before playing.
Quite annoying. I restored the mini from a recent backup to 10.4.9. Problem gone.
I'm glad I test updates on the mini before applying them to my Intel iMac 24. I guess I'll just hide & watch what happens before doing any more updates.
Here's what I sent to Apple tech support:
    Guys/Gals (OS X Engineers):
Concerning the Snap, Crackle Pop Audio problem in the 10.4.10 update:
Please. Just do the right thing and fix the audio.
There is no need to power cycle the audio subsystem to save .0005 amps on the laptop line.
And then to make your Mac mini/iMac/other desktop users have to put up with it when using AC power is ridiculous.
Put the audio subsystem back like it was in 10.4.9 and let the laptop battery freaks looking for mini-amp savings get a "work-a-round".
    Crikey!

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=752&start=0
First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you.

  • ITunes 11.4 update cause issue with AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

Along with many others iMac users, the iTunes 11.4 update cause a window that informs that the system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used.

Am on Snow Leopard and downloaded and installed the update to ITUNES yesterday - Itunes itself installed okay - but I did get the same system extension cannot be used.
I don't have any ethernet devices - so I checked the System/Library folder and the date on the file Is July 13, 2009.
My IPOD (probably now classic because of age) synced okay through USB port, and everything is working fine.    As the update was to allow more devices to sync with ITUNES it may be the error message is not correct one.
Seriously - Apple needs to get out of Silicon valley - the message if correct is for techies - not for users who just want the software to update without problems.    Lately Apple is preaching to their own choir.
I did send feedback through Itunes to Apple - -- If you are experiencing crashes after this update make sure you send the crash report to apple explaining that it is happening after this install  -- also call or schedule a call with apple support --

  • 10.8.2 Mountain Lion Update Causes Major Problems

I'm running an early 2009 iMac and I made the jump to Mountain Lion about a month ago. Initial upate ran OK, I had some problems but overall it ran pretty decently. I held off on updating to 10.8.2 because I wanted to see if it caused any issues, but decided to go ahead about a week and a half ago. Since then, my computer has had daily problems. To name a few, my computer completely crashes when going into sleep mode and will not return, the sound frequently disappears and goes unrecognized. iTunes has been an utter disaster - I have an iPod classic, which as soon as I plug in causes iTunes to crash. I've had similar issues with my iPhone 4. Airplay drops regularly when I never had that issue prior. Homesharing in particular causes iTunes to crash, which was working infrequently as of just yesterday.
I've had quite a few issues, which over the past few weeks has rendered my iPod classic and old iPhone completely useless as I cannot sync them to put music on them (I restored iPod to see if that would fix it, but it didn't. So now I have an empty iPod that won't sync). And the workaround of using homeshare was viable as an alternative, but now does not work at all. Connecting to my Apple TV takes 5-10 times longer than it previously did, and the connection occasionally drops. I used all these features with a regularity which makes this extremely frustrating.
Not sure if Apple plans to fix this with iTunes 11 update, but I'm hoping something will come about soon. I called support to inquire about downgrading back to Snow Leopard, but the guy on the phone convinced me to reinstall the OS, which I did. It has not solved any of my issues (although I was finally able to update my iPhone 4 to the latest firmware, it will still not sync or do Homeshare). Any ideas how I could solve these problems? These all started happening the day I updated to 10.8.2 and, as I said, I hadn't experienced anything like them previously.

I have done that, several times.
So this is where I'm at now - last night, immediately after finishing a movie that was on my WD hard drive, which holds all of my media, music, movies - I restarted my computer and then it would not read the drive. It said it was unreadable.
I brought the Mac and the drive into an apple store today - they said basically it was my hard drive causing the issues. I used my iPod classic as my media back up as the 160 gb could hold all my stuff. Well, as I mentioned previously, that can't sync and I restored it, with no success. So in essence I lost my media drive and the back up. Tough to swallow, I'm angry, I think it's still mountain lion causing the drive to fail.
So I resolved to go home and restore my computer to one of my time machine back ups and do a Snow Leopard reinstall. Well, the moment I returned from the apple store, the time machine drive is now listed as unreadable. I called support, spent hours with them - I now have two drives which fried within 10 hours of each other in the same error. The senior support manager agreed it sounds like mountain lion is indeed corrupting my drives somehow. My iMac currently won't start into the recovery disk. So I went out spent $200 to get a new hard drive, which I am now backing up my data onto with a new Time machine.
In the last week, I've lost my iPod classic, iPhone 4, two external hard drives and now possibly even the Mac itself. I'm going to install snow leopard and see if it alleviates any of my issues, or hopefully can read my drives. I truly believe Mountain Lion is the problem.

  • Safari won't launch after security update. ATSServer issue?

I installed Security Update 2008-007, restarted my machine and went to launch Safari. The icon bounced but the menu bar at the top didn't change to Safari and after a few minutes I got a window appear telling me Safari had quit unexpectedly.
I went through some forums and tried a bunch of fixes: I re-installed, trashed the prefs, history etc, removed all the plug-ins but none of this worked.
In the end I found mention of the ATSServer, which I killed in the terminal. Immediately Safari launched. What's the issue here? Has the latest update caused a problem with ATSServer?
    My Mac is:
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)
    Model Name: Mac mini
    Model Identifier: PowerMac10,1
    Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Processor Speed: 1.42 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.9f1

I presume when you were doing the Repair function booted from the CD that eventually you said "Repair" and it scanned the drive and said in green, "No problems found" or similar stuff.
Another way to effect repairs is to hold down the Shift key at Startup, which does a Disk Repair as it starts up, so it takes a while longer that usual, then loads the smallest-possible set of extensions and boots into "Safe Mode".
Directory problems like "Keys out of order" or reports that there is a problem, but Disk Utility cannot repair it are a serious concern, and may require industrial-strength disk recovery tools.
