10.5.2=AEBS+USB+TM??

Has anyone with the AEBS installed 10.5.2 yet and tested whether AEBS USB disks are available for Time Machine backups?
Message was edited by: Jeff Bailey

SMB TM backups are still not reliable and will corrupt themselves. AFP shares are a little better.
At this point I think we're going to need a point-release update around whenever Time Capsule ships to provide this functionality to non-TC SMB shares.

  • Cannot get Time Machine to "see" my AEBS USB disk?

I am trying to set up a Time Machine backup through my AEBS USB Disk.
The USB disk is formatted GUID with a single partition (1TB Fantom) and appears in the shared menu and mounts in the finder on all three of my computers on the AEBS.
I just cannot get it to show up in Time Machine as an available drive to back up to.
I partitioned using GUID as many posts suggest.
Drive appears in shared menu and mounts in finder
In Time Machine drive does not appear as a destination from all three of my computers on my network
    In Airport Utility
    Firmware version 7.4.1
File Sharing Tab: Enable File Sharing is checked
I have tried "with accounts", "with a disk password" and "with airport extreme password".
Remember this password in my keychain is checked
Airport Disks Guest Access: Read and Write
Share Disks over WAN (I tried checked and unchecked)
I am running 10.5.6 on all three Macs. A G5 tower and two MacBooks.
I have read a lot of troubleshooting posts on this issue, but I believe I have tried everything I should. I imagine it is something simple at this point.
Any thoughts and guidance greatly appreciated.
    Henry

Same problem here, but I have a work around, I'm not sure what is really required here and what is fluff, but this is how I got to it.
Directly connect the drive to your computer, and do your first Time Machine backup.
Disconnect from the computer and connect to the AEBS. I have mine shared as With Airport Extreme password and guest read/write enabled
    Go to Finder.
    There you will see
    your network name icon
    and an icon called All...
For me the network Icon will not connect to the drive, but... the All... icon will show the drive just fine. Navigate to the drive in Finder through the All... path.
Now start up Time Machine preferences, and you can select the AEBS drive. Note Without navigating to the drive through the finder the drive does not seem to mount to the system.
    You should be working now.
As a side note, I have a Lacie drive that when plugged in works fine. The network named Icon will show the drive just fine. The other drive (A Seagate) is in an Ultra box and will not mount through the network icon. This is just plain weird.
Now all I need is to find a way to auto mount the drive 8), and fix the can't login to the network icon... Challenges make the world go 'round.

  • Time Capsule, AEBS+USB drive, Linux server: Which system for Time Machine?

I'm planning to get a new Macbook Pro, and upgrading my iMac in the near future. In making the big leap to Leopard, I am going to upgrade my router to at least the AEBS. But I'm not sure what the best way is to take advantage of the Time Machine function.
Here's my take on the situation:
    Time Capsule
    Pros: all in one solution
Cons: I'm stuck if one day I need a bigger drive, or need to replace it.
    AEBS+USB drive
Pros: Easy way to upgrade/replace drive if needed
    Cons: Extra device needed
Using a drive on my Linux fileserver
Pros: Easy way to upgrade/replace drive(s) if needed, can set up RAID1 for extra redundancy
Cons: Not officially supported, but apparently can use the "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1" tweak to get this going.
    Which would you do?

Assuming that the USB drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) on your Mac
    Open Time Machine
Insure that the USB drive is configured as a destination for Time Machine backups
If it is not, click Add or Remove Disks
Click the USB drive to highlight it
    Click Use Disk
Time Machine will now backup to the USB disk, and alternate disks if you have other disks selected as Time Machine backup destinations.

  • External HDD into AEBS USB not right?

I tried plugging in an external HDD to the USB on the AEBS recently and it didn't work quite as I expected. I was expecting the disk to 'mount' on my desktop (maybe with a nice blue disk icon or something).
Instead I have to go in through Finder>Shared Computers>AEBS>HDD and then wait for it to connect.
    Is this right?
It will make it difficult for me to use in the real world for saving & sharing files from and between applications smoothly. Particularly as it seems once the HDD has gone into idle, the device isn't recognised.
Let me know if I've done something wrong.
    Thanks,
    Dan.

It's a new Lacie Neil Poulton 1TB USB2.0 external desktop drive with external power supply. All cables are new.
The drive works fine. I've plugged it in directly to the iMac to format, partition and upload some content and files.
It also works when conected via my AEBS as an Airport disk. Ie I can see it, and can access each of the partitions and load any of the files. I can also watch a HD movie that is stored on the drive.
My problem is that I can't create an alias on the desktop to mount this Airport disk. It's going to cause me problems if every time I need to access the files or load up content I need to go Finder>Shared>Airport Extreme>My Airport Disk etc as I need other applications to access it and so I need to be able to see it as a normal disk.
Please help, as when I tried to create a Finder>File>Make alias this option was greyed out.
    Many thanks,
    Dan.

  • User experience difference between using Timecapsule vs using AEBS USB drive?

We have a couple of macbook pro's. Is there any  difference between how Time Machine behaves when your network has either Timecapsule, when compared to using an AEBS with an attached USB drive.
I already have an AEBS and am wondering if I can get away with just buying a USB drive instead of having to also buy a Time capsule?
What I am most worried about is that I have seen possibly incorrect information that when using the AEBS you have to manually connect (aka mount ) the USB drive every time you want to do a backup?

"If there is a large # of machineID, this computation can take O(N!) time"
if that is even a remotely expected use-case, sorting and searching within a sorted list are both simple problems, and will reduce that to O(n log n)

  • LaCie 1TB "Big Drive" vs AEBS USB Port

I just picked up a new LaCie 1 TB "Big Disk" to use as backup storage for my media library. Speed is not a gigantic issue for me as I plan to do the backups unattended at night. The LaCie has a "triple interface" and I have it plugged into my AEBS (firmware 7.1.1) USB 2.0 port. None of my computers on my network, wired or wireless, can "see" the LaCie. The Airport Disk Utility doesn't "see" the disk either. The Airport Extreme utility doesn't "see" the disk but I have disk sharing turned on and have enabled everything that "should" allow the disk to be visible. I've checked the disk out by plugging it into my MacPro using both FW800 and USB2 interfaces. The disk is preformatted with HFS+ and it is immediately recognized. Moreover, disk utility reports it in perfect condition.
I'm stumped. Anything obvious I might be missing. The disk seems fine and I've had no difficulty with my AEBS after initially setting it up. I'm open to other suggestions.

I am afraid it's not due to the USB cable.
I bought a Lacie 2TB BIGGER DISK and had the same problem.
Then I formatted again the disk with 4 partitions in a way to have 4 disks each under 500GB and now it works great!
Obviously I have 4 icons to mount and 4 icons on the desktop, but all of them follow the same settings (i.e. I cannot block the access to just one of them by password).
    Does this help?

  • Can't print from Win98se laptop to AEBS USB printer

dear friends, i have searched hard for an answer, but couldn't a solution to my particular problem. please forgive me if this is a repeat.
I have: imac G5 with airport card, connecting wirelessly to internet via an airport extreme base station; works great. epson stylus C86 printer is connected to the base station via usb; imac prints to it just fine.
she has: ibm thinkpad running windows 98SE, with a hawking wireless-G pcmcia card, connecting wirelessly through the above base station; works great. BUT, can't print to the epson.
epson driver is loaded on both imac and thinkpad. what do i need to do in windows 98SE to get the thinkpad to print through the wireless connection? any wisdom would be appreciated.

    Ifelix,
    IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!! omigod!!!!!!!!
thank you thank you for your reply. i knew there had to be a way, but nothing that an amateur like me could figure out. i actually looked at other ifelix hints, but couldn't find anything on topic. i am very grateful. i hope others who are trying to do the same thing as i am get some relief. best wishes!

  • AEBS USB hard drive issue.

I have all apple products at home and all of them see the hard drive attached to my AEBS.  How do I gain access to the same hard drive from work running a windows computer?  I have the MobileMe account, but now I don't know where to go from here.

Unfortunately, even though you have a MobileMe account, what you will want to be doing is use the Back-to-My-Mac (BTMM) feature that allows you to access the shared drive off of your AEBS ... and BTMM is only available from Macs running either Leopard or Snow Leopard.
The other option is to bypass MobileMe/BTMM all together and connect directly to the shared drive by doing what BTMM does "manually"
Is your AEBS the only router? That is, is it connected directly to the Internet modem or is it connected to another router between the modem and the AEBS itself?

  • AEBS Airport Extreme Printer connected by USB not recognized

My in-laws literally just bought a brand new AEBS yesterday. Plugged it in, the the Canon MX7600 multifunction printer into the AEBS usb port. My in-laws old Windows PC is connected to the internet via an ethernet connection to the AEBS.
    1. PC can see printer and prints fine, no problem
    2. AEBS cannot see printer using Aiport Utility v5.4.2 and the AEBS firmware version 7.5 when using in-laws brand new MacBook Pro which is connected wirelessly to AEBS.
    Can anyone out there help?

Have you tried the steps in "Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule".
And you are aware that you will only be able to print... right? The USB port on the AEBS does not support FAXing nor scanning.

  • Problems with AEBS recognising MAC OS Extended USB hard drive

I've just bought the AEBS(n) and connected a hard drive via the usb port. Everything works fine - however when I get info it shows that the format is Appleshare! The hard drive is actually formatted as a MAC OS Extended (journaled) as this is confirmed if I connect the drive directly to my iMac.
Although this may not seem to be a problem as I can read and write to the disk, if I use iMovie it does not recognise the disk and therefore not show my iMovie events, even though there are on the drive and states that i must have a MAC OS extended drive.
I don't know how to ensure that AEBS shows the correct format of the drive so I won't have this problem?
The other thing is that when I use the Aiport Disk Utility it does not show the name of my hard drive in the window, instead the name of the AEBS shows!!??

I think there are a number of problems with the AEBS USB disk support.
    - I have a 1 GB flash drive (solid state) that works fine on the AEBS.
    - however I also have a 75 GB 2.5 inch Hitachi external USB drive that works fine on all my macs but can not connect to the AEBS. After talking to Apple there seems to be a list of 'supported drives' for AEBS USB drives but I've never seen it and nobody at Apple has it (or at least could send it to me).
    - my AEBS has crashed several times when I hook up the Hitachi drive, forcing me to attach the drive to a mac and run disk utility for a disk repair (I guess the AEBS has no disk repair function).
    - and it is slooowwww ....
    - if you use a USB hub there seems to be a lot more issues -- especially if the hub is USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0.
maybe there will be a firmware update. I know I have filed Radar problems on all these issues....

  • Need assistance - wired PC doesn't "see" AEBS; PC notebook and macbooks do

    Hi everyone.
I’m hoping someone will be able to help me with the last step in putting together our home network. I’m certainly not a networking expert by any means, but I’ve been able to get the wireless aspects of the network (Internet, wireless printing, wireless external hard drive access) up and running rather easily. I’m not having quite as much luck with the wired aspect of the network, though.
    My set-up is as follows:
    Verizon FIOS modem/router
    AEBS
USB Hub connected to AEBS, with printer and external hard drive attached
1 wired XP PC desktop (connected to a LAN port on the AEBS)
    1 wireless XP PC notebook
    2 MacBooks
Internet access, wireless printing and wireless external hard drive access are working on all three notebooks through the AEBS -- Awesome! The wired desktop PC is able to access the Internet as well. However, it is not able to access the printer or external hard drive. In fact, when I run the Airport Utility on the wired desktop PC, it does not recognize the AEBS at all.
I would imagine there are one or more network connection settings I need to change on the desktop PC, but I can’t figure out what they are. The fact that the desktop PC is able to access the Internet, but doesn’t otherwise “see” the AEBS has me very confused.
Any assistance that anyone is able to provide would be much appreciated!

Got it! I uninstalled the VPN software, and now the desktop PC is able to see the AEBS and access the external hard drive and printer. Thanks for the great suggestion!
My only problem now is that I won't be able to access my employer's network via VPN. It's not a "need to have", but rather a "nice to have" for those few days when I work from home. Do you know if it's typically possible to configure VPN software so that either (a) ports 192, 5009 and 5353 are open, or (b) the VPN software doesn't launch automatically at startup (thereby preventing the PC from seeing the AEBS), but still can be launched when I manually tell it to. The first approach sounds best, but you've indicated that this may be very difficult. I think the second approach would solve my problem as well, since I could launch and use the VPN software when necessary (even though this might mean that the PC loses sight of the AEBS after launch) and then restart the PC when I'm done. Not sure if you're as much of an expert with VPN software as you are with AEBS issues, but I figured I'd ask anyway. If you don't know, I suppose my next stop is my employer's network admin guys.
Thanks again for solving my problem!

  • USB printer recognized by A.Express but not by new A. Extreme (gigabit)

My Canon IP4300 was automatically recognized and worked without any problems with an old Airport Express. However, with my new AEBS (gigabit ports), the printer is no longer recognized, I don't see it in the printers tab (says none).
Surprisingly, when a Windows PC connects to the new AEBS with the printer connected to the AEBS USB port (but not recognized in the Airport Utility), the windows PC finds the printer and can connect to it. So physically, the connection can be made, thus it has to be a problem with the Airport utility?
Quite strange that AEBS printer 'plug and play' works better with Windows PC than with Apple computers. Other people experiencing the same problem?

Nevermind. The Epson R220 works fine on the AEBS. Wrong USB cable was plugged into the AEBS.

  • Volume not showing up in AEBS Disk Pane

    Greetings,
I am having an issue with my AEBS/USB Disk showing up, well specifically the Volume.
On the Macs when plugged in the Disk shows up just fine, checks out as OK with Disk Utility and looks pretty much identical to another disk that works fine in the AEBS.
When I plug it into the AEBS, the disk appears in the list of disks available for sharing, but no Volumes, when I plug the working one in - both the disk description appears along with the volume name.
    - the "*" represents the little triangle)
    (the Not working one)
    * 465.8 GB Ext Hard Disk
    (the working one)
    * 465.8 GB Ext Hard Disk
    VolumeName
(the working and non working together)
    * 465.8 GB Ext Hard Disk
    * 465.8 GB Ext Hard Disk
    VolumeName
If I collapse or expand the little triangle - nothing pops up. I've run all tests in Disk Utility and it checks out OK. It mounts fine and dandy on MacOS and the only differences appear that the one that won't show up has more permissions that the one that does. Its frustrating me that this disk will work when connected to a mac, but when connected directly to the AEBS - nothing .

  • Inexpensive laser that's AEBS-compatible?

Looking for an inexpensive laser printer that can be accessed over a home wireless network. Want it to plug in to the USB port on an AEBS. I can't seem to find a list that shows which laser printers are compatible with this setup.
    Any ideas and, especially, recommendations?
The network is an AL Powerbook 15, Cube and iBook G4, all running OS 10.4.3.
Currently have an Epson Stylus Photo R300 plugged into the AEBS USB port, but it's somewhat unreliable, besides the fact that the ink is a little on the expensive side.

I have a Brother HL1440 laser printer, and have had it for about 3 years. It work well with Airport and produces very good quality prints. I think I paid $199 for it and the toner cartridges are $30. They last wuite a long time, unless you print very high volume. It only comes with 1 paper tray (convertible for letter or legal), but it does have a manual feed, so if you usually use letter, but want to print something on legal, you can just manually feed the legal (or letter) there. I very much enjoy this printer. Now I'd like to find an inexpensive color laser, so if anyone has any suggestionns for that, I'd really like to hear them.

  • Once USB disk sleeps, gone for good.

When my Lacie 500 GB USB 2 disk sleeps (and sometimes even when it doesn't), it becomes unavailable to the network. It is plugged into the USB port of the AEBS via a powered Keyspan 2.0 hub.
Most of the time it works fine, mounting automatically on my MacBook and/or manually on my G4 iMac, but sometimes the green light on the hub goes out (sometimes not) and the disk is no longer available. Time interval before this happens is very random, but if the disk is mounted and in use it stays that way with no glitches. It's only when things are inactive that it tends to disappear, though if it has been working it also usually remounts just fine after the MacBook sleeps. I have checked for firmware updates for the Lacie (none) and have all the latest updates on the other hardware (both Macs running 10.4.11).
When it's "gone," it won't show up in Airdisk Utility or the menu or via the Go-->Connect to server menu. Sometimes unplugging the AC power for the hub and re-powering brings it back. If that fails, then unplugging and reconnecting the Lacie's USB cable sometimes works. Last resort, which always works, is power-cycling the drive itself.
When I look in the AEBS logs, it often shows "USB disk unplugged" when the disk has disappeared.
    Any thoughts/advice?
    -dan

No luck, but thanks for a very good diagnostic suggestion.
With the disk plugged directly into the AEBS USB port, it slept and dropped off the network. Plugging it into the hub did not revive it; it took a power-cycle of the drive.
    Are your drives partitioned?
