10.5.2 freezes on a MacBook Pro

Ever since I installed 10.5 on my MacBook Pro I have experienced system freezes 5 to 10 times per day. The freeze does not seem to be associated with any one particular application and the only way to "defrost" is to hold down the power button and restart.
Installing all of the current software updates has not helped and I've used several antivirus programs with no success. A friend of mine at work has a similar problem with his iMac.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

THe kern is a bad font and actually in this case is not the problem (i'd disable it though anyway). The problem is with your 35 duplicates.
The problem seems to be that Leopard ships with new versions of open type fonts and then apps such as MS Office install older versions. The conflict between the two is what's causing the issue.
To solve the problem you have to physically move (not disable) the older duplicates from their source folders.
Fonts are stored in three or more locations:
the /system/library/fonts folder (this is a critical folder, touch nothing).
the /library/fonts folder where the majority of your leopard installed fonts will be in
and user/library/fonts where you've have installed fonts for your own use only.
Other apps like those from Adobe and Microsoft then create their own font caches to improve application performance.
When an application looks for a fonts it starts:
1) in its own cache
2) then your user folder
3) then the library folder
4) and finally the system folder.
The problem arises because leopard has installed nice new shiny complete open type format fonts into your library folder. Office or other apps then install older slightly rusty fonts into the same folder or one higher up the ranking. Leopard expects the nice new shiny font but grabs the old rusty one first (as its in a higher priority look up folder) your RAM gets upset and there's a huge row resulting in the hang crash refusal to quit and the subsequent restart.
So what you should do:
You've identified your 35 duplicates in font book. Keep that list open to act as your reference.
You want to remove the older duplicate versions and maintain the new leopard opentype versions.
View each folder in list view so that you can see the size, kind and modification dates noting that:
The Apple supplied fonts are
a) larger in size,
b) have a newer creation date and
c) have a .ttf extension, the fonts installed by Office 2004 do not.
Your main offenders will be common fonts such as
Arial
Arial Black
Comic Sans MS
Tahoma
Trebuchet MS
Verdana
Webdings
Create a folder on your desktop and call it say 'removed fonts'
Start in the MSOffice folder (of you have one) and drag the older duplicate fonts from there into your desktop 'removed fonts' folder
Then go through you user/library fonts folder and do the same
Finish in your library/fonts folder.
Do not delete the fonts simply move them to the separate folder on your desktop.
(You can reinstall them later from there if needs be).
Even though the fonts are in separate font folders their very presence is causing the conflict.
Now go back to font book, select all fonts and run the validation on them again.
You may need to activate some fonts that were inadvertently switched off by font book.
Repeat until all duplicates are fixed and all fonts are activated and valid.
If you have office you may want to remove the office preferences files and the Microsoft folder from your user/library/preferences folder (don;t delete just drag into a separate folder.
Restart your Mac
Hope this helps and please post back with your results.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • PowerPoint keeps freezing on my MacBook Pro.  Any ideas?

Has anyone experienced a problem with PowerPoint freezing on a MacBook Pro (bought in 2011; using version 10.8.5 of OS X)?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you say "freezing" do you mean that you see the spinning beach ball of death, which eventually resolves, or does the app completely crash, and must be force quit, or you have to restart?
What specifically are you trying to do with Powerpoint when it freezes? Is it when you have video in your presentation?
How much RAM do you have?
How full is your hard drive?
A good place to start would be to boot into your recovery partition and repair your hard drive: When to Run First Aid in Mountain Lion's Disk Utility - For Dummies

  • Freeze and beachball: Macbook pro mid 2010 2.66

Freeze and beachball: Macbook pro mid 2010 2.66 sn W802... ; Boot ROM: MBP61.0057.B0C   SMC    1.58f16 in the last two days, desktop freezes on screen wake-up and sometimes when selecting other windows, mouse moves beachball, active window still works a bit. No changes no new software, reinstalled 10.6.8 plus supplemental, SMC etc. Seems to work most of the time until left idle. any ideas?

I'm glad it worked out for you.
Next time you could probably just reinstall the os ----> Might save some time.
I think reinitialising the drive with zero's is a little overkill ------> Normally you would do that only to prevent other people from recovering deleted data (say if you were selling your computer and wanted to delete your confidential information).

  • Lion 10.7.2 Constantly Freezing Crashing on MacBook Pro

I am at my wits end! My MacBook Pro (MacBookPro2,2 2006) is constantly crashing and/or freezing. Everything was perfectly fine until I installed the 10.7.2 update. Then things started to get progressively worse. Now I can't go 15 minutes without the system freezing up or crashing. It crashes 20 times a day or more and is completely unusable at this point. I really need to get work done and don't know what else to do.
It doesn't seem to matter what applications are open. I thought at first maybe it was Safari or Mail but I've had it hang or crash with just the Finder open. Sometimes it just freezes up yet, if iTunes is playing music, the music will continue to play in the background but you can't interact with anything. Sometimes the mouse pointer will still move and sometimes it won't. Sometimes I'll get the spinning beachball of death. Other times it will just instantly restart on its own. A couple times the screen just rolled to grey then died. I never get a crash report that I can post or send to Apple.
I am very technically proficient and have done absolutely everything I can think of at this point including:
    * Resetting PRAM.
    * Repairing disk permissions and running a disk check
    * Ran TechToolPro and everything came back OK.
    * Updated all software and removed any weird kernal extensions.
    * Unhooked any attached peripherals.
    * Tried different networks or switching to wired ethernet.
    * Logged in with Shift key down so no extra software loaded.
The ONLY thing that seems to work is starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key at boot. Which is what led me to think that maybe some rogue kernal extensions were to blame but I removed all but the blessed Apple extensions. Safe Mode loads only the most basic system software so is not very usable. The fact that it runs OK here makes me believe it must be a bug in Apples 10.7.2 update but who knoes what part since so much of the OS is not loaded in Safe Mode.
I've also tried running Apple Hardware Tests (AHT) but can't get it to run for the life of me. I followed another postwhere we copy the .diagnostics folder into /System/Library/CoreServices from the original software discs that came with the computer but holding down the "D" key on startup still doesn't invoke the tests. Won't run off the CD either. I get some weird circle with a slash through it. Going to take it in to the Genius Bar tomorrow and have them run the hardware tests. I'll report back after but I don't feel too sure they're going to have a good answer.
A side issue now is that, after all this, my MacBook Pro takes over half an hour to boot each time. It appears to be doing a Safe Boot no matter what even though I don't hold down the Shift key at startup. I always get the progress bar under the Apple logo and I think it is doing a fschk each time. But when it finally comes up it's not actually in Safe Boot mode. It never used to do this and I can't get it to stop. With all the crashes and now this incredibly long startup each time I'm about to throw this thing out the window.
I've read hundreds of other posts across the Internet with like experiences but no good answers. A lot of people seem to think it is an Nvidia graphics card related issue or a discrete graphics issue but my older machine doesn't have swithable graphics and it's card is ATI. But I do sometimes get strange graphic artifacts on the screen before it crashes and some Apps have lines through their interfaces so I'm wondering if the latest system update screwed up graphics drivers?
I'm posting here in the hopes that someone, anyone, can help me!!! I think Lion 10.7.2 has serious bugs and is one of the worst updates Apple has ever released.
Is anyone else having similar problems and does anyone out there have a solution?!!

FINALLY got Lion to produce a crash report during one of these disasters. Like my gut was telling me this seems graphics driver related. Here it is:

  • ITunes freezes on my macbook pro when i sync my iphone

    Hi guys --
I've been following tons of threads to get an answer - can you help?
Out of nowhere, my iPhone can't sync with iTunes - whenever I plug in my iPhone, iTunes freezes, and I get the rainbow beachball. After a bit, I get a message that my computer is set not to allow synching -- do I want to allow synching? I select yes, and then I'm told this isn't allowed. When I select override, it's still not allowed.
    Here's my specs:
    MacBook Pro (2011, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7), running OS X 10.9.4
    iTunes 11.3.1
    iPhone 5S, running iOS 7.1.2
    Here's what I've done:
    - repaired disc permissions, and restarted the computer (nothing changed.)
    - followed every suggestion here (iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) -- including installing updates to both OSs and iTunes, disabled sync (and iTunes STILL freezes), deleted every podcast I had from both my iPhone and laptop, and rebuilt my iTunes library following the instructions that they gave.
The only other thing I can think to do is to start a new user on this laptop, copy over my music (which is all backed up to an external hard drive, so no biggie - just annoying), and/or reformat my iphone or this computer. Would REALLY love not to do that. Any other suggestions or ideas?

    Hi there,
I have the same issue as you do, this has been going on for quite a while now (2 months) and I have tried everything, including creating a new user - did not work. Perhaps you might have better luck than I did.
I really don't understand how this can just start happening for no reason.
If you have any luck I would be keen to hear how you fixed the problem.
    Good luck!

  • New version of photoshop CC 2014 freezes on my Macbook pro late 2013. GPU related issue?

Since upgrading to newest version through Creative Cloud, Photoshop Freezes at start up:
    - when launched from LR5 ("modify photo in CC2014"), photoshop launches, photo is displayed, then I get a message that "an incompatibility with the graphics components was detected and that photoshop temporarily deactivated graphics components" (in french). Then freeze. Impossible to access photoshop/preferences to see the open gl settings as shown in th faqs
    - when launched directly, it opens and then freezes a few seconds afterwards
Tried to uninstall and reinstall through CC, unsuccessfully.
    Anybody seeing same behavior?
Macbook pro retina 15", late 2013, Iris Pro GPU + Nvidia GT 70M GPU, running 10.9.5, all Apple updates done.
    Thanks

  • Major freezing problem on Macbook Pro 1,1

    Hello everyone,
My MacBook Pro has been experiencing some strange behaviour lately. I'll be doing any average computing task (nothing more than word processing or Internet browsing), and the current application will lock up. Any application I touch after that will lock up until the entire system is unresponsive, including dock and Finder. It is not responsive to the force quit menu command or any other stimulus.
If I remove the battery while the AC is plugged in, or lift the notebook up to get better air supply, this usually unfreezes things, making me think this is a temperature problem—but I can't be sure.
I have reset PRAM and SMC, run TechTool diagnostics, repaired permissions and verified disk, with no change. I have also entirely restored to backup through Time Machine to a week before the problems started, with no change.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?

Have you tried creating a new user account? If the freezing goes away, it would indicate a problem with your usual account.
How full is your hard drive? Do you have at least 15% free space on it?
You might want to check out the physical health of your hard drive with this utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
If your hard drive checks out OK, you may want to try reinstalling the OS. Be sure you have a good backup before you do.
    Good luck!

  • Video Freezing on New Macbook Pro

I bought a 15" macbook pro last week, and videos are freezing regularly. Sometimes the audio continues and the video catches up after 30 seconds, sometimes not. These are online or itunes or homemade videos that my 4-year old macbook used to handle just fine. I got the larger pro because I'm away from home a lot and wanted a wider screen to watch video on. Anyone having similar problems or know ways to help alleviate this problem?

I'd be wondering whether something that you have brought across from the older machine may be giving it indigestion, mpeterd.
You might find it worth taking a look at Activity Monitor when the problem occurs to see if any process is hogging CPU time.
One known "issue" after migration from earlier Macs or OS versions can involve a new process called "fontworker" under Snow Leopard. If you have brought across old fonts from the MB then it may be that some are duplicates of Snow Leopard fonts, or corrupted, or simply too old for the new OS. Might be worth checking with Font Book for duplicated or corrupted fonts. Another possibility may be a corupted "Spotlight" index. If Activity Monitor shows a process called "mds" or "mdsworker" running overtime, then this is likely to be the cause.
There are various other possibilities here, too, though. Activity Monitor is a good place to check for such things first, before considering seeking replacement. You may well find that the problem recurs even with a new, perfectly healthy, computer when you bring things across from the old one.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • How do I stop the System Preferences from freezing on my Macbook Pro?

The System Preferences option on my MacBook Pro keeps freezing. Whenever I click on it is immediately freezes and shoes the rainbow wheel to show it is busy. I am currently running OS X 10.7.2. Can anyone please help?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • Why does my safari keep freezing on my macbook pro.

I purchased the 13-inch Macbook Pro in 2011. I have OS X 10.7.5. My Safari keeps freezing. Could someone please give me some advise on how to fix this.
    Thanks

What exactly happens when it freezes, and how do you recover?

  • Power Button freezes up my MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro freezes up everytime I hit the power button. Not even the mouse will move. I have to force it to shut down everytime. It began happening the moment I left the Mac Store for another issue I was having. What has happened? Also, I can't find the HD anywhere on my computer.

I suggest you go back to the Apple Store and ask them to fix whatever damage they did to your system. What should happen when you press the power button is that a dialog appears prompting you to restart, sleep, shut down, or cancel. It's a standard feature and there's no reason why you shouldn't use it.

  • ITunes Freezes/Crashes On MacBook Pro When Connecting iPad

iTunes (v10.7) crashes on my new MacBook Pro Retina (OSX 10.8.2) almost all the time when I connect my iPad Retina (IOS 6.0.1). When i connect via USB, iTunes comes up but the iPad does not appear as a recognizable device. This problem started about a week ago and prior to that there was no problem connecting. What can I do to correct this problem? Is it related to iTunes 10.7? Is it related to a MacBook Pro Retina problem? Is it related to an OSX 10.8.2 problem? Is it related to an iPad Retina problem? Is it related to an IOS 6.0.1 problem?
I have tried using a different iPad-to-Mac USB cable to connect with no success.

Turns out all I had to do was reboot the Mac and the problem was cleared.

  • Why does Netflix freeze my new Macbook Pro?

About a week after getting my new macbook pro I was watching Netflix and the episode froze in one spot and I kept hearing a faultering sound. I couldn't open the Task Manager equivalent and couldn't escape so I had to force shut off my computer. Now once or twice a day while watching Netflix it does this and I have no idea how to fix it. I've tried reinstalling Silverlight but nothing works. HELP!
