10.5.2 killed dvd player

10.5.2 has killed dvd player. when i load a dvd to watch it just hangs with the beach ball, in fact, my entire system just hangs. i've removed the dvd.plist, tried it again and issue persists. also booted into safe boot then rebooted back and issue persists. not sure what to do at this point. my last resort will be to archive and install and not do the 10.5.2 update again.

My install of 10.5.2 got stuck also.
My DVD Player now freezes my computer (12" 1.33 GHz Powerbook).
No kernel panic, or at least not the warning screen, but the computer gets completely unresponsive, except for the mouse still moving.
I tried DVD player, and it also freezes, but less hardcore. The app becomes unresponsive, but menu-sounds are still generated.
I reinstalled DVD Player, threw away receipts for the recent 4 updates, reinstalled them, twice.
Apple, please fix this!

  • Graphics Update (and/or Security Update 5) killed DVD Player Playback???

DVD player worked fined before I applied the Graphics Update (and the Security Update 5).
Both done through the Software Update process
Now the DVD Player application gives me a black screen. (The sound is playing fine).
(Tried different DVDs, including one which I was half thru watching on my MacBook Pro)

I remembered I did one more thing. I swichted from the 32-bit startup to the 64-bit (using "32- or 64-bit Kernel Startup Mode Selector.app")
I now switched back, and DVD Player is working fine again.
So that is what causes the problem. (although I don't understand why, because even 32-bit applictions should run fine in the 64-bit Kernel mode)
I hope Apple will fix this issue soon.

  • My dvds that are made from iDVD will not play in a standard dvd player. Can anyone help me?*

I am running iDVD v 7.1.2(1158).  I used to be able to make dvds that would play in a standard dvd player.  As of today I cannot.  I do not know what has changed and I do not know what needs to be updated.  Can someone assist me?
The dvds that I can make will play from a disk image and they can play perfectly fine in a computer but not in a standard dvd player.  I am using an external dvd burner, (The same one  have always used) to create the dvds.  I am using iDVD to author them.

    • Material used: Video-Codec and Photo file format and Audio file format - matters too. I use
    - Video - StreamingDV .dv or AIC
    - Photos as .jpg (only)
    - Audio as .aiff 16bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz (ONLY - never .mp3 or directly from iTunes - all converted to .aiff first)
With this I do not mean any setting in iDVD - BUT the raw material used in iMovie / FinalCut / Avid 100 / Adobe Premiere
As this usually matters - later in iDVD
How did You Export from Video-editing program used ? I prefer
    • iMovie HD6 - just drop the movie project icon (NOT iMovie Icon - the PROJECT one) over into iDVD big menu window (avoiding - drop-zones as they are for other tasks)
    • iMovie'08 to '11 - Share to MEDIA BROWSER - AND AS MEDIUM - not HD or other resolution as iDVD does a bad downscaling job.
    • iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) - Share as 480p - Import this into iDVD
    • FinalCut (Pro or Express) - Export as QuickTime .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT
    • Adobe Premiere - I don't know - not tested Yet
    • Avid 100 - I don't know - not tested Yet
Cleaning the DVD-burner - If it Burns DVDs OK then that's may be not the problem - But if it only burns CDs OK then either the DVD-burning-laser is dirty or broken.
It is very easy to kill this DVD-laser as it over-heats if one burns several DVDs in a row. I only burn three at a time - then let it cool down for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs.

  • DVD Player

    Hi,
I've ripped a movie DVD I own and burned it to a Sony DVD-R .
It plays fine on a DVD player connected to a TV set, but not in DVD Player on my MacBook Pro with Leopard. Keeps telling me that it's not recognized or something.
    What can be wrong?
    Thank you,
    hmcl

Well Malcolm - you are making me think today : ) You see I just use the standard settings on Toast... so I had to go into their help section to find out what UDF was. The only place they talk about that is in the making of a DVD-ROM- which from looking at their presets, I would have had to choose make a data disk.. I choose the video DVD presets. That may be where my issue lies with it opening automatically in Macs DVD player. When I have time to kill, I may just give that a shot and see what happens- I just always thought data disks were for archiving my files or something for long term storage. Now I'm not so sure. Anyway, thanks for giving my brain cells a workout today : ) - you were helpful with your posts - I appreciate your time and thoughts on this situation.

  • DVD player goes fullscreen, will not quit

Hello. I'm posting this here as I was unable to find a forum for DVD Player.
When I put a DVD in, DVD player launches, goes full screen, will not minimize, will not stop, only way to crash is to F11 and then kill the app with a mouse click (right-click on a multi-button mouse, force quit).
I now live in fear of putting a DVD in my drive.
    How do I stop this?
    Mac OSX 10.9.1.

Try deleting the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder. But remember:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For  Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

  • DVD Player is broken

I am finally admitting to myself that the Leopard DVD player app is broken. in almost every movie I attempt to watch, I get the infernal "Skipping over damaged area" message even when there is nothing wrong with the disc. Has anyone managed to find a solution to this? It really kills the idea of a Mac Mini as a HTPC.

yup...im having the same issue. and this is on a REPLACEMENT mac book pro that apple very grudgingly replaced after the keyboard, display, optical board (twice!), motherboard and battery ALL had to be fixed on the old one. i say old...it was only a year and a half old and had all these issues. and mac were awful about it...sigh....and now the new one seems to have this issue.
if you do a google search you'll see that this appears to be a bug with leopard...the updates seem to be causing more issues than they solve, and none of them address this particular problem with the optical drives.
has anyone out there in apple read these posts????
    ideas apple?
    c'mon lads....sort it out please.

  • Problems with Superdrive and DVD Player

The first problem is that for a long time, I haven't been able to eject disks by pushing the eject button (on the keyboard, in DVD player, etc) - I have to manually drag the DVD/CD on the desktop to the trash can/eject, or click the eject button in Finder. I know the button itself works fine, because I can eject disks in my Ubuntu Linux partition.
The second problem is that sometimes, while playing DVDs through DVD Player, the Player and/or the DVD itself in the drive freezes up. I can't quit the program, I can't eject the disk, I have to reboot to kill the program and eject the disk. This has happened on random DVDs (only, not any CDs), both that I own and that I received from NetFlix. The disks themselves are not bad, as they will run fine in VLC.
Any help with either of these problems? For what it's worth, the problems both started well before I partitioned the hard drive to install Linux.

Nope, didn't have a clue about that. Had to get my hard drive replaced, but everything's working fine now and holding the eject button down for a couple of seconds works.
    Thanks!

  • Is there a way to create a slideshow viewable with a DVD player?

Hi there, is there amongst the Apple programs (or else) something that would allow me to show my digital photos on TV with a DVD player? Manually commanded with the remote, or with auto time lapse, fading or transitions?

I tested both Photo Magico and iDVD. Both produce a nice slideshow with good image quality when previewed on the computer. PhotoMagico has some really professional grade blending and zooming effects, and allows placement of multiple sound tracks, which is not possible with iDVD where you just drop one file and it plays in buckle.
The problem with both is that when the slide show is encoded, it looses too much quality! Images loose their detail, their colour depth, and they flicker inacceptably. The worst is with PhotoMagico who sends the already compressed file to iDVD to be compressed again and burnt. The loss of quality from the very neat preview to the resulting DVD is enormous. Sent to Toast Titanium, it's a little better but aliasing effects are still very annoying.
I then tried a slideshow made directly in iDVD. The quality is merely acceptable, still not professional. The images are so compressed that they loose their details, and the edges of the frames and every straight line in the images flicker...
Compressing an original 5 Gb slideshow made of JPEG files to 1,5 Gb seems an enormous rate of compression. Is this the way it is with those programs, or have I missed some settings somewhere? Is there no way to preserve the initial image size when passed to DVD? Alternatively, would the pro version DVD Studio Pro have more flexibillity? It's there on my computer, but the interface is turning me away! ...
    Thanks again for any hints!
    Paul

  • DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing using a variety of DVDs.  I have OS 10.6.8, and have repaired permissions, verified the disc, and installed the 10.6.8 update combo.  Several previous questions have adressed this problem.  What is the solution?

DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing.  I have seen here that a number of other people have had this problem.  I recently started one DVD, and when I went back to it, it opened to a black screen twice.  It also crashes with other DVDs after I scroll ahead or back.  It gives an error message that it is skipping damaged areas, or sometines error 69889.  Playing this on a PC, however, there is no problem.  I repaired the permissions, verified the disc, and installed the OS 10.6.8 combo update, all to no avail.  Techs told me that it is usually the hardware, so I bought a LaCie external combo drive.  Still crashes.  Looked on Apple downloads and they don't list a 5.4 to replace this version.  Mac informer.com offers a free download for DVD 5.5- should I try this?  Why doesn't Apple fix this problem?

Your suggestions did not help.  I repeated them again after the first try did not succeed.  Any other ideas?
Would installing another copy of DVD 5.4 help?  How can I get another copy of DVD player 5.4, since Apple does not seem to offer it?  I do have the disc for Snow Leopard, but am not extremely tech savy (and maybe it is the same corrupted version).

  • Installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 on MacBook Pro OS 10.7.5, now my DVD player does not work. Ideas?

I installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 on MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.5. Now my DVD player will not work. Any ideas?

Problem solved. Yes, it was a coincidence. The problem had to do with my DVD preferences, not the Adobe installation. Thanks for your reply.

  • DVD player full screen on external display

I'm looking for a way to play my DVD full screen on my external display while I can work in other apps on the main screen. Preferrably with Apple DVD Player (OS X 10.7 Lion in my case). Any ideas? Hidden settings perhaps?
It's stuff like this makes feel let down by Apple. It's natural feature to want this like for instance when playing DVD on a big screen in front of an audience and prepare something on the main display for viewing.

I know I can do this already with VLC. For some discs that don't play well in VLC I'd prefer DVD Player though.

  • Satellite C855D Toshiba DVD player display suddenly stopped displaying

Please help as its now beyond me. The DVD player has suddenly just stopped. I can hear it and control it but cannot see it. I have checked the diplay button but its all ok.
    Help

    Im sorry IJK.
I thought it could be possible to download the Toshiba DVD player but it seems that this software is licensed and it cannot be downloaded from Toshiba driver page.
Its part of the Toshiba image. So you can get this tool only reinstalling the Toshiba image using the HDD recovery or the created Toshiba Recovery medium.
However, recovering the system would mean that the whole system would be installed again congaing previous HDD format. So in such case the data backup should be created before starting such procedure.
Another option: you could try to set the system back to early time point before the Toshiba DVD tool has crashed.
Last but not least you could try to install other freeware DVD player software like VLC player. It one of the best player software which is available on the market

  • Problems with DVD Player 3.0.1 in G4/466

Problems with DVD Player in G4/466
Yes, I've a g4/466 with two disks. In the first there's system 9.2.2 and the DVD player goes perfect. In the second I've system 10.2 and the 9.2, and the DVD Player (3.0.1) on the system 10 begins to jump in the dock, but stop and nothing happens, I can't open it...
There's any way to reinstal it form system disks???
Or any download to check the error?
    Thanks

    1. Try using Pacifist to extract it from your Mac OS X 10.2 installation disks, and then run the combo updater for your version of Mac OS X and any applicable DVD Player updates.
    2. Open the Console application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and look for lines relating to the DVD Player.

  • How Do I Use my MacBook Pro to Watch a DVD From External DVD Player

    Hello Everyone!
While waiting for Apple TV to become available in my place of work, I want to use my MacBook Pro monitor for watching a DVD movie played on an external DVD player. The DVD player I have is an LPC-D1000, which is a new model. While Mac has its own DVD player, I'm trying to make use of my LG DVD player. If that's possible, please guide me on how to do it.
    Thank you.

You could use Elgato Systems' EyeTV product to view external video sources on your MBP.
There is additional cost involved, but it would achive what you want. You can buy the Hybrid product, and connect your external DVD player via Composite (red, white and yellow connectors) to your MBP via the EyeTV.
