10.5.2 resurrected my dead ethernet card as 'ethernet 2'?

not too long after leopard came out, i tried to set up time machine, and kept getting errors. come to find out, i had a 'dead' ethernet card in my g5 powermac (it had worked just prior to upgrading to 10.5) and time machine relies on the MAC address. so a couple days ago i upgrade to 10.5.2, and all of the sudden my ethernet card is working again (still can't get time machine to work but i'm working on it).
what's strange (besides ethernet being somehow killed and resurrected by 10.5) is that in system preferences under 'network', the normal 'ethernet' side tab still seems to not be working, but instead i have an 'ethernet 2' tab that is the operational ethernet. does anyone have any idea what's going on, or has this happened with anyone else?

I'm sure it isn't an issue with my Airport Express, since no networks are showing up for me. It's not my network. It's the Airport card in my computer (or better yet, it's how the OS interacts with the Airport card). When I restart everything is fine. My interim solution is to change my power settings so that it doesn't put the hard drive to sleep, but I'd rather not have to leave it like that.

  • Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board?

My ethernet port went dead on my IMac.  I unplugged the ethernet cable and plugged it into my laptop and it worked instantly.  I am still able to connect wirelessly.  I bought an apple USB to Ethernet converter and plugged it in.  It worked for about 3 days and then it went dead.  Once again I was able to unplug the ethernet cable, plug it into my laptop and instantly had a connection.  Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board and if not how do I figure out which logic board I need?
    Thanks
    Step

This problem baffled me. I kept getting the "ethernet cable unplugged" error after testing my cables good. Was abut to write it off as port gone bad when I found this thread.
The YouTube video reference above fixed my problem. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1P6X87qArs)
Basically go to SETTINGS/NETWORK. Then highlight your ETHERNET port and click the ADVANCED button. From there click the HARDWARE tab.
    Set
    CONFIGURE to MANUALLY
SPEED to whatever your ethernet speed is, in my case 1000baseT
DUPLEX - FULL DUPLEX, FLOW CONTROL
    Leave MTU at Standard
    Hit OK.
Then don't forget to hit APPLY. I didn't do this the first couple of times assuming hitting OK applied these settings. You gotta hit APPLY.
In about two seconds, my Ethernet connected again.
I went back and reset it to AUTOMATIC just to test and after doing so got the cable unplugged error again. So I am leaving it on manual and it's working.

  • Mini ethernet port as a solution to imac dead ethernet port

I have an old imac 2002 version and it works great but the ethernet port is dead ...not sure why...but I have checked the cables and connections with another computer and they are fine...So assuming that the port is dead
Can I purchase a mini and use the ethernet port as my connection to the internet via dsl modem and still use my imac...what I'm wondering is can the mini act as a second hard drive and can I network it to my imac via firewire and the use the etherport from the mini to get on the internet....directing it all through my imac?
I have been told in order to get my imac to connect with a dead ethernet port I need to purchase a new motherboard. That seems like a simple solution...but my imac works great except the ethernet...so if I can find a solution that will just offer me a ethernet connection to the internet and still let me use my imac and give me more memory ...all the better...
I am not well versed on the mini....So I need some expert advise as to whether it could be a alternative solution...that would also give me additional harddrive.
    Help!

Yes indeed. Your plan will work (I have done similar with mini/powerbook and powermac).
In a nutshell - set up the new mini to use the ethernet. Once the network is running, go to Sharing preference pane and select the internet "tab". Choose to share the Built-In Ethernet with the Built-in Firewire - and click start.
Then connect the mini to the iMac with a firewire cable. Set the iMac to use firewire for its network.
The only possible gotcha is if you are not on the latest OS (this should work back a version or two - but I don't recall when I first did this). Second gotcha might be the firewall on the mini. You may have to enable logging to see if the firewall is preventing the iMac to connect in and through to the internet. If so - you have to live with opening up some ports on your firewall or learn how to configure that one iMac to get in and not the rest of the world (assuming you don't have a router or other firewall device to protect the new mini.)
    Cheers and good luck.

  • Dead AirPort Card?

    Hello, hope someone can help.
I have been using AirPort Express for about 2 years, I installed my own AirPort card in my iMac G5 1.8GHz. Last week I upgraded to Leopard (this maybe irrelevant) and today my iMac is seeing no base stations. I have a Windows XP laptop on the same network which is running fine on the AirPort Express base station (hence this post). For good measure I rebooted the router (Netgear) attached to the AirPort Express to no avail. System Profiler still acknowledges that a card is present, and AirPort Utility says that it is unable to find any base stations. Though it doesn't say that there is no card present.
What steps should I take next? Has my card given up the ghost?

    HI
I have an Airport card that is detected by Network preferences, but can not connect to the network. Then on rare occasions, it will work for an hour and then mysteriously quit, while other users have no problems with the network. I've tried most of the posted solutions, have the latest security and OS updates, I've tried updating the AIrport card with 3 .pkg installers located in main-drive/Library/Receipts (AirportConfigApps.pkg; AirportTi2005-001.pkg and AirportDrivers.pkg) but they all say my software is up to date.
While, none of these solve the problem. I suspect its a firmware / driver problem. If I hold down the option key while clicking on the Airport signal icon and select "About Airport...", I see this for the dead Airport card
version 412.8; menu extra: 412.8.0; framework: 427.6.0; driver: 349.3.0, etc...
Another airport card that works all the time with no problems has this:
version 421.11; menu extra: 421.11.0; with the same framework and driver versions.
Is there some way of updating the non-functional Airport card to version 421.11? Maybe that would solve the problem? Or maybe its really on its way out?

  • Qosmio F10-100 - dead graphic card

I bought laptop Toshiba Qosmin F10. It has a dead graphics card. Are the graphics cards in these laptops built onto the motherboard or are they seperate.
    Where can i get one?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, the graphic card replacement is not easy or not possible.
In my knowledge mostly the whole motherboard must be replaced.
However, you should definitely contact the authorized service provider in your country for more details and for the fixing
    So good luck

  • Screen Distoring, Possible Dead Video Card, PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7

I've had my Dual 2.7 G5 since early 2005. It has been a great computer for me over the years. Noisy as ****, but great. A month ago my screen started to distort every now and then (see pics below). The computer would freeze when the screen distorted. Then when I would reboot, the distortion and artifacting would occur even at the grey boot up screen and lock up. With enough reboots it would finally get back to the desktop and be fine for a few days. This no longer works anymore. I haven't successfully booted the computer in over 2 weeks. After the distorted grey boot screen it will go black and all you see is the artifacts, never getting to the desktop. Is this a dead video card? I'm running the stock AGP Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT.

If this is a dead video card, do you have any suggestions for the best AGP replacement. I'm looking for something powerful. All I'm finding are very pricey 256mb cards. I'm willing to pay for a powerful card. Thanks very much. I don't want to give up on this G5!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
    Agreed, the card is toast.
Look on eBay for used OEM cards, as that is your best bet.
The same card is a good choice, with only the Mac edition Radeon X800XT or X850XT being more powerful.
There is yet another alternative, that in a flashed Geforce 7800 GS, which is THE most powerful AGP card available for Macs.
For the money, a flashed 7800 GS is the best bet.

  • MBP Early 2011and half dead Ethernet.

    Hi,
My broadband internet modem (ADSL2+) is wired to the AirPort Extreme which in turn is wired to another airport express in another room. This creates a roaming network and all works well. I have a wired connection from the extreme to my MBP and the Ethernet on the MBP detects the connection just fine subsequently getting an assigned ip et al.This provides good speed and stability. I use wifi for all my other devices like iPhone, iPad and some other wifi  devices.
A few days back my ISP had issues and the technician came over to resolve the issue with the phone line. I then realised that my my MBP would not connect directly to the ADSL modem using Ethernet (assuming I had no wifi). I have tried different cables but nothing would get the Mac's Ethernet to detect the cable. It would just say cable unplugged. The same doesn't happen if I take a wired connection from the router using the same cable. I have also tried a different modem and the mac still won't connect directly to it. I would have thought the Ethernet is malfunctioning but what confuses me is that a wired connection from the router works just fine. As such I am forced to use wireless and cannot connect my mac to the modem directly. Is this a fried Ethernet port? If yes how does it work when a wired connection is taken from the router.
Here is what I have tried so far,
    - different cables.
    - different modem
    - different laptop (windows) - in this case the same cable and modem would work just fine with the windows laptop.
    - smc reset on mac
    - various settings on network preferences for LAN, Manual, automatic, MTU size, half full duplex arc.
    - setting the service order
    - disabling and rent bling the service.
A dead Ethernet is not even the last thing I would want as my mac is out of warranty and replacing the logics board would make a big whole in my pocket,
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

It often won't even boot far enough to start booting from the hard drive; so I doubt it's a dead HD.
Plenty of space was left. At last check, 20 GB. Probably a little less than that now, but not significantly so.
My restore discs are in storage at the moment, I'll be trying to dig them out later. But again, I can boot to Target Disk Mode; and it runs just as long as a "normal" boot would. When it crashed in TDM, the screen changed to static before it turned the screen all the way off. A second time, (since writing my first message,) booting into TDM crashed by merely 'freezing' the display, with the FireWire logo no longer jumping around, and the disk became unreadable from the host system. This is more than just a bad disk.
I will try to boot from the diagnostic disc, but I need to find it first. (Remodeled the home office earlier this year; and everything's all put in places I can't remember...)

  • Dead Ethernet Card

i have an emac USB 2.0 and im pretty sure my NIC is dead. All I can seem to get is a self assigned ip address. many computers on the network (3 emacs of the exact same model). I have tried these steps
    power cycled
    direct connection to modem
    created new location
    pulled the entire /lib/preferences/systemconfiguration
    reset PMU and NVRAM
changed to a good known cable
booted to leopard install DVD network utilities
still all i can get is a self assigned ip address. weird failure but still seems like a hardware failure. So if anyone else has an ideas what i can do next, great but im looking for a ethernet-USB adapter that works with the emac. I was thinking the macbook air one but of course they say it ONLY works with a macbook air. SO if anyone knows of a ethernet-USB adapter that works with an emac USB 2.0?

    Hello,
Well ok I have one last option for you to try. You can manually put in the IP Addresses because if you assign it, then its still self assigned. Well First reset the modem. It will have the IP Address "192.168.1.0" If you have a router, then unplug it for 30 seconds, and again reset the modem, once the modem restarts, then plug in the router. The router's IP Address should be "192.168.1.1" If you don't have a router, then you should connect your eMac directly to the modem, reset the modem, then type "192.168.1.1" as your IP Address. See if that works. If you have a router, then try this, connect your eMac directly to the LAN 1 Port on the back of the router and use this IP Address, "192.168.1.2" With every step, your Subnet Mask should stay 255.255.255.0 ONLY put in a router IP Address if you are connected to one. If so it will always be "192.168.1.1" Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Your Fellow eMac User,
    Matt

  • Dead ethernet card on 1.25 mini.

in the short of it, our house got hit by lightning and it fried the therenet cards on all the computers that were connected at the time. my question is this:
is there a wat to install a new ethernet card onto the logic board, that wont be to much of a hassel?
or if with the card fried the way it is, would it prevent me from installing and operating an airport upgrade kit with the machine? i have no problem installing it i've done the install before. but need to know if it would be a waste of $$$ if it simply cant communicate now.

You would need to be very talented with a soldering iron to replace the built-in ethernet controller on the Mac Mini.
But, you can replace the built-in Ethernet with a USB to Ethernet adapter.
You can read up a bit on the compatible models here:
    http://www.sustworks.com/site/newsusbethernet.html
You should be able to find several pre-packaged options at your local CompUSA, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc.
Just look for one that has Mac OS X listed in it's compatibility section on the retail box.
To answer your question about the wireless option:
No, the damage to the ethernet chip does not automatically mean that the wireless option would not work.
But, keep in mind that electrical surges travel. So, while it may not have damaged the circuitry that connects to the wireless kit, it very well could have.
So, the only way you are going to know whether that interface is still good is to try it.
Obviously, since you didn't have a wireless kit installed, that hardware is not damaged. But, it is entirely possible that the circuitry which interfaces with the kit may have gotten damaged.
    Hope this helps.

  • Battery & Dead Ethernet port question

So if my battery is showing no outward signs of getting old but my ethernet port is dead could an older battery cause this? (All other possibilites covered but a new battery... prior to a PCI card purchase... thought I would ask...)

My ethernet port won't work either, so I bought a PCI card. It has the same behavior as my ethernet port. Neither the card nor the port will connect with DHCP anymore (worked for 4 years and stopped a few days ago). If I specify an IP address it will connect manually, however it will only connect me to the router, meaning, I can access the mac on the network with another computer but cannot access the internet on the mac (other computers are connected to the same router and on the internet).
I originally thought it was the battery. Then I thought it was Ethernet port failure until the new PCI card I bought did the same thing. I’ve flashed the PRAM, replaced the battery, and reinstalled OS X. Nothing seems to fix it.
Please help. Thank you in advance.

  • Dead Ethernet Connection?

I can no longer access the internet. I tried different cable modems, cables & went through the utilities on the Mac Disc & still it doesn't work.
Ea. time I tried to log on, the computer (which still works) would say Network failed, Server failed, etc., etc.
I didn't have internet access after a severe lightning & thinderstorm went through our area a few weeks ago.
If the Ethernet is dead, what can I do to get internet access or networking capability again? Also, if I went the wireless route, would I not still need to have an operable Ethernet connection? Thanks for any and all input. I hope I won't need to get another computer.

I have a similar problem. I went out of town, and came back to a dead modem. I ran out of room on my serge protector, and didn't have the modem plugged into a serge protector. I now bought a new modem, and a serge protector that protects phone lines and cable lines as well.
I can get internet access now. via the USB cable, but not via the ethernet cable. By plugging into an ibook, I discovered that the ethernet cables are still working. But I have vonage phone service, which still isn't working. I think the serge came through the cable, to the modem, which is totally fried, no lights or anything. Then to the vonagae phone device via the ethernet cable, then to the mac mini via the ethernet cable. The phone device still has some lights, but it's not fully working.
I think I need a new phone device. My question is this: is there some sort of ethernet card inside the mac mini that can be replaced? Or should I just buy new phone device, and connect the modem via USB port?

  • How to set up wired PowerBook (dead airport card) to wireless network

The airport card in our PowerBook isn't working and not worth fixing. I wanted to hook it up via Ethernet to Clearwire modem, but it appears there is only one Ethernet port on it which I have to use for my airport express for my iMac to access. There is a USB port on the airport but didn't know if that would do anything. Darn, I'm usually good at this stuff, so please help!

Wow, thanks for that fast reply.
The PowerBook is about 6 years old, apple called it vintage. Although it has airport in it, this happened once before where the antenna or whatever came dislodged. Hubby likes to fall asleep with laptop in... His lap!
I also have a 2008 iMac running off the same airport and was trying to see if I could daisy chain something up. I have a FireWire cable too. I hear you smiling...
So if you can explain what a wireless USB adapter is I'd appreciate it. I thought I could just hook it straight up to my modem or airport express but apparently each have only one Ethernet.
I'm the kind that sits and looks at what I have, so never would have thought about buying more stuff! :)

  • Dead ethernet - options? solutions?

My ethernet connection on my G5 seems to be have failed. Yesterday morning it was there; after work it was gone. Running Diagnostics from the Network settings panel tells me that there is no cable connected to my ethernet port, which of course there is.
Used the same cable (and a 2nd cable, just for good measure) to use the same ethernet set-up on my old PC, and it works fine, verifying that my ethernet cable is good, my modem is good, and my cable provider is still feeding me my internet juice.
Powered down G5 and cable modem. Reset PRAM. Repaired disk permissions. Reset the PMU. Did the Hopi Indian Ethernet Connectivity Dance. No results.
So, have I definitively determined that my ethernet port is dead? Or are there other things to try?
And, assuming my ethernet port is dead, what are my options?
I'm hoping that under AppleCare I can get this thing fixed, but I'm guessing there are hoops to jump through, so I'm looking for a temporary solution while I wait. Is there a way to make my mac and cable modem talk to each other through USB or Firewire? A way that's cheaper than the other option I see: buying an AirPort base station. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the AirPort base station, but we're a one computer household right now (I don't count the rickety Win98 machine I used to test the cable modem), so dropping a couple hundred dollars to broadcast my internet connection 2 feet seems like overkill.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Just an update, 'cause I hate when I search the forums, find people asking the same questions as me, and never find anyone posting how they resolved it.
Talked to the Apple Help desk, they had me do many things that I had already tried: play with the system settings and ping the local computer. The ping went normal, but no tweaking of the system's network settings could bring the port back to life, so the support person had my throw out a system folder/file that held the network settings and then reboot (sorry, not sure what file was trashed). After reboot, I no longer had the "ethernet is not plugged in" message. Instead, it acted like the ethernet didn't exist at all. I could check it or uncheck it in my available ports and move it around, but it wouldn't show up at all in my port synopsis on the front page of my network settings.
They wanted me to do an Archive and Install wihtout saving User Preference (or whatever the lingo is) of the OS. Instead (because I don't know how to revive the archive) I just installed the base OS from the DVDs on to an external firewire drive and booted from that. Still no success, and tech support still wanted me to do the Archive and Install, so I did. And the ethernet port remains dead. At this point they said to take it into the shop and have it fixed as it's still under warranty. That's my job for this weekend. I'll let you know how that goes, but it doesn't give much hope to folks with the same problem. I was hoping for a software fix I could do from home, but it looks like the port is really and truly dead.
A related question: Is there an easy way to revert to an archived OS, or do I have to re-add all the users, upgrade the OS back 10.4.6, and pull those folders up manually?

  • How to deauth. Photoshop CS3 on computer w/ dead network card?

    Hi,
The network card on my ~4-6 years old Windows XP PC at work died and the tech guy said the network card is part of the motherboard so it would make more sense to just get a new machine instead of fixing the existing machine.  Since I will be getting a new machine, I was wondering how to deauthorize the Photoshop CS3 that is currently on the broken computer since I can't get on the network.  I have the Photoshop CS3 install disk and codes and will need to reinstall Photoshop on the new machine once it arrives.  Thank you.

    and the tech guy said
I agree with Marian - any halfway savvy network admin usually has a cheap replacement card in reserve or an USB to Ethernet adaptor that just need to be plugged in. Even without the correct driver, they normally run as a "Generic ethernet card on adress XX:XX:XX:XX", they may just be locked into the slowest of modes. That aside, calling is of course the next best alternative. It's really no big deal, as long as your current install is still functioning and you are able to produce the verification code.
