10.5.2 update and Leopard Graphics update = no sleep mode

All, After updating my MacBook Pro to 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics update, my computer will not longer enter sleep mode after a specified time. I can manually set the computer to sleep mode, but it will not automatically go to sleep mode. I have tried resetting the System Management Control Center VIA http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and everything else in that doc.
Any suggestions?
TIA Jon

Call AppleCare and see if they can help.
Regular trouble shooting
1) Create a new account, name it test or something
2) log into that account to see if the behavior changes
3) If it does, then there is some problem in your own account.
4) If it doesn't, restart.
5) If the behavior still doesn't change, there is some system configuration error
In this case
6) Open Disk Utility. Verify your disk, then repair permissions (not likely to fix the problem but will at least eliminate that possibilty)
7) Get a copy of Leopard Cache Cleaner and do a MODERATE cache cleaning
8) Restart
If still not fixed, reset PRAM and the SMU. Look on the Apple web site for instructions for your particular computer.
If still not different, do an Archive and Install. However go to the Apple web site and download the 10.5.2 Combo updater first. After you Archive and Install from either the disk that came with your computer (assuming that it is Leopard) or the retail Leopard installer. Then run the combo updater. Then run Software Update.
These problems are disturbing and really shouldn't happen, but they do. However, they can be fixed and you'll find that Mac OS is, overall, much better than the alternatives.
BTW, I just went through this whole mess for crashes on wake from sleep (USB issues) and failure to sleep (printer driver issue). Another computer had DHCP problems and actually needed a reinstall. However both of them are working fine now even though it was a pain getting there.

Since I upgraded to OS 10.6.8 from 10.5.x my 2x3GHz quad-core Intel Xeon desktop spontaneously turns off as if I pulled the plug. Mostly it happens when there is no open software and it's in the sleep mode (because it spends more time like that), but it has happened while I'm working. It just suddenly quits.

This is a suspicious sign of power supply failure. I would have that checked into. Others who have had similar problems have had the power supplies replaced which fixed the issue.

  • My (2008) macbook pro, running 10.5.8 runs for about 30 seconds and then goes into deep sleep mode.  After significant difficulty awakening, it runs for 30 seconds and....start repeating here.  It did this once before about a year ago.

And yes, I've shut dwn and restarted multiple times, rebooted in terminal mode and run fsck, rebooted and reset the parameter ram, yadda-yadda......
    Anybdy got any ideas?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery (to remove the battery - click here: MacBook or MacBook Pro).
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Still having problems? Replace steps 6 and 7 with the following:
Reconnect just the MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer,
    Then reconnect the battery.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Update to 10.6.3 and having problems returning from sleep mode

    Hi,
Updated yesterday to 10.6.3 and having issues returning the laptop from sleep mode.
I close the lid and the laptop goes to sleep but when opening the laptop I just get a blank screen. I can hear the hard drive start up but nothing is displayed on the screen and the sleep light is constantly on. Have tried various combinations of key presses to get it back but nothing works. I end up powering the laptop off in the end.
Anyone else have this problem? Or know how to resolve it.
I have run daily, weekly, monthly maintenance scripts, cleared system and user cache and repaired disk permission but I'm still getting the issue. I have a Time Machine backup but it dates back a month so I'm reluctant to restore.
    Cheers,
    Luke

I'm having a similar problem that I may have cracked. My screen is on but the backlight is off (so the image is practically 100% on resume from hibernate. Have you reset the pram and cleared the smc?

  • Macbook Pro trackpad and keyboard freezes after attempting sleep mode

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".
This has been happening a lot when I am using Skype while talking to someone with video and sound. The computer tries to go on sleep mode because I am not typing or touching it - it thinks I am away because I am just talking and watching the person on the other side.
I touch the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode and with that it freezes the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse" cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and a study I am conduting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it sleep ever. I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

this is in the wrong category. I added a new message to the right category: MacBook Pro but I don't know how to delete it from here.

  • Issue X200s and ultrabase : sounds beep in sleeping mode

    hello all,
My problem consist in desactivation of beep sounds when i plug my computer Lenovo X200s in docking station after sleep mode. description of problem :
-My computer is plugged in docking station,
    -I activate the sleep mode,
    -I undock my computer,
-I dock my computer and push the start button.
At this time, computer beep very strongly and the only one solution is to undock the computer.
I just have this problem with the sleep mode.
If i do the same with a lenovo T400, i don't have the problem. Anyone have an idea to stop this beep (i'm sure that is a security but we prefer no sound rather than this one!! ;-)
For your information, I already check windows power settings and lenovo power setting but I dind't find anything!!
    Best regards;-)

the option to enable/disable power-status-change beeps is in the BIOS of the X200... somewhere.
press the Thinkvantage button at startup when the screen says it is suitable to do so, and then follow the on-screen instructions to access the BIOS.
if you have configured a BIOS password, you may need to enter it.
i am currently insufficiently motivated to shut down my X200 to look for the options menu location. if you need help, please ask and then i'll look for it.

  • MacBook pro will not reboot and seems to be in sleep mode

I have a MacBook Pro and I had a USB side drive hooked to it and shut down.  When I went to reboot after unplugging usb drive, the Laptop seems to be stuck in sleep mode.  The boot up screen does not appear but the light where you open the screen it lit.  It also makes a sound to start booting but it never boots.   The computer was in great running order before this occurred.

    Hi mediahero and Welcome
    Try this:
Hold the power button down for 10 seconds, wait a further ten then press and release the power button in the usual way.
    Good luck

  • Computer freezes when pressure is applied and also won't exit sleep mode

I have a macbook pro mid 2010 with an i7 at 2.66 GHz, 8 Gb of RAM,  a 500 Gb seagate hybrid drive and is running on 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). The RAM and harddrive were installed by me a couple years ago and I generally haven't had any issues with them (I did try to install 10.8.6 but ended up reverting back to 10.8.5 via time machine). When I put pressue on the bottom of the base my computer instantly freezes, the display will  do some funky nonsense stuff (not every time) and sometimes followed by 3 beeps (also does not happen every time). I know the 3 beeps often indicates a RAM issue, so I installed the software "memtest" and all my RAM passed. Also, when my computer goes to sleep by shutting the lid of the laptop, it frequently won't come out of sleep and the sleep mode light is stuck on. When it's stuck in sleep mode, the fans turn on and the battery starts running pretty hot. I've tried resetting the PRAM, NVRAM and SMC via this tutorial: http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_fix_mac_won%E2%80%99t_wake  . I'm unsure of what steps to take next, and if the problem is a software issue, logic board or RAM issue.

That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the forums for Toshiba USA. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region.

  • Is it safe to do Software Update? and to put it on Sleep mode?

I'm coming over from a Pro Tools background, and with PT they would say not to do software updates as it can cause bugs with Pro Tools, is this an issue with Logic? and also Digidesign would say not to manually put your computer to sleep while running pro tools cuz it'll cause glitches or errors.
i would think cuz its all comin from the same house (Apple) that everything should be all good, no worries. but i still have to ask.
    thanks

Don't assume that because it's all apple there will be no problems! A quick surf around this forum on the subject of software updates will be enough to assure you of that!
And I would never put the system to sleep whilst actually running a session - I have had problems with this in the past (disk too slow errors etc.) I have my energy saver settings set to "never" except for the screen saver...
Check with other users on this forum is my advice before installing any update at all - do a search first and if you can't find answers then ask, but just make sure you include as many details about your machine, setup, OS version etc. as possible.
If your system is working fine I wouldn't bother with the upgrades personally.

  • HP pavillion Elite HPE-541F ... system will not start and monitor keeps going into sleep mode

    Good Morning:
Having an issue with my Hp Pavilion Elite HPE-541F and Monitor HP2311x
Yesterday, thinking I was updating Java ... clicked on it and agreed to things being allowed on computer ... started adding icons to my desktop .... then pop ups kept coming up to register etc ... I assumed that something was wrong so I attempted to restore system to previous ... since then my system will not boot up ... will say "starting windows" and I can hear the fans working but thats it ... second part of the issue is that the monitor keeps going to sleep, so even if I try to restart the computer in "safe" mode or anything else monitor goes to sleep and there's nothing on the screen so don't know if anything is doing anything .... Very sorry I'm also not very tech savy with computers ... just trying to save time and money before I have to bring system to computer repair person .... Any help would be appreciated .... Thanks so very much

  • Airport crashes with Leopard after waking from Sleep mode

So I've always had airport issues (1st gen intel) and I was hoping Leopard might help, but now my airport shuts down every time the computer sleeps and it cannot be turned on. I have to shut down the comupter and turn it back on (restart doesn't work).
    Any ideas?

I spoke with Tech Support this morning. Apparently this is a known issue with Lion. I found it interesting that the rep insisted on saying that "it is the way Lion functions" instead of admitting that it is a GLITCH in the programming. He even said that it happens randomly and not on all computers and not all users experience this. That ought to tell you that it's a glitch.  Anyway, there is a "workaround" which is what you do to put a bandage on a persistent wound that should really get surgically stitched:
You either have to log out every time you leave the laptop, or you have to change Energy saver preference to set the display to go to sleep AFTER the computer is set to log out (in Security preferences).
Here is the article that instructs us on applying the bandage::
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4135?viewlocale=en_US
Suffice it to say that Apple does not plan on stitching this one up any time soon..

Well I cannot offer any suggestion as to a fix, but FYI your video card has been in the news quite a bit the last few weeks. Heres an example:

  • Leopard 10.5.2 Sleep issue...

Recently, after upgrading to 10.5.2, I noticed that my G5 "Ambient Light Sensor" iMac would appear to sleep but that the light in the lower right of the front bezel would be lit continuously, whereas before it would cycle thru being bright then dim. This 'cycling' stopped with the installation of 10.5.2 and until now I thought this was a software bug.
Ok, so I thought it was a bug until a minute ago when I came into my computer room and the lights were turned off. I noticed that when I turned the lights on the light on the bezel went from kind of dim to some what bright. I went over to the light switch on the wall and turned the light off again and the light on the bezel went dim. I even put my hand up to the light sensor on the bottom front of the bezel and played around with making the bezel light bright and dim to confirm what was actually happening.
Apparently the Bezel light is responding to the 'Ambient Light Sensor' while in an automatic power saving induced sleep! (As others have stated in the forums, it doesn't seem to do this when I do a manual sleep from the Apple menu item in the menu bar, and appears to work as it did pre 10.5.2.) But it is still a problem since I can hear the fans and Hard Drive when it is apparently in 'automatic power saving sleep' mode.
Can anyone from on the Mac OS X Dev team tell me if this is supposed to be a feature, or if it is actually a software bug?! (And should I open a problem ticket with Apple Support for it?)
    Thanks

I haven't found anything in Darwin. And it appears now this might be a hardware issue - with a newly installed SATA HD.
About the time the Leopard came out, I upgraded my G5 iMac from a 250GB HD to a 750GB HD. The old original drive was a Maxtor, the new drive a Seagate. Since Maxtor is no more, and Seagate is supporting the last lines of Maxtor drives, I figured it was the best choice (I could have gone with a WesternDigital which would have been cheeper).
Anyway, I reinstalled my Maxtor 250GB drive, which had Tiger installed, and with the Display sleeptime of 1 minute, and the System sleep time of 2 minutes (screen saver was disabled), the bezel light would stay on and react to ambient light for about 2.25 minutes. It would then start to cycle thru bright and dim, and at the same time you could hear the fans and HD power down.
I tried a similar experiment using my external WesternDigital "My Book", 500GB drive, connected via FireWire400. It too had Tiger installed, but the system would never sleep - even after 10 minutes. (Small wonder when you consider it is connected externally.)
I also wanted to mention that I tried resetting PRAM and the SMU without any obvious changes.
So, at this point I am just giving in to the fact that I have to specifically tell the system to sleep via the Apple menu, or shut down altogether. I will keep looking into this, but won't be using as much time as I have been.
Oh, and I found that the bezel light is supposed to react to the 'Ambient Light Sensor', and ambient lighting, when the system is in sleep mode - but in all cases I have seen and experienced, it should only do this between the time the display goes to sleep, and the point where the system shuts the fans and HD down and goes into low power sleep mode. At that point the bezel light should cycle bright and dim, and the brightness should be in relation to the ambient lighting.
Best of luck to anyone else with this or similar issues.
