10.5.2 Update stalls during writing package reciepts

The 10.5.2 Update stalled (Froze) writing package receipts. I ended up doing a hard restart. It restarted, rebooted a second time & I got to the Desktop. Apple Menu/About this Mac says I have 10.5.2. System Preferences/Software Update/Installed Updates does not show the update. Only the iLife Support 8.2. I cloned the 10.5.1 System with SuperDuper just prior to the update. Should I clone back my previous system & try the update again or is there something else I should try first.

Ended up moving my cloned backup, back over to my Mac HD and running all the updates from the Apple download page instead of Software Update. They all went smoothly.

• IOS Update stalled during install...should I reboot?

Doing a required update to the software on my mac mini (so I could then update the ios on my iphone4s)  seems that the update stalled during the 'installing files' step.  Should I power off and try again?  Help...

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

• PowerBook G4 update stuck at 'Writing Package Receipt'

Its been over an hour now, but the progress bar is stuck at 'Installing 4 items: Writing Package Receipt'. Any suggestions? Thanks

I called AppleCare.
I was instructed to turn my computer off, disconnect peripherals and restart my computer. It had some problems restarting. When I finally had a desktop I had a dock, but no menu bar across the top and had the spinning beach ball of death. I was told to open system preferences software updates and check to see if the OS 10.5.2 update was in installed updates. It was not. We then checked about this Mac and the OS version was still 10.5.1. Then I went to Mac HD, Library, receipts, boms, I was told to locate com.apple.pkg.update OS 10.5.2. it was missing.
I then manually downloaded 10.5.2 combo update from the apple support web page.
I quit Safari and installed this update. I restarted the computer. I originally got the grey screen it tried to boot then it blanked restarted and booted. I repaired permissions and everything seems to be working.
I hope it works for you to.

We bought CS3 premium a couple months ago and have tried to use the auto update from Adobe. Unfortunately after downloading the new version of RAW the updater hangs up and never completes. It is the only CS app that does this.

Adobe Updater is a piece of ****. It only works when you are the first user created on the system and it does not work when filevault is enabled. Amazing how they can get that program so crappy. It is hard to do this wrong. Just download directly and apply the updaters by hand.

• Writing Package Receipt fails with 10.5 Leopard

I have tried to download the Jade plug-in for Aperture from the Apple site & from the Datamind.biz website, using SpeeDownload 5. When I try to install it it goes through the process until it stalls at Writing Package Receipt. Does anyone know a way round this? It has happened with another unrelated software package, as well?

Thanks for the advice but I only every run the stand alone combo updaters. I also know this download of the updater is solid as I originally used it to upgrade a test server which was another Mac mini and that went without a hitch.

• My Apple TV stalled during an update and now just shows an image of it being plugged into a USB. It won't complete the update and does nothing when I plug it into my Mac via USB.

2 Apple TVs. The first won't reboot, it stalled during an update and now shows a picture of a UBS plug. Ive tried to plug into my computer, nothing happens. At a standtill.
The second Apple TV works but only if I send something via Airplay. The remote no longer has any affect. The light on the front of the Apple TV blinks when I push a buttom on the remote but nothing happens.
Any Ideas? I am starting to think I need to replace them. Thanks.

Ok, with itunes open on the pc, plug one end of the usb cord into the computer, but not connected to the ipad.
now, press the power button on the ipad until it turns off.
Then, press and hold the home button on the ipad at the same you plug the usb cord into the ipad. DON'T LET GO OF THE HOME BUTTON.
Keep holding the home button until you see the recovery mode message pop on the itunes window.
When that happens, you should now be able to restore.

Have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear and it should reboot.

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Really slow install and 10.5.1 got stuck on "Writing package receipts"

I installed a fresh install on my ibook G4 way back but forgot to ask about this issue I had with installing. The install was incredibly slow and when I took a peek at the installation log, I noticed these sort of entries there:
Oct 26 07:50:44 ibookg4 root[2248]: Begin script: aclmodify.pl
Oct 26 07:50:44 ibookg4 /Volumes/OS X/private/tmp/scripts.61Db/./postinstall[2232]: No receipt for 'com.apple.pkg.OSInstall' found at '/Volumes/OS X'.
Oct 26 07:50:44 ibookg4 /Volumes/OS X/private/tmp/scripts.61Db/./postinstall[2232]: No receipt for 'com.apple.pkg.OSInstall' found at '/Volumes/OS X'.
Oct 26 07:50:45 ibookg4 /Volumes/OS X/private/tmp/scripts.61Db/./postinstall[2232]: No receipt for 'com.apple.pkg.OSInstall' found at '/Volumes/OS X'.
Oct 26 07:50:45 ibookg4 /Volumes/OS X/private/tmp/scripts.61Db/./postinstall[2232]: /Volumes/OS X/System/Library/User Template/Dutch.lproj
Now that I started to upgrade my system to 10.5.1 the system rebooted and started the install and got stuck at "Writing package receipt" and I left it running over night and in the morning I had had enough of waiting and just pushed the power button until the system turned off. I then turned it back on and it rebooted a couple of times and after that I got my system to a login screen and after login I checked what "About this Mac" said on my system and it claimed it to be OS X 10.5.1.
I whonder if it went through okay or not?
Could this problem have something to do with what happened during 10.5 installation?

I updated my wife's G4 iBook to 10.5 and 10.5.1 without incident. That said, I have ad other incidents where an install appeared to hang but worked fine after that.
My guess is that if your system is working normally and the About This Mac shows 10.5.1, then the upgrade was OK. Did you do the smaller (39MB) install from Software Update? If so, it is recommended that you download the full 110MB Update from the Apple site and reapply it to your machine.
You stated originally that you did a "fresh" install of Leopard. If you haven't done much else and have no data on your machine, it might be worth the effort to reformat the iBook drive and do another fresh install just to be sure there is nothing lurking in the background.
The install should only take about 2 -2.5 hours to do.
Hope this helps.
David

You are right. There are a lot more self-support tools available in Windows
than in MacOS. All you ever get on a Mac is "That didn't work: -304998173".

The upgrade is not the 11.0.06, but that is an update. The upgrade is what
you can purchase if you had a previous version of Acrobat (at least AA 9).
The upgrade is substantially less in price than the full product. With the
upgrade you also have to have the SN of the previous product available for
the install. That is why I asked about the upgrade. Once you install AA XI,
then going to 11.0.06 is a free update (updates are changes in the
sub-version and are done quarterly or when there is a critical security
issue).  You can often fix installations by running a repair. In Windows
that is done either from Help>Repair or from the Control Panel. I do not
know the equivalent of the Control panel in the MAC. In any case I am glad
you got it fixed.
