10.5.3 can't turn off my mac and programs get stuck

I've installed the latest OS X Leopard update (10.5.3) and since then I'm having serious problems with my Macbook Pro. The iMac of my girlfriend has the update as well but everything is working fine there.
Problem 1: Can't turn off my mac
When I want to turn off my mac I end up with my background and a little spinning wheel. This goes on forever, it seems my mac gets stuck at that point.
Problem 2: Programs get stuck
Since 10.5.3 programs get stuck much faster and when they do Force Quit doesn't work anymore. The program gets stuck and restarting the program can't be done.
Affected programs: Mail, Safari, Camino, NewsFire, Dock
Does anyone has the same problems or does anyone knows what's going on?
My Macbook Pro:
MacBook Pro 15"
Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz
2 GB RAM

HI Guust - yeah having a similar problem with an application freezing, although it is just Photoshop CS2 and I can force quite after 2 goes though!! I hope you get a result from this forum - I have been a mac user for 12 years plus and yes there were always problems with updates but never quite as dramatic as this and there were normally fairly easy solutions!
GOOD LUCK!

Thank you for all of your answer.

I've seen it mentioned on here that a PRAM reset may solve it:
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • HT201150 How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?

How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?
With the position of the power button on the Retina MacBooks, any mistake turns off the screen in the middle of a presentation or any activity using a projector or big screen — a huge waste of time to wake up the display, enter password, have the projector sync back, watch audience disconnecting from what was being discussed, etc.
This is very annoying, and seems to add to the increasing collection of options Apple decided to make by itself instead of allowing the user to choose.
Come on Apple guys, I'm using my Mac because I want options and lots of preferences to tweak to my needs.
If I needed the lobotomized version I'd be using my iPad!
Any way (official or hack) to change this button back to its proper funcionality?
    Thanks!

Not what you want, but you can get the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by holding the power button

What kind of videos are you watching?
You need to force quit Safari, but hitting Command-option-esc, and force quit Safari.

Can you turn off apple tv and just watch your regular tv?

I have an LG TV - I am still trying to work thru all this but on mine, I select TV on the TV remote and it takes me back to cable. Then when I want to return to Apple TV, I select INPUT on the remote and then HDMI. Took me right back to Apple TV.
(But I had already configured the TV for an external HDMI device during set up.)

    Hey peselvam,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
I would suggest to do a clean reload of the device software as shown here: http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11320, please test before restoring any backup data to the device.
    I hope this helps.

  • I can't turn off full-screen, and pressing F11 doesn't work.

I can't turn off full-screen mode, and hittng F11 doesn't work. Is there another way of turning it off?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Can you turn off phone calls and texts??

I am traveling to Buenos Aires from the United States for a minimester.. I called my cellular carrier and they do not have a plan to save me money in regards to phone calls and texts. I have the app What'sApp so I can use a data plan they offered me to keep in contact while I am way, however I am still afraid of racking up charges in texts and phone calls. Is there any possible way to turn off phone calls and text and strictly use the data plan they have given me?
I have the iPhone 5. Thank you.

FYI, that won't work. AirPlane disables all radio communications.
The best way to do this is to divert all calls.
    Go to Settings
    Phone
call forwarding and switch to O
Type in your carriers default voicemail number. Because it is the default number for voicemail is an exception in their list you won't be charged for the diversion.
remember to switch this off when you get back.
Then go to messages turn off send as SMS and MMS.
That should avoid most of the charges. Its inevitable that you'll get some but hopefully if you're careful it will be minimal.
Have you thought of using a local sim while you're there, you're iMessage will still work and your home SIM and account will be inactive so you won't get any unforseen chardges?
    Good luck

  • Can you turn off the Yellow and Black cursor pop ups?

Since 10.4.x I have noticed that these little pop ups that you get when the cursor is over something that has info are more frequent and are getting in the way. I love the idea but, they either don't pop up when I need them, don't stay up long enough to read large areas of text, or get in the way of moving a URL to a menu bar of my browser and I have to wait for it to go away before the address will copy.
I think I saw something somewhere about this but can't remember. It there a way to turn these off?
    TIA

    Hi
The term I think you're looking for is "tooltips". It seems that there is no obvious way of universally turning them off. An application's developer decides how they are implemented for the indiviual application. I notice that in Opera, my browser of choice, I can just turn them off in the preferences. The same does not apply for Safari and, by the looks of it, most Apple applications including the Finder. See the discussion Disabling "tooltips" in Safari...... for a little more info.

  • Can I turn off iCloud backup and keep my old backup?

Basically I am sick of being asked for money for more storage space. I cannot seem to get my iPhone backup under the 5gb free space, so the only option I see is to turn off iCloud backup. Can I do this without deleting the old (original) backup?

No.  When you turn it off it removes your existing backup.  You'll have to back up to your computer using iTunes (after turning off iCloud backup it will automatically back up when you sync).
