10.5.3: Incoming mail sound STILL NOT fixed.

So, in order to make this a question, anyone knows a fix? Please...not the one with writing an Apple script, something other if possible.
Thx

K9Lover: We must start to assume it's a feature not a bug then?
Well Monty thanks for your input I have no other third party app besides "Little Snitch" running, I have a PB G4 and a brand New iMac - same issue on both machines.
You might have never heard about it, but if you would read through this forum, there's a couple of threads about this. Here we go:

Well, these are just the ones that I found doing a quick look through the posts.
Apple is also aware of the problem for some time. I recall longer threads about this. People started the rather "Windoish" fix of writing an Apple script for it.
So anyway, let's leave ignorance aside, pretend that there are more users having the problem and get to work:
I got the idea that this might only apply for people using pop accounts, can anyone confirm?
I thought about switching to Imap just for the sake of getting the sound back, but then again...no!
As I said besides LS I have no other third party apps installed.
I might have to do a "Clean install" (Uh, the magic word, I hope the "there's no clean install" Possee won't notice!
Cheers all.

  • Incoming mail sound does not sound- is activated in preferences

Started after taking headphone jack out of back of Mac. iTunes plays, can hear sounds from Second Life, MSN Messenger, but incoming/outgoing sounds in Mail and iChat are gone. Activated/enabled in preferences in each app but don't play for incoming mail/im's. What to do, what to do?
    Thanks in advance.

The same thing is going on with my mail sounds and my Trash sounds.
Instead of restarting - try to Relaunch the finder first.

Just installed 10.5.2 and the issue that discussed in this locked thread has still not been resolved.

Just to add my empathys .... every day I dream longingly of the good old Tiger days when my computer just worked and I could feel the joy of having abandoned Microsoft years ago. Now that I run what is clearly Microsoft Leopard (hey, Apple had to get someone to bang together an operating system while they were busy drooling over their own iPhone and all the $$$$ it has created, and this cat has MS pawprints all over it) Im beginning to wonder whether its time to move to Linux.

  • New mail sounds iphone5 not working

Doesn anyone know why the sounds for New Mail do not work?  Only vibrate works. Thanks.

For some strange reason, my mail sounds are not
operating. I have a certain sound selected to
announce incoming mail, but as of today, it doesn't
ring. Nor do I get my "No Mail" sound. When I go to
System preferences>Sound, none of the sounds play
when I click them. Other sounds (iTunes, voices,
    etc.) work OK.
Does anyone have an idea as to how to fix this? Maybe
    deleting mail .plists?
    Thanks.
If the sounds don't play in the Sound Preference pane then deleting mail.plist won't matter.
Check in /System/Library/Sounds. Do the .aiff files open and play in QT when you double-click them there? If not you'll need to run repair disk from disk utility and if they still don't work after that you'll want to see if you can replace them.
If they do work, then try pulling the following to the desktop and logging out and back in:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
~/Library/Preferences/By Host/com.apple.systempreferences.XXX.plist (where XXX is a random string)

  • Setting incoming mail sounds

    Good morning.
I have 3 email accounts set up via my mac mail. I wanted to assign a different sound to each to alert me when mail arrives.
I quickly realized the general settings in preferences for incoming mail sound is a global setting, not adjustable per account. So I created three rules: when to matches *this email address* play *this sound*.
That seems to work EXCEPT that the general setting *New Mail Sound* also occurs. If I set New Mail Sound to None in the General settings, all new mail sound is shut off--including the specific sounds I set in Rules.
Anyone know how to turn off the global new mail sound yet still hear the specific new mail sounds per different email accts?
    Thanks for your help.

Open Mail preferences, click on the Accounts icon in the toolbar, click on the Advanced tab, uncheck the box labeled IDLE and see if that fixes things.

  • INCOMING MAIL SOUNDS DELAYED 2-3 MINUTES

I am not receiving an INSTANTANEOUS incoming mail sound alert as I have the entire time I've owned the computer. Instead, it sound alerts me 2-3 minutes after the mail is laying in the box. I NEED the instantaneous alert for my competitive business. I was 10.4.11, then performed a clean installation of Snow Leopard.
BTW, I first upgraded to Snow Leopard and had a variety of glitches. Then, I started from scratch installing a clean install. Snow Leopard is fantastic.
HOWEVER - I need to fix this one glitch. Any ideas?

Same here... but with a twist.
Very weird. I have Mail.app set to play "new mail sound" as well as other mail-even sounds.
I have some rules that route some mail to another folder (mail box). When mail comes for those, I get the sound. But for mail that stays in the inbox, no sound. The in-box is an IMAP box while the others are "local." I used to get the sound on Tiger on my old Mini.
When mail comes into in-box it is "bold" (no-read) which is correct.
I have "dock count" set for in-box only. Works fine.
I get the "woosh" when sending mail.
I've tried setting mail preferences for "play sounds" to other sounds. Same thing.
I've tried it with the mail.app showing and with it hidden. Same thing.
I've tried closing and opening mail. I've tried re-booting. Still no sound for "in-box" mail that is not "routed" to another mail box.
This is a brand new iMac with SL. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on. Maybe there is a setting I missed somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Al

  • No incoming mail sound

10.5.6 always had an incoming mail sound, and since updating to 10.5.7 no sound. The preferences still show the sound. What gives?

    Bruce,
Not sure about Mail Badger, but even in 10.5.6, the use of IDLE, at least with MobileMe, was known to inhibit the New Mail Alert -- this allows push mail, but impacts the sound.

  • Is the another way to mute incoming mail sound?

My new iPad Air has an annoying issue that I can't seem to solve.
I'm not a new user, this is my 3rd iPad.
What happens is that I have put the incoming mail sound to none in the settings. But still the incoming mail sound can be heard.
If I mute the Ring and Alerts sound, it stops. But that is annoying because now I can't hear my alarm or my keyboard clicks or applications within apps, like for instance a video on Facebook or Google+ doesn't have sound either and neither do some games? But if I un-mute it there is the annoying mail sound again.
I want to use my alarm but it's hard to sleep with a incoming mail sound going the whole night.
My slide button on the side is set to lock rotation and the bell is muted in the control panel.
I tried switching those but that doesn't make a difference.
    I have 2 mail accounts, a me.com and a gmail account.
I tried removing the gmail account, thought that might be the problem but it isn't.
I rebooted but the issue us still there.
Any of you have an idea what is causing my mail sound?
    Thanks,
    Christine

  • Cannot turn off incoming mail sounds

I am running 10.8.1 on a new retina macbook.
I have tried every preference panel I can find and nothing seems to be able to turn off the incoming mail sound.
I am getting what I think is the "Basso" sound whenever a new mail message comes in.
I went to Mail Preferences and picked New Messages Sound>None.
Then I unchecked Play sounds for other mail actions
Still get the basso sound when new mail comes in.
I even rebooted to see if that would fix it.  No luck.
Then I went and tried to change the sound to something else.  That didn't work either.  Stuck on basso!
Even checked Notifications Center and the Sound Preferences Panel.  No luck there either.
I don't want to turn off sound entirely, just stop incoming mail sounds.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
    thanks

Hi Mikibee...  Try this:  Mail / Preferences setting, from this window you will see (new message sound), set it to " none". Let me know if it worked for you.
                                                                                              Thanks.

  • I have a new Mac and mail is showing thousands of incoming mails that do not show up on the computer.  does anyone know what is going on?

I purchased a Mac OS x 10.9 in December. When using Mac Mail i get thousands of incoming mails that do not show up on my computer.  Does anyone have any idea what is going on?  this sure never happened on my old mac. i have three email accounts.  gmail, verizon and hotmail.

I posted the same question a day ago with no response. I'm using an Acer x193w. You actually don't have to switch monitors to get it to work. Just make sure you turn off the monitor after shutting down the Mac mini (actually push the power button on the monitor, not just let it go to sleep). If you turn on the monitor (push the power button on the monitor), then power up the Mac mini, the monitor is recognized. The issue didnt exist with Snow Leopard for me. It only started after I started using Lion. Hope this issue gets fixed In a future OS update.

  • HT1430 INCOMING MAIL SOUND

I HAVE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO CHANGE MY INCOMING MAIL SOUND TO ANOTHER SOUND BUT ORIGINAL SELECTION KEEPS RECURRING....ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Just to check, is this where you changed the sound?
Settings > Sounds > New Mail
You selected a new sound or different sound yet your New Mail sound didn't change when you received new mail.
First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. Then attempt to change the sound again.

If you select one month for mail days to sync, only one month's worth will be synced and available - the last month which will be constantly changing to the most recent 30 days. Select No Limit for Mail Days to Sync.
Show 1000 recent messages is for the selected mailbox only and if there are more than 1000 messages in a mailbox and you have one month for mail days to sync selected, if the last 30 days for the mailbox includes 100 messages, only 100 messages will be available.
Are these additional server stored mailboxes separate mailboxes and what I mean by that is not sub-mailboxes for the Inbox mailbox?
Since you have had this issue with other operating systems, the common denominator is your Hotmail account. Have you contacted Hotmail technical support regarding this issue you have had with other operating systems?
All server stored mailboxes with an Exchange account should be available with the email client used to access the account. If all are not available when accessing the account as an Exchange account with an email client, something is wrong with your setup for these mailboxes at the server level.
