10.5.3 on imac G5 deep sleep, won't shut down, fan runs hard

I updated to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2 on my 17" early iMac G5 and left for the weekend. When I got home, the fan on the computer was loud and the computer wouldn't wake up. I had to use the shut down button. Later, I left for a couple of hours, came back, fan loud, deep sleep, and the shut down button wouldn't work so I unplugged the computer. This happened again this evening. Checked software update and there is nothing new there.

Consider your iMac is almost dead. My first iMac was a G5 and it did not took to long till the fans got louder and louder. It was still in warranty and I took it to Apple Service. They replaced the mainboard.
Hope this info is of help!

iMac G5 ( not under any recall programs and no bloated capacitors )
will not come out of deep sleep and the fans start to rev up after 1 min and
    stay revved up on hi.
    Tried all possible solutions:
Via keyboard : Reset pram + Open firmware
Reset SMU via power cord and the internal smu button.
    Sleep light firmware is installed
Reinstalled 10.4.0 and went to 10.4.7
Tried to scare him with a glass of water, still nothing.
With iStat all temps a cool.
External fan on the PSU to keep it cooler.
Forced the iMac to have the fans on hi by booting in single user mode.
Rebooted. Fans still on hi. logged on then let it go to sleep on its own.
Monitor set at 1 min and HD at 5.
Monitor went to sleep but not the HD.
Forced deep sleep and it worked.
    But Same symptoms on wakeup.
    Removed the cover:
From a cold power up to video display all 3 led's light up.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283
    Deep sleep:
Leds 1 and 2 stay on, led 3 shuts off, normal .
    Wake from sleep:
Led 1 and 2 are still on.
Led 3 lights up for a fraction of a second and does not come back on.
Checks the disk drive then spins down ( when a disk is present )
Checks the HD then spins down.
1 min later the fans start revving on hi.
    Force reboot is required.
Symptoms started after 10.4.8 update. ( Yes I know about unsanity docks )
Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. I wait until that fat lady sings.
Please keep this post to the specific symptoms and to PPC G5 imacs.
Has any one ( iMacs G5) with these symptoms been cured?.
How can you uninstall the sleep light firmware patch to reinstall it?
I know that it stops the fans from revving.
    Any known Open firmware manual?
PM B&W G4 1Ghz Sonnet :: And still strong   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   If it aint broke, tweak it. If it breaks then fix it and tweak it again.

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!

I think I finished installing Mountain Lion, and am at the "log in" page with the Mountain Lion icon, but I cannot do any of the functions on screen. That is, I cannot log in, sleep, restart, or shut down. I am running it on an Early 2009 Macbook Pro, which is said to have the capabilities of running Mountain Lion.

...Is there any way I can install a partition that runs snow leopard on my early 2011 MB pro with what I have (new SSD, New RAM, Current version Lion running, no external drive, lack of original snow leopard disks [I lost them ] and the general 10.6.3 snow leopard boot disks)...
As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

  • Imac running 10.7.3 won't shut down

    Hi,
I have a new imac 3.4ghz - i7 with 16gbs ram that won't shut down unless I hold in the power button. Any idea what may be causing the issue. I checked the Console logs but that did not give me any indication of what might be hanging it up. I also, have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 and it has no trouble powering down.
I am running AVID Symphony which is not qualified for 10.7.4 yet so I am not going to do the update yet.

    Hi, mende1 -
I have the same iMac and am having a similar problem as SubSocitey.  Below is the Kernel Panic message that was generated. Do you think I have the same hardware problem?  If so, how can you tell?
    Thanks -
    Doug

  • IMac (Late 2008) (8,1) (20") Shuts Down Unexpectedly

    Hello everyone, here's my problem:
Every know and then my iMac (Late 2008) 8,1 20" shuts down unexpectedly, more than once. And usually happens when I'm stressing the computer by clicking on things or just at random times. The computer however seems to be hot on top when it does shut down. When the computer shuts down it then turns back on after about 10 seconds. I've called Apple they had me reset the PRAM this worked but then after a few weeks the problem had begun again. I don't want to take it into the Apple store just yet because I really need my iMac right now and I want to know if there are any other options I have to fix this besides taking the iMac into an Apple store. Also could it be that I have to little RAM? I only have 1 GB or ram and my bus speed is: 1.07 GHz, Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz. Oh and I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.4).
Hope you can can figure out whats wrong or what might be causing this problem. Also if you have any questions or need more info to solve the problem, just feel free to ask and I will answer them.

Check out this thread and see if it pertains to your problem.

  • A rectangle box with four options, Restart,Sleep,Cancel and Shut Down appears some times when I boot up, how can I stop this from happening?

A rectangle box come up sometimes when I boot up my computer, it says, Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now? and has four boxes Restart, Sleep,Cancel and Shut Down. How can I get rid of this annoying occurance?

That box is normally invoked with Control-Eject.

  • IMac won't shut down after using Time Machine

Here is the thing: My iMac (late 2009, 24", 8 GB RAM) won't shut down when I use my external HD for Time Machine. After the back up I try to eject the external HD but the icon won't disappear on the screen, it only gets blank and is not clickable anymore. It is still visible in the menu of the Finder but with no ejection sign anymore. Programs that were open before won't close even if I use the forced shut down function. But it seems like they are closed as they don't appear on the list anymore. When I then try to shut down the whole system the screen goes black and the wheel turns for hours! So that I finally have to shut it down manually.
This happens only after using the external HD for the back ups and when I then try to eject it. If I don't eject it everything goes normal. If I don't connect it everything goes normal. Sure, you might say, hey leave it plugged in then. But as it is a 3 TB HD I also use it for my MBP so I have to eject it
Is this a known issue or a bug in the system of Yosemite? With Mavericks everything worked really well - no problems at all. On the MBP (late 2011, i7, 8 GB RAM) it also works well. So I am kind of annoyed the I always have to shut the iMac down manually which can't be that healthy for the system.
Any insights on that issue are highly appreciated - thanks a lot!
    Birgit

Okay, just realized that the same problem occurs with the MBP after rejecting the external HD
Icon gets blank, cannot be clicked anymore, while shutting down the MBP normally the screen goes black and the wheel is turning forever but nothing else happens. So I have to force it to shut down.
It seems to be a general problem with connecting an external HD once in a while for doing a time machine back up regularly and then eject it. So the question is: who has the same problem or does everybody have their HD permanently connected to their Macs for Back ups? Either by USB or WLAN? It never was a problem wit Mavericks and I don't want to permanently back up my system every hour - once a week is good for me BUT this cannot be adjusted in the time machine settings which would be a very good idea.
Any solution is still highly appreciated !!
    Thanks a lot,
    Birgit

My laptop was working great before the upgrade and before upgrading i updraded ( updated ) all the drivers and windows too.          so, after the upgrade i have been facing the same problem which has been shared by many peple here..i.e win doesn't go to sleep mode. In my case when ever i put the sys to sleep mode, the screen turns off but the power button doesn't blinks and i can't go back to the normal mode by using mouse curser or pressing the power button back. I have to physically shut down the system by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.         Also, my system won't shut down properly and it is the same as the sleep mode probem. I have contacted the customer care of microsoft and hp both and they did some setting changes but the problem keeps coming back. I have also told by the hp care that they will take atleast a month or two to fix this as this may be due to hardware not supporting the current driver so this might take time. They also told me to just downgrade to win 8.1 and after sometime when this poblem is fixed i can again install and upgrade win 10. If any of you guys know how to fix this problem do share it here.      thanks!!

    Hi ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 15 p017tu Notebook and issues with the sleep mode and shut down not working correctly. Go into the Device Manger and go to display adapters. Update the driver. Select the Automatically search for updated drivers.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating after Windows 10 upgrades . I hope this helps. Thanks.

  • My iMac won't shut down.

My iMAC won't shut down.  I get a gray screen with the spin wheel and simply stays in that mode forever until I hold the on/off button down long enough to kill the machine.  What's up with that?

  • IMac won't shut down or go to sleep - keeps rebooting or turning display back on. Is there any way to fix this?

A friend's iMac (2010 - Snow Lepord - 27" display) won't allow them to shut it down or put it into sleep mode. The system continually reboots itself when using the Apple > "Shut Down..." command.  Similarly, it continually turns the display back on when using the Apple > "Sleep" command (even when no additional movement or action has taken place).
The only way to turn this monster off is to press and hold the power button behind the screen (lower-left).  Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening and how to fix it?
    Many thanks in advance!

Have you tried an SMC reset?
