10.5.3 Update Crashed Now no boot + clicking noise

There seems to be many similar problems to mine posted, but the solutions there aren't helping.
My software update crashed at 86%. I assume it was installing 10.5.3 but I didn't see that specified. Since then, I have not been able to get past the grey screen and the spinning gear. I've tried the following:
1) Hard restart and then booting into safe mode (holding shift).... no dice
2) Holding option after a hard restart and booting with the system disk. From there I ran the disk check. I got a "this drive is okay" (or something to that effect) but the disk utility wouldn't let me out. I had to foce quit the disk utility.
3) After another hard reset, I tried repairing disk permissions. It stalled a third of the way in. Had to do another hard reset.
*The scariest part is that when I see the grey screen (and also when I got stalls after 2 and 3 above), the macbook started softly clicking at me.*
Is the computer screwed or did Apple totally botch the 10.5.3 updater? Is my computer now caught in limbo, having had the updater crash?

I think your HD is bad. Downloading a large file such as 10.5.3 may show up a HD defect that downloading smaller files does not. Many times the "top" of our HD is not used and may be bad without us noticing anything. But when we download a large file which attempts to write over a bad area of the HD, we see a problem.
I would boot into your Leopard DVD and run DU from it, repairing both the HD and the permissions.
Any HD errors would indicate to me a need to replace the HD ASAP.
Be sure your backup is up to date.

  • New 2011 Imac out of box, updated software now wont boot up? Ive had this machine for 24 hours!

Brand new out of box Imac 27" Booted up ok. Downloaded/updated software and prompted restart and now no screen? Makes the boot up noise but screen remains black? Any ideas or others with similar problem? Very dissapointed in product considering Im replacing my older Imac of 3.5yrs (out of warranty) with faulty hard drive.

Unplug it. Wait 2 minutes (don't rush it). Plug it back in. Power it up. Have patience during the first startup.
If the computer hasn't booted to the desktop (or the login screen if you have auto login disabled) within 5 minutes, considering that it's brand-new-out-of-the-box, call Apple and schedule a repair appointment at your nearest Apple Store.
I know it's annoying that you might have a lemon, but it does happen - don't give up on Mac because you got the one bad Apple.

  • My 2012 MacBook Pro fell and it now makes a clicking noise and shows a grey screen on startup. I'm afraid the hard drive is damaged. Is their anyway to still back up my hard drive even if it doesn't turn on all the way?

So my late 2012 MacBook Pro was sitting on my desk when the desk collapsed. The computer fell with it and I was quite scared at the moment, but thankfully I opened it up and it worked perfectly fine again.
I was later watching a YouTube video and pressed the back button. The screen then froze, and I could not force quit safari. Then this weird clicking noise started to happen. It was coming from the right of the trackpad. That's when I decided to force shutdown the computer with the power button.
I let it sit and then decided to turn it back on. The clicking noise then came back and there was just a blank screen on the boot up. Eventually a grey folder with a question mark started flashing on the screen. That was all it did so I decided to turn it off again.
I'm going to take it into the Apple store ASAP, but I'm curious if my hard drive is damaged and if I will need a new one, which would erase everything on my Mac. So I was wondering if there is anyway to back up the hard driver even if it doesn't boot up all the way, or turn on the computer all the way.
P.S. I have never backed up my hard drive so I wouldn't know what to do.

You may have damaged the HDD which is located in that spot. I would take it in for service.

  • SATELLITE A105-S4074 BIOS UPDATED AND NOW DONT BOOT!

    Hi,
I just have updated my old A105-S4074, with the lastest bios update available ACPI Flash BIOS version 6.00 for Tecra A7 (Intel) (PTA70U) and now is not even showing the post screen to enter to the BIOS
I flashed it using the cdrom way, and everything worked fine and finish sucesfully, but just when it restarted i got black screen!
The fan start, cdrom, but no hd light... just that and no video.
I tryied removing battery and ac, presing the power button for 30 sec, etc, and is just not working.
    Any idea?
    Thanks you in advance!
    Regards

It's bad news that you may have corrupted your BIOS, even though you used the boot CD update method.
Regardless, you can try all these steps first:
    Computer will not turn on
If nothing above works, see these intructions, and try to work your way through them for your make of BIOS. The BIOS.ROM file they mention, should be on your BIOS update CD.
    BIOS Recovery procedures
    Good luck.

  • Itunes update crashed now wont work

I choose to update itunes a few days ago and it got pretty close to being done and then stopped. I gave it a few hours to complete th update thinking maybe it was just slow due to lots of people using it. I clicked to cancel the update and it did not cancel it or put my icon back on the desktop.
now its all jacked up, i cant figure out how to repair itunes because i run it off an external hard drive.
i cant delete everything and reinstall itunes because it says im still updating...
    heeeelp

A warm welcome to the forums!
First, how much free space do you have on what size drive?
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, whch may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
More help if that doesn't work.

  • IPhoto 9.6, library update crashed, now cannot see photos

I am on a 2010 Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8gb memory and a 240 GB SSD. I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, and updated to iPhoto 9.6 at that time. I initially had trouble getting it to install, but did succeed. It then repeatedly stalled while trying to update my library. My iPhoto library is located on an external HD. Tonight, I tried again, and it seemed like things were going ok. While updating thumbnails, it said I was "out of memory". I closed all other programs except finder, and tried to resume iPhoto. Waited some time, no luck. Eventually had to force quit, and rebooted. I was then able to open iPhoto, and it defaulted to the correct library, but nothing shows up. The library is 33.2GB (which seems appropriate), so I suspect that everything is still there, it just isn't viewable by me.
I didn't seem to be able to repair using option+command while it was on the external HD, so I copied it to my local HD. I set the library to the local copy. I tried repairing permissions, thumbnails, database. Nothing seems to happen. I tried rebuilding database. Again, nothing.
How do I fix this? I do have the external HD, including the iPhoto library, backed up on Time Machine. I also have separate backups of most (but not all) of the images because I have trust issues and I don't like that my mac packages it all up into one little bundle that I could lose all at once, but I'd rather not have to go around digging for those if it's not necessary.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I downloaded Newest mozilla yesterday, adobe updated, and now when I click a YouTube video I get a box saying "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (rtsp) isn't associated with any program." and can't watch any videos?

I downloaded the latest version of Mozilla Firefox yesterday, full and complete, and I am actually using it right now. The only problem I have had is upon clicking any YouTube video, the box pops up saying "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (rtsp) isn't associated with any program." But there are no directions or suggestions on how to address this problem. Ive looked at YouTube add-ons and none of them really seem related. Upon the finish of the new Mozilla, I also was prompted to upgrade the flash player, and did so without any trouble. I am only guessing this is an extension/plug-in problem. I really am quite confused!

I was having the same problem and finally figured out how to change this bahavior.  Go to Safari preferences under the 'Tabs' settings.  Make sure the field "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" is set to NEVER.  That should do the trick.

  • Will the Apple Store give me a replacement iPhone 6 the one i have now has a clicking noise when you press on the screen. I have only had it for about 8 weeks is it a manufacterin fault or what.

My iPhone 6 has a clicking sound coming from the top left of the device as if its no aligned properly with the frame.
Ive only had it for about 2 months, the iphone its self is in pristine condition no bumps or scrapes, in fact i treat it
like a new born baby. Will the apple store give me a new replacement or i am wasting my time i have got a clue
never had this or any problem before with iPhone's before. Its not something you want having paid £620 i live
    in the UK.

If they determine the sound to be a manufacturing defect, then yes, they will replace your iPhone with a refurbished unit of identical specs. The replacement will have the same warranty as your original iPhone, for as long a time as what is left on your iPhone's warranty at the time of exchange.

  • Powerbook Spitting Leopard Disk Out After Boot, Clicking Noise also!!

Hi, i put the leopard installation disk into my powerbook and it makes this weird clicking noise but still can find the disc. I click on install and reboot my machine and then a grey screen comes up and the dvd drive starts clicking again and then spits the disc out! How can i fix this??
    Thanks Sam x

Is the Leopard disk a retail install disk like this:
    !http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/1500/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/ MB576AV1?wid=45&hei=40&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&opusm=0.5,0.5,0,0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp!
or the grey system disk from a newer Mac. A retail disk should read on any DVD drive; a system disk could be dual-layer and the only PowerBooks with a DL Superdrive were the last ones with Machine ID of PowerBook5,8 and 5,9. Also, a system disk for an Intel Mac will not install OSX at all on an older Mac with a PowerPC processor like the PowerBook.

After charging the iPod for half an hour, see if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow iTunes to see the iPod so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

My AppleTV (2nd gen) crashed last night with the latest update and now all I have a flashing light.  What to do? It showed a USB symbol point toward an iTunes symbol and won't reset after resetting with the remote.  Same thing.

usb symbol pointing toward an itunes symbol is apples way of trying to get you to connect the appletv to your computer running itunes so it can restore the apple tv's software
though it seems to be a connection few people make
