10.5.3 update disaster PowerBook G4

ok, normally i never have problems like this, and apparently no one else is having this one specifically. - -
- i hope someone can stomach my longwinded description of what happened enough to help. -
i updated to 10.5.3, rebooted fine. then i couldent mount my usb key, or any FAT32 formatted drive it would seem, cd-rw's wouldent mount either. getting fed up i rebooted, i have my machine set to verbose login, and amidst the booting process, i keep seeing 'Reportcrash[##]: Saved crashreport to etc etc.. all down the screen every few seconds, i let it boot all night in the hopes it would someday get finished booting, it dident. i was presented with a screen of reportcrash's and the os would not boot, only booting into safe boot it works, but not so well. -
- no i did not check permissions before i did this.
so, i reinstalled leopard, told it to grab my time machine backup of 10.5.2, did that. couldn't login. that another issue though (i think), so i reinstalled again w/o using my backup at first. used migration assistant to get my backup all on the machine, performed permission repairs once my original backup was up and running. - - ran software update once more, (it was a 10.5.0 disk so it thought it was at 10.5.0) when i ran software update it had a bunch of updates, including the 10.5.3 combo update. told it to update and it IMMEDIATELY asked me to reboot. - - now i know i couldn't have downloaded them that fast. but i obliged, rebooted, claimed to have installed things, came back and it was 10.5.3. - - same problems, it wanted nothing to do with mounting FAT32 volumes, and eventually i rebooted, just to see the same reportcrash errors over and over again... - - i could try various methods w/ my backup, or just forgo updating to 10.5.3 at all. anyone have some suggestions?

heres one of the several reportcrashes, i believe this one is from when it was booting.

  • Does an upgrade cure an update disaster?

I have an iMac my family uses running Snow Leopard and during the automatic Software Update installation of the 10.6.8 Update last year the Mac hung:
10.6.8 update crashed before it completed and now the Finder won't launch.
Fortunately for me, I had downloaded the 10.6.8 Combo Update separately because the iMac I use is not connected to the WWW. I was able to recover enough that my family is able to continue to use the iMac even though I know that it isn't as stable nor as fast as it was before the update hung.
I have purchased Lion but I have only used it to upgrade the iMac's flawed contents that I imaged onto a FW800 HDD. Lion runs faster on the external FW800 HDD and is more stable than Snow Leopard is running on the internal SATA HDD.
Did the upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.7 on the FW800 eliminate all the bad "juju" from the 10.6.8 update disaster (and I can now image it back to the internal HDD) or is there still a high probability that something is still lurking in 10.6.8?
    TIA.

    mende1,
While I would have agreed with you BEFORE I tried it, it seems that whatever is wrong with my 10.6.8 confiugration, upgrading it to 10.7 absolutely made the resulting OS much more faster (despite running from an FW800 external HDD) and stable than before the upgrade. And I don't question one iota that a clean install would eliminate all concerns of any leftover problems (only new ones).
However, there seems to be quite a bit of problems, I've read here and elsewhere, when doing a clean install and then using Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant using the 10.6 image, or Migration Assistant using Time Machine. So it seems that an upgrade avoids those issues with the various Assistants. What would you suggest if I did do a clean install?
BTW, where did you learn that 10.8 "will be launched next week" other than we're running out of July?

If you are talking about update OS X then you can't.
10.5.8 is the newest version of OS X that a G4 is capable of running.

  • 10.4.6 Update Caused Powerbook & eMac to stop booting up

Very strange problem. I installed 10.4.6 on two different computers at two different times. PowerBook G4 17" and emac G4. Soon thereafter the PowerBook started going into startup ****, that is the gray spinning timer would sit there for several HOURS and no bootup. So, I forced it to restart ---- bad move. The drive became unusable. TechTool reported MANY bad sectors. DiskWarrior managed to salvage the directory but cannot overwrite the existing bad directory so I am salvaging the files to an external hard disk. I tried dragging folders off the "virtual" repaired directory DiskWarrior made but almost every large file gave Errors so I ran Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the virtual repaired PowerBook directory over to the external drive. Carbon Copy Cloner is not a rocket and usually would take a few hours to copy my drive in the past for backups. Now the damage is so bad in 48 HOURS only 12GB has been copied, 60 more to go, so I have started using my PowerMac G4 with a backup of all my mail etc. and other items.
Separately, 2 days later, I installed the update on the eMac. It ran fine for a few hours. I did a normal shutdown. Next morning, it has the same gray spinner sitting on the front screen for 12 hours.... the hardware of the eMac is OK, since I was able to boot it off my previous PowerBook G3 500 in Target Disk mode... DiskWarrior rebuilt the directory on the eMac but still it is not going past the spinning wheel gray apple...
Two machines separate from each other both having startup failures after an update.... makes me wonder... could be bad luck, or coincidence... but just wanted to post here in case someone else has had problems and thought it was just their issue....
Let me know if you have some ideas on what may be the problem. Thanks/
    Imran

Hi Imaram, updates rarely cause problems. Rather, the problems are pre-existing and the update exacerbates them.
It sounds like you are completely backed up. I'd suggest zeroing out the disk with the bad sectors and re-installing and see if they return. If they do, you'll need to replace the disk. I'd do a zero out on the other disk also even though it is not reporting bad sectors yet.
Then, you can clone everyting back. I'd suggest trying SuperDuper this time.

  • I want to sync music from my PowerBook G4 to my Ipod Generation 7 but it says i need to update the Powerbook but the Powerbook says there is no updates plus i need to update Itunes but its not working.

I want to Sync music from my PowerBook 4 to my Ipod generation 7 but it says I need to update Itunes to 10.7 but when it finishes updating and i go back to itunes nothing has changed and Itunes is not updated.

In order to install iTunes 10.7 or later you need OSX 10.6.8 or later. A PowerBook can install up to OSX 10.5.8

Are you actually able to use the computer at all?
Do you have a second computer for use online, while you try and see if you can
    make this PowerBook G4 work?
If you could start the computer from the Panther install disc #1 (C-key held on start)
instead of installing anything, note in the Install window, at perhaps the second
screen in the desktop-like window appears with Installer in the header, you can look
into the menus; click on and see what drop-down menus have on them. If you can
find Utilities or Disk Utility, run that. See if you can get that far, and if that opens, the
Disk Utility's left side area will show Macintosh HD and also another item that is the
name of the company who made the hard disk drive that Mac HD is on. Choose
the name of the hard disk drive brand, (click once on it) then choose the option in
    Disk Utility, to Repair Disk.
There will be a report in the second box in Disk Utility if the utility can be used to
attempt a fix on the Mac HD. And if there is a repair report, and it says Repaired, go
ahead and run that same Repair Disk, again.
Then, choose (click on) the Macintosh HD name, & choose to Repair Disk Permissions
on that volume. When done, Quit Disk Utility, from the menu bar; and then look under
the Installer menu when that re-appears, and there look to find a Startup Disk or choice
to restart the computer from its hard drive.
When the computer is restarted and not running off the Panther installer disc#1, you can
see about using the built-in Disk Utility (see GO in finder) and the Utilities folder should be
there, select it, and go to Disk Utility, launch it and click on Mac HD, then choose 'repair
disk permissions' from this D.U. When it is done, quit Disk Utility.
If there is no problem, hardware failure, damaged hard disk drive, or too much stuff stored
on there, the computer may work better. If the drive is too full, then old user files have to go.
Does the failure of the Combo 10.3.9 update for
Panther occur in the downloading of it? Or after
the file is downloaded on the desktop?
Do you have a dialup internet connection, or how
do you go online with your computers? A slow
connection may take a long time or drop out if
you have dialup. An incomplete file may result.
If the Panther system won't work, and can't be updated, then the Tiger 10.4 installer disc may
be the only choice to continue to try and make that computer work. That is involved and does
require booting the computer from that disc.
And using Disk Utility in the Installer's menubar plus find its Options to erase the drive, and do
that; you can have the Utility secure overwrite one-pass zeros, and reformat to HFS+. Be sure
the name of the reformatted hard drive is the same as it was, Macintosh HD; and the kind of
format HFS+ and it says Apple Partition Map.
You can then quit the Disk Utility and with the Installer disc still running the computer, you
can run the Installer, to install the easy version of Tiger 10.4. At this point in time, the hard drive
would be erased, zeroed, reformatted & empty except for that reformat. And defragmented.
Ready for an all new install.
The Tiger retail disc does not contain iLife apps, and is just the main installation of 10.4; if this
path is taken, the older Panther apps and stuff would not be on the computer and the apps on
discs from Panther would not install into Tiger.
The use of a demo-trial run of Pacifist could be downloaded and used to extract applications
from the Panther installer discs that have apps. AppleWorks, iPhoto, & a few others may do OK.
So, since you bought the computer on ebay and had no way of knowing it would work (fully) or not
you are taking a chance again in trying to resolve issues as you've found them.
Sorry to hear of such a fate so close to the holiday and few if any options to resolve issues
of this level over this time of the year...
Sometimes, for the cost of a computer on ebay a selective person can find a better deal on one that
has been repaired and guaranteed; a few online companies do that for a living and have a good rep-
utation built up over years of providing service. Does the auction site offer recourse on this item?
    Best wishes & regards.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Java 6 or se 6 update for powerbook

first timer here is it possible to upgrade to java se6 or 1.6 on powerbook g4 im new to mac i bought it on ebay so im kinda interested on what i can do with it and could i also upgrade to a new software like 10.7.3

Try software update to see what java is available for you.

  • How can I update my PowerBook Pro from OS X 10.5.8?

I'd like to upgrade some of my software, but I need to upgrade my operating system first.  I have an 2.4 GHz Intel Dual Core 2 Processor,   2BG 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. and 21 GB free on my HD.  Do I need to update to 10.6, then 10.7, then 10.8 etc or can I directly update to OSX 10.8?

You have a MacBook Pro, not a PowerBook. You need to upgrade to 10.6 first (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard), but then you can upgrade to any later version you want. Here are the requirements for the latest OS versions (they're the same for 10.8, 10.9, 10.10): http://apple.com/osx/specs.
Mountain Lion (10.8) is available here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion. Mavericks (10.9) is no longer available, and once you have 10.6.8, you can download OS X Yosemite (10.10, the latest) from the Mac App Store. If your Mac isn't compatible, you can still download Lion (10.7): http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion.

  • Problem installing Mac OS X Update on PowerBook G4

I'm trying to install the Mac OS X Update Combined 10.5.5 on my PowerBook G4 but it can't open the installer package. It keeps saying the Bill of Materials was not found. Are there any answers to this please?
    Thanks,
    Colin

The System Requirements on the update page I already mentioned
    (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1055comboupdate.html) clearly state that
*Mac OS X 10.5.1 - Mac OS X 10.5.4* is required for this update.
Is it not obvious that 10.3.9 does not meet this requirement?
You must buy Leopard (an OS upgrade ) before you can update it.

  • Leopard 10.5.5 software update crashed powerbook, unable to solve reinstall

Powerbook 15" G4 running Leopard with software updates turned on. Update started but never completed. Mac won't restart, reaches apple logo and indicator and hangs permanently.
Follow support articles already tried the following fixes:
Unable to start mac in safeboot mode or verbose mode
Able to start mode in single user mode
    fsck reports no disk errors
    Checked no ApplicationEnhancer present.
Reset PMU and still can't restart
Reset PMU and PRAM and still can't restart
Tried to startup from OSx install diskette and startup reaches blue screen and coloured pin wheel but no further, so unable to archive and reinstall
Any suggestions what else to try?

yes yes, 5.1 problem! installed update for OS 5.0 to OS 5.1 and now Safari and Mail will not open.
I grabbed both apps from time machine as well and this 5.1 does not even like Safari and Mail from the 5.0.
and, repair disk permissions took forever, nothing resolved there. Do I make room on HD to re install Leopard 5.0?

  • Update Disaster. Graphics card problems.

    (yes, MORE problems!)
Ok I dont really think its a disaster but it sure fells like it.
My computer (G5 desktop OS 10.4.9, no intel) crashed and powed down during an update. Now nothing functions properly! I get this when it starts.
    Sysmquickmenu quit unexpectadly.
    and: archiveassistant quit unexpectadly.
AND: sh:line 1 command not found. Operation not permitted.
Also my itunes says its version 7.1.1 but the new features are not visable.
My graphics card seems to be glitching when i start up.
The screen color is very dark, i notice when i exit a Hi-Def game the color returns to normal. So when i start up i enter the game and then exit, to see properly.
By the way im using an Apple LCD Cinema Display

I also experienced problems with my graphics card after installing the latest update via the "software update" application. I have the standard GeForce FX 5200 installed in my Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz. After the update, the available resolutions listed in my "display preferences" were changed. Several additional resolutions were added, most of which were "interlaced." I normally run my display, a Sony Multiscan crt, at 1024 x 768. This was now only available as a "interlaced" option, which would not display properly on my monitor. I downloaded the 10.4.9 Combo Updater directly from the Apple web site. Once I ran the combo updater, it removed the "interlaced" options and restored my normal choices. Everything is now running smoothly. If anyone is having graphics card issues, I would give the combo updater a try.

  • Mac OS update kills Powerbook G4

Hi. I'm using a 15-inch Powerbook G4 and have had no problems whatsoever. Until today. I downloaded the latest OS upgrade and now the computer won't boot. I get the white screen with the Apple logo and nothing else.
Anyone else have this problem? How do I fix it?
    Thanks.

    Hi GothamPhotog,
I hope you were backed up before trying the upgrade; reverting to your earlier trouble-free state would be easiest. I haven't done any of this myself, but if you can boot to your Tiger install dvd, you could try the strategy in Igor Minar's blog. Seems to have worked for a lot of people. Note that you will have to adjust his Terminal commands to suit the name of your HD and version (PPC) of the updater. Finally, if it were me, I would use the Combo (163 MB) version of the updater.

  • Kernel Panic after Leopard update on Powerbook G4

I've updated my 15" Powerbook G4 to Leopard. Initially everything seemed ok (for about half an hour), but then I started to get Kernel Panics everytime my machine went to sleep.
It also sometimes didn't start up - I heard the start-up sound, but the screen stayed dark. After resetting the PRAM it would work again. I replaced the RAM, but the problem persisted.
I then thought it may be a hard disk problem, because when I booted from an external 10.5 or 10.4 disk, the problem was gone and my computer went to sleep without any problems.
So I ended up buying a new hard disk for my Powerbook, installed Leopard, and it indeed looked as if the problem was solved - for half a day. Because it re-occured after leaving my machine on overnight to allow spotlight to index the HD. The next morning, it wouldn't wake up from sleep mode (the white indicator light at the front also wasn't on), I restarted and the problem came back. Everytime my machine tries to go to sleep, or I put it to sleep, I get a kernel panic.
Any thoughts what this may be? I'd hate to have to go back to 10.4, but I also fear that it may be a hardware problem. Strange though that a replacement HD would fix it for a little while (or booting from an external HD).

    Hi Barry
Thank you for your help. You may give me too much credit for my hardware knowledge, though. I can replace RAM, but that's about it. Everything else is done by my hardware genius friend at work.
Nevertheless, I have now noticed that the problem seems to be specific for only one of my user accounts. Not surprisingly, the one I use most. None of my other accounts, including the admin account, are not affected. Wouldn't this argue against a hardware problem? Unless someone has a better idea, I may just have to delete this account and see if this will do the trick. Is there any way to painlessly migrate all the meat (keychain etc.) into a new account?
Thanks a bunch for any help.

  • 10.4.6 Update disaster

Since I updated to 10.4.6, my hard drive seems to have disappeared, and I can't see it in disk utility.
I tried disk Utility with my MacOS InstallCD : it sees my hard drive, but the volume is not mounted (and can't be !!!). Of course it can't be repaired.
I erased my hard drive, and I'm now trying to re install.
I had bought my DualG4 with Mac OS 10.2. (which comes with MacOS 9.2)
Then I bought Tiger last year.
I thought I had to reinstall 10.2 (because I need to have MacOS 9), so that's what I did ; but since, each time I try to boot, after a few seconds there's a message that says : "you need to restart your computer" !!!!
I'm fed up with Update problems (3 months ago, I had big FireWire troubles after an update).
    Can anybody help me ?

    Thanks for you answer !
Actually, I could boot into MacOS9 until the day I installed MacOS 10.4.6 Update.
After this update, I couldn't boot into Mac OS 9 anymore.
After this update, my hard drive did not appear in Disk Utility any longer.
So I decided to erase my hard drive and re-install everything.
I finally managed to re-install Mac OS 10.2 yesterday (with the Install CD that came with my G4).
Then I connected to the Internet, and I made all the updates (til Mac OS 10.2.8) ; everything seemed to be OK.
So I tried to install Mac OS X Tiger (the install CD I bought last year). The installation quits after 20 minutes, and there's a message that says there has been some errors during the installation, and I have to try again.
I tried to install Tiger 5 times (archive and install, or erase and install, etc...). The same thing happened.
My hard drive is formatted with HFS+ (extended and journalled). The 10.4 Disk Utiliyty says tha hard drive is OK.
    I'm beginning to... cry.
