10.5.4 Breaks Webcam Support

Before I updated to 10.5.4 last night, I had a Microsoft Xbox 360 Vision Camera hooked up and working with Leopard. It worked with Photo Booth and a number of webcam programs.
Now it doesn't even show up on the System Profiler. Is there any patch I can download to get it working again or will I have to restore my whole computer with my time machine backup from before the update?

Exactly how did you reset your PRAM? I'm having trouble getting my webcam to work using the internet. My Photo Booth works, cam works through Yahoo Messenger, also works with Skype with no problem. But if I try to broadcast myself through one of the online chathost websites, the cam won't send images through. Weird huh?
Anyway, you are the only one i've seen in any discussion group who actually fixed anything so i need to know how you reset your PRAM, thanks.

Hi;
I switched to the mac and i was wondering if anyone knows a program that will let me connect to Yahoo, MSN, and AOL at the same time and use multiple accounts. I also want webcam support. Currently i use different programs and i would like to be able to chat from one program instead of 3. SO far i have found aMSN, but only works for msn and not the other chat clients. Anyone can help?

It handles like 6 different IM clients.... not sure about the video capabilities, but i use iChat on an AIM client for that.

Added drag support breaks drop support

I have a Swing app (running on WIndows), which consists mainly of a Jtable with a list of files in it, one file per row. I wanted to be able to open files in the JTable using drag and drop, so Ive created a subclass of DropTarget and set it for my frame with setDropTarget() and it works fine, I can now drag and drop files from Windows Explorer. I set the drop target for the frame rather than the table because I wanted the user to be able to drop the files anywhere on the application.
I then wanted to add dragging files from the Jtable to other applications to be able to make copies of the file. So I setDragEnabled() on the table and setTransferHandler() on the table and created appropriate TransferHandler and Tranferable subclasses. Now I can can drag files from the table ok, but unfortunatelly I can no longer drop files onto the frame, it just shows the no-entry sign when I try to. I don't see why enabling drag support in the table breaks drop support in the frame, but it does - what am I doing wrong?

Two options :
Mercury Messenger (http://www.mercury.to/). Could work, but people report this is not very stable.
Windows Live Messenger on Windows on MacIntel using virtualization solutions like Parallels (http://www.mercury.to/)

IChat, MSN and webcam support

Hi all and specially the iChat Apple people here.
I've bought a Mac Mini last weekend and i'm already disappointed. iWeb makes images too big (replacement any old webdesigh tools), Safari works with only 50% of the sites (alternative Firefox), iChat doesn't work with MSN and webcam (alternative Mercury), etc (what's left of the integration between the built-in applications?).
Anyway, i'm in the iChat forum now.
When is Apple going to make iChat MSN Messenger compatible and when is iChat going to support USB webcams?

You can use a USB webcam with iChat using a 3rd party
application that can be found here:

But does that work with the Jabber protocol?
I think that Jabber doesn't support webcam in MSN transport, but i may be wrong there.

Help with linux webcam support in an AIR application!

I am running the 32-bit edition of Ubuntu 10.04.
I recently purchased an application through AIR - PartyBooth (www.partyboothapp.com)
It is written in Adobe AIR, and is a simple program to operate a photobooth. I have 3 different webcams:
1) Logitech Webcam Pro 9000
2) Logitech Quickcam Vision Pro
3) Microsoft LifeCam Cinema
All 3 of these cameras work in every linux webcam software (including skype). They are very well supported webcams in linux.
They do work in the Partybooth application, however, the resolution is locked at 240x240 - which is way too low of a resolution to take nice pictures with. (Again, these cameras all work at full HD resolution in every other linux application that I have ever tried)

Flash Player 11.5 breaking webcam on MacBook Pro 15 Retina

We're seeing the new flash player version 11.5.31.2 on MacBook Pro 15 Retina is breaking the user's webcam. The camera video aspect ratio is sqeazed and the audio it's sending to others is broken making robot like muffled sounds.
This is only happening with FP 11.5 running on MacBook Pro 15 Retina. It works fine in any other version of flash.
To simulate the problem, using a MacBookPro-15-Retina and FP11.5: Open a meetings.io room http://m1.io/ab25s6aKiWe and see if your webcam is working properly.
If you try this room on FP version 11.5 MacBook Pro 15 Retina you'll see your video being squashed and if someone else joins you they should be hearing your audio coming in very badly.
Try it on any other FP version and it should work fine.
Are the rest of you seeing this and is this happening on other systems?

I have the same audio issue, robotic audio distortion on the receiving end when broadcasting from a Mac using flash 11.5.
The issue is not limited to one particular MacBook model, we've seen in in different MacBook models, only when using FP 11.5,
11.4 is fine
The same version of FP (11.5) does not give you any problems in Windows machines
Any idea when would this be fixed?

Would the Wiki be a good home for hardware howtos?
That's where, for example, I learned how to get my simple USB keydrive up and running. As simple as it was to initialize in the end, I certainly didn't know the two or three required modules starting out.
Since I don't know how much insight an Arch maintainer has into the world of hardware they support I don't know how empowered they will be to come up with a "comprehensive" list or document. Maybe it's easier than I think...I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable than myself to answer that.
Please add your experiences to the Wiki though as a Howto...I have a webcam sitting around here somewhere that would be fun to use...
In terms of autoconfiguring, I'm torn. Although I don't like the stress of spending days Googling and the like for tidbits of info to get a configuration right, I also don't like the mystery behind automated tools that sometimes do and sometimes don't work.
Hmmm...it didn't work...why? What did the automated tool do? Which files did it modify? Where are they? Everytime I migrate to a distro that configures stuff for me, I always find myself leaving sometime later to go back to a distro that doesn't. Bah...
Someday in the future when those tools do work 99% of the time, you can bet I'll take advantage though!

Pentax K20D firmware upgrade 1.01 breaks Aperture support

I upgraded my Pentax K20D to a new firmware, 1.01
I used the PEF format since white balance in Aperture worked better with this format than with DNG.
Now I get the "Image format not supported" square in Aperture again.
Sigh!
I really want to use Aperture since it is a good program. But I do not want to use DNG
since this format has some white balance problems with Aperture.
I hope Apple will update the Raw format support to again support the K20D format.
Maybe Pentax changed a version number or something.
I think the format has not changed since both Photoshop and Pentax Photo Laborotory
can read the images without problems.
Anyone know how to report this problem to Apple engineers so that they may fix this?

"OK -- putting some stuff together from another helpful UNIX Pentaxian, Mac users can do the following.
1. Go here: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
2. Download the Mac OS X package ExifTool-7.34.
3. The ExifTool installer should open up. Install, with your admin password
Now you have ExifTools installed. As mentioned previously, Windows users can use a GUI (graphic user interface) wrapper, but Mac users have to use the command line.
4. Download from your card the .PEF files to a folder. Download to a folder on the desktop, called "x" .
5. BACK UP THIS FOLDER NOW. Important: put the backed up .PEFs in a different folder.
6. In Applications -> Utilities, open up "Terminal"
7. In terminal type "cd" and the spacebar. Now, from the desktop, drag the folder with the .PEFs on to the Terminal window. The Mac will auto-complete for you the address. (We are going into a directory with the images.)
8. Now copy and paste the following (much easier than typing):
exiftool -Make="PENTAX Corporation" ~/Desktop/x/*.PEF
If you have the folder "x" open, you can watch ExifTool make copies of the original .PEF files and update the files with the new metadata that let's Aperture or iPhoto process those images.
9. Import into Aperture or iPhoto. Back up your vault or whatever.
10. Delete the contents of "x" when you're satisfied the .PEFs are what you want them to be."
Worked nicely for me - assuming the ONLY problem is the simple text change from PENTAX Corporation to PENTAX in the EXIF data.

Latest WRT610N Firmware Released 7/28/09 Breaks Mac Support.

Applied the latest WRT610N Linksys router firmware released on 7/28/09 and Mac support is now severly impaired. Web pages load FAR FAR more slowly. So please avoid it. It works fine with PC but not Mac.

It is slower on N, slower on G and even slower when connected via ethernet. Slow web browsing all the way around.

Did 10.4.4 break WPA support?

I just bought a D-Link DGL-4300 wireless 108G router. All the Windows-based laptops I have in my home connect flawlessly to the router via WPA2-AES Pre-Key. The only way I can get my powerbook to connect wirelessly to the router is via WEP, which is unacceptable due to its security risks.
Does anyone know whether 10.4.4 broke the WPA/WPA2 support in Tiger or if I am doing something wrong? I would greatly appreciate all the help I can get with this.

My ibook uses OSX 10.4.4 and connects without a problem to WPA and WPA2 networks.
I would suggest you delete all references to your wifi network in your keychain utility.
Then remove the wifi network if setup in your list of preferred networks in your airport network preferneces.
Also scan the area with a sniffer such as kismac to see if there are no other wireless networks using the same chanel as you are thus creating a conflict.
Then try reconnection to your wpa2 network.

Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 breaks headphone support on N...

Hi there,
Software update and the Ovi store recommended that I update to Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 on my N8 running Belle.
I did so over the air from the Ovi store link. Installation didn't interact with me but phone eventually restarted. Maps wouldn't work i.e. selecting the shortcut or going into the menu and locating the Maps icon would not launch it and my wired headset WH-701 was no longer recognised when I inserted it. Checked installed apps - Maps not there. Checked the forums and there's a lot of misinformation out there about this sort of problem, some of it bluetooth specific, but no direct answer :-(
Did a soft restart *#7780# and when the phone restarted had my headphones back :-) BUT no maps :-( Last night did the Ovi store link again from my broadband router this time with the phone in offline mode and wifi on. Installation was a lot more interactive giving progress on each app being installed. It did give a 'running out of memory on c: drive' error a couple of times (I had checked before the installation and had 25Mb). Phone restarted, maps was terrific, even showing locations of pics I'd taken with the phone and offering me public transport timetables in U.S. cities but ... headphones not recognised when inserted!
I believe I'm now in a position where I can use my N8 for maps OR for listening to music/radio but not both. Some people will recommend a hard reset, wipe the thing, start from scratch but I'm wondering if it's not just my handset - what if there is a bug that hasn't been noticed yet? Maybe the low memory in C: is impacting on the installation and some parts are being dropped to accomodate this.
My plan of action is
i) to post this in the hope someone has come across this already and has a working solution
ii) Do a backup of my txt messages, pics and other data files
iii) make a note of all the extra installed apps from Ovi etc.. and make sure I can get them again
iv) do a hard reset, apply all the updates, reinstall all my apps, transfer back any relevant data files and hope I'll have Maps AND be able to listen to music :-)

Some quick regression;
As I'd mentioned Radio I thought I should try that app. Ran it and it gave the message about insert a headphone 'cause it's used as an antenna so I put in the headphone .... and after about 10 secs the headphone symbol popped up! And I could hear static! So I quickly switched to the music player app and played a tune! Sweet! Then the radio app lost the headphones and the music player stopped :-(
So, I unplugged the headphones, ran the radio app, plugged in the headphone as prompted, found a station, listened to it, went to the music player, started a song playing and went back and closed the radio app - song still playing!
Great! Got to hear a few tunes then ... 'Accessory not supported' message and silence :-(
In conclusion, the hardware works and there is an intermittent workaround. Watch this space

Drivers for Sony Webbie MHS-CM1 for webcam/streaming support

Welcome to the Sony Community!
Upon checking the specifications of your unit, you would need the CD-ROM containing the Picture Motion Browser Portable software to be able to use the camera as a webcam. Unfortunately, this program has been discontinued and replaced by PlayMemories Home. This newer software only enables transfer, playback, edit and burning files saved in the camcorder, but it won't enable you to use the USB streaming functions of this unit. Sony has discontinued production of the program discs.

Looking for the drivers for my sony webbie mhs-cm1 for webcam support. It is not on the sony website. I have seen many people say its buried on the cd-rom included however, I do not have the cd-rom as I bought the camera used. Can anyone tell me where to download the drivers for this?

Detect possible webcam resolutions

Happy New Year to everybody!
So, I searched forums and googled and not found anything on how to detect the Webcam supported resolutions in flash.
The whole issue stems from the issue when I use Camera.getCamera() (only have one attached to my laptop) I'm always getting
different values for camera.height and camera.width. Also some 720p cams have different aspect ratio then the old cameras.
Is there possible to detect somehow what's the largets resolution is supported by a webcam? Or all possible resolutions supported?
