10.5.4 won't install-hangs on Configuring Installation

10.5.4 won't install-hangs on Configuring Installation and I have to force quit the installer. I've tried to wait it out for over an hour, but the progress bar never moves. This is with the Combo Updater. I've also tried using Software Update, but the progress bar for checking for new software stops about 3/4 of the way, and hangs forever. Any advice? Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Unfortunately such problems do occur for some people, not necessarily through any fault on the part of the user. Interruption of an update can cause problems for which there are solutions.
Which update was it?
Go to the Apple icon and select Software Update and see what it recommends if anything. Don't actually instal, rather just quit SU and let us know what the result is.
Secondly, open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. Select your hard drive in the LH column then Repair permissions from the lower part on the RH side of the window. It will take about 10mins to complete its task. If there is a list of permissions finishing with a message permissions repaired rerun this to make sure there are no more. See whether the odd behaviour continues.
If it does, insert the original installation dvd and restart holding the C key until the Select your language window appears. Do this & on the next window Select Disk Utility from the Tools menu. Again select your hard drive but this time choose Repair Disk. If there are repairs indicated and they are completed rerun this too to check that no more are needed. When this is finished rerun Repair permissions as well if there were any repairs carried out. Restart the computer normally and see how it all goes.

  • 10.5.3 hangs on "configuring installation" - any ideas please?

Have a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo.
Downloaded the 10.5.3 upgrade to Leopard, restarted, (3 times now) and watch the installer hang at "configuring installation".
    Any ideas please?

We had the same problem with updating one of our G5s. However, after selecting the install and quit button the computer froze up. Now, we can't get the computer to boot up AT ALL. It hangs at the grey screen with the apple and rotating gear. But nothing after that. I have been successful only once to get it to boot up in safe mode, but can't since then.
These are the things I have tried:
    Replaced the internal battery
Tried to start up holding down shift key (safe mode)
Booted up on the eDrive that Tech Tools created and ran all the diagnostics (nothing)
Ran Disk Utility: When verifying permissions it came up with a few errors, but didn't fix any of them. Said that the disk (harddrive) couldn't be "unmounted" therefor couldn't fix anything.

  • My Air is stuck at Installing 3 items "Configuring Installation" for 2 hrs

My Air is stuck at "Installing 3 items" "Configuring Installation." For 2 hrs I've tried to install the latest software updates and it gets stuck. The only thing I've done to it 3 times is to hold the power button and try again with the longest I've left it was for 1 hour at the inital install. I've done a repair permissions but my Air doesn't want to install any of it.
The updates are Firmware for the Air, Firmware for Bluetooth and Safari.

Looks like the Bluetooth firmware is causing the stalled update. Trying to download this:

  • Install of 7.02 upgrade not working... hangs at "configuring installation"

I've tried to update iTunes to 7.02 five times already... Everytime I do it it starts off okay, and then while it's installing it just stops... An hour ago it was at "configuring installation," and it's still there (no movement on the progress bar.) I've never had a problem... EVER... installing an update, so this is really bugging me. Any ideas would be appreciated... HELP!

Did you repair permissions? Try that first.
As a second resort then try the full installer. Not software update. Remove the itunes.pkg file from the library first to make sure things are not getting confused.
I use this protocol for any updates:
    1. Download the installer from the downloads area. (for OSX always download the large but complete combo version vs. the delta installer)
    2. Repair permissions before.
    3. Run the full installer
    4. Repair permissions again.
I have never had a software updtae related problem on 3 macs with the OS and iLife applications ever. So it is working for me. Including IT 7.0.2
In a real pinch you might have to move to the next steps - try deleting itunes plist files and retry with the full installer. Remember to go in and redo your preferences which only takes a minute.
Stil no luck, export the playlists to XML files, trash the application, pkg files, plist files and reinstall from scratch.

  • Update hangs on 'Configuring Installation'

The 10.5.3 updater downloaded through Software Update is hanging at the 'Installing 1 item window at the Configuring Installation stage. What now?

i downloaded the upgrade combo file from apple and installed it instead.
it works. and took less than 10 mins. it did reboot twice on its own.
but now it is installed and verified so from the software update.
however, i am wondering where did the original software update downloaded the file.
cause when i was having problem i know the file was downloaded somewhere as it does not prompt me for download when i retry the upgrade. just wanted to make space on my air.
oh i also tried to repair permission on my air before i ran the combo update. it fixed an error in a log file.

  • ITunes 5 Won't Install -- Hangs on Unscheduling Apple Updates

    Windows 7 64bit
Trying to update from last version to new version. Install goes until it hits the part where the dialog box says "Unscheduling Apple Software Update," the green bars goes a partial way, stops, retreats. Another dialog box appears and says "There is a problem with this Windows Installation Package. A program required for this installation could not be run. Contact..."
Then it backs out and reverts to the original/last iTunes version.
Tried disabling AV and Firewall...no joy.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanx!

using MSICUU2.exe didn't help me.  But,  the new replacement app did:
      http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
I fixed my problem like this:
    Here's the deal -
    1.  can you install itunes via the APPLE SOFTWARE updater?
I couldn't  so I downloaded ITUNES and tried to install it that way.   Hence  I got the same error hang as you.  Nothing worked,  (Multiple attempts at uninstall reinstall,  stopping of Services,  Reg cleaners  etc..)
    2.  If answer is NO to #1 you must fixe the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE Program.
OK  so I couldn't find a Download for this.   But:  if you have WINRAR,  open the ITUNES.EXE and extract the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI file.  Execute the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI separately.   And you will not be able to install it and have a similar issue as per your Itunes install.   This of course leads you to believe that the Itunes.exe  install is also installing all of these components including the applesoftwareupdate silently.   It must BOMB at that portion of the install and you are done.
    3.  Your goal now is to get the applesoftwareupdate installed.   How do you do this.  Well -  here is what I did.
      a.  downloaded and RUN a PC  Installer FIX it tool from Microsoft.  This is a replacement for the older MSI fixer they used to use.
      http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
    b. It will list programs to attempt to fix.
      choose  AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
    c. Once it is done,  then reinstall apple program updater using
    AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Finally it should install since the Microsoft tool appraently fixed corrupted installation files in your registry for this application.
(Please note:  that I also disabled any apple related services such as BONJOUR or IPOD DEvice RUN:  services.msc to get there -  although this man not be necesarry.)
Hence Launch this APPLE UPDATE SOFTWARE (Click the ICON in your Start menu)  it should list ITUNES
select ITUNES from here and it will update.
KEY HERE is to ONLY UPDATE APPLE Stuff via the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE program.  If that program is not working fix it.  Then Bingo.
I am sorry to see folks having this problem for weeks.
APPLE,   Spread the word.  PC's can get corruption in the registry on your product should the update be stopped or computer shut off during an update.  etc...   Please improve your software updater program to check for invalid registry upon launching the app.  This will prevent people thinking it is an APPLE issue.  It appears to be a problem on your PC's registry settings for the APPLE Software update.

  • Leopard  won't Install, hangs when almost done.

    I have a Powermac G5 1.8 ghz with 3.5gb of ram.
I bought the retail Leopard DVD and a brand new 500GB Sata-HD.
All my attempts have failed to install Leopard on my new empty Sata-HD.
Every time I run the installation, it gets to installing ok, but always hangs towards the end.
It stops generally when it says 1 minute left or sometimes at 7 minutes left.
During the 1 or 7 minute left period I leave the G5 alone sometimes for a couple of hours, but no succes.
Than i reboot and try to install again but the same issue appears.
So after 3 installation attempts i have run out of ideas.
    * I checked the the Sata-HD its in good shape and formatted in the good way.
    * My G5 ram is orginal Apple and working fine.
    * Only keyboard and mouse attached.
    * I booted from my Tiger HD and run the hardwaretest cd everything is oke with
    my G5.
Why is a simple installation is not working ?
I saw some people on the net with the same issue but couldn't find a solution.
    A solution or help appreciated.

Thanks for your answers and help.
Its installed Leopard is running will teste it the coming dys on my G5 machine.
A defective orginal Apple( Sony) DVD drive was the failure.
I replaced it with a new Samsung Duallayer and voila got it installed.

  • 10.5.4 install hangs at "Running Installer Script"

OK, my 10.5.4 server install isn't going so well. It's been sitting for over a half hour at "Running Installer Script"
And of course, I stupidly closed my ssh shell and now I can't open a new one (as the install disables ssh access)
Any suggestions (short of "just reboot") ?

I rebooted. Sad, but couldn't wait any longer.
Redid the install via commandline software update, watching install.log as it went, with no issues this time.
No idea what it was, but it's fine now....

Precisely, I have a clean TS which executes like a good kid! But 3 applications LN 8.5.3 incl Sametime , Lotus Notes 8.5.3 FP3 MU and an LN Upgrade pack.  I am attaching a copy of the smsts.log. Please share your views.
I might do a workaround by disabling staging of the image and running it straight from the boot media. Also , if you must know the online installation works just fine.

    Hi Jason,
I'm experiencing this problem with Stand-alone (USB) OSD media also. I think others have reported it but not posted extra info to help diagnose - see "Programs not installing on stand-alone media task sequence" thread.
I've seen this intermittently sometimes builds go through fine but it seems sometimes the Install Software action is just forgotten.  For example I've just built a PC using a usb key successfully with all programs present.  With the same key I've
re-run it and our Firefox package is missing.  The only entries in smsts.log for Firefox are in the 'Parsing' sections that you advise aren't relevant plus this bit:-
    Deleted setting 'CCM_SoftwareDistribution.ADV_AdvertisementID="{39997A92-226D-4813-B2FB-EEABDDA3D13D}",PKG_PackageID="PUB000A3",PRG_ProgramID="Mozilla_Firefox_17.0.4_p1 Silent OSD"'.
This is the same for both successful and unsuccessful installs of the package.  The only difference I can see is that the msiexec log file is created for the successful install but there is no log for an unsuccessful one.
Also the "All Status Messages from a Specific System" report shows the two entries "Program started for advertisement..." & "...completed successfully" only when Firefox installs ok.  For the installs where the app doesn't install there is no mention
whatsoever in the report of actions related to Firefox.
Are there any other logs which may help me get to the bottom of this?
    With thanks
    Jim

    Hi mrmacnology,
Please check and ensure that you should not have any prior version of Acrobat already installed on your computer.

Does anyone know how to resolve this? I have tried doing a hard reset and that does not resolve the issue at all.

    Hi Smileyfrog,
Could you be more specific about your issue.
Which operating system do u use?
    Which model handset you use?
Which firmware version do you have in your mobile? ( *#0000# will reveal the details)
Are you trying to connect thru cable or thru Bluetooth?
Which version of OVI suite you use?

  • 10.5.3 Update on Macbook Pro Hangs -- won't install

I am trying to install the 10.5.3 MacBook Pro Update from Software Update. The update downloads successfully, then asks for restart. I confirm, and then the screen clears, and I get a installation progress dialog that hangs indefinitely saying "Configuring Installation". No progress at all -- it just stays there. A hard boot is required, after which I can try the whole cycle again, with the same results.
I've tried this three times, same result. I've used my install disk to repair disk and repair permissions (there were no errors), still no change. I have no peripheral devices attached to my computer except USB keyboard / mouse and an Apple Cinema display connected via the DVI port.
If anyone has an answer / ideas, I'm all ears. Work just came to a grinding halt.

Go to the Apple website and download the update directly from there and install.

  • IPod won't work after trying to install IOS4; install "hangs"

    Hello,
My son has an iPod touch. It's a month old and bought new, so it would be the latest version. We also have the latest version of iTunes running on Vista.
    The issue . . .
Son was prompted by iTunes to download IOS4. He did this, but when he tried to install it on the iPod, it froze the iPod and iTunes.
We have tried several times to do the install, and on two different computers, but the same thing happens - the install "hangs" at about one-third of the way into the installation.
We also cannot use the iPod at all, because when we switch it on, there's an icon that tells us to connect it to iTunes. And when we do this, we can the hanging issue described above.
Son is distressed. He spent all his birthday money downloading apps for the new iPod, and is worried he may have lost the lot.
I can see from the discussions here that we are not the only ones having this proble. Is anyone closer to finding a solution?
    Thanks.

I fixed this by taking doing the restore/install on a Mac.
It's now working fine on the PC.
Of course, this only helps people who have access to a Mac!
