10.5.5 update for airport woes

A quick look around the various sections of these usergroups shows that 10.5.5 hasn't done much for most people that have airport woes BUT I can report that for me at least, 10.5.5 has cleared up all of my airport reconnection problems. A sure way to send my Macbook into a "password request infinite loop" used to be when I took my Macbook too far away from my airport express, when I brought it back in range it would require a shutdown, same when I closed the lid or it went to sleep by itself, getting it to find the airport again would require a shutdown (mind you iStumbler coud see the express the whole time)
So Apple must be doing something as my reconnection problems seem to have vanished with 10.5.5
Now they just need to figure out why my wireless sensitivity is now about 25% of what it used to be before I installed 10.5.2!

Worked great for me.
Have you repaired permissions with Disk Utility, tried resetting the PRAM or starting up in Safe Mode.
Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen.
Check your System Preferences after each - reselect your startup disk and reselect your wireless network (even if showing OK).
If the above does not work then a factory reset of your AEB might be in order. The setup manuals for all AEBs are here: http://support.apple.com/manuals/#airport

  • Is there an update for airport extreme that is about seven years old?

is there an update for an airport extreme purchased about seven years ago?  The signal in my whole house goes down and has to be re-booted quite often.
I had a service call down by my cable company and their "arris" box in my house sends out a decent signal but the airport extreme gets "bottle-necked" per the service man
    Thanks!

Check the firmware on your AirPort Extreme. The last firmware version for it was version 5.7, however, there were some fairly well-known problems with it that would cause it to become apparently unreponsive on occasion, and require the need to completely power down the Extreme.
If it is running firmware version 5.7 or 5.6 try downgrading it to firmware version 5.5.1. The older AirPort Extreme had a problem with 5.7 that would cause the problem you described, and 5.6 was even worse.
In other words its two most recent firmware updates made things worse. Having experienced this identical problem with two 802.11g/b Extremes, I suspect they had a fundamental flaw that Apple never admitted, but solved with the introduction of the new 802.11n models.
If you are running the most recent version of AirPort Utility for Lion, the option to upload firmware 5.5.1 to your Extreme is not likely to be available though. I am reasonably sure that AirPort Utility 5.5.3 will include the ability to upload an earlier firmware version to your Extreme.
Try it. It could make things better, or worse, or could introduce an entirely new problem, but you can always undo your troubleshooting by uploading the most recent firmware again.
Ultimately you may come to the same solution as I did, which was to buy a new 802.11n Extreme.

  • How do I download ID DL1481 (firmware update for airport express)

I am unable to use Airport express 802.11g with Lion 10.7.4. I have Airport Utility 5.6. When I try to update firmware, the dialogue tells me that current firmware version is 6.3 and that's the only option I have for updating. From Apple Support page I learned there is Firmware Update 7.6.1. available (download ID 1481). However WHERE IS THE FILE??????!!!!!
    I really appreciate your help,

  • My fix for airport woes

Although I am deeply disappointed that Apple has been unable to fix the airport problems that many of us are experiencing I have come up with a "fix"
I purchased a Newer Technology' MaxPower wireless USB adaptor that allows me to bypass the built in, damaged by 10.5.2, airport, and am happy to report that my MacBook is happily connecting to wireless networks once again. Great signal strength (despite Newer Technology's advertising it is about the same as my MacBook pre 10.5.2.
So if you are at your wits end, like I was, at your crippled airport this solution does work.

No you are clearly mistaken. The Self-Assigned IP address problem exists on many Macbook Pro models, including the current model, which I mentioned as being the original computer with the problem. While my 2008 Macbook is older it was working perfectly on Snow Leopard and didn't suffer issues until switching to Lion. So clearly the problem exists on the operating system and not so much the hardware.
I called Apple Support  and they had no fix for the problem and told me that this would hopefully be addressed in a subsequent update. It wasn't until I came accross the answer after trying many different methods that I got both of the Macbooks to connect to my router. Otherwise I wouldn't or could not have been surfing the internet for the last 4 months.
    Cheers.

  • Hourly popup saying there's an update for my AirPort Extreme, when all of my AirPort devices are running the latest firmware. Any fix?

I keep getting a popup saying there's an update for my Airport Extreme, but all of my Airport devices (I have the Extreme, which is one of the original cone-shaped ones, as my base station, two Time Capsules running in bridge mode connected by Ethernet, and an Airport Express [original model] connected via wireless) are running the most recent firmware for each device.
It's harmless but extremely annoying. Has anyone else had this problem? I've tried re-uploading the firmware to all four Airport devices, but it didn't help. Is there any way to turn off the automatic checking? It's obviously not working right in any case.

I assume that you have already done the basic things like powering off the entire network and restarting.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities >  AirPort Utility
Select the AirPort Extreme, and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab located below the row of icons
Click Options near the bottom of the next window
Remove the check mark next to "Check for firmware updates"
Click Done, then click Update and wait for the AirPort Extreme to restart.

  • Airport woes...

so like many, since about the time of the mysterious two airport-related software updates, i've been having airport woes: internet connection randomly dropping. the woes escalated when i started getting hard freezes, where i would have to manually powerdown my macbook by holding the power button. i started noticing these freezes would occur when either i 1) turned on my airport for the first time after coming out of sleep, or 2) when my airport icon would gray out for a second, like it lost its connection. then the freeze would occur.
the woes have escalated: twice in the past three days, after coming out of a hard powerdown, i would click on my airport icon but it would say "No airport card installed." system profiler confirmed. but after resetting it would be okay.
    but the freezes continue.
so i don't know if this is hardware or software-related!

If this helps anyone. Finally got it to work I was connecting with wpa2 personnal which I dropped to wpa it logged in straight away and then went back up to wpa2.

Yup, updated my Apple TV and got sky news and a couple of other new apps I will never use. I am growing increasingly fed up with looking at all the good stuff there is on offer in America and nothing in the UK..... I know I shouldn't look :)
And it's not just Apple I suppose, checking out the apple and Microsoft US movie stores and they have a much better selection. Wish we all had the willpower to stop giving these companies money until they fulfil customer needs...
Ok rant over, I've been building up to that since I found all the films I love on the US site and can't get them here :(

  • Since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base station and time capsule items showing in airport utility as a network.  when able to "forget" them they initially drop off but soon return. how do i get them deleted and stay that way

since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base stations and time caps showing up as though they are a part of my network. sometimes i can "forget" them and they will disappear initially but soon return. i need and want only my connection inside my home . any ideas. i have done a factory reset and set up a new network but they continue to show up.

I'm not convinced that the problem lies in Airport Utility. This same thing was happening to me, nearly exactly as you describe it. The thing is that with me, the problems clearly started when I updated the firmware in my Airport Express (n). That's when all the wacky stuff started happening. Sometimes it would show up in AU, sometimes it didn't and even if it didn't, I could still access the internet through it.
But as you said, the problems got really bad when another Express (b/g) was put on the network with it. Even when it did work, the (b/g) would make it impossibly slow.
You know more about this than me, and clearly have more patience if you've restarted the network fifty times. I gave up at about ten.
In any case, your solution is more of a work around and if you're still having that slow connection problem, I'm not sure you've got it. But thanks for your reporting of this. At least I know I'm not crazy.
