10.5.5 update = No Sound!

I just finished updating my Leopard from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5 and I noticed when it booted that... I have no sound at all. The Icon of the sound has a prohibited signal under the sound-level bar...
And I noticed that my optical output is always ON... it never turns off...
I tried rebooting but it didn't helped...
I have a PowerBook G4 (5,9) 17" 1.67GHz...
Any Idea? :S

After rebooting and clearing the EEPROM of my mac, and no sound still, installed QuickTime 7.5 (I read on the Forum that it might help) and still no sound at all...
So... desperately trying to get audio out of my mac, I tried to revert the installation back to 10.5.4, but with no success...
So my Niger friend said... plug-in your headphones..
all of the sudden, the sound comes out!... Wow... fantastic.. amazing...

Iphone 4s - ios 8.1 Update, No sound

Hello,
I have just updated my iphone 4s from 7.1 to 8.2 (not a stepped migration I know, more of a big bang update!) I did this thinking 8.1 was stable and that stories I had heard of 8.0 problems would have been ironed out. They haven't.
I am a seasoned iPhone and IOS user having had all the models of phone upto the 4s, however now I am very unhappy that I have to consider rolling back my IOS version to be able to continue using my phone effectively.
The problem is that the sound no longer works at all for Youtube, music app, videos =, basically any applications that require watching moving images,.. the slider just simply does not appear on the screen to be able to adjust!.
The sound buttons also do no longer work (apart from within Setting>sounds, where the buttons work intermittently once you have manually adjusted the 'ringer and alerts' slider)
Doing some diagnostics, the mute switch on the side and the buttons both start working, when being manually adjusted in Setting>sounds, though the minute I step outside of Setting>sounds all buttons and the switch stop working completely ??
Glitch, I think so... What step of your your Sprint are you on for 8.2 and when can we expect the next iteration?

10.6.2 Update - No Sound

I installed the 10.6.2 Update this evening and now I have no sound on my iMac. I have restated my computer but nothing I seem to do restores the sound. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

I have the same problem on my iMac (20-inch, Early 2009). I am using 10.5.8 and so the update was 2009-006 for me.
I installed it normally and lost all sound, so I installed it again by downloading the dmg. Still no sounds. SW Update tells me I'm up to date. I have restarted the machine, and following advice from other Discussions I have checked the iChat prefs. Nothing.
I get a little 'no entry' sign under the on-screen volume display. When I go to the sound prefs it says I have no line out, just a digital out. That's odd because my line-out has been connected to a hi-fi amp since I've had the computer.
Any ideas? I'm tempted to Time Machine back a couple of days and then hold back on the update. I'm about to go away for a month, so Skype breaking on our family computer is really unpopular...

OS 10.9.5 update - No sound on my IMac now!

Ran the update last night. Woke up this morning and booted. The sound icon in top right is now grayed out. volume control is at the top of slider and can't be moved. Volume controls on keyboard bring up the square volume control indicator on the screen but dosn't move. System Preffs/sound also has a grayed out volume slider and mute button. HELP ME PLEASE i think my head is going to pop. I tried a re-boot and tried the headphones, but no change. Contact Apple support page also seems to be down. US and UK.

I had something like this a few days back, with sound only working with headphones. I just kept slowly putting headphones in and out of socket, as it seemed to be thinking they were always plugged in. Eventually it corrected itself!

Latest update no sound for text, email, plugging in ipad

since the latest update a couple of days ago my iPad sounds will not work. I mean the ones for incoming text messages, emails, plugging the iPad in- ALL STANDARD SOUNDS OFFERED BY APPLE NOT downloaded sounds! This is very frustrating. I have synced my iPad on my computer, i have shut down the iPad numerous times, if anyone else is having this problem please let me know. If it's an Apple bug please fix it.

I think that you have system sounds muted.
If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7 or iOS 8. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.

1280x720 mp4 videos stop playing video after update, only sound works

this is what appears in the inspector:
h264, 1280QTKitMultiplicationSignWithSpaces720, Milhões
AAC, Estéreo (L R), 48,000 kHz
Only sound, no video anymore. It worked fine until the 9.1 iTunes update. Now I can only see the video with the VLC player.
I have another one that works fine(both sound and video) :
H.264, 960QTKitMultiplicationSignWithSpaces540, Milhões
AAC, Estéreo (L R), 44,100 kHz

1280x720 mp4 videos stop playing video after 9.1 update, only sound works

After upgrading to 9.1, 1280x720 mp4 videos won't play video anymore, only sound. Any help?

I am having a similar problem with videos. After an update, some of my video files play and others do not. They are all in mpeg-4 video format so I don't know that is the difference except the videos that are not playing are larger files of movies. The shorter videos play fine. Any ideas? My quicktime is up to date and I'm using iTunes 9.1. Before updates I was able to view the videos without a problem.
I am guessing that because of the size of the videos...mine are 640x352 that does not play but 480x320 will play

If you plug-in the headphone, does the sound come through
and the volume buttons work?
If so, remove the headphone and check.

OSX 10.8.5 Update HDMI sound not output after source switch

Upgraded my Mac Mini this morning with latest update. Ever since, everytime I switch source on my TV from one to another, I'm not garanteed to have sound being output on my Mac Mini. Only solution is to reboot.
Am I the only one facing this kind of issue???

You might try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Then download and install: OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo).

IDT driver update = No sound from the built-in speakers

I just recently bought an HP - dv6 WF536AV Laptop.
The sounds were proper from the built-in Altec Lansing speakers , till i updated the audio drivers via HP Support Utility.
Now i do not get any playback from the speakers mentioned above, but while plugging in my iPod headphones, there is audio in the headphones.
I've tried to reinstall the IDT Audio driver from the HP Support utility as well as one downloaded from the website :

Yet, nothing is resolved.
Of what i understood from various articles on the web, was that the new driver sets the headphone jack as the primary device for audio output and hence it does not reach the speakers.
Also , I'm pretty sure of this not being a hardware conflict since the laptop is recently purchased and i've rarely used the headphone jack.

Hi,
From the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and then open Device Manager. Click the small arrow next to Sound Video and Game Controllers, right click on the IDT High Definition Audio Codec and select Properties. Click the Driver tab then click on 'Roll back Driver'. Click yes or Ok to any further prompts and let the process complete. Reboot the PC and see if your sound is back. If it is not repeat this process again.

Why does 10.5.0.142 update playback sound as if it were being played through scuba diver mic with a power saw in the background?

What in the world have they done now? After down loading your latest iTunes update (10.5.0.142) the podcasts and radio and any music stored on the iTunes sounds as if it were being played through scuba diver mic with a power saw in the background - nothing can be understood. CD play back is fine. Please tell me how fix this or how to go back to the previous version.

Same problem here. Sounds like Zarvox on my iMac, but way worse. Gonna do a bit of research around iTunes Support site. I should have learned a long time ago--wait a few days before updating. THIS IS VERY ANNOYING!!!!!

10.4.10 Update lowers sound output

Hi-
I know that this is probably on the bottom of the problem list but here it goes:
The 10.4.10 update has lowered the output volume on my iMAC.
On one volume bar ( and subsequent thereof ) the sound output is significantly less than it used to be in 10.4.9.
I believe that 10.4.8 also had this issue.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Have a look at http://www.macfixit.com/ (scroll down to Audio Issues).
It's strange. Before 10.4.9 came out, many people used to complain that the sound was too tinny. Apple listened & boosted the lower end of the volume scale (left upper volume alone).
Were people happy? Seemingly not, though I was. Many now complained that it was too loud, maybe Apple listened again & put it back to where it was.

I have an hp envy 14 on windows 7 64-bit, after making two updates my sound stopped working

I got the update message on my screen from HP Support Assistant, made the two updates they recommeded and when my computer restarted there was no sound and it started to move slower. Any help?

10.4.7 update cuts sound output on iChat

Since 10.4.7 update to our family's machines, (two macminis intel core duo 1.66 GHz, one mac powerbook 800 power pc g3) we've lost the sound output completely on iChat. We can't hear callers although we can see them, but also we can't hear alert sounds like ringing etc when logging in and out.
I checked the audio MIDI Setup and it's at 44.
I've repaired permissions.
Is there any way to uninstall a system update? I really wish I hadn't taken it. I've had iChat since the beginning and never had any problems.
Can anyone make any suggestions to help?
