10.5.5 update Startup disc not mount to desktop

Since updating to 10.5.5 my startup disc (Main) does not mount on desktop or appear in finder.
Disc utility says all is normal. In fact the volume appears in sysprefs as startup volume.
I tried deleting com.apple.finder plist to no avail.
Automatic login is disabled.
Any other suggestions?
What about DiskWarrior or other utilities?
TIA, John

check finder preferences general and sidebar. make sure that hard drives are set to show up in the sidebar and on the desktop. if that doesn't help, it might be the invisibility bug. check out this link

External USB drives, SD cards and even DVD media is not mounting to desktop when connected.
This is a new problem for me and have not had this issue previously. I have successfully connected the same devices in the past.
They all show up in the disc utility as connected. I am unable to mount them from disc utility (this button is disabled) and they are not showing up in Finder either.
    Please help!

    Hi Paul,
Sorry for the late answer. I live in Europe, so that's why I was asleep ;-)
Basically the command tells your computer to unhide everything on your Desktop, so if you don't have a Desktop, something is definitely wrong.
My guess is that there's something wrong with your account on that computer. You can check that by creating a new account in System Preferences (click on Accounts, click the lock in the bottom-left corner and then click the "+" button just above).
Then try mounting "some" media and see if it appears on the new user's Desktop. If not, I would highly recommend to reinstall Mac OS X.

  • Startup disk "Not mounted", needs to be repaired but can't get it to mount

I did a Verify Disk because my HD has been having issues. It told me I needed to backup and reformat, so I went ahead and backed everything up and went to DU in recovery mode.
But when I got there, my Macintosh HD showed up as "Mount Point: Not Mounted", so I did the following:
I clicked on the Macintosh HD from the list and clicked "Mount". It gives me the following:
    Mount failed
The disk "Macintosh HD" could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then try mounting.
So I click "Verify Disk" and it gives me this:
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD"
This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
So I go to click Repair Disk but it's grey and cannot be selected, I assume because my drive is not mounted.
So how can I'm in a paradox and REALLY need help with getting my startup drive mounted again. Can anyone help?
Let me know if I can provide more info for troubleshooting and thank you in advance!

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • IPod will not mount to desktop or iTunes - But still plays fine ??

My iPod will no longer mount on the desktop or in iTunes. I have read through all of the postings on the site, and all of the ideas, and about tried them all. I haven't quite pinpointed the issue I'm having - if anyone can help, please post something for me.
Equipment: iPod 4th Gen - running software version 3.1
Tried connecting via FireWire/USB on two Macintosh G4's - both running 10.4.3, iTunes 6.01. Again, shows up in DiskUtility, but that's it.
I tried iPod updater - but the ipod doesn't show that it's connected to do either an update or a restore. I'd gladly restore the iPod, and reload everything, but it won't show up to be able to do a restore. I also tried in terminal running the /sbin/fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk4s3 in Terminal, and also the back up - dd if=/dev/disk3s3 of=myiPod.dmg - which did create a dmg file, which hopefully backed up my ipod - no biggie if it didn't. I just want to be able to load my podcasts again!
The odd thing is that all the music still plays fine. The iPod charges off both the USB and FireWire. It just won't mount on either computer.
    Any help would be appreciated!!

    Hi all,
I have been having vey similar problems and I am sure it is not an issue with ipod. I have plugged my paperweight(previously know as an ipod of the feb 2004 vintage with a 20g drive)into a pc with itunes and it was recognised. However my and other ipods do not mount in any way onto my ibook. I have tried all the resets and reinstalls possible.
I am considering formatting the hard drive and reinstalling panther from scratch to see if this corrects the problem. However as I am not sure which update caused the problem I am concerned I will end up in the same situation.
If anyone has any advice or knows if using Tiger will help when I reinstall, I would really appreciate it.
I am loathed to do this as it will take days to return my mac to it's current setup. However with out a solution being offered by apple (I have had little help from the customer support lines except to say send it for a service that will cost around £100-£150) I can't see anything else left to try.
    Thanks in advance

  • External drive will not mount to desktop

Ok so i just bought a new hard drive and hooked everything up to my imac. However, it will not mount to my desktop.
    1. I opened disc utility and i can see that my newly purchased hard drive is listed on the LHS with 931 GB available.
    2. I click on the mount button on the top and i get this message- "The disk “disk1s1” could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."
    3. So now i click on First Aid and attempt to repair disc, however I get this message-"Disk Utility stopped repairing “disk1s1” because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

how did that solve the issue? my 350gb seagate drive just started behaving the same way as your initial post -- it shows in Disk Utility but will not mount -- even after running disk repair/verify. This just started happening two days ago...

  • Serial ATA internal drive not mounting to desktop

I installed a serial ATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 Hard Drive - 300GB in my G4 MDD. I had previously installed a 120GB Seagate SATA drive into this same computer and it was immediately mounted onto the desktop after rebooting. However, that didn't happen this time. The drive installed easily but it is not mounting on the desktop. It is attached to the same PCI card as the other SATA drive. When I open disk utility, it does not show up as a SATA drive but as an ATA drive and it says it is not S.M.A.R.T compatible. What have I done wrong in connecting this drive???? Any suggestions would be most helpful

    Hi
If I remember correctly Seagate initially shipped the 7200.9 drives with something called Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) enabled. This isn't supported by most PCI SATA cards (or inbuilt SATA controllers come to that) and the drive won't work. I think Seagate made a utility available to switch if off, but it was Windows only and the drive had to be installed in a PC first.
I'm not sure whether this is the cause of your problem, but more info can be found here:

  • External Hard drive will not mount on desktop

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 that has replaced a broken iBook G4. I've been using a Western Digital MyBook Pro Edition as a secondary drive for my multimedia as well as my iTunes Library. It worked fine on the old iBook.
When I plug it into the Powerbook, using either USB2 or Firewire 800, it will not mount to the desktop. It DOES however appear in the System Profiler as "External HD Button and Lights". The drive is formatted for FAT32 and works fine on my Windows XP desktop machine, so I know the drive functions mechanically. A different hard drive, a Maxtor mounts to the desktop fine using USB2, so it isn't a bus issue.
This is driving me nuts. I LOVE this computer, but I have WAY more invested in music than the cost of the computer.
    Thanks in advance.

It took a while to figure it out but apparently there was a conflict with bluetooth. I disabled it and all is well.

  • After last update, Thunderbird does not appear on desktop when started (XP Professional).

Since yesterday's update, when I start Thunderbird, it appears in the task bar, but not on the desktop. I can select it, or use Task Manager to "switch to" it, but right-clicking it does not give me a menu. (It used to be that it opened outside the visible desktop, but right-click gave me a "move" option and I could move it to the visible screen with the cursor keys). I know XP is on its way out, but...

    Start >Programs >Mozilla Thunderbird
right click and select 'Create shortcut'
It should ask to put shortcut on desktop, click on Yes

  • External Drive not mounting on Desktop but visible on sidebar

I have an external drive Iomega 1T that appears on the destop on Snow Leopard and all is perfect with it, but not showing on the destop in Lion (installed on another internal), it shows up on the sidebar and can access it from there without issues. Disk utilities shows it and can repair permissions and all but can't mount on desktop, my only option there is to unmount it, but is not even showing up on desktop to unmount it.
Do I need to reformat it to mount on desktop? Any help is appreciated.

A little bit, yes. What got me a little confused was that all of my 3 internal drives showed up, and I thought that by selecting it to appear on the sidebar would be visible on the desktop. Thanks again, Lion is very snappy on my early 2008 8 core 2.8, like having a new Mac .

  • IPod recently does not mount to desktop, intermitten problem

My iPod dos not want to mount to desktop on my G5. This is something of an intermittent problem. I plug into firewire port, iPod comesalive, shows main screen. Nothing happens. After a while iPod goes to sleep and shows chargin icon.
This is pretty intermittent, but seems to be getting worse as time goes on. I began to think there was something physically wrong with the cabel, port etc. until I realized it had to be getting a signal to be charging.
    Any good ideas?

Interestingly enough, it mounted fine when using a USB cable. Now I wonder if the problem is in the firewire cable of the firewire port.

  • Tiger install discs not mounting

    Hi folks,
My girlfriends G4 Powerbook (867mhz) has been playing up, sluggish, kernal panics etc.
The usual maintenance/troubleshooting has made little difference.
I suggested she re-install Tiger, however her Tiger discs won`t mount (other discs are fine).
Q: Can I use the install disc that came with my G5dual 2.7 ?
    Cheers
ps also posted in powerbook forum

I'm assuming you're trying to use machine specific disks (gray in color) with the G4. Apple changed how the bundled disks are made starting with Tiger. The disks check to see if the hardware matches the Mac they came with. If not, they won't work.
In order to install Tiger on her G4, you'll have to purchase a retail, commercial copy of Tiger.

  • USB hard disc not mounting.

I've just got a new USB 2 hard drive (20GB Smartdisk Fotochute FAT32 formatted)) but I can't get it to mount on my iMac (C2D 24") in OS X (10.4.10).
The drive works fine on my iBook G3 (700mhz 10.4.9) and also on the iMac in bootcamp, it appears in system profiler but not in Disk Utility. The oddest thing of all is that it works fine when connected via the USB port on the keyboard. I've tried connecting through my belkin hub and directly to all 3 ports on the iMac with and without the drives external power connected.
I have 2 other USB hard drives that connect just fine (one FAT32 and one HFS+ formatted).
Any ideas what might be stopping the drive from mounting?
    24" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi FonzCam
Shut down and disconnect all USB devices (including hubs and extension cables) except for your Apple keyboard and mouse. Restart, then connect your External HD directly to your computer. If your External HD now mounts and works properly, there is a conflict between that device and one of your other USB devices or hub. There maybe another device (iPod, jump drive, scanner, etc...) already mounted on the (USB string or chain) causing a conflict.

  • Discs not mounting

so this is wierd, has anyone had this happen? i am going through my cd collection and copying them to my external HD using itunes. i have noticed that about 50% of the time i put in a CD and itunes reads it and asks if i want to add it to my library. i click yes and POOF it disappears. no longer showing in itunes or on the desktop. i then go into disc utilities and mount it - once again itunes asks if i want to add it, i click yes and no further problems. i have cleaned my superdrive using a commercial lens cleaner disc. any ideas?

Yes this is happening to me too! It is getting somewhat annoying as there doesn't appear to be any pattern associated with it happening. Keen to have an answer on this one.

  • External Firewire drive does not mount on desktop now.

    Greetings everyone.
G5 dual, 4.6GB ram, OSX 10.4.10, external firewire drive, formerly worked fine, now is invisible.
Not the drive. New purchase, worked fine until a restart. Not the cable. Power is getting from the G5 to the firewire drive. Not the port. I also have a firewire card instlaled so I have three ports to connect it to (and two on the FW drive). No combination works. Not the computer, the FW drive also fails to appear on an iBook. Not the OS. I did a clean install to make sure.
I'm not a newbie. I know what I'm doing. Until now! DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius and Apple's Disk Utility cannot see the drive.
The FW drive is a Powerbook internal HD inserted into a case, purchased seperately.
At my wits' end. Can anyone help please.

I am suddenly having this EXACT problem. I have two Firelite firewire drives (one 60G and one 80G) that are suddenly refusing to mount on my older dual 1.25GHz G4 tower. They are also suddenly refusing to mount on my non-intel iMac. They will both mount painlessly on my new Intel MacBook Pro, but that's not much use, since the point of the firewire drives is to transfer files between these computers. I'm updating all of them to 10.4.10 to see if that's the issue...

  • Hard drive not mounting to desktop/computer

I am setting up my AirPort Extreme 802.11 with an attached 300GB LaCie Brick hard drive with iTunes library. I can see that the Brick is recognized in the AirPort Utility > disks page, but it will not load onto my computer and I can not access it. I have the utility set to auto mount disks and have even tried to manually mount the disc, but it will not appear on the desktop. Am I missing something?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hello,
I've got the same situation pretty much exactly.
I am using a Lacie porsche 250g USB disk.
Airport Disk Utility doesn't see the volume.
Airport Utility sees it just fine, but it is not showing on the desktop as it was in the past.
The AEBS was working, and the disk was being mounted properly until I began trying different configurations to allow my networked PC to also see the volume.
It seems to have started after I had set up the AEBS to assign access to the disk using accounts. I set up a couple accounts, just to see how they worked, and restarted the AEBS, but the volume did not appear. I set it back to the initial setting requiring password for disk access, and I've not managed to get it working properly again.
Any help at all would be fantastic.
