10.5.5 Update stuck -  is it worth all the trouble ?

I have just downloaded the latest update ( 10.5.5 ) and then rebooted my iMac , next the software Update
box appeared on screen as usual, saying .. Installing 1 item , configuring Installation .
Then the Blue progress bar started to move to the right , went about 1/4 of an inch and stopped there, I left the iMac running for Two hours and the progress blue bar had not moved. I then turned off the iMac , re booted , re connected to the internet , clicked software up date, the 10.5.5 update was shown again, I then clicked to download this update, then the do you want to shutdown now notice appeared, so I shutdown again and the whole same process started again as before . So basically It seems that the update 10.5.5 has been downloaded onto my iMac, but gets stuck on the .. Installing 1 item - configuring Installation part.
I have gone through the Zap PRAM and Repair Permission , but that seems not to have resolved any thing
I did un plug any external USB items while the - Installing 1 item - configuring Installation part was in operation.
and Ive gone through the Apple web page ... Mac OS X 10.5: Troubleshooting installation, startup, and login issues , ..... but cannot see any thing that relates to my problem
I have had a long look through this forum for an answer , but no luck yet only, other people with different 10.5.5 update problems.
I only have a dial up internet connection which makes this large update a pain in the backside to do, so If I have to re install this 10.5.5 update again its going to drive me back to drink .
Other that that the iMac is running fine.
Should I have waited a bit longer before trying to update to 10.5.5 , it it really worth all the trouble ?
I am fairly new to Apple Mac's and I never thought that there would ever be a problem with a simple update
to my first ever Mac , a bit disappointing really .
so any help would be most appreciated which hopfully will re boost my confidence in the whole new Mac experience
Thanks

Not to muddy the waters, but I do not agree with the statement, "The only time you should update is when a software you need only runs on that update."
As the description of the update says, you must also consider improvements in stability & most importantly security. While OS X is among the most secure of operating systems, security flaws are discovered from time to time, & to prevent the possibility of someone exploiting them, you should seriously consider keeping your OS version up-to-date. Updates also generally include miscellaneous fixes that often do improve stability of applications & the OS itself.
While the About the Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update article doesn't mention any new security updates that you could not get from the Apple security updates page, Apple does not always mention everything an update includes, so it is not a good idea to assume your security is assured unless you do apply the latest OS update. And of course, if any of the improvements mentioned in the "What's included?" section of the article are of interest to you, you will have to apply the update to get them.
Regarding the "stuck" installation itself, Apple recommends in the previously mentioned "About the Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update" article that you should download & run the stand alone Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update if an interruption occurs during installation. This is worth doing even if everything seems OK after an interrupted installation: as Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates explains, if the installation stops during the "optimization" step, performance may be affected.
I do not agree with everything 'a brody' says, but I heartily agree with his emphasis on the importance of having a backup. (Also note that Apple strongly recommends this precaution!)

  • Is Cloud worth all the trouble it causes?

It's almost gotten amusing to see how much trouble the CC implementation is causing. The whole concept doesn't scale for anyone who doesn't have the luxury of (very) high speed Internet connections. Even for those who do, there have been difficulties galore - just browse the forums. (The countless posts and questions are only representative of users who took the time to write.) I suppose the ultimate decision is whether to applaud Adobe for being a pioneer in cloud technology or to condemn them for inflicting a technology in its infancy that has caused so many wasted user-hours. I lean strongly to the latter. Customers shouldn't have to navigate pitfalls that have appeared as a byproduct of Adobe's learning curve. I'm one of the many who run CC and CS6 Creative Suite side-by-side because CC has broken some Photoshop plugins. There's an important update to PS CS6, but I can't install it because of a poorly conceived installer assumption (that all unused language files would be left intact in the app). Rather than fix this, Adobe has resorted to the uninstall/reinstall nonsense, which is a known indicator of indifferent, vanishing support. (Another is using forums as a substitute for trained technical specialists.)
If one looks hard enough, there is the largely unpublicized site, http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cc-direct-download-links.html. Here one can download Assistant-free installers for CC products. Even this grudging accomodation from Adobe falls short of the mark and illustrates Adobe's intransigence about their new way of doing things. The obvious solution would be for Adobe to provide installable media as an option. This  provoked a long and interesting discussion on the same site, http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cc-direct-download-links.html/comment-page-2#comment-44824. Read from Daniel's first comment on July 7th, 2013 to end. To summarize, it's about the illusory hoops one must jump through if their Internet connections are too slow or too secure to play in the cloud.
From my vantage point, there are two candidates for the 2013 Booby Prize, Adobe for its cloud-only stance and Microsoft for Windows 8 and the RT tablets. It's too close to call, but Adobe could get back on course a lot easier than Microsoft.

After 3 months of reviewing the CC for Teams I have come to the conclusion that:
Adobe MAX was a smoke and mirror trick.
Adobe should be taken to court and sued for their con job called Adobe MAX.
Adobe should be taken to court and sued for charging extra for a team accounts and delivering the same thing as a single user.
Complaints need to be filed with the credit card companies that Adobe is stealing from their customers and the credit card companies should stop all payments to Adobe until can verify that they are delivering the products customers are paying for.
Tell anyone that is thinking of going the CC route to stay away from it, IT DOES NOT WORK!

  • Was it worth all the Bother

    Hello there,
This morning I had no connection to broadband,  orange broadband light on, on HH2.
rang the broadband service status Tel/number no update since yesterday.
Did all the usual, reset hub,  unplugged everything and moved to test socket, still the same, renewed filter, as the call centre would have told me to do all of this. no luck, all these checks done with great difficulty.
Now to ring 08001114567, I thought my H.Hub was faulty again,
so cup of tea at hand corded phone, sat by table all documents at the ready.
Automated answer service tells me there is a fault at my exchange and will be back in service within an hour which it was.
Why wasn't the service status message updated it would have saved me such a lot of unnecessary hassle.

I have a used mac computer. I want to sync and update my iphone. Currently itunes tells me that my iphone is connected to a different itunes account and will sync, but delete everything from my phone. How do I make itunes sync and update my phone without deleting all the current information on my phone?

Iphone will sync with one and only one cpomptuer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.  This is the design of the  iphone.
It will erase the content when you sync.
Why not update from the comptuer with which you normally sync?

    Hi
So just close iTunes and re-open iTunes thats it and that worked for you?
When you say reset your settings do you mean to factory settings? As my iPod was swapped at the store for a new one and the problem is still there...
    Thanks.

Apps are only tied to one account... You can set up two iTunes accounts on your computer, however, and let his iPad sync to his account. If he has never backed up his apps to a computer, however, he will have to redownload all the apps. Afterwards, he can backup to iCloud instead of your computer.

You cannot use someone else's apps without violating the license agreement. The apps are tied to the owner (via Apple ID). The right thing to do would be to update and start fresh.

    Hi msclaude,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  I'm not sure from your post what steps you have tried, but it sounds like you may need to use recovery mode to address the issue with your unresponsive iPod touch.

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can put your iOS device into recovery mode, then restore it using iTunes.
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.Get more help
Learn what to do if you don't see your device in iTunes for OS X, or in iTunes for Windows.
If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.
I hope this information helps ....

How do you delete old music that it don't want anymore for the iOS 7 update. It gave me all the music I deleted in the past. I tried going to settings and turning off music from the past and it got rid of my music I recently purchased.

    Hello there, Syd_ma22.
The answer to how to delete a song on your phone in iOS7 is found on page 62 of the iPhone User's Manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
    Specifically:
Remove a song from iPhone. Tap Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Education Edge -- Firefox update, 6.0.2, disables all the pull-down menus

We use Education Edge software to manage attendance, grades, etc. at our school. The new Firefox update, 6.0.2, disables all the pull-down menus. They show up, but the fields are all empty. Fix? Is there a way to revert to the previous version which worked fine?

I have this problem on my dual monitor system. I found a solution that works. Click Start, Run, sysdm.cpl
In the resulting System Properties window, click the Advanced tab, then click settings under Performance. You will have one of four radio buttons enabled. Here what I did. I enabled "Adjust for For Best Appearance" and clicked apply. I then unchecked the box "Show Shadow under windows" and clicked apply again. Problem solved.

  • After updating to iBooks 2.1 all the text in my book is gone?

I have a book on the iBookstore <http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/some-secrets-should-never/id502402365?mt=11&uo=4>. All was fine till the iBooks 2.1 update. After updating all the text has disappeared in landscape mode.  Working fine in portrait.
It was authored in IBA 1.0 but I just updated to 1.1 to see if the text returned after updating and previewing it. No go still broken. Not sure where to start.
    To be clear:
Worked fine with IBA1.0 and iBooks 2.0. Updated iBooks to 2.1 and it broke.  My customers will be experiencing the same issue. Those that update will get their books broken...  :-(

Thanks so much for going to so much trouble on my behalf Barnheisel.
To be honest I don't remember why I made the decisions I did. It was a week of pain as I ran into limitation after limitation while trying to put this thing together using a 1.0 product. Because I was doing odd things I ran into some really odd bugs. Clearly IBA was not designed to do what I was trying to do so it was from my perspecive hack after hack. There were reasons for what I did but they may have been based on misunderstandings as I fought to get my head round IBA.
For example I seem to remember it had to be one text chain to get the text to appear in portrait mode. Text just entered into a text box did not display in portrait mode. Maybe there is a way to do it but at the time I could not find it.  All other weird decsions where like that.
I wanted the images to appear in portrait mode and that was the only way I could find to achieve it.
I am keen to see what you find out when you update to 2.1.  Is there anyway I can get back to 2.0 for testing now that I have upgraded?
    thanks again,
    Mark

  • How do i update my iPad without losing all the data?

whenever i want to update my ipad, it tells me that in order to update to ios 5 i must delete all of the data and i dont want to.

If you are still on iOS 4, then the update to iOS 5 should automatically backup your content, wipe the device and install iOS 5.1, and then restore your content from that backup.
To try and limit any potential issues with the update, first copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. You should also backup the device (right-click the iPad 'device' and select 'back up'), and copy off any important documents, files, notes etc (e.g. by email, the file sharing section at the bottom of the Apps tab in iTunes, wifi, whatever the apps that you use support) - the update process should backup and restore the content but it's best to be safe.

  • Updated iPod touch and now all the songs are gone.

So I decided to update my iPod touch to iOS 5, and it took a good 13 hours for it to "back up." So I let it happen and I set it up and all again, and I turn it on and everything is gone. So I go to iCloud and back up on my device and all my apps and pictures came back. However, my music was still gone. But when I plug my iPod in and go to iTunes, ALL of my music is in the music tab under my device, and it all plays perfectly! So pretty much, all my music is shown on iTunes under my device, yet no music is on my actual device. I'm in a dilemma because I don't have all the music I had on my iPod in my iTunes library. Also, when I try to add songs to my iPod, it's not working at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Non-iTunes purchased media is not included in your iCloud backup and no synced media like apps and music are in a backup that iTunes makes on your computer. If you subscribed to iTunes Match you can get those back through Match.
