10.5.6 and startup loop

I just installed 10.5.6 on the first generation macbook pro and now it does not wannt to go beyond the apple logo and load screen...its been looping for about 15 minutes...any thoughts? or is this happening to anyone?

Maybe not, but when you can't rely on anything beyond the kernel being solid, the first step IMHO should be to restore your data back to what it was using known working data. I'm not saying hardware would be the next most obvious choice to look at or pulling RAM. Far from it. My procedure is to:
1-1. Ensure the data is safe. If it is a full clone backup prior to the installation, restore that, or a restorable Time Machine backup. Otherwise proceed to step 2. By safe, I mean you need two copies off system of the software, ready for restoration at another time. Additionally, check if the third party applications and drivers have been tested with the operating system update in question.
1-2. If it isn't safe and isn't accessible, recover it via Target Disk Mode if possible, and if not, with a data recovery tool. By safe, I mean you need two copies off system of the software, ready for restoration at another time.
2. Make sure the directory is fine.
3-1. If the directory is fine, and the system has not been compromised by third party "maintenance" applications or drivers or plugins, then try zapping the PRAM with the caveat of not doing so if the clock battery is 4 or more years old. proceed to step 3-2.
3-2 if 3-1 does not work, then try archive and installing and applying the combo update. Proceed to 4.
3-3. If the directory is fine, and it has been compromised by those, try the archive and install and reapplication of the previous combo update and see if those work. If they don't a rebuild of the operating system from scratch may be necessary, and reinstallation of the third party software from scratch may be necessary, while recovering the user created data immediately after the installation of the software.
3-4 If the directory is not good, attempt repairing it, and see if the system will boot.
4. Backup the data once you have a working system.

  • Startup loop

    Hey all,
I have an iBook G4 that is stuck in an infinite startup loop. I am running OS 10.4.8 and this started to happen after an application update. It said the computer had to restart, and now it is just stuck in a loop. The "Starting OS X" screen comes up, disappears, screen changes colors, the pointer comes up, that goes away, screen changes, the "Starting OS X" screen comes up again, and keeps going in that loop. So if anyone has/had this problem and/or knows how to fix it, please let me know.

    if you use 10.4:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
archive and install puts in new system folder - it does not affect applications, make sure "preserve user and network settings" is selected, any kind of installation is risky though:
"..Important: This option leaves non-Apple-installed (third-party) items intact, though they may be moved, depending on their location. Usually it's best to reinstall third-party software after an Archive and Install installation to ensure they work correctly..", so try at your own risk.
again, no way to know what's causing the problem yet, hopefully it's just OS got corrupted.

  • Startup Loop after Lion software update on MacBook

I installed the software update for Lion last night...and now I am in a startup loop nightmare...white screen with apple logo for about 5 minutes or so...then the computer shuts itself off ...then restarts only to do it again & again...when I held the command + s keys down at startup I get the error message "error reading driver 'System\Library\Extensions\AppleACPIPlatform.kext\Contents\MacOS\'.-
Any advice on what to do next? Thanks in advance

If I understand you right, I should backup my Macbook Pro if it had not been backed up for a while, before downloading the Update?
Yes. For one reason, it will flush all "local snapshots" to the backup device. It's a good idea to connect the backup drive periodically, otherwise it will eventually stop creating those "local snapshots". That period of time is up to you, and is a function of the amount of work created between backups. Once a week generally works for me, but I'd definitely back up prior to any OS X update.
About a minute is about right, from a fully shut down condition to the login screen. Macs are designed to be ignored when you're not using them. Shut the lid or just walk away from it; there really is no benefit to shutting down completely unless you don't intend to use your Mac for several days. Waking up from sleep is almost instantaneous by comparison.
Thank you very much for your help. If I click the "this helped me" button, will I still later be able to choose "this solved my question" if my problem was solved?
Yes. The intent (I believe) is to accentuate answers most likely to benefit those seeking answers to similar questions. It's not a perfect system but it's the only one this site offers.

  • Macbook pro endless startup loop

    This is weird.
My Mac book Pro will not startup but goes into an endless startup loop, shutting down and trying to start over and over.
I cannot archive and install from 10.5 disc.
But when I insert the 10.4 disc and restart twice my regular 10.5 comes up and acts ok.
    Anyone with a clue?

this is the kind of problem I've been having with a 4 day old MB 2.2, 13", 10.5.2. I really don't want to have to buy disk Warrior, though a great product and have several versions over the years (has saved my butt more then once). I am thinking the problem is somewhere between parental controls (which I have on since this is my daughters computer and is the startup account) and maybe spot light doing its initial indexing but never quit getting finished before computer is shut down.
I have reinstalled from disk that came with computer 10.5.1 and done all current updates to 10.5.2, 4 times now at a cost of about 4hrs per install. Can not install and archive, get an error message. Applecare could not help - tried resetting pram and tried reinstalling system. Can't boot into minimal system startup. Disk is o.k. per disk utility.
I've seen many posts regarding parental control problems and some regarding endless start up but not both together. Anyone have thoughts of other things to try? Anyone think the two might be related? Computer will be going back in next 24-48hrs if problem isn't resolved

  • RSD - Reset PRAM - Startup loops

I have a white MacBook 2.0 with 2 GB of RAM that has a mild case of the Random Shutdown Disease/Syndrome. I run it on AC with the battery removed, and resetting the PMU doesn't do anything. Usually if I wait for it to cool and then reset the PRAM it'll actually stay on. (I've been holding off on sending it in because at school you just can't afford to not have a computer for a few days or weeks.)
So this evening some random power failure turned everything off in the dorm. When power was restored, I turned on the MB, and it started up cold (optical drive grinds, you hear the chime, and the hard drive spins down). I tried again with the same result. So I decided to reset the PRAM, as I had usually done before to fix the problem. I typically hold down the keys until I hear the chime once or twice again, but this time the MB actually shut off after the successive chimes. I waited a few minutes. And then I pressed just the power button this time, and so begins this endless startup loop. The MB's optical drive grinds, there's no chime, and then there's a very short pause right before the drive grinds again. The only way to make it stop is to remove power or hold down the power button. So now my MB can't even chime up...
    Suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.

    Hello wwwes,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is there a disk in your optical drive? If you think there may be then startup the unit while holding down the eject button and the trackpad click button at the same time. Hold it down until you've heard your noise pattern a few times, that would be a good guess that it's probably not going to eject anything.
Next, Make sure you've followed all the steps here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303234
After that you may want to attempt re-seating your memory chips (if you feel comfortable doing so) You will find instructions here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721
If these don't work then your next step is to seek service for your MacBook. You can call 1-800-APL-CARE to have a box shipped to you to send to the AppleCare Repair Center or you can visit a local Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for in-store or mail-in repair. Go to this link to find a service provider:

  • IPod in startup loop?!

    Hi,
I have a 5th Gen 80GB iPod and a Macbook Pro running 10.4.10. For some reason my iPod is in what I can only call a "startup loop." The Apple logo appears and I can hear the iPod's hard disc spin up, then the screen goes black and it starts again... and again... and again... and again. I have tried to reset the device, but I can't even do that. I am running the latest iPod software too.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thx

I am having the EXACT same problem with my 80GB 5.5 iPod. It is stuck in this startup loop. It will not show up in iTunes or the desktop and even though it displays the "do not disconnect" message, it will not show up in iTunes, so I can't restore the software. Resetting doesn't work either.
UPDATE: on the latest restart attempt, it displays the Sad Mac face, with the web address for Apple iPod support. Appears to be a hard drive problem--at least that would be my guess.

  • 7344 servo motion switching between open and closed loop operation

I have a custom end-of-line test system presently using a 4-axis 7344 servo controller to perform various functional tests on small, brushed DC motors. The system is programmed in C/C++ and uses flex motion functions to control the motor during testing. Motors are coupled to external encoder feedback and third party PWM drives running in closed-loop torque mode from an analog command signal. The system uses all four motion axis channels on the 7344 board to independently and asynchronously test up to four production motors at a time.
In closed-loop mode, the system runs without issue, satisfying the battery of testing protocols executed by this system. I now have a request to add additional test functionality to the system. This testing must be run in open loop mode. Specifically, I need to use my +/- 10v analog output command to my torque drive to send different DAC output levels to the connected motor.drive while monitoring response.
I do not believe the flex motion library or 7344 controller includes functions to easily switch between open and closed loop mode without sending a new drive configuration. I am also under the impression that I cannot reconfigure one (or more) servo controller axis channels without disabling the entire drive. As my system runs each axis channel in an asynchronous manner, any requirement to shutdown all drives each time I change modes is an unworkable solution.
I am open to all ideas that will allow asynchronous operation of my 4 motor testing stations. If the only solution is to add a second 7344 controller and mechanical relays to switch the drive and motor wiring between two separately configured servo channels, so be it. I just want to explore any available avenue before I place a price tag on this new system requirement.
    Bob

    Jochen,
Thank you for the quick response. The 7344 board does an excellent job running my manufacturing motor assemblies through a custom end-of-line tester in closed loop mode. A portion of the performance history and test result couples the motor through a mechanical load and external shaft. The shaft is in contact with a linear encoder that closes my servo loop.
My new manufacturing requirement is to also sample/document how the small DC motor behaves in open loop operation. Your solution is exactly what I need to perform the additional functional tests on the product I am manufacturing. I see no reason why this cannot work. I was originally concerned that I would need to reinitialize the 7344 board after changing axis configuration. Initialization is a global event and impacts all four channels on the 7344 board.
Using flex_config_axis() to change axis configuration on a single channel without disturbing other potentially running axis channels will solve my concern. It will be several weeks before I can return to the manufacturing facility where the 7344-based testing machine is located. I will update this thread once I verify a successful result.

what is difference between Startup upgrade and startup migration.

I am having the metalink note.
STARTUP MIGRATE was introduced in 9.2 as a mechanism to be sure that most everything that needs to be done to run an upgrade script or a patch script is done automatically. In the past, customers were expected to adjust certain initialization parameters prior to beginning an upgrade or applying a a patch,
but most of this is now done automatically by STARTUP MIGRATE.
When a customer starts a database in MIGRATE mode, the following ALTER SYSTEM
    commands will be set automatically:

  • MIDI Banks and Apple Loops Trustworthy Downloads?

I am currently attempting to locate and download MIDI banks and Apple Loops that I can use in the future, but I'm looking for a trustworthy site (a one stop shop if you will) to do this.  If we only have Garageband installed, and not Pro Logic or any other programs, then is Garageband the only program to open up and play around with our MIDI banks or Apple Loops just for fun?  I mean, is there another way we can open our loops simply to play around with and be able to pick out sounds we like, then perhaps save different sounds we like for future reference?  I'm confused on how to actually open the loops and MIDI banks, so I need someone to tell me precisely how to do this if we just want to begin exploring.  Thanks!

You can open Apple Loops in the Quicktime Player. Many sample producers offer their libraries in Apple Loops format as well as the more traditional standard WAV nowadays, so you should have no trouble finding plenty of resources.
Quicktime Player will also play GM MIDI files.

  • How to code a parallel 'for loop' and 'while loop' where the while loop cannot terminate until the for loop has finished?? (queues also present)

I've attached a sample VI that I just cannot figure out how to get working the way that I want.  I've labeled the some sections with black-on-yellow text boxes for clarity during the description that follows in the next few sentences.  Here's what I want:
    1) overall -- i'm intend for this to be a subVI that will do data acquisition and write the data to a file.  I want it to use a producer/consumer approach.  The producer construct is the 'parallel for loop' that runs an exact number of times depending on user input (which will come from the mainVI that is not included).  For now I've wired a 1-D array w/ 2 elements as a test case.  During the producer loop, the data is acquired and put into a queue to be delt with in the consumer loop (for now, i just add a random number to the queue).
    2) the consumer construct is the 'parallel while loop'.  It will dequeue elements and write them to a file.  I want this to keep running continuously and parallel until two conditions are met.
          i. the for loop has finished execution
          ii. the queue is empty.
when the conditions are met, the while loop will exit, close the queue, and the subVI will finish. (and return stuff to mainVI that i can deal with on my own)
    Here's the problems.
    1)  in the "parallel for loop" I have a flat sequence structure.. I haven't had time to incorporate some data dependency into these two sequential sections, but basically, I just care that the "inner while loop" condition is met before the data is collected and queued.  I think I can do this on my own, but if you have suggestions, I'm interested.
    2)  I can easily get the outer for and while loops to run sequentially, but I want them to run in parallel.  My reasoning for this is that that I anticipate the two tasks taking very different amounts of time. .. basically, I want the while loop to just keep polling the queue to get everything out of it (or I suppose I could somehow use notifiers - suggestions welcome)...  the thing is, this loop will probably run faster than the for loop, so just checking to see that the queue is empty will not work... I need to meet the additional condition that nothing else will be placed in the queue - and this condition is met when the for loop is complete. basically, I just can't figure out how to do this.
    3) for now, I've placed a simple stop button in the 'parallel while loop', but I must be missing something fundamental here, because the stop button is totally unresponsive.  i.e. - when I press it, it stays depressed, and nothing happens.
    suggestions are totally welcome!
    thanks,
    -Z

So i read a bit more about the 'dequeue element' function, and as I understand it, since there is no timeout wired to the dequeue element function, it will wait forever, thus the race condition I suggested above can never happen!
    Yes, you got it!
As I've thought about it a bit more, there's a few things that surprise me... first, the reason the 'dequeue element while loop' errors is not because there's nothing in the queue, it's becaues the queue has been released and it's trying to access that released queue...   However the problem I have is this --- Even though there's no timeout wired to the dequeue element, I still would think that the while loop that contains it would continue to run at whatever pace it wanted -- and as i said before.. most of the time, it would find that there is nothing to dequeue, but once in a while, something is there.  however, it seems that this loop only runs when something has been enqueued.  the reason I say this is illustrated in the next code sample MODv2 that's attached below.  I've added a stop button to the "queue size while loop" so the program runs until that is pressed.  I've also added a simple conditional in the "dequeue while loop"  that generates a random number if it a button is pressed... but this button is totally non-responsive... which means to me that the "dequeue while loop" isn't actually continuously running, but only when an element is added to the queue.  this still seems almost like the 'dequeue while loop" waits for a notifier from the queue telling it to run.  can you explain this to me? because it is different from what I expect to be happening.

I am sorry Erickkasner but there is no longer direct support provided for Creative Suite 5.5 installation issues.
You are welcome to post any specific errors you are able to discover within your installation log to this discussion.  Since you are using Windows then Exit Code 15 could mean one of the following:
    Installer database is corrupted
Update pending to your operating system
Improper permissions set for the Media.db
The installation log file should provide additional insight into the exact error you are experiencing.  Please make sure to use the find command to look for the words 'ERROR' and 'FATAL' to locate the relevant error messages.

Sounds like the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.
