10.5.6 update - How to make a Backup copy

hi guys - new to Mac's so be patient -
I've updated my system from 10.5.5 to the latest 10.5.6 - no problems yet -
how do I make a copy, on disc - that I can use in future, to restore the "new" system, if need be - as I would, using the 10.5.5 system disc that originally came with my laptop -
without this, I assume I would have to use the original 10.5.5 disc, then download the 10.5.6 update again - seems a long way around
I don't want to insert the original 10.5.5 disc and start messing around incase I do any damage to it - I would rather have some info first
thanks for your help
p.s. a great bit of kit - won't be going back over to the other side

Thanks for the info - think I know what to do now
Methinks you're not there yet. Since you've installed 10.5.6 and it works well, you're best bet to *make a copy, on disc - that I can use in future, to restore the "new" system, if need be* is to get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's faster than USB and designed for data transfer), and make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. In addition to a brody's backup link, see these for more details:

    Forget the Pendrive stategy...
Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Also, Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...

You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

  • I've bought Lion USB Thumb Drive, how to make a backup of it?

hi i've bought the Lion USB Thumb Drive because my internet connection is super super slow.
now, the Lion USB Thumb Drirve arrived is super small and fragile because it's a Mini-B type USB connector, with all the metal exposed.
So I try to make a backup copy of it onto another USB drive.
wondering anyone know how to do it?
all the internet resourse I can find only teach how to make a USB from the downloaded version, but I don't have the downloaded version, so the method taught doesn't work because there is no "InstallESD.dmg" inside it.
any solution will be greatly appreciated.
    many thanks in advance.

After you install Lion, use: Lion Recovery Disk Assistant
It's not the Install Disk, but it has the ability to Install Lion OS X
    You can also try:
Open up Disk Utility and Click on the "Restore" tab, choose the Apple Lion Install USB as the source and your flash drive as the destination. Hit the Apply button and it may create a bootable USB drive. (the flash drive must be formatted as GUID)

Sounds like you have an account, so two options I would say.
Try turning it off, then off and see what options you get, or sync your phone to iTunes and click on the summary and choose the iCloud option.

  • How to make a mass copy of all pictures from iphoto?

I bought new IMac and I have a lot o pictures in my old Imac. How to make a mass copy or transfer so files will sorted as they are in old IMac Iphoto?

Are the photos on the old iMac in iPhoto?  If so just connect the two Macs together and copy the iPhoto Library from the old iMac to the Pictures folder of the new iMac.
If you already have an iPhoto library with photos in it on your new iMac be sure to rename the old library to something else so it won't overwrite you new library.
If you want to merge the two libraries into one library either the latest verson of Aperture or the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager can be used.

  • How to make a safe copy of all mails or to export these?

Hello, I'n newbie on Mac OS X. I've been wondering how to make a safe copy of all mails in my inbox or to export all of them, like on Outlook with the function "Export". I don't find such function under MAIL. Can you please help me? Thanks
    Best regards.

    Hi
    Welcome to Mac Computing.
The folder holding your e-mail plus mailboxes etc. is located (via the Finder) in your User Account>Library>Mail folder. You can copy this folder to external media, such as another hard drive, or CD/DVD.
If you want to save specific e-mails, follow these directions from Mail's Help section (Help Menu):
    Exporting email messages:
You can save one or more messages as a separate file to archive messages or to import the contents into another application. You can open the saved message in TextEdit.
Open the message you want to export.
Choose File > Save As, and enter a name for the file.
Choose a location for the file from the Where pop-up menu.
Choose a format from the pop-up menu.
If you choose Rich Text Format, the text formatting of the message will be visible.
If you choose Plain Text, the colors, fonts, and other formatting will be lost.
If you choose Raw Message Source, the full delivery headers will be visible. If the message has attachments, you'll only see the encoded version of the attached files.

  • How do I make a  backup copy of purchased software ?

    Hi everybody :
I just purchased PhotoShop Elements 12 (Download).  How do I make a backup copy of this software ?  In the event of a System Crash.      I have a copy on my DeskTop and in my Startup Menu.

    Hi stanulg1952
You need not to make a copy .. In case your system crashes, you can download it again ....
Otherwise, You can write it on a optical Disc and use it in future ....But make sure you keep the Installation files on the disk, not the one which are there on your desktop after installtion

  • Bridge does not make a backup copy

    Evening
I was about to do a backup of my images and while I was looking at them, that although I had selected Bridge to make a backup copy and specified a directory it do not do that.
I have run many trials trying to get it to write a backup but it does't
When I start the download from my CF card I set the paramaters and options which in this case is simply rename to shot date and make a backup copy.
The progress window says it is copying the image it then switches to say it is making a backup copy. But yet that backup copy never appears.
I managed to get a bunch of screen snapshots and it appears Bridge is making a copy but it is simply writing it to the primary directory, same as the first copy so it is merely overwriting itself. I know this because when it says making Backup Copy it shows the destination directory which is the same as the first copy. I check the directory I specified for the backup and it says D:\images\raw but still puts them in C:\-----
Any ideas why Bridge is not placing a backup copy where I want it?

    Check your email.
I was hoping to learn something here.
I suspect that it does not matter whether IBA runs on a desktop or a laptop, but I don't know everything, and I was hoping that you might know something I don't and might be willing to share it. But, apparently not.
You're not capable of knowing if you are using a desktop or laptop?
That's a rather insulting question, don't you think? Instead of asking leading questions, why don't you just simply say "well, if it's a laptop, the problem might this whereas, if it's a desktop, the problem might be that"?
At any rate, my take on the situation is that it doesn't matter whether it's a laptop or a desktop. If you disagree, I'd love to hear why it might matter, and I'll be happy to stand corrected.
    Michi.

  • Dns-updater, how to make it stop :)

If I am not using DynDNS and do not wish to implement remote desktop or any other services dependent on dns-updater, how can I stop it from loading on start-up? How can I disable it?
Thanks for any help, Cheers, Vance.

Usually removing any related plist files from /Library/Startup Items (or /Library/LaunchDaemons, or /Library/LaunchAgents) and rebooting will do it.

  • Q: How to make complete backup of internal HD?

I want to upgrade to a bigger HD and want to make a backup of the full 80GB internal drive.
When using Disk Utility I can make images of folders but not of the internal HD.
I even can not make that image if I have booted from DVD or from external Firewire disk! Why?
I also cannot unmount the internal HD when booted from external HD or DVD.
    why?
How should I make a complete update (including all invisible files and folders)?

    ####### SUCCESS ###########
Thank you to all who provided valuable knowledge here.
From the many methods suggested above, I chose to try the CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I let CCC make an image of my internal HD onto my external HD. (Oddly enough this only works if you boot from the internal HD, or, better said, in order to use CCC you have to boot from the source HD, not destination HD, which IMHO would be saver, but then.)
Despite I logged in as admin I had to give the admin password for every top level folder, about 20 in my case, a bit tedious, because you can not go away but have to stay near the computer all the time while it is copying. It lastet 3 hours...
Then I booted from the Tiger DVD and verified that the image was mountable, and error free. Also the repair section of the disk utility allowed to specify the new image as source, and the internal HD as destination. So I was well prepared.
Today I got my new HD (yippie!!!! 120 GB in my PowerBook!!!!) and when back home I booted from DVD, started disk utility again, repair section, and set the CCC-image as source, the new internal disk as destination, and go!
After exactly one hour the block transfer was complete.
I rebooted with external disk and DVD removed.
But shock! The Mac did not find a system disk! Why this?
I rebooted from DVD, and set the internal disk explicitely as start volume.
Okay that was what was necessary, the next reboot from the internal new disk was successfull.
Thanks again for all the help.
(Just to be save I bought an external HD case for the old HD so if it had not worked this way I would have had still other options, like booting from the external HD and using CCC for directly moving the HD content to the new internal disk, but I am glad that the straightforward way just worked.)

  • How to make a backup without password

I have tried to create new backups, but every time as they are with a lock on. have deleted itunes on pc n without help. bought a new computer without help. my problem is that I have two girls who have switched phones, the mobile phone that owned the first desired content into the new. Now that it has acquired the old iphone ready and ruin the iphone and I wish to make a backup of it on the new iphone her but each time the backup is locked with a code. there is none of them have made some code!!!!!! only code code they have had is a code to open the phone. we have gone in between all the codes they have used but there is no acting. I've talked with apple suport on several occasions and they say that it is only making a backup without code.
So my question is how the **** do I do it?

You will have to delete ALL of your existing backups. Under preferences in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows), Devices, delet any and all backups that are listed. Connect your 3GS, right click in the device pane & select backup. You should be able to restore that backup to your iphone 4.

  • How to make a backup of a Premiere project?

Hi everyone, do you know how can I make a backup on a external hard drive of a Premiere Pro project with videos, music, text, videos linked with after effects??
or, since for the project, I took files from different folders and even from the desktop for example, do you know how to put all the files in a single folder without losing the properties of the project in premiere?
    thank you

thank you, but there is reported: "Project Manager does not collect and copy After Effects compositions that are dynamically linked to an Adobe Premiere Pro project. Project Manager does save the Dynamic Link clip in the trimmed project as an offline clip, however."
    so what can I do?
