10.5.6 Update killed my mac, recovery software?

The title says it all. I'm looking for some HFS compatible recovery software. I've been using GetDataBack NTFS and FAT32 for years on PC systems.
I ran the 10.5.6 update on Wednesday night, and right before it was suppose to restart my macbook just turned off. Now it turns itself off everytime I try to boot into OS X. I have bootcamp setup so I've been using XP to get things done. I have Paragon's MacDrive installed on the XP partition and when I went to look at my Macintosh HD it said "This drive is either damaged or corrupted". I connected an external HFS drive to it and XP could read it just fine. Now, I'm pretty sure it's physically ok (since bootcamp works just fine) but I'm really worried about the data being corrupted. I have my first two weeks of notes from school, a partially built website, and some audio projects on the drive. I REALLY need to retrieve that data before I wipe it and reinstall leopard. I have access to a SATA to USB adapter, but I need to know what recovery software I should try.
Any advice?

Hi Blueh1ro,
I'm sorry your first experience of the Discussions was not a good one, usually we do much better here. I can only think that the lack of response was, is, due to the fact that you posted on a Friday night and by the time most Mac users get out on bail Saturday morning your question was too blurry or too far buried down the list already. Also, people responding here generally do so because they think they might actually know the answer. That could tell you something right there. Indeed, I don't know the answer, I just felt good manners warranted a reply of some sort.
And then there are two other things, your subject line and hardware. Subject lines like that come out after every software update. I know, I've posted ones like that myself before I was beat over the head a few times. At least you've been spared the beating. The real veterans, the ones whose advice you really need, get tired of replying to subjects like that because what they say is always the same, "Well, you backed up your system before you updated, right? Just use that to get back to where you were before". When they hear, over and over, that people don't have back ups, or, now, are not using Time Machine, their eyes glaze over and they go back to bed for the day.
And lastly, your hardware, though this should be the least of the reasons. You're using an intel MacBook. Many here are using regular desktop towers and many of those are still G4s and G5s. The latter of those people you lose right away when they begin reading of bootcamp and xp. And in addition there are special Discussion pages for MacBook users only: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/
Now you said you wanted recovery software, but what you really want is recovery software that fixes directories and such before recovering it or ideally you just want something that will fix the disks directory as it lies. Well, here's where I'm not on solid ground at all but I've pushed your topic up so others can have a look see again and comment. Diskwarrior is excellent, but I'm not sure it can fix an OS upgrade gone awry. And I'm not sure also that boot problems mean your data is corrupt. I would just try to get it off of there on another disk and see what's there. That's probably ignorant in my thinking though, hopefully others will chime in. Good luck.

  • MacOS X 10.4.9 Update Killed My Mac!

Today I tried to install the 10.4.9 update.
Something went wrong when installing the update and I got an error message saying that the installation was unsuccessful.
After restart my mac got stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and a wheel spinning forever.
Fortunately I fixed the issue: http://net3x.blogspot.com/2007/03/macos-x-1049-update-killed-my-mac.html

Most likely, you could have avoided this problem if
you had followed Apple’s instructions for properly
    installing software updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software
    updates
Note that Apple doesn’t mention anywhere the need to
repair permissions either before or after installing
a system update, not even for troubleshooting system
update issues. It’s the disk itself (i.e. the
    filesystem) that should be verified/repaired
before installing anything. Note also that no
applications should be running while installing the
update and that you may experience unexpected results
if you have third-party system software modifications
    (not normal applications) installed.
I have to call complete and utter BS on this. I have been a mac user for more than 3 years. I have updated the day of almost every major update since 10.3.1 and 10.4.9 is by far the most problem prone thing I have ever seen apple put out. I have never once had a single issue where my mac would not boot after the install of an update. Now I have updated both my MacBook and Intel Mac Mini and both were dead in the water after the install. A different software suite is on both systems, and there is no "intrusive" 3rd party software that should cause any trouble. Thanks to the instructions above I was able to get back on-line and running 10.4.9, but something really needs to be done about these issues.

  • HT6114 Why has the 10.9.2 update killed my mac it loads up but then freezes trying to do anything!!!!!

Well after doing the 10.9.2 update last night my mac is now a piece of scrap. I can't get anything off it. It loads then freezes on trying to do anything can't even turn it off properly and was fine before!!!!

    Sysky wrote:
...safe mode as that is the only way it lets me do anything but even then it kept crashing and I had to try twice to get to App Store.
That's what I wanted to know. If it works in safe mode, which is what I asked, you have third-party software that is causing your problems. However, it doesn't look like it is fully defeated in safe mode, or something is damaged in the OS.
Uninstall everything you have the installs a startup item, launch daemon, or launch agent, or extension. If all works ok, install them one at a time. When it crashes, you've found the culprit.
EDIT: You may need to erase the drive and reinstall. You could likely restore your user data from your backup, but don't reinstall any utilities until you are ready to troubleshoot each one. Don't ever install anything that purports to clean, optimize, speed up, protect, or otherwise maintain your Mac. Those are the things that tend to cause the most problems.

This doesn't work for me. I know after I did the software update the same thing happened to me. I have a macbook pro 17". Non of my apple applications are working. (Safari, Xcode, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie... ) the list goes on. I went to the location you told me but I only found a Crash Reporter folder. I found the issue that occurred this morning when opening safari:

I have Windows 7 already loaded on it and the applications run fine. (At least the ones I tested) I noticed I still had the Snow Leopard upgrade DVD so I decided to do a clean wipe and finally update after the system directory failed to restore and the mac wouldn't boot anymore. It looked to have a fresh install of the OSX OS on the DVD, but I can't confirm. I was hopeful, but shortly after I selected the MAC OSX partition and re-ran the install I received a similar "Install Failed" error message stating to contact the manufacturer to resolve the issue. If you're still convinced this is software feel free point me in the right direction. Last I checked if wiping the OS on a system fails, you either have a really bad virus or it's hardware failure. Then again, I could be wrong, you seem to have a better view on this than me, after all I am a noob to the mac world.

  • Software update killed my Mac!

I was prompted to do a software update, and I installed itunes 7.02, some java stuff and I think a backup. I don't remember exactly what it was.
    Anyway,
After update I needed to restart my computer. Now when it starts up it goes up through the start up, through the blue screen where the bar scrolls through. And then when it should show my desktop....nothing.
I have a cursor arrow, but nothing to point to. Just a blue screen.
What happened? How do I fix this?

It is a good idea to start Disk Utility and repair disk permissions, verify the disk, and make a backup copy of your boot drive before you install any OS or software updates.
Chances are, this problem is a coincidence though. Can you boot off the disc that came with your Mac? If so, try running the repair disk feature in Disk Utility to see if that fixes the problem.

  • Security Update killed my mac??

Ok, I ran the update last night that was pushed down, which include a security update I believe. Afterwards, it took many times to get my Mac to even boot up and then Mail would not work, just kept closing and my sound for everything is gone.
I went thru the forums and resurrected my Mail, but my sound is still gone. I have tried all the basic stuff, like mute, power, check cords, etc.
Anyone run into this issue or just know how to fix it?
Please make my screen flash if you respond, since I won't hear you otherwise (gotta keep some humor right?)
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the star
There's no harm in verifying the disk with Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) or repairing permissions before doing the update, make sure you repair permissions after it though. Make sure you do the v1.1 Combo Update, here's the link:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10410comboupdat ev11intel.html (presuming you're Intel)
What about System Preferences>Sound, anything in there that could be the problem?

  • Mooing update killed my mac!?!?!??!?!!??!??!?!?!?!?!?!

    Hi all!
I am "%"+/ annoyed right now...just got my macbook 2.0 Ghz back from service (discoloration fix and a new motherboard) and its already died on me. I suspect it may have something to do with the new motherboard, because I noticed that annyoing mooing noise I'd read about but luckily never encountered. I did a quick search and installed this:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbooksmcfirmwareupdate.html
Now the computer won't start up. Gives the TaDa sound and the screen stays grey, no apple, nothing. I've tried starting up with the osx dvd in it, but nothing. Please help before I go crazy and give it to my dog to play with.

If you really have given up hope of restoring any data on the drive the best thing to do is completely erase the drive and start the install again.
To ensure you have erased completely boot from the install CD, then using the menu options (at the top of the screen) run Disk Utility, click on the Erase tab, then on Security options. Zero all data.
Now try the install again, if you can from a Tiger install disk rather than a grey disk.
    Hope this helps

  • Recovery software to recover Quicken data files

Need advice on what recovery software to purchase to recover deleted Quicken data files (.qdf).  Have tried Disk Drill, but this software doesn't support this file extension.

BTW I believe that you can download a demo of Data Rescue 4, and the demo will give you an idea of what it can recover. If it looks promising, you then can buy the software.

  • Mac app store driver update killed my printing

    Printer:  Envy100 (D410)
    OS:  Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8.2)
Printer was working fine prior to this morning when I was notified that there was an update via the app store.  I installed the driver update and now all HP software will not see the printer.  I have done the following:
    *  Downloaded latest software from HP and re-installed - no change, cannot see printer
    *  Uninstalled HP Printer software, rebooted, re-installed latest version - no change, cannot see printer
    *  Added the printer first via System Preferences-->Print  & Scan (no problem there) then tried to use the HP Utility to see the printer - no change, cannot see printer
    *  Tried to set up the printer manually using IP address - still does not see the printer
All of this was working fine yesterday.  I am now without the ability to print, other than by email using hpeprint.com.
I don't know how to remove the latest update that hosed me.  Please help.
Edit:  I should also note that all the PCs in my house have no issues.  Nothing changed on the printer itself, the only thing that changes is the driver software on my mac.
    This question was solved.

    Ok,
Reboot the router by unplugging it for 30 sexonds, then try following the HP Setup Assistant again.
If it still fails to locate the printer please let me know your router brand and model.
I now tested the Envy 100 using the latest HP Printer Drivers 2.12 and were able to print with no issues..

  • Updating your older Mac Pro for a few more years of good use...

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my tips for getting your aging Mac Pro running better for Mavericks and the FCPX 10.1.
Please note your Mac Pro's specs before doing what did..I am an editor and use the 3 big A's to get my work done. Adobe, Apple, Avid (not so much Avid)
I got a great deal on it for only $1300. I did a bunch of research and decided my upgrade options were best for my machine and the way I use it so your upgrade options my differ slightly. (do your research!!!)
I have 2009 Nehelem Mac Pro 2x 2.66 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon.  Installed was 6GBs of factory RAM, an upgraded ATI 512 GPU, and 1,  1TB WD Black system drive. (this was a nice upgrade compared to my 4 core Mac Pro)
I was running 10.8 and all my apps were installed and running. I installed 3 more 7200rpm drives to fill the drive bays. Momentus XT's 2TB each.
(I upgraded to Mavericks, as  you know it overwirtes the old OS, I wanted the new FCPX...) more on this later.
    1- RAM,
I removed the puny 6GBs of RAM it came with and installed 32GBs of 1066 Mhz DDR3 from OWC. I decided 32 would be enough for my needs looking into the App requirments and of course the cost. I noticed a slight difference in some performance. (to my dissapointment) fcpx beachballs!!
However now you will have more RAM to allocate RAM for programs that can read it. After Effects anyone...
    link- http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory#1066-memory
    2-GPU,
I had a 5770 sitting in the closet, and put that in and bascilly it sucked!   I never like the 5770.  fcpx beachballs!!
I contacted apple they informed me FCPX is written for GPUs and that a large card (while they didnt suppport it at the time) would be the best upgrade to better performance. So I installed the AMD Sappire 7950 3GB GPU from OWC. This is a monster card! and right away I noticed a huge difference in the perfromace of FCPX and AE! Not only that but the card supports up to 2K I believe... and is a great price... and for you gear heads it looks bad *** and the fan is super quiet!
    less fcpx beachballs
    link-http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sapphire/100352MAC/
    3- Hardrive,
Ok so now I'm thinking my machine is a beast! I have all this RAM and a huge GPU and the top ESATA drives you can buy, butI was still getting beachballs and FCPX was painfully slow at times..needless to say I felt Apple backing my in a corner to drink more coolaid a get the new small round black can...What to do???
As I mentioned before I did not do a clean install....Most folks dont like going through the pain of 2 days to do a clean install but I knew deep down it would have ot be done. Before I did that I decided to do some research on those new SSD cards everyone is raging about. Remeber your Mac Pro's bus speed is only so big...remember this when doing this last and most important upgrade!!
The market has all kinds of SSD drives for sale and OWC has a PCIe option (too much money for me) they have 3G drives 6G drives and so on. I could be wrong but buying a more expensive 6G card is a waste of money with bus speed of the Nehelem (this my differ with Westmere) I bought an of the self Kingston Hyper X 120GB (get at least 240GB if you can) and the OWC Mac Pro Drive Sled.
This by far was the best upgrade! Before installation please go through the pain of the clean install...For Mavericks you need to create a bootable drive on a USB stick first. You then need to monut SSD in an empty enclosure in order to get it to mount for the OS to be installed

    PCIe Expansions
    H.264 Encoding-
Matrox Compress HD PCIe card, This card is amazing however it does not support Compressor 4.1 but it does support legecy Compressor 3 and I did successfully install both Apps in Mavericks. (You must hide legecy versions in a folder in applications)
ESATA CARD-  4 Port 6G Caldigit esata card.
USB 3.0- Newertech 2 port USB3.0 Mac Pro Card. I dont recommend buying this card. Mac Pro Nehelem, was not made for USB3.0 and the drives I plug into it rarely mount...if ever mount... restart...when they do its a little faster than firewire and close to my Esata options. Dont bother....
I have setup my drive structure as follow.
Drive Bay 1 All System Apps run on the SSD drive.
Drive bay 2 hold the contents of all the Media for my projects.
Drive bay 3 hold all the AutoSaves and the FCPX Libaries and daily Project backups and renders.
Drive bay 4 Is Special Effects drive.
Dual Samsung 27 inch HD displays
    M_Audio Monitors
    1-3TB Caldigit RAID
12-TBs of drives attached to every port on the back.
2_USB docking ports voyager s3 for archive drives.
Now that I have all these upgrades, a clean install, fresh updates to my softwares, my Mac Pro runs better that ever! My boot ups time is twice as fast as before and my OS is very snappy...Oh yeah FCPX, After Effects, Boris RED, Mail, Safari all open at the same time a running brilliantly!
Many of us are not ready to upgrade to the new Mac Pro, and as we all know the legecy Mac Pro was built like a tank with military grade proccessors and endless upgrade options. It wont ever be as fast as that new black can but I know I will be working faster with my trusty Mac!
    Good luck!

  • After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file.

After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file. HELP!!!

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • IMac Early 2011 - 10.6.7 update kills system

I've read similar threads, but here is my more specific issue, the 10.6.7 update complete screws up a brand new iMac running 10.6.6
Brand new 2011 21.5" 2.7Ghz iMac running 10.6.6 from the box, just opened and set-up for first time and ran software update chosing the 10.6.7 update and a couple of others which are suggested (Safari, iTunes etc).
Download updates, then after requesting a restart the system just hangs with the spinning beachball (doesn't restart, stays on desktop background forever).
Force power off and restart. System won't boot, hangs at the Apple logo screen. A safe boot again hangs at similar point (even waited 60 mins in one case just to make sure, but no disk activity can be heard), verbose boot shows the last successful item is: "[ffffff800c78300][AppleMultitouchDevice::start] entered" which isn't that helpful to me...
Boot to Install DVD (mouse and keyboard work fine), HD verifies ok, repaired permissions (only faults appear in Library > Updates), try to reboot, again still hangs. Tried every trick I know, but now going to attempt a reinstall from scratch, half a day wasted so far...
Very unimpressed that a recommended system update can brick a brand new Mac.
So is the 10.6.7 update officially faulty on these new iMacs, if I download the update package from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1383  (specific to early 2011 iMac, rather than combo updater), will it still fail? I don't want to waste yet more time on re-installs, unless I can bill Apple my hourly rate

Actually in the first 3 months your Apple service is free.  Call AppleCare.
    >"[ffffff800c78300][AppleMultitouchDevice::start] entered"
A mouse or trackpad that is faulty could yield errors with that.  It would be interesting to see if you can remove all but the Apple keyboard from the equation and it boot.  If it does, then your input device is faulty, not the entire machine, or the update.
Some iMacs of that age got a graphics update, but not sure if it applies to you:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1389
No operating system update can kill a Mac.  The Mac may already have something else marginal about it that needs fixing.  Also is your data backed up?

I can't Install my updates on my mac book , it starts to install and a box pops up saying i don't have permission to install

    Have you tried:

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Also, please check the settings on your startup drive. Select it. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window, then open the bottom-most panel and check the settings. They should look like this:

  • Kernel updates kill my luks encrypted system

All right, this is weird. I have a 64bit system with encrypted root, home and  swap partitions. To setup I followed the wiki here:

My swap is encrypted like described here:

Since the updates to kernel 3.1 each new kernel update kills my system. Pacman says while upgrading

    [2011-11-08 08:21] ==> Image generation successful
So the generation of the initramfs seems to be ok.
But when I reboot this box, I get:
    running hook [openswap]
device /dev/sda4 doesn't exist or access denied
    running hook [resume]
waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/swapDevice
waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/root
root device /dev/mapper/root doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: unable to determine major/minor number of root device /dev/mapper/root
/dev/sda4 is my swap partition. Then I get dropped to a recovery shell which I can't use because my (usb) keyboard is not working.
Now the funny part. I start the box from a install cd and chroot into the existing installation. I do a
    mkinitcpio -p linux
The initramfs is regenerated and it works again! What the hell is pacman doing other than regenerate the initramfs with my presets?

New kernel 3.1.1 did it again. My system hangs in initramfs after the reboot. Same as before: a simple rebuild without any changes fixed the boot process. This time I was able to backup the 'bad' initramfs before chrooting in and rebuilding.
it is very funny to see the content of the 'bad' initramfs image - it is nearly empty!

For some reason the initramfs built by pacman is missing all modules. To say it again, nothing changed, simple rebuilt by mkinitcpio -p linux!
This seems to be a bad bug...

  • Flash updates kills sound

I have a Mac 10.6.8 which on the last Adobe Flash update killed my sound.
I know nothing of computers - it is a glorified typewriter to me, so please advise how to remedy this in simple terms.
Technical terms are the death for me!

    Hi,
Could you please let us know some more details?
Please go to the following page and let us know the Flash Player version and browser you use: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html#main_Find_the_Flash_ Player_version_installed_on_your_machine
Do you mean to say you don't hear any sound at all?
    Thanks,
    Sunil
