10.5.6 update + Managed Client + MS Office

This is a description of what I have found that works when managing clients using Workgroup Manager on a Leopard Server. Maybe it will help others with a similar issue.
The problem:
When users log into the Leopard server with network home directories and work on MS Word (2004) log out, their workstations (also running Leopard - 10.5.6) display the kernel panic, and have to be restarted.
Note:
The same machines logging into the same Leopard server do not go into KP when users log out after using AppleWorks.
The solution:
Archive and install the workstations back to 10.5.5 - problem is completely solved - no KP's after 95 student logouts after working on MS Word.
I don't know what the explanation is, and I'm too busy with teaching classes to do more investigation, but maybe someone else can add to this thread, possibly with other, better solutions.
Cheers,
Peter

Will do, although I did send the reports (from each machine) to Apple when asked after the reboot - would this contain the same information?

  • Vmware vsphere update manager client 5.1 update 3 fails to install

    Hi guys,
I tried to install VMware vSphere update manager client 5.1 update 3 to upgrade the old client (5.1 update 2) and keep failing without any visible error. I notice that right after start installing sun java runtime environment  the installation fail and the rolling back process start and abort the installation. Did any of you have experience this before? if yes what is the solution.
    vCenter 5.1 update 3 Build 2306353
    ESXi 5.1.0,2191751
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Had the same problem.
Seems to be no solution apart from uninstalling 5.1 U2, then installing 5.1 U3. (worked for me)
It's the same problem as this KB: KB2092290, which remains unresolved.

  • Update Manager Setup Wizard

    Dear all,
we have installed the Update Manager Client S/W 1.0.10 (ie Patch 121119-16)
on our x86 system running Solaris 10 5/08.
From the Sun Java Desktop System Launch menu, we choose Applications/ Utilities/Update Manager
to start the tool. But after the authentication process (root/PW) the Update Manager is saying:
Setup Wizard Error - Setup Wizard is not installed
    How can this be installed?
    THX, Rainer

I, too, am having this problem with a recently installed instance of Solaris 10 10/09. I recently installed the system and custom removed a few packages from the Entire Group. However, it looks like we removed too many packages and it broke the updatemanager. I've attempted to install the SUNWccc* and ccf* packages to no avail. It'd be nice to know which particular package that wizard belongs to.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Ramakrushna Parupalli

    Hi Ramakrushna,
For the situation, you can connect to the database of Release Management, and check whether you can execute stored procedure ReleaseV2_List manually.
You can also try to clean some of releases records if possible to check if the timeout issue can be resolved. Or you can set the timeout configuration of Release Management to a larger value. Refer to this
    thread for more information.
Another option is check event logs to see if there any useful informaiton, and repair Release Management on your server machine if possible. If the problem still exist after taking the methods I mentioned above, please elaborate more details about your scenario.

  • Office 2013 SP1 update on client no longer allows connection to Office Telemetry Database

I have just updated my machine with Office 2013 SP1 and have found that I can no longer connect to the Office Telemetry Database. It fails with a Database Connection Failure. The database needs to be updated.
I can connect fine from the server locally so just wondering if someone can confirm that the telemetry server needs updated to SP1 before it will allow my machine to connect?
    Thanks

    Hi,
We haven't heard such report after Office 2013 SP1 released. We will monitor on this problem and we will let you know if we found that the problem was caused by SP1. Meanwhile, we can try to uninstall SP1 to see if the problem persists.

Issue 2: I'm trying to deploy a couple of Packages/Applications using SCCM 2012 R2 running on Win2K8 R2 with no luck, knowing that I could install the packages
on a test VM “in the DataCenter site”, but when trying to deploy the packages to production PC “in the Office Site”,
the status is packages deployment compliance stuck at 0%
    Infrastructure:
3 SCCM servers: CAS, PRI & SEC. Both CAS and PRI are in the DataCenter site, and SEC is in the Office site. The office site has several IP subnets.
Boundaries are configured through Forest Discovery “IP Ranges and AD Sites” since that the AD site should contain all the IP subnets that the AD site contains, Boundaries groups are also configured and a site reference
server is configured for each group respectively.
A OU based Collection has been configured that contains 13 PC "the collection contains the PCs that the packages should be installed.
Packages/Applications are configured correctly since that I could successfully deploy the packages to the test VM which is on the same subnet as the CAS and the PRI servers "the DataCenter subnet". The issue
is that I can't deploy the packages to production PCs in the Office subnet!
Firewall rules are configured and applied via GP, and I even turned Windows Firewall off, and still nothing! I tried to manually initiate Computer Policy download via the SCCM GUI and via a script, still no luck!
I tried configuring IP Subnet Boundaries, still no luck!!

  • WSUS updates not applying to Office 2013 Home and Business OEM version

    Hi
For some reason I cannot get WSUS updates to automatically install on clients running Office 2013 Home and Business OEM version.
    For example
If user opens any of the office 2013 apps e.g. Outlook , word etc, it prompts a message at the top under the ribbon toolbar; UPDATE NOW.
All other updates for OS are downloading and installing just fine from our WSUS server.
    What could this be?
I dont have this issue with clients running office 2003

First thing you need to do is be absolutely certain which edition of Office you have installed.
There are five editions of "Office 365" and these days, almost anything that is "OEM" is almost certainly Office 365:
    Office 365 Home
    Office 365 Personal
    Office 365 Small Business
    Office 365 Small Business Premium
    Office 365 Midsize Business
Office 365 ships with an activation code for an online management account, and authorizes the installation of the software on up to five devices. Office 365 is updated via the WEB .. ONLY.
In addition there are three editions of Office 2013:
    Office Home & Student
    Office Home & Business
    Office Professional
If you have one of these three editions, you should also have a DVD and a Product Activation Code for the SINGLE-PC installation which is licensed for these editions provided by the vendor of your computers. Office 2013 can be updated using WSUS.
Since you're getting a prompt IN THE APPLICATION to "Update Now", I believe you're looking at instances of Office 365, not Office 2013. Office 2013 (desktop) does not provide in-product prompts for updates/upgrades.

  • Error "A web exception has occurred during file upload" when trying to import ESXi image file into Update Manager

I'm encountering this error and not sure how to fix, I'm quite new to vCenter so please bear with me.
I'm trying out vCenter 5.1 with Update Manager 5.1 right now.  No license key has been entered and I still have 50 odd days to try it out.
2 ESXi hosts are being managed by this vCenter, and they're both running ESXi 4.0
I'm looking to use Update Manager to try to upgrade the ESXi 4.0 hosts to ESXi 5.1
I downloaded the image file VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.1.0-799735.iso from VMWare website, and is looking to import it using the Update Manager so I can update the ESXi hosts, but I keep on getting the error:
    File name:     VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.1.0-799735.iso
    Failed to transfer data
Error was: A web exception has occurred during file upload
I tried importing it by using vSphere client to connect to vCenter server both remotely and locally, with firewall disabled.
    I've read http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026602
I've disabled firewall, and there is no anti-virus program on the server.  I've also restarted the machine several times, to no avail, I didn't reinstall update manager because the whole Windows and VCenter installations are clean from scratch.
I logged into the vSphere Client using Active Directory credentials, and I've made all Domain Admins (which my account is a member of) part of the administrator group on the vCenter server. I can't log in using admin@System-Domain because it tells me I don't have permissions for it, I still haven't really had the chance to figure out why that is and not sure if that makes a difference.
Also, I'm fairly certain I'm using the right image file, as I've burned some DVD's used that image file to upgrade some other ESXi hosts.  Unless there's a special image file I need to download?
I'm at lost on what I can do to make it work.  Please advise.
    Thanks.

The ISO file you mentioned is the one for vCenter Server. What you need is the "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0-799733.x86_64.iso" (or VMware-VMvisor-Installer-201210001-838463.x86_64.iso) for the ESXi host.

  • Remote Update Manager with AAMEE 2.1 deployments.

    Hi,
I've noticed the AAMEE 3.1 Beta has some new options that integrate with Remote Update Manager and CS6 installation packages, that allows you disable updates, but still run them with Remote Update Manager.  If I've deployed and Adobe CS5.5 package built with AAMEE 2.1, with the ability to install updates disabled, will I still be able to use Remote Update Manager to install updates to those deployments?  Or will I need to continue to deploy them manually?  If I want to deploy CS5.5 and use Remote Update Manager for updates, what settings should I be using in AAMEE 2.1 when I build my packages?
    Thanks,
    ~Ted

    Hi Ted,
RUM can also be used with CS5 & CS5.5 and by the sounds of it would fit in with your current configuration very well. If user's are non admins or you do not want each client pulling in there updates automatically then we would suggest turning off client updates in AAMEE and then using RUM.
Have you looked at setting up AUSST in your environment ? it is great to use in conjunction with RUM but you can of course just use RUM if you prefer.
    Cheers

  • Remote Update Manager doesn't recognize applicable updates

    Hi,
We have a script scheduled to run Remote Update Manager on one of our client machines. This machine is currently running OSX 10.8.5 and Adobe Creative Cloud. When looking at Creative Cloud directly, we can clearly see that there are updates available for our Adobe products. Remote Update Manager, however, does not recognize these updates and will therefore not automatically update. This prevents the user from working as they do not have access to administrative credentials used to update these applications.
I have included an example of the returned messages by Remote Update Manager. These logs are pulled as of this morning but, as you can see, still reflect an outdated entry of 10/17/13.

  • Remote Update Manager - Acrobat Pro

    Hello everyone,
Please review this snippit from the Remote Update Manager (RUM) documentation.
Note: Remote Update Manager is meant only for a subsection of Adobe Desktop products. It can not be used for browser plug-ins such as Flash Player and for Adobe Reader, Acrobat Professional, and Adobe AIR application updates.
    I ask the question... WHY?
Why, at the very least isn't Acrobat Pro part of the Adobe Update Server Setup Tool (AUSST) and RUM configuration?
I've finally gotten my Adobe udate server working and created a Scheduled Task to run the incremental update everyday. Perfect.
Now I'm implementing the override files on my client machines and creating a Scheduled Tasks to run the RemoteUpdateManager so that my users (as well as myself) do not have to worry about updating the Adobe programs... BUT... one of the programs that we use quite a bit, Acrobat Pro, is not part of this automated update scenario.
So, I'm left still updating Acrobat manually which almost, but not quite, defeats the purpose of AUSST & RUM.
Can anyone from Adobe tell me whether there are plans to add Acrobat Pro to the automated updating procedure mentioned above?
    Please say yes.
I'm so close to being at the point where the Adobe updates are completely automated. Adding Acrobat Pro to the list would be like hitting a grand slam in the 9th inning to win the game.
    Thanks in advance.

Markus, thank you for the information.
First, If Acrobat is not a creative product then it shouldn't be offered in the CC collection of programs.
Second, Things being the way they are - Acrobat being deployable with the CC programs - it should be updated the same way as the CC programs. It would just make it nice and tidy and dare I say efficient.
I will check out the link to the tools. Great, more software to download, install and configure.

  • Unable to generate Bean Managed Client project

    Hello,
I am using JDeveloper 9.0.3 Production (build 1035).
For each of our Business Components projects, we create a deployment profile - BC EJB Session Bean, Session Facade (BMT).
Because of the way our application is organized, the default folder proposed for the BMC (Bean Managed Client) project is not suitable.
As it is not possible to modify the BMC project folder or name once generated (maybe here is a slight problem?), we decided to find a different modus operandi to get the same final result.
But, it seems that the only way to create the BMC project is from the very beginning, when the deployment profile is created, and with the default names generated by JDeveloper.
    Maybe I am missing something.
Here are the steps I perform:
    1. Specify an Application Server Connection (Standalone OC4J) to our development OC4J server.
    2. For the BC project, create a Deployment Profile / Business Components EJB Session Bean.
    3. For this deployment profile, choose to deploy to Oracle 9iAS EJB Container, using the previously created connection.
    4. In the AppModules section of the profile, carefully reset the option "Create AppModule Configurations" after having selected the one AppModule defined in the BC project.
    5. In the properties of our AppModule, in the Remote section, I activate now the option "Remotable Application Module" and I select Session Facade (BMT) configuration.
    6. In the Target Platform section, I update the Client Project entry to fit our project's organization and press OK.
    7. I return to the deployment profile settings and set the option "Create AppModule Configurations".
For my surprise, at this moment the BMC project is not created. Nor if I compile the BC project, or modify again the AppModule, or the configurations, or the deployment profile...
I even tried to quit JDeveloper, re-enter and re-do the same attempts, but useless...
Is there a way to create the BMC project for a BMT Session Facade configuration after having created the deployment profile?
    TIA,
    Adrian

Sorry, I think I over-reacted. In fact, the only real problem I have is that I cannot move the BMC project from the default project to another.
I already have some projects for my application (which I tested until now in local config) and I want now to make them remotable. The problem with the project that did not want to create the BMC-pair was that it had nothing to remote - no exposed method, nor for AM, nor for VO's ;o)
For a project that already has some remotable methods, the steps to perform are very strict when you want to make it remotable. You are right, if I first make my AM remotable and properly define there the path and name for the client project, I get the good results.
But, even in this case, I did not see any integrated way of moving this project (completely generated by JDev) to another folder. What I do is modify the project in the configuration properties, quit JDev and move the folder manually.
    Thank you,
    Adrian

  • Unable to copy hidden package "Configuration Manager Client Package" to local DP

Content status lists it as successfully distributed to all DPs (including the local site server)
However, component status for SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER continually logs these events:
Distribution Manager failed to process package "Configuration Manager Client Package" (package ID = CDW00001).
Possible cause: Distribution manager does not have access to either the package source directory or the distribution point.
Solution: Verify that distribution manager can access the package source directory/distribution point.
Possible cause: The package source directory contains files with long file names and the total length of the path exceeds the maximum length supported by the operating system.
Solution: Reduce the number of folders defined for the package, shorten the filename, or consider bundling the files using a compression utility.
Possible cause: There is not enough disk space available on the site server computer or the distribution point.
Solution: Verify that there is enough free disk space available on the site server computer and on the distribution point.
Possible cause: The package source directory contains files that might be in use by an active process.
Solution: Close any processes that maybe using files in the source directory. If this failure persists, create an alternate copy of the source directory and update the package source to point to it.
NOTE: It appears to not be any of these causes.

Both errors are certificate related. Is there anything special about your configuration such as special ACLs on the certificate store or FIPS compliance mode (see
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811833) being enabled?
Nothing special with certificates; I've used the basic stuff for intranet management of clients.
The only related thing I can think of that may have affected this, is that I discovered earlier today that my MP installation got hosed (error 500) due to a broken client install on the site server itself. I uninstalled the client manually and the server
(as indicated by the component status views) appears to have repaired the MP install. Perhaps it didn't repair it completely? Would a site reset do me any good?

It started working fine after following below :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852349.aspx
The WSUS server identity on the destination server must be changed. Performing this step guarantees that WSUS-managed clients are not affected during the migration process. If the source server and
the destination server run with the same identity, and a change is made to one of the servers, the communication between the client and server will fail.
    To change the WSUS
    server identity
On the destination server, open a Windows PowerShell session with elevated user rights and run the following script:
    $updateServer = get-wsusserver
    $config = $updateServer.GetConfiguration()
    $config.ServerId = [System.Guid]::NewGuid()
    $config.Save()
As soon as the server identity is changed, run the following command to generate a new encryption key:
    %ProgramFiles%\Update Services\Tools\wsusutil.exe
    postinstall
    And its done. :)

  • Solaris 10 x86 Update Manager & smpatch errors

I've recently installed Solaris 10 on two x86 machines and, even after installing patch 121119-15, I'm having Update Manager and smpatch issues. It appears to be due to certificate troubles.
I've followed several sets of instructions (including cacaoadm stop/start and registration) and nothing has seemed to work.
    I have successfully connected to:
    # telnet sun.com 80
    # telnet cns-services.sun.com 443
    # telnet getupdates1.sun.com 443
    # telnet a248.e.akamai.net 443
    I have also tried:
    # cacaoadm stop
    # cacaoadm status
    # /usr/lib/cc-ccr/bin/eraseCCRRepository
    # rm /var/scn/persistence/SCN*
    # cacaoadm start
    Reregistering didn't change anything.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

I added patch 121082-08 and 123896-10 and modified the entries in /usr/sbin/pprosvc and /usr/bin/updatemanager.
I am now unable to register the system using the Registration Wizard or sconadm (Invalid Sun Online credentials which I know are correct).
Also, smpatch analyze exits with a timeout.
