10.5.6 upgrade, 4GB memory, fails on boot, works if pull either chip.

After the update of 10.5.6, getting 2 beeps, then 3 beeps after that, searching posts, mentioned bad memory. My 2.4GHx 24" iMac system with 2 memory chips for total of 4GB, which is the max for this system, (purchased from Other World Computing last april) If I pull either one of the of the memory, it will boot ok. So what happened that it will not work with 2 memory chips. It's been running fine since I purchased the iMac new and installed the 2 chips back in April of 2008. Did the 10.5.6 update and now it does not work! I don't have 2 smaller memories to try, to try see if it's a question of using 2 slots, or if it had to do with 4GB size.

Well it turns out I have a bad memory stick. Sure was odd that it failed after I did the update. I'll blame it on Sun Spots. Ran the Apple hardware test, error, 4MEM/4/40000000:3ea542f8. On my machine the diagnostics were already loaded, just had to press the "d" key on boot to access the diagnostics. During my troubleshooting I also discovered that the system would boot if I reversed the memory between the slots, but I'm not running it with a bad memory. Called Other World Computing and they are send me out a matched pair of 2GB memory sticks for exchange. Apple was quick on answering the phone, was talking with a support person within a few seconds of dialing the number.

  • Upgrade 4GB memory to 16GB

Hi there, I hope someone can help me on this.
I was thinking of upgrading my current memory of 4GB (2GB x 2) to 16GB (8GB x 2) from Crucial memory or OWC. The total costs for two 8GB is about US$180. Can I ask if this upgrade to 16GB would affect the performance of my MBP or the OS Mountain Lion? From Crucial website, they didn't say my computer could be upgraded to 16GB, but they do sell 16GB memory for my hardware.
Can someone please advise on this? I don't want to get two 8GB and realize they have performance issues.
Thank you very much in advance for helping.
    Nick.

your performance will only increase if your applications need more ram.
mountain lion does perform better with more ram...
$180 is a little on the high side but still reasonable..

  • MS-9130 K8T Master 2 FAR BIOS w/4GB Memory Remapping

    Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has been running a stable release BIOS (not beta) on the 9130 that resolves the memory re-mapping issue for those of us with 4GB of RAM?
My system is very stable with both 32bit and 64bit XP Versions, but I'd like to make full use of my installed RAM if possible. There has been a lot of dialog about this in past months and a new BIOS was supposed to be in the works, but V1.35 is still the latest version on the MSI site and doesn't resolve the memory map issue. V1.47 posted in the BIOS thread is still beta and as best as I can tell isn't completely stable.
Have I missed any new developments or releases?
Any advice or assistance is appreciated...
    Thanks!
    Richard

    That bios has the function....
    Hi Bas,
Thanks for your reply. I know you said in that thread that the 1.47 Bios has the memory mapping function, but there are also many warnings about the fact that this version is not necessarily ready for use beyond testing. Also, nobody confirmed that the 4GB memory mapping was actually working.
Some of your cautions in that BIOS thread included:

    Hi guy's,
I hereby post the latest MS-9130, I have tested this and for me it worked and was stable.
Beware, this beta is more alpha then beta, but stable.
This BIOS has quirks, do not use or flash it on a production machine or complaint that it does have problems
It's entirely your own fault if something happens as YOU decided to help testing[/color]
    <snip>
    A couple of remarks:
When you download this BIOS, you confirm you did know this is a testing-bios, not a bugg-free one.
    <snip>
As I said, this is test-BIOS, not to use if you don't wan't to help testing, nor the forum or MSI is responsible if something does go wrong!
Have there been additional improvements made since you gave those cautions about the Version 1.47 Bios?
Do you think it's safe to use that version now on a production system?
Thanks, Bas! As always, your assistance is greatly appreciated

  • 110-421na 4GB memory upgrade

I wish to upgrade the memory in my desktop 110-421na from 4GB to 8GB.  With an unused memory slot I assumed this to be possible.  I fitted a Crucial  4GB  DDR3 1600  SODIMM 1.35v  CL1. The system failed to start.  When I removed the additional 4GB - it started OK.  Any advice, please?

Not knowing the specific model you have, it seems two types of memory are available through the HP memory finder (at right of HP parts website here
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 64Meg x 64 • This for HDX 18
    DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 64 • This for HDX 18T
You can find your model number (on the sticker on the back/bottom of your laptop) and call HP (US) at  1 (888) 999-4747 English/Español

  • 4GB memory upgrade on Satellite A200-23W

    Hi,
I asked toshiba service here in greece about upgrading the memory that my A200 23W has and they told me to buy a 2gb memory module (I saw than that there was no need for 2 as there was only one module on it but anyway...).
I did so and installed the new memory but since that in System information i can only see this:
OS Name Microsoft® Windows Vista Home Premium
    Version 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001

    Available Physical Memory 2,01 GB
    Total Virtual Memory 6,19 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 5,12 GB
    Page File Space 3,29 GB
So my question is WHY AVAILABLE PHYSICAL MEMORY IS STILL 2.01 GB? when i have installed 4GB and the system can see that only in theory.

There is nothing wrong with your system. As you already posted, windows shows your total amount of 4GB physical memory and the total physical memory of 3GB.
The part with the available memory is a windows thing and shows how much memory is left for other programs, because windows needs some of it your its own.
So, if you want to use the full amount of your 4GB you will have to use a 64bit version of Vista, because 32bit versions are limited to a maximum size of 3,29GB as your page file space already indicates.
Hope this cleared some things now.

You need to purchase 8 GBs as two 4 GB modules. Must meet these requirments:
    Maximum Memory
    8.0 GB
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

No.  Installing RAM doesn't make a computer faster.

Sure, but why pay for that when you can do it yourself.

Have you checked activity monitor to see if any apps or processes are takin up a large percentage of the CPU?

Hi, I have a refurbished upgraded macbook with 320 GB Disk, 4GB Memory and running Lion OS v 10.7.5.  This satisfies the second part of the requirement for installing OS X Mavericks (10.9) but happens to be an early 2008 piece.  Can I somehow install 10.9?  And why is apple not allowing people like me to try out this installation?  Any reason that are too technical that people like me cannot upgrade and handle?
This would solve many apps to run on this.

It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks require 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks no longer support Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion and Mavericks are pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

About the only thing that "might" be able to do is upgrade the SSD. OWC sells SSD upgrades for that unit. You would have to contact Apple though to verify that no warranty issues would apply when making the upgrade.

  • Upgrade from OS X 10.6.8 to X Yosemite with 4GB memory, 2.26 GHz

Can a MacBook Pro that has OS X 10.6.8, 4GB memory, 2.26 GHz intel Core 2 Duo able to upgrade to X Yosemite and still run Word/Excel/PPT 12.3.6 without a problem?  From previous posts I'm not sure I have enough memory.
    Thanks!

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • Just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and Intel Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and Quicktime plays m4v files with stuttering audio

I just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and 3.33 Ghz  Intel Core Duo Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.  I now have Quicktime 10.3 which plays m4v files with stuttering audio.  This is a nightmare as I use Quicktime a lot in my research.  I have seen similar threads but so far only reporting the problem.  For now I have installed Quicktime Player 10.7 (which appears in utilities, leaving Quicktime 10.3 in the main applications list) which plays the same videos with no problem, but it would be good to know if anyone has managed to find a workaround at all, or know if Apple have plans to do anything about it?

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.

  • How to configure Oracle 10g to use 4GB memory

I'm trying to configure Oracle 10g to use >4GB memory. Have configured server boot.ini with required flags (/3GB /PAE). Rebooted server then created standard database, then connected to db instance and changed oracle parameters DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS, USE_INDIRECT_DATA_BUFFERS as required. Restarted DB instance, DB fails to restarted with SGA memory error. According to oracle user docs the SGA is nolonger in effect due to previous settings. Can you provide example of SPFILE with parameters settings that do work and use >4GB memory. Current server has 8GB, 2 x Dual XEON core/processors (i.e. 8 processors)

The recommended /3GB switches in the boot.ini file can only be used with the following operating systems editions (KB article 291988):
    Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Data Center Server
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Data Center Edition
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003
Important: Windows 2000 and 2003 Server Standard Editions DO NOT SUPPORT /3GB Switch.
So if your OS is listed above, then you cannot have a larger SGA.

  • 4GB memory on new MacBook Pro Retina 13 with 2.4GHz dual core i5 processor &128GB flash storage

    Hello,
I'm completely new to the mac world but I'm fed up with pc's and all the insanity with processor problems, viruses, etc. I'm seriously looking at replacing my HP laptop with the new MacBook Pro Retina 13 with 2.4GHz dual core i5 processor, 4GB memory (RAM) & 128GB flash storage, OS X Mavericks (not sure which version). My concern is whether this will be reliably & consistantly fast & smooth both in desktop apps & internet use. I don't need it to do somersaults or anything too advanced. I would mostly be using Pages & spreadsheet apps & internet. It would double as my daughter's computer for cyber school so it's crucial that it runs quickly & efficiently. If she can't complete everything on time or log in to her online sessions because of a computer issue we'll be up a creek without a paddle since this particular cyber school's tech department is still working off of pc's running Windows XP. My father, thus far a pc user, thought I should consider moving up to 8GB memory but I was hoping that with flash storage being faster, I would be able to avoid the extra $100 for the upgrade to 8GB. My biggest fear is finding myself as frustrated & angry as I am now with all of my pc's, ready to take a sledge hammer to them because they take forever to boot, launch apps, internet or do just about anything (that is if they're even fuctioning at all- not joking). Does anyone have any advice or input?   Thanks!!
P.s. On Apple's site I found a refurbished late 2013 model of the MacBook Pro Retina 13 with all of the same specs as listed above (4GB, not 8GB), running OS X (doesn't say which one) but for a bit less than a brand new one. Is this the same model as what they're currently selling new in their store or did they just upgrade everything to match what is being offered in the current "new" model? I realize this may be a dumb question but I can't seem to find anything online indicated that Apple has released a model newer than what was released late last year (October 2013, I believe), except that the model released then came with SSD storage instead of flash.

No computer is fault free but Apple MBPs have a good track record.  In those cases where problems do arise, Apple has the best support in the industry.
A MBP with 4 GB RAM with the SSD storage should be adequate for your needs.

The latest MBP models came out in October 2013, so it will be the same, with the same warranty and telephone support.  The difference will be that the price will be less and it will be delivered in a plain white box.
I have purchased three MBPs from the refurbished section.  I have never been able to detect any cosmetic differences and will go that route again.
    Ciao.
