10.5.6 upgrade... can't send mail

I've tried EVERYTHING suggested here, with no luck. Mail receives fine, but I can't send anything.

After the beachball spins for several minutes, it says to try a different outgoing server address. All settings are correct (compared to the settings on Thunderbird on the same machine, and my iBook running 10.4).
The problem was SOLVED yesterday when I was quadruple-checking my settings, and went to the ATT-Yahoo site to confirm them (ATT is my ISP, and they run all their mail through Yahoo). They have historically been "Mac Ignorant", but after checking the addresses and setting (they were correct), I noticed an "Email Client Wizard" for MS Outlook that also said "and for Mac Mail OSX".
I downloaded and ran the program, and all is well. *My problem must be specific to ATT Yahoo and OSX 10.5.6.* I can still find no settings changes (although I don't deny the possibility of my overlooking something).
Bottom line-history:
1) *Mail worked in 10.4*.
2) *Upgraded to 10.5, and mail didn't work until I dumped the .plist files*, then it worked fine.
3) *Upgraded to 10.5.6, and couldn't send mail*, but could receive.
4) Installed and ran *ATT Yahoo OSX Mail Wizard*. Everything works.

  • After Leopard upgrade can't send mail in Apple Mail with dot mac account.

Just upgraded to Leopard and now I can't send mail through Apple Mail. Checked smtp and that's OK. How do I check what ports are open? That may be the problem. I looked at the Apple trouble shooting page and did everything there except the port check.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Lou

Fixed my own problem. I put in the SMTP address but didn't save. Once I saved it worked.

  • Can't send mail with server -- upgrade OS?

I have a new MB, so have been setting things up. In the course of all this, I realized, what with checking settings, etc., that I can easily send mail from the new laptop, which is running whatever the latest OS is -- I think that's 15.5.5, but I have nearly constant difficulties with Mail on my desktop, which is running 15.5.2. I keep getting -- but not always -- messages saying mail can't be sent using the selected server; do I want to try another server or try later, or what. But on the laptop -- I don't get that at all.
I did a search on the Apple site and its recommendation? Upgrade the OS. Now, I can certainly do that, though I always hold my breath for fear something will go wrong and I'll break something that wasn't broken, so to speak.
Is anyone else having this issue? Did upgrading the OS stop it? I probably will have to, because I really do need the Mail program to work as it should. I'm getting ready to move to it from Entourage, but I can't if I can't send mail.

I suddenly started having the can't send mail problem yesterday, and I'm on 10.5.5, so upgrading the OS is not a fix. I followed all the directions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1307?viewlocale=en_US
and that did not work. But it might, if quitting is done at the right time....
I don't know what fixed it, and I'm not sure if it will remain fixed (last night I fixed it on my own, only to find when I started up this morning that it wasn't working again), but today I followed the advice from another discussion to delete the outgoing server (in prefs/accounts/outgoing pulldown menu) and make a new one... make sure to delete all mail that is pending (anything in outbox save as draft and delete)... and to quit. In other words - follow the instructions on the support page or some of the other discussions, but quit before trying to send again. The other thing I did was do a software upgrade - there was something for airport and a security fix that I installed. Whether it was doing just the right stuff in just the right order or if it was the software installs that moved things along, I can't say. By the looks of it, this seems to be a long time issue for Apple Mail, though I've been using it for years without issue.

  • ALERT---ALERT since upgrading to last version 1/2 hour ago I can NOT send mail-ALERT ---

    HI,
I upgraded to the latest version half an hour ago. My TB is in French. Since then I can NOT send mail. A window appears with the mention " adjunction of // ajonction de" and the blue bar keeps going up to 10 minute. After 10 min i decided to abort, restart TB, make another testmail but same problem.

    Hello,
Certain Thunderbird problems can be solved by peforming a ''Clean Reinstall''. This means you remove Thunderbird's Program Files then reinstall Thunderbird. Please follow these steps:
#Download the latest version of Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download is complete, close all Thunderbird windows (Click Exit/Quit from the menu button on the right).
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #** C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\
    #** C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Thunderbird from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Thunderbird with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Thunderbird on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ Thunderbird Download Page], simply remove the folder ''thunderbird'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Thunderbird:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to open Thunderbird after clicking the Finish button.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Thunderbird's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Thunderbird data, including but not limited to, extensions, emails, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Can't Send Mail Since Updating To Leopard

I can get, but can't send mail using Apple mail with my local server running on port 110. Never had a problem with Tiger. Thunderbird works fine. My .mac account also works with both Apple mail and Thunderbird.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Most likely your local SMTP requires no separate Authentication, but in upgrading to Leopard, the settings have been changed. In Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information, click on the arrows beside the name of the smtp, and choose Edit Servers. Then under the Advanced Tab, check that the Port is 25, and choose Authentication of None, and without any entries for Username or Password. It should now work, but if you have knowledge that the SMTP should somehow be separately authenticated, tell who the provider of this SMTP is?

  • Using OS Mavericks can't send mail on hotmail?

I can't send mail on hotmail using os x mavericks, why?

I also was having the SMTP (offline) issue for Gmail and Comcast after upgrading to Maverick but not immediately.   I read through all the posts.  I was not seeing a common thread for a solution so I decided to bite the bullet and call Apple(if it costs, it costs).  I set up a call back.  They called me in 15 minutes, set up a view of my screen and proceeded to troubleshoot.  He started by going to "Window" "connection doctor".  Observed the red dots and descriptions as being a username/password issue.  Then went to "mail","Preference", account icon and entered the gmail 2-step verification password generated by Gmail and before clicking done (on the Gmail website),clicked on the "SMTP Mail server" box and chose "edit SMTP server list". In the window that appeared also entered the same Gmail generated password there as well.  We then tested by going to the "Connection Doctor" getting green dots for both incoming and outgoing Gmail entries.  Next test was sending email to myself.  It worked.  We did the corresponding procedure for the Comcast account.  It took 25 minutes and cost nothing.  I was surprised at the price since my iMac is 4 years old.  I hope this lasts and I don't get really good at this procedure.

  • I can receive mail on my mac account, but I can't send mail. What should I do?

I can receive mail on my mac account, but I can't send mail.  What should I do?

Hello, sounds like you haven't switched to iCloud yet, the old dot Mac & MobileMe servers are going away or gone for most already.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 587
    • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • Can't Send Mail - An Updated Report

My ISP is a (relatively) small one, Metrocast. They do not require authentication to log on to the smtp.metrocast.net server. In all iterations of OS X, from public beta to 10.5.7, sending email was instantaneous, or nearly so.
Right after the 10.6 upgrade, it was impossible to send mail. I used the "edit server list - advanced" function to enter my UID and password for the email account (even though it is not required), and I can now send mail - but it takes 60-120 seconds for the mail to go to the server.
Also, it constantly requires a password, even though a) the server DOESN'T require it, and b) the password is entered in Mail preferences.
Something has changed about smtp behavior in 10.6, and I can't seem to get it working right.

    Hi
You need to check with your ISP whether or not the send mail server (SMTP) requires a password.  Some do, but many do not.  When you know the correct password to send mail, then you need to tell Mail as follows:
Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Select the account
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) combo box, and select Edit SMTP Server List...
In the Account Information tab put the server name
In the Advanced Tab, set up the authentication information from your ISP.
    Good luck
    Bob

  • Can't send mail since 10.4.6 update

Since updating my OS to 10.4.6 I can't send mail. I can receive mail and I can browse online. But mail will not go out. I've verified all the Outgoing Mail Server info SEVERAL times and have had no luck. I've enabled Entourage to handle mail instead of MacMail and it won't work either. Totally stumped.
Same thing has happened on my iBook G4 laptop by the way. I'm convinced that the update has something to do with this.

    INTERNET CONNECTION LOST
so... since the 10.4.6 update once my computers fall asleep the connection to my wireless router is lost. (mail seems to be working ok, when i have an internet connection...)
I have tried multiple things to fix this. Thus far the only solution seems to be resetting the router to use connect back to the internet. Once this is done the internet connection works fine, until lost or the computers go to sleep. When i wake the computer i have to do it all over again... and on top of it the post link is missing on all the pages!!! so i am replying here.
So this time I have rebooted to my external drive with the previous version (10.4.5) to see if indeed it is the 10.4.6 update that seems to have hosed this connection somehow.
HELP please, this is terrible annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this?
    thank you.

  • Can't send mail on iOS 5 devices with iCloud

A long time ago I signed up for a .Mac trial to use that address with iChat. The trial expired, and, as expected, the address continued to work with iChat, though it no longer functioned as an email address. It then came to be my Apple ID. Now, having set that Apple ID up for use with iCloud, my iOS devicess are having trouble sending, and only sending email from my iCloud address. The reason is this: I logged into <username>@mac.com for iCloud (as that's my Apple ID), and everything set up right except the mail address that iOS Mail thinks I have. It thinks the mail address for the iCloud account is <username>@mac.com. When I send mail to <username>@me.com, my iOS devices get it just fine, but when I try to send mail back, it tries to send it from the @mac.com address, and therefore fails as that is not a valid email address.
I've tried to go into the settings and change the email address that it uses for iCLoud, but with no luck. I see a place to change it, but it is grayed out and won't let me select it and bring up a keyboard to change it.
Is there any way to tell it that it assumed the wrong email address for my iCloud? Or is there no way to send iCloud email from my iOS devices?
    Thanks in advance!
P.S. I can send mail via iCloud from the web app and from Apple Mail (OS X Lion), but not from iOS devices because of this glitch. I can also send mail from iOS devices using other email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo).

I found a work around that works.   Got to Settings...Icloud....account......advanced....outgoing mail server.....
    Add an "other" server.
    Host Name p01-smtp.mail.me.com
Put in your me.com email address as username and your Apple ID password
    SSL is on
    Authentication is password
    Server port 587
This worked for me.....I will use this until the bug is fixed.  (you may need to use p02, p03 etc)   Don't make this server your primary.   Leave it in "on" status in the other category.
    Good luck

  • Can't send mail... after 4 months of using it

I'm stumped... help me out please.
When i send a mail out, this message pops up, "Error : This Message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. Sending the message content to the server failed."
So it's still in my mailbox. But then, it shows up in my gmail account and on my blackberry as a sent mail, but the receiver never gets it. Also, i can still send mail from both my blackberry and gmail.com... just not from Apple Mail.
    What's going on?

Sometimes an ISP provider blocks one of your incoming
Mail ports and "won't notify you". ( Why? probably it's their protection software )
In my case Comcast blocked my Port 25 and my Outgoing kept bouncing.
    Incoming was fine.
Make sure when you change your Port to 587,
You also check "ON" the Secure Sockets Layer box right underneath,
    Then change Authentication: to Password
Then enter your name and password
    and click OK.
The reps at most of the providers
are useless and won't tell you
the second part of the solution.
It took me 2 days and 4 reps
at Comcast to find this out
and 10 hours of trying to
    clean my Mac...
    which they will always
    blame.
    Best of Luck, Tom

  • Receiving mail, but can't send mail with attachments?

    Hello,
I can't send mails anymore, I have been able to send some without any attachments (i.e. reply doesn't work as it automatically attaches the original text). This started 3 days ago. Also, my mail doesn't seem to recognize powerpoint and word docs., but I a know the people who have send me such files do not have VISTA. When I choose "open with" then it works. So I have 2 problems, one being moe urgent then the other.
    1) can't send mail with attachments
    2) .doc (word), .pps (powerpoint)attachments are not always recognized.
    thank you all!!!

Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select the account > account name , tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email account and password and see if it then works

  • Can't Send MAIL..... again

    hey...
    can;t send mail..
    10.4.10 on a macbook..
can send mail on my .MAC account, but my MAIL 2.0 is no good. it used to work fine...
i travel for a living, could the different log-on places have something to do with it.?
tried all the fixes on the Apple help site, no avail.
using port 587, removed and re-entered account, internet connection is fine...
want to use MAIL to send pix from my iPhoto's...
also, anyone know how to change the name in my account? somehow the spelling of my name is wrong, and every email i send says from 'blank' and it is wrong. looked at every piece of account info and they are all correct. where is the info for FROM: in an email stored...
    cheers..!!!
    ian

I'm having the same problem. I moved to a different apartment. I think my situation is this; my Mail says home and has my .mac account email address listed. My .mac account says .mac and has my .mac email address listed.
I've tried to change the Mail "home" so it doesn't say ,mac, but I haven't figured out how and when I change the email and server settings it tell me that it is an invalid directory.
So it's a circular puzzle and I can't seem to get out.
Is this your problem too? If not, do you know how to fix this one?

  • Can't send mail when connected to vpn

I'm hooked up with a private vpn service using OpenVpn. Everything works beautifully -- except that I can't send mail (receiving is no problem) because the SMTP ports offered through Mail 4.5 (ports 25, 465, 587) are blocked by many VPN providers as an anti-spam measure. I can't use port 993 with SSL because I live in Monaco, which has one ISP -- and it does not provide or support secure email (which is one of the reasons I want the VPN).
Is there another port I can select for SMTP, or some configuration tricks I'm missing? Thanks...:)

    Hello Brian,
Basically this is the VPN group:
crypto isakmp client configuration group open
     key (something)
     dns 192.168.1.1 8.8.8.8
     domain something.com
     pool SDM_POOL_1
     save-password
     backup-gateway 192.168.1.1
     max-users 5
     netmask 255.255.255.0
banner ^Cyou have connected to the vpn-ings!.  well done!    ^
I see that you are doing tunnel all, and you are not split tunneling on this configuration, what you can do is to use split tunnel, under this configuration as follow:
    ip access-list extended SPLIT_TUNNEL
permit ip XXXXX XXXXX 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
XXXXX --> are the inside subnets
    Then under this:
crypto isakmp client configuration group open
    acl SPLIT_TUNNEL
This will allow you to have access to the internal subnets through the tunnel and have access to internet through the internet connection on your computer.
For further details take a look to this document:
Don't use Any on your ACL statements for split tunneling purposes.
Let me know how it works out!
Please don't forget to rate and mark as correct the helpful Post!
