10.5.7 aiport express problems resolved - so far :)

Hello all,
Since updating my OS to 10.5.7 I have been experiencing frequents drop-outs when trying to stream music through Airtunes from my computers (duocore2 MacBook and 1st gen. intel iMac) to my Airport Express (G). I have past the last 2 days reading threads on Apple discussion board, Mac fixit, Googling, hard-resetting both my Airport extreme (N - gigabit) and Airport Express (G), pram-zapping both my computers, repairing permissions, deleting plist files, cursing all the saints names I know of (my catholic heritage ) to finally have both my computers being able to stream music normally to my Airport Express, without drop-outs. Here's what I've done, I thought I share it with you since this seem to be a common problem:
Hard-reset both my Airport (by pressing with a pen the little button intended to do so).
Important: DON'T upgrade the firmware of your airport extreme to 7.4.1, leave it to 7.3.2 (or downgrade to 7.3.2 if you already upgraded), since 7.4.1 is a not ready for prime time firmware update, it messes everything, I repeat, stay away from 7.4.1
1. Unplug the Airport Express, make sure the Airport extreme (or whatever base station you use) is on and attached to your modem (cable, dsl...). Open Airport utility and set the base station manually (Airport extreme n - attached to my cable-modem, in my case) as follow:
1st tab (Airport)
- Base station menu:
Give the airport the name you want (airportbase, in my case)
Fill the password fields
Check "Remember this password in my keychain"
Leave checked "Set-time automatically" (not important, default I guess)
Leave unchecked "Allow set-up over WAN"
- Wireless menu:
"Wireless Mode" = Create a wireless network
"Wireless network name" = the same name as the base station (airportbase, here)
"Allow this network to be extended" = unchecked
"Radio mode" = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
"Channel" = 10 (VERY IMPORTANT, THAT DID THE TRICK, my express started to work normally only after I assigned a specified channel to my base station)
"Wireless security" = WPA2 Personnal
Fill the passwords field
Check "Remember this password in my keychain"
In this menu, there's a button at the bottom named "Wireless options", when clicked a new window appears in which I have the following settings:
- Country: Canada
- Multicast rate: 2 mbps
- Transmit power: 100%
- WPA group key time out: 364 DAYS
- Create a close network = unchecked
- Use interference robustness = unchecked
- Acces menu:
Mac address acces control = Not enabled
2nd tab (Internet)
- Internet connection menu:
Connect using = Ethernet
Configure IpV4 = Using DHCP
Ethernet Wan port = Automatic (Default)
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
- DHCP Menu:
DHCP beginning address = (from drop down list) 10.0 and then (next case) .1 and then .2
DHCP ending address = 10.0.1.200
DHCP lease = 364 DAYS
- NAT Menu:
enable default host as = unchecked (and next field is empty)
enable NAT port mapping protocol = checked
3rd tab (Printers)
unchanged (the "Share printers over WAN" option is Unchecked)
4th tab (Disks)
- I can see my attached external drive name in the Disks menu
- In the File sharing menu, "Enable file sharing" is checked, "with Airport extreme password" is selected in the "Secure shared disks" drop-down list, "Remember this password in my keychain" is checked, "Not allowed" is selected in the "Airport disks guest access" drop-down list and "Share disk over WAN" is unchecked.
5h tab (Advanced)
- Statistics menu: The "Syslog destination Address" field is empty, "Syslog Level" is set to "5 - Notice" from the drop-down list (default?), "Allow SNMP" is checked and "Allow SNMP over WAN" is unchecked
- Port mapping menu: Empty
- IPv6 menu: "IPv6 Mode" drop-down list is set to "Link-local only"
Click Update and wait for the Airport extreme base station to restart.
After the airport extreme is up and running (green light), restart all the computers that will be using your network.
Open System Preferences on all the freshly rebooted computer, click on the "Network" icon, select and add your newly created network and click "Apply". Then click the "Advanced" button and go to the TCPIP tab and make sure "Configure IPv6" is set to "OFF" and then click "Apply".
2. Plug in the Airport Express and open Aiport Utility and set the Airport express manually as follow:
1st tab (Airport)
- Base station menu: give the airport express the name you want, fill the password fields and check "Remember this password in my keychain"
- Wireless menu: Select "Join a wireless network" form the "Wireless Mode" drop-down list. Enter your airport base station name in the "Wireless Network Name" field (or select it from the drop-down list, it should be there, by default, anyway). Select the security (if not already selected after you select your network name - WPA/WPA2 Personnal, in my case), fill the password fields.
2nd tab (Internet)
Select "Using DHCP" from the "Configure IPv4" drop-down list
3rd tab (Music)
Check "Enable Airtunes.
In the "iTunes Speaker Name" field, put the same name as the one you gave to your airport express. Don't fill the password fields.
4th tab (Printers)
Unchanged (nothing there sinc no printer is attached to my express)
5th tab (Advanced)
The "Syslog destination Address" field is empty, "Syslog Level" is set to "5 - Notice" from the drop-down list (default?), and "Allow SNMP" is checked
Click the Update button and wait for the Airport express to restart.
After the airport express is restarted (green light), restart your computers, repair permission on all of them and then restart your computers again.
Now, you should be able to stream music to your airport express.
3. Finally, next time Apple issues a system update, wait a good month before updating, then go on Apple discussions boards and search for the number of the update, like 10.5.7 in this this case, along with airtunes problems, like 10.5.7 airtunes problems, that's what I will do. Chill!

Thanks for a very complete and thorough description wiiphone!
Question about your wireless channel: Are there any other competing wireless networks in your area that led you to choose channel 10?
If you don't mind doing some experimenting, does changing the channel from 10 to some other (fixed) channel, have any effect? The reason for asking is that I have reason to believe "automatic" might not be desirable, but there ought not to be anything magical about channel 10.
Please post if you experience any more dropouts. I'm glad it's working for you; I'm just doubtful this will prove to be a permanent fix.

You already have the software installed that you need if you have 10.8.2.
If AirPort Utility cannot find the Express, that is another matter. More software is not needed. More troublehooting is needed.
Power up the Express for a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a heading of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express
    What happens?

  • My wi-fi worked fine on Airport Express two days ago.  Now the light is green, but I can't get the Internet on my satellite connection.  I've checked Network Preferences, Aiport Express menu, and the satellite tech support. The Ethernet connection works.

My wi-fi connection from my iPad via the Airport Express Base Station on my home computer worked just fine until yesterday morning.  I have a Macintosh G5 with a satellite connection.  I could not get an Internet connection.  After using the Network Preferences and Aiport Express applications several times, then unplugging and replugging in the computer, satellite modem and Airport Express module, checking the satellite dish for any obstructions, and so on, the computer still wouldn't connect to the Internet.  (The green light was on in the Airport Express module.)  I called the satellite company technical support division last night.  The tech couldn't find any problem with the satellite connection.  When I plugged the satellite modem cord directly into the Ethernet outlet on my computer, I could pick up the Internet.
Today, the Airport Express module still has a green light but still doesn't connect to the Internet.  The only thing I can think of is that lights went out for about 15 minutes yesterday morning.  All of my electronics, except the Aiport Express Base Station, are on surge protectors.  Why would the Airport Express module still have a green light if it was damaged by the electrical outage?
I bought the module in 2009.  I have never had problems with Apple equipment before this. Is this base station fixable?
    I would appreciate your suggestions.

Hello everyone.  I too have experienced the same problem Mary described starting on the same day she mentioned January 12.  I have a G5 iMac, a G5 mini-mac, and a G4 laptop.  They were all working fine but all have mostly the same problem now in that the G4 does not connect at all and the G5s connect once in a while after restarts but do not maintain the connection.  In my case there was no power interruption.  In fact, the G4 laptop was not even connected to the home power connection.  My iPad2 and iPhone 4s wireless work fine and a wireless PC and Android tablet work fine as well.  The G5 and G4 work fine on an ethernet connection. ISP tech support (AT&T u-Verse) was very generous with their time in trying to solve my problem although it was established early on that their connection and equipment was working fine and that the problem was with my computers.  They walked me through a manual reset of all the particulars on IP addresses etc. so the problem was not related to that either. In the end ISP tech support concluded that the problem must lie with the Airport driver.  For some reason it changes the IP addresses to an incorrect address so it cannot connect.  Indeed when I tried the diagnostics on the G4 I got a window Pop-up that said an application had reset my settings. (In retrospect I seem to recall that I may have gotten that same message early on with the G5s but at that time I did not think much about it and went about trying to reset the settings but that process never concluded well) I think that the problem may be that there must have been an update of the Airport software that was not backward compatible with the G5 and older Macs.  I mention all this for two reasons.  First, perhaps someone out there who knows better than I do how to bring this to Apple's attention and perhaps they will address this.  Second, I would be curious to know whether there is anyway one can return a configuration on Macs to some earlier time period (as you can on PCs) when everything worked and then leave it that way foregoing any subseqent upgrades or any subsequent apps?

  • Get 9672 error when adding an Epson 7800 connected to an aiport express

I get a 9672 error when I try to add our epson 7800. It is a rendevous printer connected to an airport express. The aiport express is an extension of our aiport network base which is an airport extream. I am trying to add it to a G5 with osx 10.3.9.
I can add it to our mac minis that run 10.4 with no problem.
I tried deleting the driver and reinstalling the latest driver from epson and deleting the printer preferences.
It shows up as a rendevous printer but when I try and add it I get a 9672 error.

The problem seemed to be that we were printing to two epson Printers, a cx5400 and a 7800.
    I repaired permissions.
Then I deleted the epson print drivers by putting the epson folder which is in the Library folder in the trash. Next I deleted the printer preferences by putting all the apple.print files in the users, home folder, library, preferenced folder in the trash and rebooted.
I had to reinstall the printer driver for the 5400 first, It requires a reboot, then reinstall the 7800 print driver. Then I connected the 7800 from my g5 via usb, added the printer and printed. Next I put the put the 7800 on the Airport Express, added the printer and printed. I then printed to the 5400 and deleted the printer I defined to print via usb from the G5.
Now it works. I tried to install the drivers and add the printers in many different orders and it seemed to be very important that the order above be followed. If I didn't I would get the 9672 error when I tried to add the 7800 or a communications error when I tried to print to the 7800.
Support at epson let me know how to deleted the printer driver.

  • Outlook Express problem

I occasionally receive e-mail with Visio attachments that I KNOW are not harmful yet a message at the top of the e-mail says "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: HSHA.vsd"  What changes can I make to my outlook express to resolve this problem?  My co-worker in the next office can open them, but on my computer, they are grayed out.

OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail
If receive this error with attachments in Outlook Express, here's how you fix it:
Outlook Express 6 has quite a few security enhancements that are good, but with some of the latest security patches OE has become so hyperactive with blocking everything that even having an attachment has become useless.
To view the attachments that Outlook Express has deemed "unsafe" do this:
    Open Outlook Express
    Click Tools->Options
    Click the Security tab
Uncheck the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus box
    Click OK.
If you're opening an executable, be absolutely sure that it's safe. I never open an exe unless I know exactly what it is, and was expecting it.

  • Another Airport Express problem thread.

    Hi Everyone,
I got a Powerbook recently and like many on these threads I am beset with Airport Express problems.
Here's my story. I purchased my Powerbook about a month ago and popped into the Apple Store to ask about the best way to have wireless internet access at home. They recommended the D-Link DSL-300T ADSL modem and Airport Express. I purchased these items and set everything up at home. This didn't work. After a week of talking to Apple, I got the answer to my problem from a Mac message board. Supposedly the ADSL modem recommended by Apple and stocked in their online store wasn't compatible with the lastest version of Airport Express 6.2.0. So I dowgraded the firmware to 6.1.1 and everything worked fine. My next problem was after running an OS X software update which I can presume also updated the Airport Express back to 6.2.0. So again I downgrade to 6.1.1 and it works again. Then I have to get my Powerbook replaced as the refurb Apple sold me didn't have the superdrive in it that Apple advertised, so I transfer my settings and files and i can go online for a couple of days and then it stops working again. I do the downgrade again but this doesn't help. So I take it to see a genius at Apple who performs the AE update 2005-001 which he says will solve the problem of incompatability with 3rd party modems. Take it home, it doesn't work. Powerbook almost gets thrown out of the window.
Why is something that should be so simple so difficult.
My questions are does anyone have a D-Link DSL 300T modem that works with the update 2005-001 ???
Why do Apple recommend an ADSL modem which doesn't work with their products ???
What ADSL modem for the UK does work with Airport Express ???

Hi Bollard, not sure whether this would work with the current model of the modem, but I ran into problems with the DSL300+ when first using it wit an airport extreme, back in 2003.
I eventually resolved the problems by using the modem in bridging mode. Not sure if this would be applicable with the new model, or whether it work if you are needing PPPoA rather than PPPoE, but for what its worth my experiences and solution can be found at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607296&#607296 I've had a fair bit of positive feedback from people who found it worked for them, at least with similar equipment and connection protocol.
    Cheers

  • ITunes cannot find Aiport Express via D-link

    iTunes cannot find Aiport Express.
iMac and Airport Express both connected to D-link wireless router (DI-524UP). Can see Airport Express on iMac Airport Utilities, and can communicate (do changes) via the D-link network. iMac working fine with D-link for internett access also.Have set up Aiport Express to serve as extra speakers in iTunes. Airport Express connected to stereo with cable. Can choose the external speakers in iTunes. Think this means iTunes also must be communicating with Airport Express, because If I change the name of the externals speakers in Airport Express, it also changes in iTunes after clicking "update" and the Airport Express re-starts. However after choosing the external speakers in iTunes and starting a song iTunes is seeking the speakers (Airport Express) without finding it. All devices are connected to the same D-link network.
Working fine when I set up Airport Express with its own network and connecting it with iMac. Also I could connect my iPhone to my iTunes library (remote app.) This is not working in the d-Link network either.
It's a drag to have to change both the PC and the iPhone to another network every time I want to play musik on the stereo. This is why I am trying to get everything to work together in the same network (D-Link).
Somebody having met this problem before?

Correction: Downloaded an update for the D-Link, and now the iPhone is working with iMac for remote control of iTunes.
Still iTunes cannot find Airport Express when choosing external speekers

  • Time Capsule/AirPort Express problem with DHCP server

    Hi everyone,
I seem to be having some weird issue with my home network.  I use a Time Capsule (2011) as my main router and a new AirPort Express as a wireless bridge (router set to "Extend a wireless network", the LAN port is connected to network printer).  Recently, it seems that at least once or twice a week that the DHCP server on my router stops working.  Computers that have static IP addresses have no problem accessing the internet or my local network, but  devices that don't have static IPs  are unable to join the network (over Wi-Fi or ethernet) because they are not being assigned an IP.  This never happened before.  I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the recent firmware update.  Anybody else seem to be having this problem?  I am able to get the DHCP server working again by restarting the Time Capsule or by setting the computer or device that won't connect to a static IP.  Really curious why this seems to be happening…
Thanks for all the help guys

I am having the same problem with the same setup: a 2011 Time Capsule and an Airport Express. I've had my Aiport Express hooked in for about 2 years, so I know it is not the problem. The only difference I have is the DHCP will stop working on the ethernet, but still work over WiFi from the TC. Rebooting the Time Capsule fixes the DHCP issue.
I am running version 7.6.4 in the Time Capsule.

  • How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme? My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured" and my AirPort tool on my PC will not permit me to add my new Airport Extreme network (no network names to choose from)

How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme?
I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?
    Sigve

    Hi
    Thanks for Swift reply.
Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.
    Please advise
    Regards
    Sigve

  • HT1515 Just installed Airport Express on Mac 10.6.8  Can't see base station.  Hard Reset the Airport.  Rebooted machine.  How can I tell if this is a Mac problem or Airport Express Problem?

I have a Mac 10.6.8.  Just installed Airport Express.  I can't see any base stations.  I did a hard reset on the Airport Express, turned off all devices,  turned them back on.   I see plenty of Airport networks in the neighborhood.  How can I tell if I have a Mac problem or an Airport Express problem?  Airport Express blinks Amber.

Obviously,  I'm still using ethernet to be able to reply to this.
Alright, use the same ethernet cable to plug directly into the airport express. This will FORCE the airport utility to now see it regardless of weak signals & interference. You can set it up that way.
BTW, what is the original intent on the express?

  • Using Aiport Express and internet at the same time?

I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this subject please?
I've got a Macbook running through a wireless BT ADSL modem. I have also managed to connect the Macbook to my Aiport Express to allow me to wirelessly pipe iTunes through my stereo. I am aware that you cannot run both at once (i.e pipe music and browse the web) due to the Macbook being able to be only connected to one wireless network at a time.
My questions is whether there is anyway round this? If I bought an Aiport Extreme base station, connected that to my wireless router and used the Airport Extreme base station for the wireless connection would I be able to add the Aiport Express to that wireless network and subsequently have the internet and the Aiport Express running on the same wireless network - hence being able to pipe the music wirelessly and also browse the web at the same time?
Or is there another way round it?
Any info anyone could offer would be a great help
    Thanks in advance

Ahh am I right in thinking this is the way to do it?

Sorry, but no. You must connect an analog or optical digital cable to be able to send an audio signal from the Express.

You can have Apple replace the logic board, but it will be at your expense.  The free replacement program has ended.
As a band aid you may try the following:
