10.5.7 finder text disappeared

I installed 10.5.7 this morning. Worked great, except now i have no text beneath the icons on my desktop, no text above the icons in the dock, and no text anywhere in finder, just icons. makes finding the right file a mite trickier! any thoughts?

I would run DU and repair HD and permissions and then reboot.
If that does not help, create a new user account and see if that one is normal. Report back.
If you used the autosoftware update, you should download the combo update and reapply that one.

  • Flash CS6 Text Disappearing

I have been using Flash CS6 running on a Windows 7 work laptop since January. Not a single problem until last week.
Say I have a text box inside a banner symbol. The text says "WELCOME".  Normally you click the symbol to edit in place, click the text box and you get a blinking cursor where you can change the text to "HELLO".  You click the stage to back out of the text and the symbol and every thing is good. Now you have a banner that says HELLO.
Here is what I am getting as of last week:
I click the symbol to edit in place. When I get to the level where the text box is located, the text disappears. If I click around eventually it will select the text box containing "WELCOME" but the text box now appears down and to the right of where it actually is.  When I double click to edit the text box, the text is now visible and back in the right spot. Once I change it to HELLO and click out of the text box, the text disappears again. If I return to the main stage, the symbol still says "WELCOME" but once I render the new word "HELLO" shows in the SWF.
Ever seen that?  Our IT department has jacked with it and can't fix it. I am waiting for someone to come back and re-install Flash to see if that fixes the issue.  The only other thing I have noticed is that if I start a new project as AS3, add text directly to the stage, it causes the same problem. But if I start a new project as AS2, it's fine and with no text issues. I can't find anything online about this issue. Wondering if I have an AS3 setting wrong or a corrupt library file.

  • [SOLVED] Text disappearing in GTK applications

    Here's a screenshot of what I'm describing: http://i.imgur.com/chJ1V.png
Text disappears from labels, lists, textboxes and tooltips. I've noticed I can copy and paste text from GTK textboxes into Qt applications but if I copy text from one GTK textbox to another it still won't appear. When typing in a textbox I'll be able to see it (most of the time) but then one keystroke will make the whole text disappear, pressing backspace does not make it reappear.
Also, some text reappears when reducing the size of a list horizontally: http://imgur.com/a/LvBJ1 -- Increasing the width causes more text to disappear.
I can't seem to find any solution through google and I don't think it's a font issue since I'm having no problems with Qt applications.
Any ideas on what the problem could be? Thanks

This issue is also occurring in terminal emulators that use vte or vte3. This includes Lilyterm, Sakura, etc (you can see the list under VTE-Based Terminals in the list of Common Applications on the Arch Wiki.
I wanted to point this out because I don't use any GTK applications, hopefully this should be helpful for lilyterm users who are searching for this issue.
Also, updating to [testing] didn't work for me. Downgrading to xorg-server 1.12.1-1 works for now

  • TEXT DISAPPEARS

I recently ugraded to appleworks 6 from 5 on a PC with Win XP Pro. I had a database created in 5 which was imported to 6. My problem is that when I create a new record and I type in text, when I move to the next field the text disappears. If I go into an existing record and try to edit it, it works fine. I type in text and it remains.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't really have a definitive answer. A couple of possibilities that help "funky" problems with databases on a Mac may help. First, save the AppleWorks 6 database as AppleWorks 5 & reopen this in AppleWorks 6. I know that your problem database (& mine) started out as AW 5, but it's worth a try as it seems to strip out some minor corruption. Second, create a new blank database in AppleWorks 6 with the same fields in the same order then go to File > Insert & select the problem database. It may be something in the file structure of the problem database. On a Mac, this can also be done by dragging the icon of the old DB onto the window of the new one. I've never tried that in Windows, but it may work.
I had this problem appear periodically in a database when I briefly used AppleWorks 6 on Windows 2000 Pro. Once the database did that, it even carried over when I opened the same database in AppleWorks 6 on my Mac. Unfortunately, the various things I tried to fix it didn't always work the next time it happened. I remember someone mentioning a fix in a forum several years ago, but by the time it happened to me I couldn't remember or find the post.

  • Text disappearing off page.

While working with Pages, whether with a text box or with a table I find that when I get to the bottom of a page the text disappears - it does not appear on the next page. Help!

    Jerry
If all it is is a list, why bother with the table?
Come to that why bother with Pages 5.2?
What happened to all the fixes we were promised in 6 months? Times up.
How's Pages 5.2 rating in the USA App Store?
Reality is starting to bite for the rosy eyed. Here the numbers of  1 star raspberries are inexorably creeping up, and the 5's have fallen behind yet again.
Time for Apple to bring out Pages 5.3 to sweep it all under the carpet again.

  • IDML file problems - text disappears & unselectable when found

    Hi,
    My first question here.
I use Adobe CS5.5 and I need to export .indd files into the .idml format so they are readable by my translation software.
I exported my file to idml, but when I open this file, I get a "unable to set bounding box message", and all the text has disappeared from the text boxes. When I toggle the text box (make it bigger), I find the text, but I am unable to select it. Saving the idml file as indd doesn't make any difference.
My translation software actually reads the idml and my translated text is there when I re-export it, but still not visible on normal view, and still not selectable (so I can't cut and paste it back into my original indd file).
I have tried various "unlock" suggestions found on other forums, but nothing is working. I have installed all the CS5.5 updates... I am wondering if there is a problem with my original file.
Any help most appreciated, I've been grappling with this all morning.

Ok, this problem is half-solved, and there's a few leads.
It turns out the text is selectable, it just doesn't show it has been selected (no blocking shows), and this was also also the case I realise with the original .indd file. This resolves the situation for my practical purposes, as I can copy and paste my (translated) text from the idml file back into the original .indd file.
Still don't know why the text disappeared from the boxes in the first place, or the relationship to the "bounding box", but it seems likely the whole thing is derived from issues with the original file.
Thanks to those who had a look anyway! Hope there's something here that can help someone else.

As a student, you might be able to get Office for Mac from the college bookstore at a substantial discount. Otherwise, I think your best option for documents that need to be shared with Office users is to get one of the free Office clones such as LibreOffice.

  • Can't find text in distilled file, using some fonts

The products I have are Mac OS 10.6.8, Acrobat X and 9, and Word 2011 and Apple Pages for Mac; Acrobat 9 and Word 2007 for Windows XP.
There are numerous ways to create PDFs on both platforms, whether through save as or creating a PostScript file and distilling it. The problem is that with docs I have using Calibri, Cambria, and Candara, if I distill a PostScript file made from Mac Word or Pages, neither Acrobat nor Apple Preview can find text in the resulting PDF, whether the file distilled with Mac or Windows Distiller. (Meaning a "find" for a string comes up as not found.)  All other combinations are okay, even writing a PS file in Windows Word and distilling with Mac Distiller.
I mention the fonts specifically because most of the time I use OTF faces, which always work. I even tried using the Windows TTF versions in the Mac operating system -- same failure.
And even if I force these fonts to be embedded in the Distiller job options, still no joy. If I take so much as a comma and set it to an OTF, I can find the comma. Also, Acrobat *can* find Arial text in a Visio flowchart placed in the Word doc. I don't know how the author placed it there, but it's probably copy from Visio, paste into Word.
The reason why I care about this is because the distilled PFDs are just a tiny bit better looking on the screen than other options, such as "Save as PDF" from the Mac OS Print dialogue. The only other one that looks as good is the Create PDF button in Windows Word, but I would rather not have to use Windows just to get a better-looking PDF.
    So to summarize:
Mac app > write PS file > Mac Distiller = fail
Mac app > write PS file > Win Distiller  = fail
Win app > write PS file > Mac Distiller  = okay
Win app > write PS file > Win Distiller  = okay
Mac app > save as PDF directly > okay
This might not be a problem with Distiller per se; it could be the Mac OS engine that creates the PS files. You see, I had heard that Apple used their own internally developed engine for the options to save PDF files directly, but was using Adobe code when one used the option to write a PostScript file, so that's why I'm so surprised and disappointed it fails.

Hmmm. In what way are Distilled PDFs "a tiny bit better looking on screen" than those made by OS X?
You are viewing both in the same app and platform?
And you're referring to font display?
What settings are you using in Distiller which you think might have some bearing on this?

OS X's native graphics drawing environment, Quartz, is essentially a "Display PDF", so creating a PDF file is a very simple procedure.
Writing PostScript for printing uses Apple's own cgpdftops CUPS filter. I doubt there is any "Adobe code" as such, and I dispute the implication that "Apple code == bad; Adobe code == good", which you seem to suggest.
The specifications for PDF and PostScript are clearly documented, and it should be easy for anyone to follow them.
However, the fact remains that when Apple converts these MS fonts to PS, something goes wrong. It may be a bug in Apple's code; or it may be that Apple it strictly interpreting font data which MS is playing fast and loose with. Windows' own PS export would no doubt be designed to work with the looser implementation in MS's fonts. This is just hypothetical of course, though is in keeping with tradition.
What you could do is use a decent text editor like TextWrangler (free from BareBones software) to compare the PostScript code from Windows and OS X.
You could also look a the Properties tab in Acrobat of the PDFs, and compare the font encoding.
You could also test running out PostScript from any other app on OS X that you have using those fonts.
However, I think it is unlikely that you will see resolution unless MS releases a new version of their fonts, or some new version of OS X makes an amendment to fix the bug or cater for the MS issue. Perhaps Lion will do this; perhaps it won't.
Are you using the versions of these fonts that came with Office 2011 for Mac? What happens if you use the Windows versions of the fonts on OS X?

  • Text disappearing in pdf file

I received a word file that was converted to pdf using "pdf maker". In the word file there is "shading" behind the text. In the pdf file if I select portions of the text and try to "highlight" it to make comments, some of the text disappears. (The text actually goes behind the "shading" so that you can't see it). If I use the "touch up object" tool in Acrobat professional, I can select the "shading" and delete and see the text underneath. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks

I have run into this problem myself. I have been able to use the object selection tool (In Acrobat 8 Pro) to select the box in front of the text and delete it without also deleting the text.

  • Text disappearing in pdf when re-ordering tags

I have a pdf (Acrobat 8 Pro), and I have created it as a tagged pdf in InDesign CS3. However, when I convert it to the pdf, the order of the tags changes, so that I need to use the Touchup Reading Order tool. When I do this, however, text disappears. The text in the ID file is in an opaque text box, and what is actually happening when I re-order in Acrobat is that the text is moved behind the opaque box so that it is no longer visible, but it still appears in the Order dialogue box.
However, in ID, they are one object - it is a text box containing text, not a separate opaque box behind the text. Otherwise I might try tagging the box as an artifact and see if that works. Theoretically, I could select it in Acrobat to tag it as an artifact, but the selection tool only allows me to select rectangular areas, and so it selects both the opaque box and the text behind it.
    Any suggestions?

  • Text disappearing in tagged PDFs

I recently upgraded to Acrobat Professional 9. When creating PDFs via "Convert to Adobe PDF" in Word with tagging enabled,  I'm sometimes seeing text disappear in the conversion process so that whole lines are missing from the PDF.
Using the print dialog to print to PDF works fine and does not result in missing text. However I need tagged PDFs to meet high accessibility requirements, so should be converting from Word. Has anyone else encountered this problem? The version of Word I'm using is 2003.

Usually when this happens it is related to the printer reflow that WORD does. There is a setting in WORD to select to not use the printer metrics for sending information to the printer. The other solution relates to selecting the Adobe PDF printer before you finish your layout, but you have already said the printer works fine.

  • Acrobat 5.0.5 text disappears in Free Text Tool

Ok it's an oldie, but it's a goodie.  I love my Acrobat 5.0.5, and never had any reason to upgrade.  Well once.  From 5.0 to 5.0.5.  I have used my license on three different machine builds.  95, 2K and now XP Pro 64 bit and it still works great.  (Yes, this program has outlived 2 older computers!)  Well.  Until yesterday.  Suddenly when I create a free text box, and type in there, the text disappears.  This happened once before a few years back, and I have forgotten what the fix was, but I do believe that was why I upgraded from 5.0 to 5.0.5.  Now it is happening again.
Now for the real kick in the pants.  I tried to reinstall my product, thinking to correct the problem, and all of a sudden Adobe doesn't like my several years old serial number.  I get the error message that it isn't valid.  And it IS a valid license, just a really OLD one.  I only used it for the latest install of this, my same program, about a year ago, maybe a little more than a year.
I tried to just run the 5.0.5 update program again and it says the program isn't even installed to update.  What the heck?  OF COURSE IT IS.
I'm very frustrated and disappointed, as this is an old favorite of mine and I hate to think that Adobe has rused it so that it just won't work anymore to force me to purchase a newer version, when I didn't need a newer version.
If someone familiar with this old version of Acrobat could help me resolve this issue, I would very much appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

The 64 bit OS can run most 32 bit applications just fine if you set it up right, and as I stated, this issue is not a compatibility issue, but a recurring issue within the application itself that also plagued me once upon a time when I ran it under Win 2k.  Apparently an Adobe bug, and I suspect it is more related to the forced download of an updated version of the basic acrobat reader (due to Adobe inflicted browser issues)  than it is with a Windows update.  In my case, I set all of my old 32 bit applications up on a separate drive.  I never default install programs on the main OS drive if it can be helped.  Some of them I have to click the actual application *.exe or shortcut, because "open with" absolutely will not work, even if it is set as the default application for certain extensions.  You will get an error message about it not being a valid Win32 application.  From the program itself, however, once it is launched, it is never a problem to browse to and open the correct data file.
I even went so far as to install the Adobe basic reader when I was forced to do so, on a completely separate drive from my Acrobat 5 because I am well aware that previously caused problems as well, and never EVER let the application make its automatic updates from Adobe.... EITHER of them, actually.  I suspect it was one of those snuck through and not a Windows update that caused it, although the possibility exists, I suspect Adobe does whatever it can to sell more software.

  • Text disappears on buttons in InDesign cs6

I'm doing an interactive pdf from InDesign CS6. I have buttons that I've created using just a solid rectangle and reversed white text in the rectangle and the buttons are on my master page. I want my buttons to change to a different colour when you click or mouse over them (only text to change to a different colour). When I go to 'click state' or 'rollover state' (I've tried both), the button is copied and I can change the colour but then in my normal state, I have an overset text, (I get a red plus sign) my text disappears. When I try and correct my normal state, the same thing happens in my click or rollover state. When I export a file to an interactive pdf, my normal state button is without text and my over or click state button has text with the colour that I've selected. Does anyone know why this happens or how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    NZ

We might be able to help you but you'll have to drop the attitude. We're not Adobe here, but users like you.
You'll need to tell us exactly what you're doing and what's not working for you. By "rollovers," you could mean the change of appearance of a button. You could also be meaning what are sometimes called Show/Hide buttons where clicking a button causes another button to appear. Which is it?
And what kind of output are you attempting? Interactive PDF? SWF (Flash)? DPS?
