10.5.7. has transformed my OS performance

I just installed 10.5.7, and now my system is running 10 times faster. Pages load up great in Safari, the iTunes store no longer lags, my mouse and keyboard are working fine, applications load quicker, everything seems to respond a whole lot better now, a real noticeble change in performance.
This machine has not worked as well as this for over a year, at least. So what was wrong before, what did the new update do to my computer, did it reset something, change my settings, what?
The only problem I still have is click and drag doesn't work so well, and I can't open up album covers in iTunes, if it's been open for half an hour/a few hours.
But overall, very happy so far (fingers crossed). For once I would like to offer the programmers a thumbs up well done chaps.

There's a lot of stuff coming up on activity monitor, but I don't know what I need and what I don't.
Dunno what you mean by Page outs and Swap, but I don't appear to have any. I just did a PRAM reset before I posted this though. How many times should I have to do that?
What if I get some of these things, what should I do?

Where does the problem lie? Also can anyone tell me the hierarchy of use between the Apple Maps, SIRI, and Google maps when the app is on the phone? How do you choose one over the other as the default map usage? Or better still how do you suppress SIRI from using the Apple maps app when requesting a "go to"?
I have placed an address location into the CONTACTS list and when I ask SIRI to "take me there" it found a TOTALLY different location in the metro area with the same street name. I have included the address, the quadrant, (NE) and the ZIP code into the CONTACTS list. As it turns out, no amount of canceling the trip or relocating the address in the CONTACTS list line would prevent SIRI from taking me to this bogus location. FINALLY I typed in Northeast for NE in the CONTACTS list (NE being the accepted method of defining the USPS location quadrant) , canceled the current map route and it finally found the correct address. This problem would normally not demand such a response from me to have it fixed but the address is one of a hospital in the center of town and this hospital HAS a branch location in a similar part of town (NOT the original address SIRI was trying to take me to). This screw up could be dangerous if not catastrophic to someone who was looking for a hospital location fast and did not know of these two similar locations. After all the whole POINT of directions is not just whimsical pasttime or convenience. In a pinch people need to rely on this function. OR, are my expectations set too high?
How does the iPhone select between one app or the other (Apple Maps or Gppgle Maps) as it relates to SIRI finding and showing a map route?
Why does SIRI return an address that is NOT the correct address nor is the returned location in the requested ZIP code?
Is there a known bug in the CONTACTS list that demands the USPS quadrant ID be spelled out, as opposed to abreviated, to permit SIRI to do its routing?

siri will only use apple maps, this cannot be changed. you could try google voice in the google app.

Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

administrator and as well managed services account. also noticed, cannot delete the service application, saying you don't have enough permission to delete the db. but using this account i was able to do everything before in my environment. is anyone already

One possible solution would be to organise your inbox into folders.
Its never relly good on any system to have one folder that has everything in it.
Try going to you web gui for that mail account and organise your folders and move mails from your inbox into corresponding folders for better organisation.
Several folders containing the same amount of one folder will usually load a little quicker as the folder may not be accessed to download its content unless veiwed.
So having 10 folders with organised content, and you inbox as an area thats to hold only new emails would work much much quicker with imap.
Most imap servers will only update the contents of a folder when its veiwed.

Does Apple have any plans on making an Iphone app to control Logic Pro like Motu has done for Digital performer? They make it for free which is a HUGE plus!

i was wondering if Apple has any intentions on making an Iphone/Ipad app to remotely control Logic like Motu has for Digital performer. Motu has it available for free which is a huge plus but Id be willing to pay for one if Apple came out with one of its own.Im a little mift as to why it hasnt been done, Im sure they are capable of it.

I've been using Touch.OSC, from Hexler. It is not created by Apple but works like a charm on Logic. I've been using the app for over a year both on my iPad and my iPhone. Check the app on Hexler @ http://hexler.net/software/touchosc. Another app (which I still haven't tried) is lpTouch. Yeah, it would be cool if Apple included its own iPad/iPhone app to control LogicPro on a future update... but for the stick price of the apps I've mentioned you might have a good 'bang for the buck".

Why has the updates taken performance away.

I have owned an iPhone 4s 16gb for 2 years roughly. ( I only use 4gb of its capacity) It was the best smart phone in my opinion among 98% of the surrounding people i know, opinions also. I can not come up with any other reason as to why the performance has dropped off the charts except for every time i was prompted to update its software with the little red dot notification, the phone immediately showed signs of being very unstable and unpredictable. This makes me very hesitant to purchase a new iPhone 6 for a disrespectfully discounted price from the service providers ($199.00) I would have been more than happy to upgrade had the updates didnt make the phone so glitchy. For example, when i rotate the phone while texting from vertical to horizontal, one of the following or ALL happens every single time since update.
1.screen turns black
2.it records an audio text on its own
3.half the keyboard disappears
4.the texts appear to continue across the screen repetitively mirroring them
5.that bar onto of the keyboard to help with words you're possibly spelling blinks and opens and closes by its self
6.while texting horizontal and receiving notification of another text the screen freezes, and the notification appears opposite of the position of the phone.
7.the safari history never clears after i clear data and history in the settings.
I think thats all of them, but maybe 2 more. Anyway, this is ridiculous change from the update, its embarrassing to complain about these problems in front of the now 2 people out of 37 that have samsung and LG phones. Its really dissappointing and very unexpecting for me as I've never experienced such problems in the time I've owned iPad mini, iPod, iMac, and iPhone. I have atlas 3 friends that have switched to Samsungs and LG phones because of these very problems i listed above. APPLE REDEEM YOURSELVES, THIS IS WAY BELOW YOUR REPUTATION LATELY.

I agree. The issue is the 4S is now 4 generations old, with 32 bit architecture trying to run an operating system designed for 64 bit. The reality is Apple would have been better off not permitting the 4S to upgrade beyond what the 4 can (7.1.2). But then people would have cried and moaned that their device was left in the dust. Technology moves fast and a phone that is now 4 years out, just isn't going to handle the iOS like a newer phone.

Table has 80 million records - Performance impact if we stop archiving

I have a table (Oracle 11g) which has around 80 million records till now we used to do weekly archiving to maintain size. But now one of the architect at my firm suggested that oracle does not have any problem with maintaining even billion of records with just a few performance tuning.
I was just wondering is it true and moreover what kind of effect would be their on querying and insertion if table size is 80 million and increasing every day ?
Any comments welcomed.

What is true is that Oracle database can manage tables with billions of rows but when talking about data size you should give table size instead of number of rows because you wont't have the same table size if the average row size is 50 bytes or if the average row size is 5K.
About performance impact, it depends on the queries that access this table: the more data queries need to process and/or to return as result set, the more this can have an impact on performance for these queries.
You don't give enough input to give a good answer. Ideally you should give DDL statements to create this table and its indexes and SQL queries that are using these tables.
In some cases using table partitioning can really help: but this is not always true (and you can only use partitioning with Entreprise Edition and additional licensing).

IPhone 4 has serious jerky choppy performance since uploading IOS 5. Scrolling through photos jerks; Roadmate voice commands are broken in a staccato fashion; Screen game play is very jerky - Everything is choppy!!

I have read many messages regarding choppy and jerky performance going back to 4.3.1 Has anyone else noticed this with the recent IOS 5 upgrade? Any recommended solutions??

My project's JDK upgrades from 1.4 to 5.0. As the programs are still in the 1.4 standard, lots of warnings appears such as variables define...
It makes my project's performance very bad. With 1.4, my project can complete processing in 15 minutes, but now it needs over 20 minuts with jdk5.0. When I use @suppress warning to ignore those wranings, the performance improves to 14 minutes.
Why the warnings have bad influence on the performance? will the JDK write log if there are warning???

Generating statistics has negative impact on performance

We have a strange situation with our COPA CE4XXXX table. When database statistics are generated (DB20) for this table, we immediately notice a very significant performance drop when selecting from this table. In orer to correct this, if we adjust/rebuild the index of the table using the database utility tool, it seems to resolve the issue. Either way, the indexes that Oracle chooses for the query we are monitoring does not change, but performance is decreased after new statistics are generated.
The Oracle version is 9.2.0.8.0, and the statistics were generated with method 'E' sample 'P25'.
Any clues?

i am not quite sure about Oracle 9i, DB20 and the index rebuild.
Please check the options which are given to the REBUILD index command by SAP.

I am only sure about Oracle 10g (because there is always a compute).. maybe your gathered statistics with method 'E' sample 'P25' are not good enough.. or this is maybe a bug.
But without the execution plans, statistic data and the exact commands that are generated in the background.. it is really hard to say.

Cannot export from Lightroom 5.6 to jpg, Internal error has occurred, attempt to perform arithmetic on a nil value

Hi everybody,
I run Lightroom 5.6 on Windows 8.1. It's been a while since I exported anything and now I find that I cannot export to JPG.
I get an internal error, " attempt to perform arithmetic on a nil value" .
I remember that I used to have this situation before (different error) with previous versions. Than it was usually the "perform after export" that was without value.
However it is set ti " Do nothing" .
I've searched the web and found nothing. Anyone got an idea what the cause could be?

Hi there,
so I found something! I was wondering why the "publish on harddrive" process did work, but the export to harddrive not.
So I looked in the difference of the presettings and found only the different options "choose export folder" and "predefined export folder" (don't know the exact translations, as I use the german version, but I hope you find what I mean.)
So I changed in the export settings the export folder to a fix predefined folder and there you are, export is working again!
Don't know the relation to the GPS-data, but anyhow.
Hope this helps to solve the problem?
Don't know if MS windows did an update which causes the error, but I didn't changed anything in lightroom as it worked before without these settings.
And of course in the long rund I would like to go back to the "choose folder" option, as I know have to copy the images to the right folder after export which is not a smooth process..

Has the minimal (max performance) CD install worked well for you,or n

I'm just trying to get my system setup for the best performance possible. I found something interesting... there's only 2 more services that install when you go the full route vs. minimal (max performance) route. To be exact, it's these:
DLLML.EXE (2 instances)
VolPanel.exe
Now what's interesting to me, is in my previous testing... I found my performance DECREASED when I disabled all the Creative Labs services. It decreased in every benchmark I ran (3dMark 200-2006 and PCMark 2004-2005 benches).
Now I could test everything with each version... minimal(max performance) vs. full install... but that would be moot if people are having issues with the minimal (max performance) install. So, thanks for the feedback!

If it worked OK for you (max install vs. minimum performance install) please say it did. If not, then please say what was wrong.
