10.5.7 Hosed my admin account!  Help.

Hi all-
Having installed 10.5.7, I can no longer launch many programs in my admin account. This is not the case in any of my three limited user accounts. In the admin account, some dock icons are replaced by the generic "apps" icon, and I cannot launch finder, safari, and numbers to name a few. I cannot even double click on a disk image. When I try to launch an app like safari, the warning I get is: "You cannot open the application "(null)" because it may be damaged or incomplete." It sounds like the install went bad - but just on this admin account. So, I logged into a limited user account and downloaded the 10.5.7 combo update and reinstalled. No luck. Any ideas?
I have a very recent time machine backup, but it was completed while the system was at 10.5.6. If I restore from a TM backup, is this going to cause a problem because the system is now at 10.5.7? Thanks in advance for your the help.

Hi,
Lot's of people appear to be having problems with this new update (thus I'm holding off with installing it...)
The easiest way to rollback Mac OS X is to boot from the Leopard install DVD
when you reach to screen to specify the destination for the installation choose the boot volume (the one with Mac OS X on it).
Click the "options" button at the bottom left; here choose "Archive and Install", ensuring to preserve User's and Network settings (it is automatically enabled by default)
Click OK to install the new system.
After the installation is complete, look for the folder called Previous System on your hard disk; this will contain the archived version of Leopard. Open it up to check that there are no files in there that you need, after which it’s safe to delete it (it’s probably better to leave the Previous System folder in place for a few days, just in case).
Incidentally, you might need to reinstall some third-party applications after an Archive and Install reinstallation, but it’s simpler – and usually quicker - than a complete reformat.
Hope that helps you.
Kind Regards,
Peter.

Hi, I am having the problem where I had a friend use my computer who was messing with it and got into the netinfo manager and he messed with the account settings under users. And he changed my short name and my home folder. Now I am not set as an administrator and cant even access any setting on my computer I am set as a standart account. Is there any way or any other admin account that is in the os, that I could use to change my status or anything else that could help thanks.

  • Can't start laptop - problems with automatic repair, need acces to admin account but there is none. HELP! :(

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my windows 8 laptop.
This afternoon I shut it down, and went to work. A few hours later when I came back home I noticed the little blue lights on the keyboard (showing me that the pc was charging and that my wifi is on) were still on. Normally these are off when the pc is turned
    off.
I tried starting the laptop but nothing happened, the screen stayed black. I held down the 'on' button to force it to turn off, and turned it on again.
I then got a textmessage on the startup loading screen that there were problems with my C drive (only drive the laptop has), so it went to automatic repair.
*my laptop's language is set to Dutch so I'm translating everything :)*
    It gave me 2 options:
    1: Restart computer
    2: Advanced options.
I tried option 1, didnt work ofcourse, it just restarted and I got back to this screen, so I checked what option 2 had to offer.
I got to a screen with 3 options:
    1: Continue to windows 8
    2: Solve Problems
    3: Shut down
When I tried option 1 the computer just restarted and went back to the same screen.
When I tried option 3 it shut down as it should.
Option 2 gave me 3 other options:
    1: Renew PC
    2: Factory reset
    3: advanced options
Option 1 just restarted my pc and took me back to screen 1.
Option 2 I havent tried yet, because it erases all of my files. This is a last resort.
Option 3 gave me 6 other options:
    1: Systemrepair
    2: Repair with installationcopy
    3: Startuprepair
    4: CMD
    5: UEFI firmware settings
    6. Startupsettings.
I can't use option 1,2,3,4 because I need to log in to an administratoraccount.
The bad part is: the laptop doesn't have an administratoraccount.
It was my parents laptop, and theyve set it up. I always assumed the account was an admin because
I had acces to everything and didn't need a password to run things as admin and such.
    Turns out it isn't.
I get this message (translated) when I try to acces one of these:
'You have to log in as administrator to continue, but this pc doesn't have an administratoraccount'.
I can't believe microsoft added a check to see if the pc has an admin account on it, and even added a specific message to show when it doesn't, but they didnt add the option to just use these tools when there is no admin account present? What were they thinking!
Option 5 I havent tried yet, when I click it it says I have to restart to acces these settings, but I dont want to mess with something I know nothing about.
Option 6 gives me a few options like run the pc in safety mode, run windows repair and disable auto-restart after something has gone wrong with windows. But when I select one of these options it doesnt work. It just takes me back to auto repair. It just doesn't
    doe anything.
There are no other options. Nothing I can do. My pc is stuck like this. The only thing I *might* be able to do is a factory reset, but I havent tried, and that could also just give me an error about me not being admin.
Some backstory of what I think caused this problem:
I believe the problems started a week ago, last friday.
I'm using a program called 'AVG TuneUp'. This program gave me a message telling me it was 3 months since it had checked my C drive for defects or anything. And it asked me if I wanted it to do so. Unknowing of the problems that would follow, I pressed 'ok'
    (or whatever it was).
I had to restart my pc for it to begin, because it could only check the drive during startup. It went to 12% and stayed there for like half an hour, after which I decided to google (on my phone) if that was normal. It turned out that that option doesn't work
well with windows 8 and that lots of people's computers got ruined after using it. I stressed and I tried to shut it down, but since I was still in startup the only thing I could do was force the pc to shut down, so I held down the power button and it shut
down. I restarted and managed to abort the proces. The laptop started fine and everything worked.
A few days later a game/program I use called League of Legends started to act weird, because I could not log in on my account (for the game) anymore. Some error with IE settings, which I was unable to fix. For more info about that go to http://boards.eune.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/help-support-en/8Eoz315J-cant-log-in-to-lol-and-cant-log-in-to-steam-either-weird-coincidence.
Although I doubt it will help.
That forum post also contains a link to a post I made on the Steam forum about not being able to log into steam anymore. (Steam is another program I used). I wasn't able to log into steam anymore about 1-2 days after I wasn't able to log into LoL.
Also at the same time my Norton sortof stopped working. It showed up as active in my task manager and AVG TuneUp program manager, but it wasn't in my task bar and I couldnt acces the control panel.
Then yesterday I checked my pc for errors with AVG TuneUp's 1-click maintenance tool, and it told me my C drive was fragmented badly, so I defragmented it using the tool. Laptop still worked fine after that.
And then today I got the error on startup about my C drive having errors.
Long story shot: Problem is probably caused because I stopped the repair of my C drive with the avg tuneup tool before it was done, however its weird that I'm only experiencing (big) problems a week after that happened.

But I don't really understand what the answering person is saying, and my laptop doesn't have a CD drive..
I really, REALLY hope someone can help me with this, because my laptop is basically 100% 'destroyed'.

    Hello,
Perhaps the operating system is incorrectly powering down or shifting the wireless adapter to a low power state in order to improve run time while on battery?
Try going into the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), locate the wireless adapter under the Network Adapters tree, view its Properties, and on the Power Management tab, disable (un-check) the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.
Please let us know if that makes any difference (or not).

  • I made a mess of my admin accounts need to consolodate please help :)

Hello so i've been having this issue with my main admin account... for about a year now there have been items stuck in my trash folder and safari crashes after a bit. i've taken my computer to apple store and they cannot fix they told me to reinstall OS with disk but when i try to do that it times out... out of frustration i created a new admin account and what do you know i do not have the same issues with the trash... so i copied all the mail folders, preferences and address books over but the passwords didnt follow... so i was only able to get mail on the accounts i could remember the passwords to... so i was using the other account and kind of going back and forth to the old account but now i'm having even more issues with the second account... my macbook pro is all kinds of screwy ...
i need to consolidate the mail i have on both admin accounts... because i have to go back to using the main admin account and i want to transfer all the mail i've been receiving on the other account for the past 2 months to the old account.
    can someone please help?

Ok so i figured out what to do (through lots of research and headaches) just thought i'd share my solution... i needed to consolidate two admin applemail accounts with the same email accounts and i forgot all of my passwords...
    # To back up Mail preferences (i only did this on my main admin account seeing as though the secondary had the same exact preferences). (i'd suggest also backing up addressbook info as well...)
    1. Create a uniquely-named folder on your desktop (or other favorite location- like an external drive). For example, you might call it "Mail Prefs Backups May152005" (adding a date is a good idea).
    2. Quit Mail if it's running.
    3. In the Finder choose Home from the Go menu.
    4. Open the Library folder.
    5. Open the Preferences folder.
    6. Copy the "com.apple.mail.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file. Don't remove the original file from its current location (this file contains your Mail accounts information).
    7. Close the Preferences folder.
    8. Open the Mail folder.
    9. Copy the "MessageRules.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (this file contains your Mail rules).
    10. Copy the "SmartMailboxes.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (you guessed it, this file contains Smart Mailboxes information).
    11. Finally, copy the Signatures folder to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the folder. (Your custom signatures, if you use them, are stored here.)
#manually back up Mail messages (i first did a backup of the MAIN admin account on my external drive so that i made sure i didnt accidentally remove any files... then i manually went into each "inbox"/"outbox"/"drafts" of each account and added each email- emails here are only identified with a unique set of numbers and date/times in the info field- that was not in the MAIN admin account to the copy mail account located on my external drive -yes this was VERY tedious- also i had folders that i had to consolidate so i made sure i didnt miss those)
    1. Quit Mail if it's open.
    2. From the Finder's Go menu, choose Home.
    3. Open the Library folder.
    4. Copy the folder "Mail" to your backup location, such as a different volume or burnable disc. Important: Do not remove the Mail folder from ~/Library. If you're backing up to the same volume, hold the Option key as you drag the folder to make a copy instead of moving it (a "+" cursor appears).
once i got all this i took all the files i copied/consolidated on my external drive and replaced all the original files in the new Admin account i created (I have to create a new MAIN admin account because the original main admin account is corrupt the second one also has some of the same issues because i was rushing through copying all of the plist/library files over without inspecting each...)
    NEXT
    * i forgot all the passwords to my email accounts...
    Keychains
Keychains are located in your ~/Library/Keychains/ folder. To get to this file in the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu. Open the Library folder, then open the Keychains folder.
i copied that file and backed it up on my external... also i opened it up and found all the passwords i forgot
so this problem for me is solved...
PS the KeyChain is AWESOME! i use firefox and none of those passwords are saved to the keychain but there is an addon password extractor u can export usernames and passwords from firefox with this addon and ad them to your keychain...

  • Changed Permissions - Need Help - Can't Hide Admin Account

Help... I was trying to find a way to change some system icons, and found some commands online. The icons changed successfully but now my Administrator account shows up when I log in. Prior to this the admin account was hidden and only my user account was displayed at the login. Below are the commands used to change the icons:
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources
    sudo mkdir BACKUPS
    sudo cp *.png BACKUPS/
    sudo chmod o+w *.png
    open .
After doing this in terminal I was able to access the icon files and modify them. But now how do I return the permissions back to the system ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, for some reason the Terminal commands indicated they worked ok but did not hide the Administrator account at the login screen. What I did find on the web that worked is, in OS X there is an app called "Property List Editor" which allows you to hide and unhide accounts through a GUI based editor. This app works really well, and there is plenty of documentation regarding this app online. Also it allows you to add or remove the "Other" option at the login screen which will allow you to login into the hidden accounts, this appears very useful for security since you can hide as many accounts as you like. Hope this helps anyone else with this problem, and once again thanks to those of you who have offered suggestions.

  • Admin account switched to standard with Lepard instal, please help!!

I'll try to make this quick and easy. I have a mac mini that came with 10.4.5. I continuously performed updates and had no problems until July. In July my computer completely crashed so I reinstalled 10.4.5. After the install I could not get the updates to work, I even went back and tried the the first update for 10.4.5. (Important note) at this time my admin account was still active and working. So with the computer not updating I decided to install Leopard. The Leopard update was successful except for the fact that my admin account was changed to a standard account. This is where the problems really starts. Please keep in mind that I have weeks of research into my problem and every solution I've tried so far has not worked. Here are just a few examples of what I have tried. I have tried to enable the root user through directory utility, accounts, 10.4.5 install disk utility reset password and a couple of other methods that I cant think of off the top of my head. Now hear are the problems I'm having. Some of the enable root options require an admin account and password. Other enable root options require that I go to certain files or folders to enable the root but with this option I don't have that file or folder and/or it does not work due to the fact that my computer is 10.4.5 and not 10.5 and newer. Now the last couple of options require that I run the install disc to reset password or that I trash everything and start from new. The problem with this is I can't get the install disk to run. I have tried to insert the disk, click on the install icon but it requires an admin name and password to preform a restart. I have kept the install disk in the drive and have performed restart and shut down/power up from the apple menu. I have powered down and back up with the power button. Now keep in mind that I have tried every option without holding down the "C" key and with holding down the "C" key with no results. So to sum this last bit up, no matter how I try to restart the computer the install disk will not run and my computer will boot up like normal and bring me to the desk top. One more note, I have tried all the restart options with the 10.4.5 disk and the leopard disc. At this point I want to start from scratch and perform an install of 10.4.5. At this point it does not mater if I loose everything since it is all backed up on an external HD. Please help I am open to all ideas and options.
    Thanks, Dan

Dan, does it stat in Single User Mode? If so, we can get a new admin User.

"OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
    /sbin/fsck -fy Enter
    /sbin/mount -uaw Enter
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone Enter
    # The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    # Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot Enter
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

  • Help with understanding initial admin account vs. directory admin

    Hello,
I am hoping someone can help me understand the initial admin account created when I was first configuring my server, and the directory admin.
I have setup an advanced server, and when I was going through the initial setup I created an account that for this discussion I'll call "admin." Once the initial setup was finished I started using Workgroup manager to create accounts. I was informed that I should create a different directory admin so I did and for this discussion we'll call that account "diradmin."
I am curious why the initial account of admin does not show up in workgroup manager, and why it does not show up as an option in Server Admin to assign permissions.
    Is this making any sense?
    Any explanation is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Scott

    Hi
Presumably you used the Server Setup Assistant to configure Services prior to bringing the Server online?
Not a good idea really. When choosing Advanced after the Server Software has been installed don't enable/configure any service apart from Remote Desktop. Once the Server setup is complete run all available updates. Once you've done that begin to configure required Services using Server Admin. Once you've done that begin to populate your directory nodes with users using WorkGroup Manager.
The key to understanding the two accounts (a) System Administrator (admin UID 501) and (b) Directory Administrator (diradmin UID 100) is understanding which directory node you want to provide services to. The 'Local' node and the server in general (putting aside the super user 'root') will always be admin. Once you promote the Server from Standalone to OD Master you effectively create another Directory in addition to the Local one. This LDAP Directory can be used for all sorts of things. Principally enabling directory and contact information (amongst other things) to be shared/accessed with users that exist in that node with an enhanced authentication system (Kerberos) not available in the Local node and if the Server is in a Standalone Role. This LDAP Directory is controlled by diradmin. You won't be able to use admin for the LDAP node but you can use diradmin for the server in general - although I would not advise it. You can use root for both nodes - again I would not advise it unless absolutely necessary. Basically use admin to log into the Server and do the day to day stuff and use diradmin for the LDAP. Get into the habit of never having both applications open unless you are going to use them. Once you are done, quit out of them and leave them alone.
To toggle between the two Directory nodes launch Workgroup Manager and click on the small blue globe below the main set of icons at the top and above the Users/Groups/Machines tabs. You should see at least 4 selections: Local, /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1, Search Policy and Other. If you don't see /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 select Other and browse for it. If you still don't see it then you effectively don't have an OD Master. This will severely limit the ability of server to provide auot-mounting networked home folders as well as access to iCal Server's features amongst other things.
Finally if you truly want LDAP and everything that goes with it then your DNS Service - wherever its placed - has to be correctly conigured and tested. This link is for a post that explains how to achieve this simply using the interface:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1251475&tstart=45
Depending on your network environment it might not be appropriate for you? However stick with it as it is a long post and you may find it useful?

  • Lost Admin Account - Only Standard ones remain... Please Help!

Okay this one is a real kicker, About 10 months ago I helped a friend upgrade their iMac 1.6 G5 to Leopard. All went well and they installed all the updates etc.
A few month ago the Logic Board failed and they got a local Apple Engineers firm to replace the new logic board. They did this and the machine runs fine... however.
They now want help setting up a time machine drive, but... and here is comes... the accounts on the machine... all of them are Standard accounts. None of them are Administration accounts.
So the time machine setting are locked, I click the padlock to unlock and I get prompted for admin Username and Password... both fields are blank. SO I check in the Accounts settings to find that both Users on the machine are Standard and neither have Admin writes.
I can only presume that the company that replaced the logic board, created a new admin account, reset the other accounts to standard, did the work, then deleted the Admin account they created and forgot to reset the Standard accounts back to admin (I have spoken them and they deny all knowledge). before giving it back to my friend.
Is there anyway to find out what the Admin account details are...? Or maybe even root details... (in terminal) so I can at least unlock the User control panel and reset the user accounts back to admin.
Please help with this one... I didn't even know it was possible to run a MAc without an admin account?!

Then, try the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1274 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1323191 If nothing there works, then your only solution is to make copies of the Users and Applications folders to another disk, wipe the current one, reinstall the OS, create a new admin user account, use the migration assistant to transfer the Users to the machine, change their status to admin, ensure that works, and delete the new account. Do the same with the Applications or reinstall them. Once you sort things out, make a bootable backup/clone on an ext HD so this never occurs again.

  • Help !! I lost my only admin account and I don't have the root

    Hello evrybody
I bought a MacBook and I was very happy with it. But I played whith the netinfo and I changed my only admin account's short name then it turned into a standard account.
I did not active the root account and I have the two CDs , but when i boot frome the CD I only have one option which is updating the system.
    Anybody can help me ??

    Hi Saudi.
    OOOPS!
If your daily cron job hasn't run since you modified the netinfo DB, you can reload from the "dump" of it taken each day.
Boot your system single-user (Apple-S) at startup. Type mount -uw / and then ls -l /var/backups/local.nidump. Check the date. Is it a copy of the unmodified DB?
If so, Follow the instructions here to reload the DB from the dump.
    Good luck,
    John

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

It always has a crash log with a crashed thread that says the same basic things
I've got so much stuff in this one user account that I'd really like to avoid having to transfer everything to another user account unless there's an uncomplicated way of doing it. I've already started stuffing my pics and songs into my shared folder for dragging around later.
Any help to fix the problem in my admin account's instance of Mail would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks!

It looks to me as though your Launch Services database may be corrupted and need to be reset, which you can do by downloading Onyx for your system and running the Maintenance > Reset section, making sure to check the box to reset the LaunchServices database. You should, of course, quit all running applications while you're doing this.
But I'm puzzled as to why you are running Mail in the Admin account; you should never be running anything in that account unless you're performing a system administration task. You risk security and hosing your entire system by being in there; everything else on your Mac depends on that account working normally. If you need to use Mail, you need to create a separate user account just for you.

  • How Do I create an Admin account?

    Hi
This sounds silly but.... How do I set up an administrator account ?
I am using DW CS3 and ADDT and PHPMYADMIN
I can create a table with a level_user field and al the other usual fields
I can use the login wizard and / or the ADDT control panel to set and add user levels so I have added user and admin levels and I can figure out the rest I think but h I have read many tutorials and I still can't figure out how to create an admin account? I have thought I have to create a temp form with a level field just to upload my admin level into the user_level field in my database table, say level "1" and then creat another form with no user level field for users to upload their info and have their level set by the default value in the login wizard say level "2"
Does this sound like the correct way to go about thing?
Is there a better more logical way to do this?
I have asked this question in the nonrmal dreamweaver and I was told to
"Use a frontend like PHPMyAdmin to construct the db and set one of the account's user levels to something like "admin" instead of "y" or whatever and then filter on "admin."
I really don't understand this as I only want to set acces levels to one table so that I can delete records as administrator and so that noone else can access certain pages
    Anyone got any ideas?
Any help would be more than helpful
    Have a nice day

    Hi Charis,
I have asked this question in the nonrmal dreamweaver and I was told to
"Use a frontend like PHPMyAdmin to construct the db and set one of the account's user levels to something like "admin" instead of "y" or whatever and then filter on "admin."
folks in the regular DW forums don´t necessarily know how ADDT handles the "user levels", so here´s my suggestion:
    a) create the ADDT "login" table with PhpMyAdmin, add one default record
(probably your own account) and set its "level_usr" column´s value to "1"
    b) add this very column to ADDT´s array of session variables within the Control Panel and name it, say "kt_level"
I really don't understand this as I only want to set acces levels to one table so that I can delete records as administrator and so that noone else can access certain pages
once you have the additional session variable "kt_level" defined, you can always filter against this one -- for example...
    a) in a "Show If Conditional Region"
    (for hiding certain page elements)
    b) in a "Restrict Access To Page" behaviour
(to prevent access to a whole page)
and then creat another form with no user level field for users to upload their info and have their level set by the default value in the login wizard say level "2"
    that´s a good approach :-)
    Cheers,

  • I can't login to admin account properly after installing Lion

It's been a week since I installed OS X Lion and everything was fine until a couple of days ago. When I was logging in to my account (an admin account), I could not get past the gray screen with the spinning rainbow wheel, or my desktop would show up but doesn't show any progress. I've already tried booting on Safe Mode and it worked, except that the audio input/output were disabled. I tried logging in to the other accounts and I didn't experience any problems. Please help me, I really don't know what I should do to fix and resolve this problem. Thanks in advance!

    Hi rodeo21
Did you enable this particular admin account when you enable FileVault?
Have a look at STEP 2 on this page: http://www.macworld.com/article/1162999/complete_guide_to_filevault_2_in_lion.ht ml
