10.5.7 No More Accounts w/o Homes?

hi,
with 10.5.7 server, i've noticed that one can no longer authenticate to OD accounts unless those accounts have a home directory associated with it.
one used to be able to create an account w/o a home and the system would create a "99" folder on the workstation.
anyone else notice this? any way around it?
thanks.

Hi
This used to be the way it 'worked' in 10.4. Users created in the LDAP node but with no defined home folder would receive a temporary 99 folder on successful login with a networked account. AFAIK this functionality was removed since Leopard was released. Reid mentions a way of re-instating this ability in this thread which you could try:

If I've understood your post correctly what would be the point? If you want one-shot 'guest' access use what's built into Leopard Client OS. Personally I thought this 'feature' was slightly messy with the potential for data loss. The whole point about Open Directory (and Active Directory) is to use server hosted roaming profiles.
If you want locally created LDAP homes use Mobile Accounts. PHDs are actually a good idea for desktops as well. They should not be thought of as only for laptops.

  • Is it possible to link two or more accounts without merging?

Is it possible to link two or more accounts without merging? For example: give access for apple id [email protected] (obviously fake and is used by John) to apple id [email protected] (also obviously fake and is used by Rose). This would only allow access from one consenting party to another, for temporary sharing.
The accounts would be temporarily linked/paired in the same manner as a bluetooth device (device A shows the user a password to input into device B) except John receives password abc123 and Rose receives password xyz789. they exchange passwords and can use this to do multiple things, such as; pool money to buy a game, a movie, or a song album, or they could share an app or two with each other.
Is there any feature in apple remotely like this in any way? If so please let me know how I can find or use this feature.
If not, I would recommend implementing this in the future, if not the near future. There are a lot of people that would use it, and it could allow app designers to make more money, because people would be able to buy something by pooling their money. If you think otherwise, ask anybody who lives in an apartment with three other people, because that is the only way they can afford it.

You cannot merge or link accounts.
    Sorry.

  • Add more "Account Types" in chart of account

    Hi,
would it possible to add more account types to the "Account Type" drop down, and anyone who has an idea on how to do it?
It would of course be possible to catch the FORM_LOAD event for the form and add additional ValidValues, and in a similar way catch the FORM_CLOSE event and manually save the value to the DB, but this would probably cause problems in other modules using the value..?!
    TIA
    Martin Korsbro

I don't think it will be possible without breaking the data integrity of SBO.
The product has processing built in based on the 3 standard values (BoAccountTypes Enumeration), if you were to provide an alternate value it would probably cause exceptions in standard SBO screens and lead to some difficult issues for support.
It would be better to add a User Defined Field to the Chart of Accounts and specify the list of values you want there.
    John.

  • One or more accounts provided could not be validated

I am trying to install the second node in the same management group of scom 2012. but I keep running into the error
one or more accounts provided could not be validated.
the account is the system center data access service account
any ideas ? The account is not locked out.

Check that this account has sufficient rights on the maangement server. local admin could be nice. Also try to startup a program such as notepas or whatever using the Run as DIfferent User option and type the credentials. Dont forget to place the domain
name as well as domain\sdkaccount (and do not copy/paste into those fields! Manually type everything in that wizard.

  • Unable to access one or more accounts message

I keep getting an alarm sound with the message displayed on the main unit that said "Unable to access one or more accounts" . I got it about 3 or 4 times a day, and don't know what it was about. Could someone help me on this. I would appreciate it very much.

Come to that the best I've ever done is get it to down load mail, think that was the N900 not the N5800, have never got it to send!
Sorry no help to you OP but at least your not alone!

  • More than one network home directory? (newbie question)

I have a brand new shiny XServer for a small school. They wanted their Macs managed and secured so I eagerly started moving ahead with it. Now, because of the specific file sharing requirements of the school (teachers want access to student accounts and files for homework and such) I created a standard, by-the-book Network Home folder. Then I thought about it, and I shared another directory as a Network User Home folder. And now none of my networked user accounts can log in. They all give me "can't log in, there is an error".
Is what I did possible? Allowed? Recommended? Discouraged? Can you actually define two separate Network User Home folders on the same server, and then assign different users to different home folders? My server crapped out and now I may have to wipe/reinstall the whole thing to fix it.
Does anybody have any experience with home folders like that?
Any information would be dearly appreciated,
    Thanks.

Each user can have one and only one home directory, network or local. (Yes, even if you use Mobile Accounts or Portable Homes each account still has one home directory. You just have multiple copies of the user account and each copy has one home.)
You can have multiple share points that serve as home directory share points. In other words, not all of your users' homes need to be stored in the same place. By "network home directory share point," we mean a shared folder (share point) that has a corresponding dynamic automount record in the directory domain. The share point mounts at /Network/Servers/servername/path/to/sharepoint, and users defined in the directory domain can have their network homes defined there.
If you want to grant a group of teachers (let's call it teachers for simplicity) read/write access to student home directories, I'd suggest the following strategy:
    1. Create two network home directory share points - one to house the students' homes and one to house the teachers' homes. For this example, let's say that the student home directory share point is located at /Volumes/Disk1/StudentHomes.
    2. Create home directories for each student as you normally would.
    3. Then add an ACL that allows members of the teachers group to read/write within the student home directory share point. For our example:
    sudo chmod -R +ai "group:teachers allow readattr,readextattr,readsecurity,list,search,\
    read,execute,writeattr,writeextattr,delete,deletechild,add_file,addsubdirectory,\
    write,append,fileinherit,directoryinherit" /Volumes/Disk1/StudentHomes.
    4. Now teachers simply navigate to /Network/Servers/yourservername/path.../StudentHomes/student's name and dig around to find what they want. (The teachers have read/write control of all student home directories now.)
    5. When your teachers find it a little inconvenient to dig around in each student's home, suggest the following alternative: Simply create a share point to which students have read-only access and teachers can read/write. Within that share point, create "turn-in" folders for each teacher or class, and give students write-only (drop box) permission to the sub-folder. You could get more granular than this simple example where all students can turn anything into any teacher's "turn-in" folder, though.

  • Home Sharing, Network accounts with Portable Home Directories, iTunes 10

I am using OS X Server an on that server is my account. I am also using a MBA with that same account using portable home directories (PHD). The MBA home directory does not contain my iTunes music, that is somewhere in /Users/Shared, because I do not want the added burden of encryption (the home dir is FileVault protected on the MBA, but not on the server)
Thusfar, I worked on the MBA with iTunes and used rsync to sync with the server. There are reasons I want to stop that route (which are not important for the question)
I have just upgraded to iTunes 10 before trying the following:
    1. Enable home sharing on the server
    2. Look for shared libraries on the MBA
And found out that my account on the server needs to be logged in permanently and iTunes running to use Home Sharing that way. That stops the ordinary syncing of PHD so that is not a solution. Besides, I do not want to have an account logged in all the time.
So, given the scenario that I want full two-way syncing of my iTunes library between my computers and that I prefer not to have an account logged in on the server, is there a solution?

I ended up creating a dedicated local account for iTunes serving on my mini server.

If my partner & I both have an iTunes account, can we home share both or somehow combine the two accounts?

As of right now there is no way to combine Apple accounts.
As for "sharing", you can go into the iTunes settings for each and turn on Home Sharing, this will make your music libraries available to each other, provided you are both using different computers.

Yes, but your iTunes library won't automatically show up on a different computer; putting it there is a separate process.

  • Change account username and home folder issue

    Hello guys,
    Apple store re-installed Yosemite v10.10 on my MBA early 2014 (128gb, 4gb)
I wanted to change the account username and the home folder name after installation however I think I did it the wrong way to start with
    Step1
I went into System Preference > User Groups, unlocked padlock, ctrl+click on the admin account > advanced options and replaced account name and home folder name with new name (e.g. my computer). Both match.
Relocked padlock, quit system preferences. Rebooted.
    Step2
Then I realised that what I did, so I have did it all again after reading Change your OS X account name and home directory name - Apple Support
Could you please tell me whether step1 and step2 might have corrupted the operating system (e.g. legacy preferences, etc, etc)? How can I check that?
    Thank you for your support.

    Eric, thank you.
Actually Keychain access app has been malfuncitoning since Yosemite was installed and username and home folders were renamed.
    Sintomps
the following services and apps keeps asking to use "Login" keychain
    - Messages
    - Calendar Agent
    - Safari
    - ScopedBookmarkAgent
    - accountds
    - com.apple.helper
I always lock keychain. Keychain is sync with admin account password. Keychain verified and repaired. No problems found
I have followed this tutorial with no good result
OS X Mavericks v10.9.1: Repeated prompts to unlock "Local Items" keychain  PS: the alpha numeric folder in ~/Library/Keychains/ starts with letter b not letter A as suggested in the tutorial
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password
What are you thoughts? Thank you for your support.

I want to install one more airport in my home to expand coverage. Will the two units still function independently?

You can configure two AirPort Base Stations to operate independently if you so choose, but taken literally that will conflict with your goal of expanding coverage. Why do you ask?

I use Hotmail on my iPad. Yesterday I changed my password on the account using my home PC. Now the ipad requests the new password but when I enter it I get Password Incorrct and it asks to enter it again. The sticky part is that no matter what app I bring up including settings, the password request pop up appears and the app cant' be used

I was going to say either that or to remove the email from your email account settings(on ipad) and put it back on. Happens everytime im forced to change my work email password. I need to delete the account and add it again for it to accept the new password.
