10.5.7=restart=white screen=hard reset

I know some of the threads have been about people not being able to get their display back. My issue is that when I choose restart from the apple menu, I end up with a white blank screen that stays that way until I hard reset my macbook (pressing power until it goes completely off). When I power it back on my display comes back. I sure hope the next update fixes these issues.

This sounds more like an issue with your system installation or computer than with the 10.5.7 update. You might start by doing this if possible:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • White Screen - Hard reset, restore doesn't work

So my iphone just passed it's warranty by 11 days. It is a 3G 8gb. I noticed the white screen thing and googled it. I found out how to do a reset with the home button and power, did that. Fixed it for a brief few minutes. Then white screen again. So I did the restore in itunes. Fixed it for a few minutes, then white screen again. All the functions of my phone work fine. I don't think I have ever dropped the thing. It has a hard case. Anyways, i can play with the phone by trying to bend it and the white screen disappears and goes back to normal. Then the slightest touch will set it back to white. Very strange, its very touch sensitive and I can manipulate it to get it to clear sometimes. My question is what is causing this and can it be fixed without going through apple? I pretty much have to buy a new phone, but upgrade to 3Gs isn't possible for 6 months. Thanks

If an iPhone reset, restoring with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, and restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup does not resolve it, I don't believe you have another option besides going through Apple.
Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange which will include a warranty.

  • HT1459 how to permanently fix white screen after resetting and restoring

How to permanently fix a 'White Screen" after resetting and restoring? 2nd generation ipod

There are two different resets. The reset you did involved holding the sleep/wake & home button.
The other reset will do exactly what it says. That reset is located in Settings - General - Reset.

  • White screen at reset.  Won't start up with install disk.

White Screen persists on restart. Folder with ? appears after a few minutes. Tried safe start - nothing. Tried RAM reset (option, cmd, p, r) - nothing. Tried to restart with C key to use install disk, C drive powers and spins for awhile - nothing. Thought its was hard drive but, wouldn't install disk by pass that?
    No outside devices plug in.
Son's computer, he plug in iphone and it wouldn't show on desktop so he reset the computer and now this.
    Help!

I have the same issue. I had noticed over previous weeks that the fan seemed to be on quite a lot when the computer was just left idling. Anyway- there is now an odd repetitive intermittent clicking as it tries to start up. Get nothing then the ? folder. I have tried all the tips in the manual. Managed to load utilities disk and there is no recognition of the HD at all. All a bit worrying...
Related questions- (1) are my iPod touch photos saved in full resolution on the iPod (or do you still have to enable the iPod for this?) (2) Can I download them from the iPod to another computer. (3) Can I do the same with iTunes?
If anyone has had a similar experience and been to an engineer / service provider I would love to hear what was found, and whether the HD was recoverable.
    Many thanks all-

  • White screen? Resetting doesn't work

I've tried resetting like a million times! Still nothing, my screen is still white. I have the 160GB. I won't restore because thats over 24,000 songs gone. I dropped it today on the pavement, it wasn't even a hard drop. Can someone tell me how to fix this please?

    - Try connecting to comutr and then try to restor.
    - If still white screen, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try the reset and restore again.

  • ITouch stucked at completly black screen (hard reset doesn't help)

My iPod touch 4G is stucked at completly black screen, with no apple logo at all.
This happened after restoring my iPod touch.
Also hard resetting (holding home+power for 10 seconds doesn't work),  LCD isn't dead as I got it to go white when restoring.
Now I can't even restore. I always get error 1600. But I can't reboot to solve it.   If I do so, it doesn't show apple logo, but just keep black screen.
    It's mega urgent.

Error 1600, 1601, 1602: Try the following steps to resolve this error:
Ensure proper USB isolation troubleshooting has been performed, and test with a known-good cable.
Follow the steps listed for Error 1604.
This error may be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.
Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

Sounds like it's broken, doesn't it?  Bring it to Apple for evaluation.

  • White Screen after resetting

    Symptoms:
The unit displayed a white screen.
I applied the technique of pressing center of click wheel plus menu to reset it.
The display was still a white screen
Then went to center button+menu followed by center button + play
    Still got a white screen
Used iTunes to restore to factory settings.
the result was a display that was rolling.
Used the combination of buttons - center+menu followed by center+play and the unit appeared to reset. Apple logo appeared and display came up stable.
I was able to use the device as expected.
    Unplugged it from the computer
After a few hours turned on the device and its back to displaying a white screen.
Any suggestions as to what might be the cause of the problem?
    Thanks

Make sure it is charged for about 10min using the adapter, then connect in recovery mode, explained in this article:

  • Update lion after restart white screen, no logo

    I have a 2 weeks old:
MacBook Pro 15", Intel Core i7 Quad 2.2 GHz
Yesterday i tried to update Lion with the update apple released that day. It downloaded the update and it asked me to restart the computer. After hitting the restartbutton my screen turned white. The only thing left was the mouse arrow.
I waited at least an hour but nothing happend. I tried to restart my computer pressing the on/off button. It tried to restart but got stuck at the startupscreen with the apple logo. Today i had to reboot my computer and installed lion again. Finally i got back on my desktop. But the software update still asked me to instal the new macosx. So i tried again. And now i have this white screen again.
What can i do to fix this?

i called apple today and i got this problem fixed
I was not able to restart my computer so I had to hold down the alt key when i turned on my computer. Than these 2 harddrives appeard and i had to choose "recovery harddrive"
In the next step i could choose in a menu to reinstall os lion. So i did.. That took almost 2 hours.
Ik finally got back in my computer.
In the menu "system updates" i still got the announcement of a new Mac OSX update. But also 4 other updates.
    • lion recovery update
    • update remote desktop
    • itunes
    • something with raw files
The lady on the phone told me to seperately install these updates and that did the trick.
There seemed to be a conflict between those updates. I dont know why. But she told me that i had to install the small updates first and the recovery update as 4th and as last the mac osx update.
So maybe if you reboot your computer with the alt key and try to install lion again, and than install the updates seperately it will work. And the most important thing.. Your files will still be on your computer. You wont lose anything by doing this.

  • White screen wont reset

My facebook app went wonky and froze up. I tried turning the ipod off and the screen went all white. I have tried holding down the round button and the top button at the same time for more than 10 seconds. No results. No results from plugging it into a charger or itunes. The screen is just white, on, and the device is getting very warm.

All you can do is to let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour, try the reset and connect to your computer and try to resiore via iTunes as necessary. If still problem you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is necessary.

  • Nokia 6230i white screen. needs reset?

    hi all,
I recently got my Nokia 6230i a bit wet. I put it up in the sun and it worked fine for sometime, but then the screen went completely blank. Everythin in the phone works well except the screen.
I've found out that resetting might help. How can I reset my phone?
    Can anyone help?

    Hi Sanedevil,
Resetting the phone will almost certainly not work, and if you were to do so, you would also loose all the data in the phone.
The problem is almost certainly due to the fact it got wet.
Although you said it did work for a while, the LCD, circuit board and components have probably been slowly corroding and this is what has caused the screen to go white.
Changing the LCD might work, but a reset will certainly not.
    hope this helps.
My posts are my opinion and in no way the direct views of Nokia.

  • Ipod touch not responding blank white screen cant reset please help?

    Please Help!!
I Just got the new a new ipod touch which was working fine.  I began updating to new apple software and while doing so I lost internet connection and ipod was unplugged.  Now all I get is a blank white or green screen even after reset.  The ipod won't even register when plugged into computer or itunes.  What can I do?? If I wait until the battery dies and run a restore will it work?? If so How do I get the games back I purchased recently? Please help I'm pretty new to all this.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Apple iMac 20" Intel Core Duo 2007 (October) - White Screen Bootup

Hello guys, apologies if anyone has opened a thread similar to this. I know its a common problem but I haven't got a clear answer.
Basically, I bought an iMac today off eBay 'spares or repair'. Knowingly, it has a white screen at boot problem. I though to myself, I know abit about Macs ie resetting PRAM, SMC, boot keys to force boot from USB, DVD etc. However nothing I have tried is working. This is what I have experienced so far...
    * Turn iMac on, chord chimes once. Computer enters white screen but with NO APPLE LOGO, and NO CURSER. It looks as if its about to boot up. But nothing, it doesn't get past this stage. As I write this, my screen has been white for the past 30 minutes no change.
*I can hear a fan kicking in, or it maybe the hard drive...im not sure. However certainly no clicks, grinding, whirring sounds.
*Reset PRAM holding alt, apple, P, R. It goes through the chimes x 3. When buttons are released, it again stalls at white screen.
*Reset SMC, unplugged all peripherals and power overnight. Held down power for 10-20 seconds. No change.
*Have removed RAM, turned on computer and I get loud electronic beeps indicating the logic board recognises no RAM. Could be a good sign the logic board has signs of life? Also tried swapping RAM sticks around, no change.
*Tried booting form DVD, holding CMD C, also CMD D...nothing works. However the keyboard definitely works because I can eject the disc. So the computer is showing signs of life, just no display.
*Tried booting from USB stick with OSX Lion pre installed, holding down OPTION did nothing.
*The previous owner told me he replaced the graphics card with a known good one. So it kind of rules that out, but this doesn't look like a graphics problem to me. But I'm no expert!
I read somewhere on another forum that the hard drive can fail in such a way, that you cannot boot from another device. So if it fails, your only option is to unplug the hard drive so it forces the computer to look elsewhere. Not sure if this is true, but I'm willing to try anything! So I've just ordered some cheap torx drives and suction cups to remove the screen and have a look into the hard drive. I was going to replace the standard HD with an SSD anyway so I am hoping this is the culprit.
PLEASE, if anybody can help point me in the right direction I would be eternally grateful! Many thanks in advance.
P.S - For your information, I also have a 2008 white MacBook, and a WIndows 8.1 PC I can use for test / diagnostic purposes if anyone knows how, or has any ideas?
    Regards
    Nick

    Hi Selia
The first thing you need to do is backup at least your precious Photo's, Docs and Music in your User Folder to an External HD if your not already backed up using Time Machine, Disk Utility, Super Duper or Carbon Cloner.
Then run the Apple Hardware Test and TechTool if you have Apple Care.
