10.5.7 update with G4 iMac
I just read about the new upgrade. I just bought an old G4 iMac today that has 10.5 installed on it for my 85 year old Mom - who has never used a computer. I thought I had read somewhere that the PowerPC chips can't/shouldn't run 10.5. Is this true? Will I have a problem if I download the new update?

If your computer is running an OS X prior to Snow Leopard 10.6,
the answer (if it is an Intel-based Mac; not old PowerPC model)
would be to buy the retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD from Apple
for about $20, and install it. Then update that to 10.6.8 by using
the installed Snow Leopard online to get Combo Update v1.1 for

that system.
Later systems can then be looked into at Mac App Store, once
the computer is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
And if your computer is a Power PC (G4/G5, etc) and has no
Core2Duo kind of CPU -- See "About this Mac" in apple menu
to disclose the general info about your Mac. Also you can see
even more by clicking on "More Info" when looking in there...
If it isn't an Intel-based Mac, it can't run a system past 10.5.8.

You need to buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD and run the 10.6.8 combo updater.

I connected my external hard drive to my new imac to put all of the information from my macbook onto it. I have been working on the macbook now and want to reconnect the external hard drive so my imac is updated with the work. How is that done? or is it possible?
As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

I recently updated my 2010 iMac 21.5 to MAVERICK. Now I have installed new versions of Pages and Keynote. I have been working on a KEYNOTE presentation that I am modifing for a new presentation at month end, and I can not insert new script. The template is blocked.
Also, when opening an existing PAGES, I get the message that a new version must be installed and it directs me to the app store to buy it for $19.95. Even though these new editions were installed free with MAVERICK, do I now have to purchased these updates?Did you make the Keynotes presentation in the old or the new Keynotes, if you made it with the old version and try to modify it with the new there could be some incomaptibilites. Try opening the presentation with the original version of Keynotes which will probably be located in the Applications folder under iWork.
Does the message state you may or must purchase an upgrade. For most tasks the old Pages will work on many occasions.
I have the latest Pages to allow my devices to share over iCloud but I have not upgraded Numbers or Keynote as I do not require the functions the lastest versions provide. -
I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail. There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software. I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. I don't have the original operating software disk. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Your reply suggests that you have moved Mail to a different location, which (as I said) will prevent it from being properly updated. You cannot use Mail 4.5 with any recent version of Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) included Mail 5 and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) includes Mail 6. I'm assuming that you have either Lion or Mountain Lion, but if that is incorrect, you will need to provide that information.
At this point, you will need to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup and reinstall the system right on top of the old one. This should not disturb any of your documents or applications, though you should have backups beforehand in case something goes wrong. And at this point, with your system in an uncertain state (I don't entirely know what you have done to it), something could go wrong.
You will also want to delete the old copy of Mail 4.5, wherever that is. You can't use it.
In the future, do not move any of the preinstalled applications. Leave them where they are. -
I have just purchased a 5S iphone, when I tried to sync with my Imac it comes up with "...requires iTunes version 11.1 or later.." my iTunes version is 10.6.3, I rechecked software updates but says there is no updates required??? I checked when last auto update was done which was 01/07/12 I also tried downloading from web iTunes version 11.1.5 but it wont load because I don't have min version 10.6.8. What can I do to sort this out? Note: I am a not computer savy so be easy on me.

Bluetooth shuttted down after I updated to Mavericks, please help me !
I am 70 Years old and worked very happy with my iMac (21,5“ mid 2010, 3,2 GHz Intel Core 3)
until I updated him from SnowLeopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.2.
2 Days all was OK. Next Morning-Start he needs (until now) 3 minutes to show me a SCREEN only milky white. After that he starts like ever with all ICONS in about 1 minute. (together 4 min.)
..But I must notice, that I cannot make anything, because the „BLUETOOTH APPLE WIRELESS KEYBOARD and the APPLE MAGIC MOUSE“ doesn't work anything like before.
I could nothing do, I must drop my APPLE only out.
That I maked ever 10x and all was the same... (Maveriks also 4x new updated)
I taked my Logitech-Bluetooth-Mouse from the WIN-Laptop, dropped it in USB from iMAC...and in one second I could work only with this MOUSE...I buyd the Logitech COMBO K520 and all was OK now with my lovely APPLE iMAC to work with him...But without APPLE KEYBOARD and MAGIC MOUSE...and with a 4 min. -START until now.

IMAC mirroring is not working with my IMAC and Apple TV since last update
Hi friends,
since last update I am facing problems with my IMAC and airplay via apple tv to my HD TV screen. It is not working. Only audio but not video. I believe it has something to do with IMAC mirroring, which is not possible to select only expanded desktop. Airply on my TV is working with my IPAD, so it should be a problem with my IMAC only.
Did someone of You make the same experience or know what to do?

Periodic IP Conflict with my iMac since 5.1 update
Hi,
Ever since I updated my Apple TV 3 with iOS 5.1, the ATV regularly ends up sharing an IP address with my iMac (2007) with Snow leopard. This never occured before the update. Both are set up with automatically assigned IPs through DHCP. I can fix the issue by rebooting my 2Wire modem but the issue reoccurs, usually about 2 days later.
I did at one point assign static IP addresses to all devices on the network but this did not stop the problem from reoccuring as it seems the Apple TV did not stick to the assigned IP.
Aside from the iOS update, I did add a second iTunes account to the ATV as well.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Anyone know how I can solve it?
CheersI just noticed the same problem on my Apple TV...never had this problem bf but now I've seen this I realize it started after the update here too....Apple seems to be more of a hassle these days than not....I thought updates were supposed to fix problems not create them but it seems most updates the past year only create issues...sorry I don't have an answer for you and I'm just as annoyed...it's an expensive product to not be able to use for what I use it for mostly...Get off your rear apple and start making our lives easier or I'll go another route when buying products bc I can't deal with these constant issues

Hi mesuno. I can't download the update either. When I click on "Update" I see the download progress bar for only a fraction of a second. Then I get a message in the "updates installed" area saying that the update has been installed. Then the Security Update notice returns and so does the "Update" button. Then I press "Update" again and the same thing happens. I can do this ad infinitum.
The system seems to be confused. I have several entries in the "installed" area saying that it has been installed, but still the "Update" button persists. When I check with "Sytem information" there is no record of the installation.
Is there something wrong with the App Store app, or does anyone else have a better idea? -

The 8gB reference is for Hard Drive space.

I did an auto software update on my iMac, which included a restart. When the machine restarted it's stuck with an Apple logo and spinning wheel. I've tried all of the key strokes that are supposed to work, but nothing has. Any suggestions?
Gray screen could be any number of things, bad third party at boot kext file, a bad Apple one, a bad install/upgrade of OS X, drive corruption etc.

I've been using it on all of my computer without any problems. Remember you won't see any positive comments here. Everyone here is complaining about a problem. If you want a good experience with any upgrade or update first make a backup from which you can boot the computer. If you are installing an update, like 10.10.3 for example, always download and install the Combo Updater - OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update. Before you install any update or upgrade over an existing system you should do this:Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. -
Trouble with Software Update on my iMac

I am trying to run software update on my iMac. Everything seems to be fine, the software update runs, it finds 11 updates. Then, when I hit "install items" a little box pops up asking me to restart the computer. I do so, but when I return to software update, none of the updates have been installed! They are all still listed in the software update box.
I've gone through the motions three or four times, and each time it is the same. It feels a little bit like groundhog day.
Any help would be helpful. I have Mac OS X 10.6.8

Repair permissions and restart your computer. Install 2-3 updates at a time. Repair permissions & restart after each installation.
Never install more than 3 updates at a time. Your system will thank you.
