10.5.8 network throughput and AppleYukon2
I recently detected that my throughput was 25% of what it should be. A speed test confirmed this. I have DSL which is a direct line to the telco office, so it's not cable congestion. I checked the logs and was confronted with a totally saturated log filled with AppleYukon2 kernel extension errors complaining of bad packets received. MII error and CRC.
kernel[0]: AppleYukon2 - bad packet received. length: 1506, packet status bits: CRC error
kernel[0]: AppleYukon2 - bad packet received. length: 36, packet status bits: Broadcasts: MII error
(repeats with different length values and CRC/MII)
These errors saturate the log. They appear more frequently if I try and start a download. The problem was not application specific.
The first thing I checked were my networking cables. Other computers on the same network do not appear to have this same problem.
I installed the recently released security update. This brought my throughput back up to 75% of what it should be. The log is still filling with bad packet errors.
I installed 10.6 on an external drive and updated it to 10.6.1
The throughput is still considerably degraded and the log fills with bad packet errors.
I also tried dumping Extentions.mkext and safe boot with no result
I know that some people that updated to 10.5.8 saw serious problems with the ethernet chip doing a hard reset. A suggested solution was to downgrade the AppleTukon2 kernel extension to the one found in 10.5.6
I would prefer not to do this. Instead I am going to install a fresh install of 10.5.4 on to an external drive and see if the problem still presents. If it's doing it there too, I guess the only thing i have to look at is a hardware failure or the router, but I think this is improbable because other computers on the network are fine and the computer has passed a full HW test.
In the meantime, has anyone else seen this problem on this iMac model or others? Anyone have additional suggestions? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
It may be an external device in your case, but I am experiencing the same symptoms when connecting to devices on my local subnet. I am pretty sure this is related to the iMac itself, as I see link being lost on the interface, both in the /private/var/log/kernel.log, and on the switch it is connected to.

Time Capsule with very slow network throughput
I have a TC that is only supply about 5% of the network throughput it should do.
We ahve a 2MB connection and any computer that is connecting to the TC wirelessly is only getting around 0.1MB. The signal is strong, the noise is low, it's on an isolated channel (no other networks overlapping). It does this regardless of whether I switch to wireless-g or wireless-n (2.4GHz or 5GHz) and regardless of which channel I select.
I plugged in a different TC and I got my 2MB connection no problem.
So I think the first TC is knackered. Luckily it's still under the 90 warrantee. I want to return it to get a replacement, but I can't get through to the apple care telephone service. I've been on hold for 20 mins then got cut off without talking to anyone - this happens every time I call. Why on earth anyone would pay for apple care is beyond me if you can't even get through to Apple!
Can you just take a TC back to an Apple Store and get a straightforward replacement?Sorted it! I hit the factory reset button on the back and started again from scratch.
There must have been some software issue in the TC itself that could not be addressed through the configuration interface.
I hope this helps anyone who has a similar problem. In summary this is what I was experiencing:
1. When connected Mac Mini to TC with ethernet cable I had top speed access - so no drive writing issues.
2. Set up the TC to share our 2Mb internet connection as a wireless-g network. When connected a laptop to TC via the TC's wireless-g network I had excellent signal strength, low noise, and an uncluttered channel (as indicated by iStumbler) - so no interference issues with other netowrks, microwaves, cordless phones etc.
3. The laptop reported an excellent signal strength and potential rate of 54Mb.
4. Used an online broadband speed tester (www.cnet.co.uk/misc/speedtest) on the laptop to determine the actual throughput. The result was around 0.2Mb. Not good.
5. Tried copying a file from the TC over to the laptop and monitored the throughput using the laptop's performance monitor. The result was still around 0.2MB.
6. Tried changing the wireless-g channel. Same result.
7. Repeated the above with a wireless-n network. Same result.
8. Finally, hit the factory reset and repeated points 2 - 4 above. Got almost 2Mb, which is what I was after!
Hope this helps someone. -
Very slow network throughput since 2-3 days ago
I've been having very slow network throughput since 2-3 days ago, with no apparent reason.
I see (from what I can tell) no relevant package updates during that period.
Connections are nfs v3 shares, over UTP cat5e gigabit ethernet.
I've been running this setup for many years now, without such issues.
But now, it's as if throughput is capped around 100Mbps.
Is there a way to see - if for some reason - a network adapter has locked to 100Mbps, instead of 1Gbps?
ifconfig does not say anything.
PS: netstat -i does not report any errors over the connection.
Last edited by wantilles (2011-04-12 15:25:52)experiencing the same issue with my wlan0 since update to kernel2.6.38 yesterday night.
Speed tests grant me a download speed of around 50kbps. Should be around some mbit though! How do I find out, why it's acting so slow?
edit: switched to win7 for the moment. Everything is speedy and normal around here. Something is seriously broken in my arch box!
Can this be related to xorg-server1.10.902 or kernel2.6.38? It would also explain the strange issues with pacman lately (like this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116429 or this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116696).
More people seem to experience the network issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116738
Any insights?
edit#2: Just got back from win7. Upload speed in Arch is quite okay. Download speed is extremely fucked though. I wonder why? At least now I know why pacman has problems getting package upgrades, etc.
How do I fix a problem with the wlan0 connection? Haven't had any of those before with gnome and Networkmanager. I'm using the ath9k module.

Am from India. when i tried to turn on face time the error displayed is" Could not sign in. Check your network connection and try again". how can it be resolved?
If you are using someone else's WiFi they may have restrictions in place.
(cofee shop, etc..)
Have you tried connecting using at least more than one particular WiFi network ?
You might want to try googling for a bandwidth test site
verify you have reasonable throughput..
1 megabit up and 1 megabit down..
(bandwidthplace.com is what I typically use..) -
Ethernet/networking link down // AppleYukon2 - en0 link down
*Massive writing into a Volume located on a NAS // Ethernet/networking link down // AppleYukon2 - en0 link down*
Scenario
Writing a massive data into a volume (sparsebundle) on a NAS (network attached store).
*Problem / Error*
Always during this process the Ethernet link down.
Then the MAC OS X (10.5.6) freeze – no reset, no shutdown and no volume eject – after trying some clicks the spinning wheel comes and only soft reset or hard reset shutdown.
*Technical Info*
Wireless Device: Linksys - WRT54G firmware updated
NAS/External Hard Drive: Iomega - Home Network HD firmware updated
MacBook Pro // Mac OS X (10.5.6) // 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo // 2 GB

You should have taken it back to apple immediately.
You need to try a clean install of the OS.. yosemite has known bugs especially with the wireless and if you upgrade installed the OS it can just get worse.
You should do a clone of the hard disk and a Time Machine backup etc.. to make sure you don't lose files.. but a clean install will at least show if it is driver issue or actual faulty hardware. Is the laptop still in warranty / Applecare.. if so return it to apple for checking. -
Network based and a-gps, data use tests
i was trying to find this kind of info, but only found others asking.
i hope this is useful info for others, especially while roaming.
skip to the bottom for conclusion,
this is the process i took:
i called nokia tech support,
their phone support his horrible,
the people on the phone don't actually know anything, and have to look up everything you ask them.
they were the worst.
i emailed nokia tech support.
my message was:
"i would like to know the difference between assisted gps positioning, and network based positioning. these are 2 of the 4 options on my nokia e66 for positioning methods. i would like to know if network based positioning uses internet data from my service provider to obtain my gps position. i am especially concerned with this function while i'm roaming internationally, as i do not want to be charged for roaming data use."
in about half hour they responded w/ an answer, and then 45 min after that someone else responded w/ an answer.
the first response, minus the hello's etc. was:
"In response to your email, Assisted GPS and Network Based positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic so you will be charged for data use. Only "normal" GPS and Bluetooth GPS do not generate additional costs related to data traffic.
Normal GPS is quite slow and does not work indoors. Therefore, it is recommended to enable at least A-GPS to get a faster position outdoors.
Network based and Wi-Fi positioning also allow you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation."
the 2nd response was:
"In response to your inquiry, the difference between Assisted GPS positioning (A-GPS) and Network based positioning is that, A-GPS uses satellites while Network based positioning is based on information of your cellular network environment. It allows you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation. Both positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic (unless you have configured the device to use Wi-Fi connection to make the internet connection). The cost may vary while you are on roaming. Kindly contact the service provider for information about data transmission costs."
i can also respond w/ more questions, but instead did some tests, starting with sitting home, indoors, and eventualy moving to a window w/ lots of sky.
test 1:
i enabled:
integrated gps
network based
assisted gps
opened maps,
set maps to be offline,
set default internet access point to my home wlan network,
closed maps,
cleared all counters and the log on the phone's communication log.
opened maps
there is a pink circle around the area i may be in,
the icon that would show gps satellite strength, changes to show the cell phone antenna icon.
but the packet data counter is sending/receiving a total of around 3-8kb immediately, and over the course of time, it keeps adding up, every 1-2 minutes, and it is shown as packet data to/from the access point "at&t internet"
over the course of ten minutes, it's been about 43kb.
and i can tell on the phone's home screen that the packet data connection becomes active when it does.
the maps kb indicator still says 0.0kb, with a line through the double arrow packet data symbol.
test 2:
now i exited maps,
cleared the counters and logs
i turned off a-gps.
enabled only integrated gps and network based.
i open maps,
the same thing is happening as with the assisted gps on, except i connected to my home wlan once, in the middle of connecting to at&t internet 10 or so times.
everything else is happening the same.
test 3:
i exited maps,
cleared the counters and logs.
enabled only integrated gps.
i open maps, and there is no evidence of packet data connection, or wlan connection.
nothing is showing up in the logs or packet counters, and there is no pink circle around where i may be.
if i set maps to go online, w/ my wlan as the access point, or at&t internet, their respective icons show up on maps, as well as the phone's home screen.
the phone's log show respective connections are made but w/ 0.0kb, and the phone's packet counter, as well as the maps kb usage, say 0.0kb.
test 4:
set maps to offline, w/ my wlan as access point.
exited maps,
turned phone off for a bit to test gps from cold start.
turned on phone,
cleared counters/logs,
enabled only assisted gps and integrated gps.
open maps, there's no pink circle around where i may be, just the red dot of where it thought i last was.
there's about 4-5kb of data transfer,
then i bring the phone to the window where there's a lot of clear sky, and my location is found pretty fast.
i know that w/o assisted gps, w/ only integrated gps, it takes a while to get the gps signals.
i went back and forth to/from the window, and there was packet data use again only once more, not continuously like w/ network based positioning.
so to conclude my tests,
setting the maps to be offline, still uses a-gps and network based positioning.
network based uses a more data, continuously,
which is the opposite of what i thought, i thought a-gps would use more, so i was using network based on and a-gps off while in canada. whoops.
using assisted gps uses about 5-10kb, which, when roaming, according to at&t, they charge 1.95cents/kb.
might be worthwhile for getting a quick gps signal, nothing worse than waiting forever for it to connect.
the only way to be completely clear of data use is disable network based and assisted gps, or set the phone to offline mode.A-GPS: This uses information from cell network to get a rough idea of where you are. It then uses this information to figure out which satellites to look for. Result is a faster satellite lock. So A-GPS uses a few kB of data to get an initial position, but navigation is done using GPS satellites, which does not require ANY data connection.
Network based: This uses information from the cell network to plot the current position when GPS satellite signal is not available, ie indoors, in a tunnel, etc. Position info derived from the cell network is not as accurate as that from GPS satellites, but serves as a stopgap until GPS signal can be re-acquired. Network based positioning used your data connection EACH TIME the satellite lock is lost. So the amount of data used is dependent on the quality of access you have to the GPS satellites. If you don't lose the connection to the GPS satellites, then you won't use any data.
The ‘offline’ option within the Nokia Maps app only refers to street, POI, etc searches, NOT to A-GPS, Network based positioning or to connecting with the GPS satellites.
If you want to navigate without using ANY data connection, set A-GPS off AND set Network based positioning off AND set the Internet option in Nokia Maps to Offline. Do this and you will not use any of your data connection allowance when navigating. There is no need to put the phone into flight mode.
If I've helped you, you can thank me by clicking the green 'kudos' star on my post. Cheers. -

I receive sales orders by email. I want to filter some to print on my default network printer and others to print on another network printer. The email body must print as well as txt, .pdf, .xls, .doc attachments.
You can filter messages to file them to a certain folder, but I don't think you can have Thunderbird to automatically print them.

So our school lets us use Macbook Airs for the school year, and it has facetime on it. I know facetime isn't blocked because like everyone else is using it. So I decide to give it a try. I click the icon, it says enter your apple ID. I dont have one, so I click to make one, and do so. I then enter my apple ID and click next. The screen reads "People will call you using your email address. What email address would you like to use?" I enter my email address in the box below the message, and then go to my email and click the link, and sign in, thus verifying the email. I go back to the facetime window, and click next. At the top it says Verified, but when I click next it doesn't go on to the next step, it simply blacks out the next button so that I can not click it, and after a few minutes a message comes up that says "Could not verify the email address. Please check your network connection and try again."
So that is the issue, please help!!!!!
*Note-I repeat that I know it is not blocked by the school because everyone else uses it just fine.*Hello BassoonPlayer,
Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using. FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in. This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly. By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you. Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

Cannot install Firefox. When I click on the link on the Mozilla website, it goes to an "error loading page". My network connection and Internet Explorer are fuctioning normally.
== computer was recently wiped clean and am now reinstalling all previous software and applications ==
== User Agent ==
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)None of the stuff in " http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite " helps. I have tried and tried and I have even wipe the computer clean still didn't help. I got the same problem as he/she has got in the first posted. Can add some web pages but not all the web pages I want.. I should have never updated to 3.6.13... That's when it all started for me, from that version..... Now Version 3.6.14 is out, I was hoping the version 3.6.14 might would fix the problem wrong again....
Funny thing is i can not even Bookmark Firefox.com!!!!!...lol
So any ideas on how to fix it other than the link giving would help.
Thanks. -
When I try to sign in with my Apple ID and password, it says I can not sign in. To check my network connection and try again.
I am connected to my home wifi network. Why can't I sign in??Not sure, but iAd Producer probably has nothing to do with this.
Did you try posting in a forum that discusses iPhone, or FaceTime, or networking?

I am trying to delete an XLS file from a network drive and am getting a message that says the file cannot be deleted because it is in use. I can't see where it is in use and have tried to reboot the computer to no avail. I can delete other files but several XLS files are giving me this message.
You said it was a network drive. So is someone else on the network using that same file or may have have left with excel still accessing it on their system?

i have problem with my wifi in 4 S, i cant connect to any wifi itried resetting network setting and reset all setting but the result was the same, its only keeps searching for wifi and cant find any, itried to use OTHER but also didnt work.please help me???
If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast. If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used. The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID . Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network. A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default. Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in. HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you. You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files. Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.
