With any update or upgrade release of any operating system, it is important remember the following cardinal rules:
1. Backup your data. Backup your data. Backup your data. Get the gist? If you don't backup your data at least twice, you may find yourself without recourse if something wasn't tested with the operating system. There is always a chance something may not work.
2. Dismount and disconnect the hardware that is not made by Apple. Some third party hardware may not be up to date with its firmware to be able to handle the update.
3. Quit all open applications. Some applications may get surprised if the operating system is running changes under the hood, and not know how to react.
4. Not always necessary, but repair permissions as preventive repair. Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
5. Make sure your hard disk is less than 85% full. This arbitrary amount has been found to avoid most system slowdowns.
6. Check the system requirements of the update.
7. Check all your software installed, including drivers have been tested with the update. If it hasn't, don't upgrade your machine.
8. Make sure third party system modification software is up to date before installing the update, or remove it until you can update the system first, and then install their update.
9. Read the entire readme that came with the update. It should emphasize most of the points I've made.
And above all, don't panic, if you hear others here have had trouble with the update, this is a help ward, and most people come here either to help, or to find help. People who have no problems rarely have reason to come in, except to help.

No no, if you read what I said, it would be that each individual display would be customizable to the user. The way you have it, it sounds like your second display will be dedicated to scrolling through fullscreen apps not allowing you to do it on the home screen. This is silly because with my concept, you could do that, by dragging apps to fullscreen in your second display, but if you want you could tell another display to scroll through fullscreen apps (independently) if you wanted. Each display will have it's own mission control with it's own set of desktops. I also can see how some people would still want them linked together, so this could just be a little check box made in mission control prefs to "link" or "unlink" desktops with link checked by default.
With your solution you're limited to your setup. but what if the person has three or four displays? Well then your solution would limit them to one dedicated display that scrolls through fullscreen apps where mine lets a person customize their desktops depending on their preference and setup.
further example: if you have safari, address book and mail in one display, you could still have ichat, PS and Illustrator in your second, and a text editor, FTP Client and iTunes in your third. Then you would mix and match these apps but it would promote the use of mulitple displays as well as benefit people with three or more, which thunderbolt, Cinema Display and Pro computers support. -

Sorry for the long headline - I'm new to the support community and thought that was the post! I've been happily using my old version of iMovie - I don't even know the number - I guess it was 11? I just installed the most recent 10.0.2 and it is radically different from what I've been using. For starters, whereas my uploaded video used to be in the lower section, and I would edit up above, now it's reversed. Whereas I used to click on the transitions and drag a blur or whatever to my movie right while I was editing, now it's on a different screen. And the easy old Export file button is gone, where you could choose setting, file size, export as Quicktime movie - all gone - now it converts to mp4 and I STILL can't figure out how to get it back to .mov
Please don't say "read the Help manual" - I tried - there's nothing there about any of this. And by the way, I'm not a techie - I taught myself what I needed to know about the old iMovie and am now lost so please no snarks. I would appreciate any help.Select in browser your movie, click Export on toolbar, choose iTunes, QT etc. then choose size of your file in opening window. And then click Export in this window.

My 30 day Photoshop trial finished yesterday. I purchased the $9.99 per month Photoshop package and received an email saying "Thank you for your payment etc" But when I go to open PS it still says "the trial has expired.." Is it supposed to work automatically or is there a step I'm missing?
1. Close all the Adobe Applications. Log-out from creative.adobe.com and re-login.
2. Once you launch the software and when you get the error saying the the trial version has expired, you will have an option saying "License this software".
3. Select this option and enter your credentials and click next.

How do you suggest this hardware check should be done? "OS" stands for "operating system," the software that runs the computer. The computer of necessity relies on the OS to do its checks. If the OS on the Mac is damaged or the drive needs to be reformatted to correct errors on it, how do you expect it to be able to use its damaged software to check for any damage to its own hardware?
Macs have a very limited hardware test built into their firmware called POST, for Power On Self Test. As the name suggests, this runs every time you power them up. But it can only check for gross errors, & can't check the OS software at all (because that software has to load & run the tests).
Apple provides a more extensive way to check for hardware problems known as the Apple Hardware Test, but for reasons that should be obvious from the above, it has to be initiated by the user. Likewise, Apple provides a way to test the hard drive for errors (Disk Utility), & for the same reasons it must be run from another start up volume (like the system DVD) to repair the drive normally supplying the OS.
Apple also provides Safe Mode, which loads only the essential parts of the OS from the start up drive. But it isn't magic -- if any of the essential parts of the OS have been damaged by file system corruption, it too will fail to start up the Mac.
The bottom line is Apple can't possibly provide any comprehensive way for your Mac to predict how a perfectly good update would react to existing hardware or software damage on it. That is something you must learn to do, especially if you rely on it for any professional purpose. -
i need help downloading firefox. after clicking download and run from the box that appears the box just dissapears and nothing else comes up
SAVE the installer to your hard drive (do not use the "Run" option); save it to your Desktop so that you can find it. When the download is complete, close whatever browser you have open, click or double-click the file you downloaded and see if it installs without a problem.
The downloader is a self-extracting archive and should not need or use 7-zip. I have 7-zip installed on my system and it does not interfere with nor is it used in the Firefox install process. Hopefully, you have not set the downloading of .exe files to be associated with 7-zip.

I just started started seeing this after the latest firefox release. I see it on M$Winblows at work, Linux and Mac at home, so it isn't activex related for me. I can't upgrade Flash for Linux since Adobe stopped supporting it, but I haven't had any issues up until the last week. And as far as Mac and Windows, they are up to date in patches. Once again engineers just love to make things better. If there was a better alternitive to Firefox I'd use it.
The outdated Flash plugins is not due to any Firefox version or updates but due to a blocklist of vulnerable Flash plugins made on Dec 11/12. The Firefox 31.3.0esr and 34 were released on December 1st and the updated Flash came out on Dec 9.

This is the first time I tried to use tabgroups. I clicked on the bricks-style icon and then couldn't see any way to get back to my current firefox session and open tabs. It doesn't seem to be a toggle, no "go back" or anything else I can see. Help!
In the Tab Groups window, I have a Close (X) button in the right upper corner (along with the Minimize and Maximize buttons). Clicking the Close (X) button will return you to your normal browsing session. In addition, SHIFT+CTRL+E will return you to to your normal browsing (SHIFT+CTRL+E also will open the Tab Groups window).

I have a late 2010 Macbook Air with Mountain Lion OS, and after buying a Thuderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter I realize that my Macbook doesn't have a Thunderbolt port!!!! (lame, isn't it??).

In a dark environment, you don't need the lighting to be as bright, because youre eyes are adjusted to the darkness, and there's less ambient light. In a lighter environment, you need more light from the keys and the screen to get the same effect.
The important thing isn't "how many bars of brightness is it set to" but "can I read the key caps and see the screen". If the answer to that question is "yes" than the automatic light adjustment is doing it's job - if it's too bright or too dim them just adjust it accordingly and then leave it on automatic. -
