10.5 Client refuses to authenticate Kerberos or obey managed preferences

I am sure this has come up time and again, but a search in the forums has not come back with a work around.
I am running Tiger Server 10.4.11 as an OD master serving up portable accounts in a mixed Tiger and Leopard Client Environment. I just did a Leopard upgrades on two MacBooks that were previously bound to the OD server when running Tiger.
Upon completing the upgrades I have found two things:
1) Local and network users working on the laptops are no longer being challenged for a kerberos ticket to authenticate to network shares served up by the 10.4 server
2) Managed preferences for users as well as the clients are no longer being obeyed by the Leopard upgraded clients.
Everything works as it should on my Tiger Clients connecting to the server.
I have flushed the kerberos plists and rebound the Leopard clients to no effect, except to see some managed preferences on the login screen that somehow were honored in the upgrade be rolled back to factory defaults.
I know that Apple has made a lot of changes in Leopard, but is there any known work around to get Leopard to pull kerberos tickets from the server and obey managed preferences? I am not yet ready to make the upgrade to Leopard server with a stable server environment already in place.
Seems to me there should be some sort of workaround.
Help!
TIA,
Art

Turns out it was a time synch issue. I discovered this without any help from the forums.

  • L2TP / PPP & peer refused to authenticate

    Hi
    Having some trouble with a basic L2TP VPN setup in Xserve 10.6.1 (kerberos auth). From what I've read in the meantime, it seems to indicate that OSX Server is asking for client authentication, that isn't given by the device? (using iPhone 3.0.1 and OSX 10.6.1 client to test). Do I have to turn off client auth somehow? Any suggestions appreciated!

    My first suggestion is to switch from Kerberos to MS-CHAPv2 and try again.
    Personally, I have not been able to get Kerberos authentication to work reliably, and in fact, right now I seem to not be able to set it any longer (thanks, now I have something to fix )
    Let us know if that 'fixed' it or post the log once that is done and we will continue along.

  • Kinit: Client not found in Kerberos database while getting initial credentials

    Hi all,
    I am trying to configure application which uses Kerberos authentication.
    Error message:
    kinit: Client not found in Kerberos database while getting initial credentials
    I use Windows Server 2003 domain controller as LDAP server, Tomcat application (on Linux) and IIS application as client, and apache load balancer.
    There is multidomain environment:  russia.domain.net, europa.domain.net, asia.domain.net;
    Tomcat and IIS servers works behind a proxy server (Apache on Linux).
    For applications created two DNS  records type A. all DNS use IP address of Apache proxy server:
    application-sandbox.russia.domain.net
    applicationweb-sandbox.russia.domain.net
    To confiure kerberos authentication i have performed the following steps:
    1. Create user account in EUROPA domain and configure delegation for this:
    EUROPE\application_sandbox
    2. Register SPN for this account:
    setspn -A HTTP/application-sandbox.russia.domain.net EUROPE\application_sandbox
    setspn -A HTTP/application-sandbox EUROPE\application_sandbox
    3. After i verified registered SPN for this account:
    setspn.exe -L EUROPE\application_sandbox
    Registered ServicePrincipalNames for CN=kxxb999,OU=Users,DC=europe,DC=domain,DC=net:
            HTTP/application-sandbox
            HTTP/application-sandbox.russia.domain.net
    3. After i generate a keytab file:
    ktpass /princ HTTP/application-sandbox.russia.domain.net:@RUSSIA.DOMAIN.NET /ptype krb5_nt_principal /crypto rc4-hmac-nt /mapuser EUROPE\application_sandbox /out application_sandbox.keytab -kvno 0 /pass Pa$$w0rd
    4. Properties of account looks like the following:
    Get-ADUser -Identity appication_sandbox -Properties CN, ServicePrincipalNames, UserPrincipalName
    CN : kxxb999
    DistinguishedName : CN=kxxb999,OU=Users,DC=europe,DC=domain,DC=net
    Enabled : True
    GivenName :
    Name : kxxb999
    ObjectClass : user
    SamAccountName : application_sandbox
    ServicePrincipalNames : {HTTP/application-sandbox, HTTP/application-sandbox.russia.domain.net}
    Surname : application_sandbox
    UserPrincipalName : HTTP/[email protected]
    4.Note that CN and User logon name are different. SPN registered for DNS record.
    There are no computer in domain with name application-sandbox.russia.domain.net. this is a DNS record for application.
    5. Then i copy keytab file to Linux machine, configure krb5.conf file and trying to get TGT for registered principal name.
    krb5.conf file:
    [libdefaults]
    default_realm = EUROPE.DOMAIN.NET
    dns_lookup_realm = false
    dns_lookup_kdc = false
    default_tkt_enctypes = rc4-hmac
    default_tgs_enctypes = rc4-hmac
    [realms]
    RUSSIA.DOMAIN.NET = {
    kdc = dc01.russia.domain.net
    admin_server = dc01.russia.domain.net
    default_domain = russia.domain.net
    EUROPE.DOMAIN.NET = {
    kdc = dc01.europe.domain.net
    admin_server = dc01.europe.domain.net
    default_domain = europe.domain.net
    [domain_realm]
    europe.domain.net = EUROPE.DOMAIN.NET
    .europe.domain.net = EUROPE.DOMAIN.NET
    russia.domain.net = RUSSIA.DOMAIN.NET
    .russia.domain.net = RUSSIA.DOMAIN.NET
    [appdefaults]
    autologin = true
    forward = true
    forwardable = true
    encrypt = true
    Then i verified created keytab file:
    klist -e -k -t application_sandbox.keytab
    Keytab name: FILE:application_sandbox.keytab
    KVNO Timestamp Principal
    0 01/01/70 01:00:00 HTTP/[email protected] (arcfour-hmac)
    And trying to get TGT ticket:
    kinit -V -k -t application_sandbox.keytab HTTP/[email protected]
    Using default cache: /tmp/krb5cc_0
    Using principal: HTTP/[email protected]
    Using keytab: application_sandbox.keytab
    kinit: Client not found in Kerberos database while getting initial credentials
    But if i use SamAccountName name with kinit commant then i can aquire TGT ticket:
    [root@localhost security]# kinit application_sandbox
    Password for [email protected]:
    [root@localhost security]# klist
    Ticket cache: FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_0
    Default principal: [email protected]
    Valid starting Expires Service principal
    06/30/14 16:37:41 07/01/14 02:37:38 krbtgt/[email protected]
    renew until 07/01/14 16:37:41
    I'm in trouble. can anyone faced this problem?
    Thank you

    Hi all,
    according to Amy answer I thought, how user principal could  not be found in Kerberos database, e.g AD domain.
    My HTTP service works in RUSSIA domain, but user principal created in EUROPE domain.
    Next, i have checked my ktpass command:
    ktpass /princ HTTP/[email protected] /ptype krb5_nt_principal /crypto rc4-hmac-nt /mapuser EUROPE\application_sandbox /out application_sandbox.keytab -kvno 0 /pass
    Pa$$w0rd
    especially  the following parameters:
    /princ HTTP/[email protected]
    /mapuser EUROPE\application_sandbox
    When generating keytab it changes userlogon name to HTTP/application-sandbox.russia.domain.net and set domain domain to RUSSIA.DOMAIN.NET
    But no user principal with name application_sandbox in RUSSIA.DOMAIN.NET domain (e.g. Kerberos realm)
    So solution is change RUSSIA.DOMAIN.NET to EUROPE.DOMAIN.NAME in ktpass command.
    After that i am able to get TGT and authenticate in domain.

  • SSO : krb_error 6 Client not found in Kerberos Database

    Hi All,
    We are trying to configure SSO for Win AD user to login to infoView
    OS - Windows 2003 SP2
    Machine - 64 Bit
    BOE - XI 3.1 + SP2 + FP2.4 (32 Bit)
    CMS Database - SQL 2005 Server
    Domain Controller - Not sure if is 2003 or 2008 (awaiting information from client)
    While executing the kinit
    kinit BOSSO/<service accont name with FQDN> <password>
    its throwing a "krb_error 6 Client not found in kerberos Database."
    However Manual AD is working fine.
    What could be the issue here.
    Thanks and Regards

    client not found in kerberos DB means the KDC was located but the username was not found. There are many reasons for this
    1) typo in the username or when ktpass was run
    2) duplicate UPN (caused by running ktpass on 2 or more accounts)
    3) ktpass was not run on the account or not successfully so the username was never changed
    4) there is a bug in AD with 2008 DC's when the UPN does not = the samaccountname which will throw this message (search SAP KB's for 2008 client not found in kerberos database and you'll find the link to the Microsoft article to patch it)

  • Client not found in Kerberos database

    Hi All,
    I am getting Client not found in Kerberos database* when i try to a create new connection from SQL Developer 2.1.1.64 to Oracle 10G database.
    I am sure that login credentials provided in connection properties are correct. pls respond, if you know the solution.
    Regards,
    Manoj N.

    Your "being sure" is overwhelmed by the evidence. The chance that you are correct and database/Kerberos is incorrect is a very small number approaching zero.
    So back to basics ...
    1. What is your actual database version (it is not 10g)?
    2. What version of Kerberos?
    3. What platform and operating system?
    4. Does it work for anyone else?
    5. Did it ever work before and stopped working or is this a first attempt by anyone to log on?
    6. Have you turned on connection logging? If not do so. If you have post the relevant section of the log file.
    7. Do you have a DBA or system or network administrator on-site?
    8. Please also post the full and complete error message not your interpretation of it.
    We can not help you without a thorough understanding of what is actually happening which you have not provided.

  • Android Beta client refuses to launch RemoteApp via URI scheme

    Android Beta (8.1.7) client refuses to accept following URI: "rdp://full%20address=s:fqdn&remoteapplicationmode=i:1&remoteapplicationprogram=s:%7C%7Ccalc" with the error message "The RDP file is not valid. Notify your network administrator."
    But it can launch RemoteApp via equivalent RDP file:
    full address:s:fqdn
    remoteapplicationmode:i:1
    remoteapplicationprogram:s:||calc

    Hi,
    For URI scheme, please try to use “:” instead of “=” (equal sign) and recheck result.
    Thanks.

  • Publish client print queues as managed preferences?

    Hello,
    I followed the documentation from Papercut NG on Mac printing, section Publishing the printer via Workgroup Manager to get the defined print queues for my client machines published as managed preferences.
    I set up the print queues on the server. On the client, I configured the server print queues using the local Administrator account and printed successfully a few test pages. I then logged in with an Open Directory account with admin privileges. I then open Workgroup Manager, select a Computer Group, click Preferences, select Printing. I enable Manage Always, but the list of Available Printers remains empty, contrary to what the screenshot tells me from the referred article.
    Environment:
    + Snow Leopard Server 10.6.1 on a MacMini.
    + Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on a MacPro.
    Am I missing something?

    Hi,
    I would suggest you to check the time recording functionality, see
    details in:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_sm70ehp1_sp26/helpdata/en/d5/299631364d4e959

    Another possibility is configuring the Service Level Agreement, see
    details in SDN blog:

  • Client Replaced - Managed Preferences no longer working

    An iMac on my network came down with a hardware problem, so I replaced it with a different unit. I removed the computer from Workgroup Manager, gave the second one the same name and re-bound it to OD. Workgroup Manager can see the system in the Computer List, and I can add it to the Computer Groups I need, but the managed preferences of the group don't push out to the new system. I've since tried renaming it, but the problem remains.
    The groups are working with all the other Macs that belong to them and the new unit is bound in the exact same way - is there some residual of the old machine that OSX server isn't liking? I've been pulling my hair out over this one.

    Hi
    If you've had the logic board replaced the new board will have a different MAC address - obviously. Managing hardware using Computer Lists is actually done using the MAC addressess (ethernet hardware address). Its not enough to name it the same. You have to remove it completely from the Computer List and browse for it again. Better still make a note of the new MAC address and manually add it.
    You can find the MAC addresses (as well as the IP addresses) of any networked mac/pc/printer etc by issuing:
    ping 192.168.x.255
    Or whatever IP address range you are using. Let it run for a few seconds. Use Control C to stop the ping and issue:
    arp -a
    This should list all IP addresses and associated MAC addresses. If you keep a list of which client computer name is associated with which IP address and MAC address then you should have a clearer picture of your network topology. This is better achieved if the Server is also the DHCP Server.

  • Some Wireless clients won't authenticate to 887VA-W

    Hi folks
    I've swapped over a few months ago from an 877w router to an 887VAw which has a separate AP in-built, and there are a few wireless clients that had no problem authenticating to the 877w but just refuse to communicate to the 887VA-W.
    The clients in question are set top box type devices : (1)Now TV and (2) Sky Wireless Adapter.
    They have no problem seeing the SSID's being broadcast, and for troubleshooting I've setup an open test SSID without any encryption, but the clients still won't authenticate and grab an ip address, or more accurately they just don't get a dhcp ip address so I don't think authentication is really the issue. I don't know why these clients aren't happy with dhcp on the guest vlan (vlan2) where other clients get an ip address and work fine. Perhaps the fact I'm using vlan1 (being used for the Eap-Fast home wlan) as the native untagged vlan might have something to do with it? If I use a static ip address on the guest vlan (vlan 2 / ip 10.1.1.n ) then the Sky Wireless Adapter can send and receive packets across the wlan.
    Can anybody please suggest some debugs or config changes to try and nail the problem? The relevant configs from the AP is pasted below, and the router below that.

    Hi Sebastian
    Please see ip dhcp debug from 887VA-W showing the Sky client requesting an ip address but failing to get one. Also a debug from an 877-W showing successful dhcp assignment. Also the dhcp config as requested.The successful trace shows 2 mac addresses from the Sky wireless adapter/ Sky box each getting a dhcp address. I don't know whether the failure is a bug in the 887 dhcp code or some config in the embedded AP that needs tweaking.
    Bregs, Tim
    The Sky wired adapter (I think it's the mac of the sky box lan port) mac is 00:19:FB:A4:B2:1A
    The Sky wireless mac is 18:28:61:99:7B:A8

    Once again, an update appears to have broken Messages/Jabber's ability to authenticate AD users after the 10.9.2/Server 3.0.3 update even though it was working well before. Hoping someone here has some ideas for how to help!
    I can log in just fine as a local user (e.g. [email protected]), but no luck with AD users (e.g. [email protected]). As always, it fails with no intelligible error message whatsoever:

    I reset the jabber server configuration as described here to no avail: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5354428
    The DNS configuration looks good:
    changeip -checkhostname

    Current HostName    = comet.ADdomain.private
    DNS HostName        = comet.ADdomain.private
    The names match. There is nothing to change.

    I am not sure if it's attempting to authenticate to AD or not, and if so, why it might be failing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Also, while you're troubleshooting, I found Adium's debug window to be invaluble for showing errors during logon (even if you plan to use Messages).
    You can open it in debug mode by holding option + click Adium.app, select "start in debug mode". Then in Adium menu > Debug window.

    Have a total of 5 APs and every 2-3 days these devices seem to not allow clients to connect. Clients appear to associate but never authenticate. I have opened a case with Cisco (Case number in title) but want to see if anyone else is having this issue and how you may have resolved this.
    I received an email from an engineer and one of the options he asked me to change was not even an option on the screen. I have UNTAGGED VLAN selected however MANAGEMENT VLAN is not an option. Below is his email.
    Making a bit of reasearch i discovered that maybe you have fallen into a firmware bug.
    It should be related to VLAN.
    If you go on VLAn and IPv4 setting you should see somewhere the MANAGEMENT VLAN and UNTAGGED VLAN settings.
    Both of them should be ENABLED.
    On the next fw release this should be fixed because it’s normal to have both disabled, but just to workaround the problem you could try with this settings enabled and see if the “freeze” is not happening again.
    Please update me so i can close this case or go on with the process.

    The Fix Multicast rate setting can be found on the Wireless - Radio Page. In the advanced settings section. Below the
    Transmit Power settings.

  • Web test result for a URL which needs a client certificate to authenticate

    Hi,
    we want to check URL response of a .asmx URL which needs a client certificate for authenticating.
    I got the cert object and then passed it to invoke-webrequest cmdlet, but no matter what i try I always get this error
    “The underlying connection was closed”.
    code1
    $WebClient = New-Object System.Net.WebClient
    [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::ServerCertificateValidationCallback = {$true}
    $WebClient.DownloadString(“https://server1/mywebservices/myser.asmx”)
    code2
    $url=”https://server1/mywebservices/myser.asmx”
    $cert=(Get-ChildItem cert: -Recurse | where {$_.Thumbprint -eq “abcdefgh3333…..something”}| Select -First 1)
    [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::ServerCertificateValidationCallback = {$true}
    #load my client certificate defined by thumbprint
    $HTTP_Request = [System.Net.WebRequest]::Create($url)
    $HTTP_Request.ClientCertificates.Add($cert )
    # We then get a response from the site.
    $HTTP_Response = $HTTP_Request.GetResponse()
    Can someone please help me.
    Thanks
    Manish

    Hi Anna
    Thanks for the reply.
    I used the function referred earlier in my script, as below.
    It is still throwing error. However it does work in powershell v2.
    Is there any specific change required in the script to make it work with V3. I tried invoke-webrequest and it failed too.
    function Ignore-SSLCertificates

  • 10.4.11 client don't authenticate on replica server 10.5

    We' ve got a 10.5 OD Master and a 10.5 OD Replica.
    10.5 Clients (mobile) can log on on master, on the replica (if the master is down) and also locally (if all servers are down)
    10.4 Clients (mobile) can log on on master and locally (if all servers are down).
    If the OD Master is down and OD Replica is up our 10.4 Clients can't log on.
    Any Ideas ?
    I think Replica Server is OK, Leopard Clients use it with any problems.
    This is the Debug log with the command sudo killall -USR1 DirectoryService
