10.5 is not that smooth on my G5 powermac - suggestions why?

Hello everyone;
Just a quick question on OS 10.5.
I just upgraded from 10.4 and I have to say that 10.5 is not as smooth as I thought it would be on my machine.
I have a Dual 1.8 Gh/z G5 Powermac with 1.5gig of RAM and a 128mb ATI graphics card and a 250gb HD.
In things like spaces, running multiple tabs & windows (in safari) or having magnification on the dock - it runs a rough. Whereas Safari and the dock ran fine in 10.4.
When magnification is on for the dock, I get tearing and a slow frame rate as the zooming effect appears rough and jolty.
In Spaces, the frame rate is low as well; making the zoom out into spaces mode appear jolty again.
Also, mostly in Safari; when I change to it; it takes considerable time to make it that dark grey colour to indicate it is an active window.
What I would like to know is OS 10.5 coded relatively poorly for PowerPC than Intel? Is my RAM not enough? Do I need a better Graphics card? or a combination of all the above?
How should I, or should I, upgrade my hardware?
Thankyou,
Nate.

In general that's true, and it's also true that throwing hardware at the problem might make it go away. For example, with the problem I had, I could have bought a whole new computer, and with the increase in processing power the amount of system resources that were being taken up by Apple's faulty usb drivers might have remained the same proportionately, but I would have noticed less because overall processing power would have increased so significantly.
My suggestion is to do some analysis and address the root cause of the issue rather than the symptoms first, rather than spending money on band-aids. Also, Leopard, at least with the 9800 graphics cards is definitely flawed. Some of the screen tearing he mentioned could be a symptom of the graphics card overheating due to the OS not controlling fan speed properly.

  • ITunes video playback quality is not that smooth

    Hello:
    Two questions--
    1. Why do the music videos I purchase on iTunes (and then play on iTunes) freeze up for a few seconds after I push play, but then otherwise playback is OK?
    2. Why does the "spinning beachball" appear almost everytime I press play for a video?
    Comment--
Given that my Mac more than meets the minimum system requirements for video playback, I think the videos should play smoothly from start to finish, especially at $1.99 a piece. I suspect that the playback bugs listed above are the result of iTunes not being that good/powerful of a video player. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved upon future iTunes software updates. In the meantime, I will not purchase anymore videos.
    Thanks.

Just updated iTunes to most recent version. Now I'm getting jerky video playback in BOTH iTunes and QT Pro (latest version). CPU use is very high but random; ditto with video playback (i.e., doesn't hang up on the same scene/time).
I had this issue a little over a year ago after updating iTunes to the then latest version. Got nowhere with Apple's "Service" texts. I played around with configs for a while and also re-installed iTunes. It has worked fine until yesterday (same symptoms as last time). As for the past "fix": nothing I can hang a hat on. Methinks Apple updated the version I re-installed with (tho' the version # was unchanged).

  • Key frame move not that smooth

Trying to do a simple move on a still image.  Start wide, zoom in while tracking over slightly.  I key frame the first position then key frame the second position.  The second position is, as I say, zoomed in and moved to the right a bit.  So when I watch the move, yes it does go from A to B, but not in one smooth trajectory.  Instead, it moves in a kind of snakey way, moving in then slightly to the right, then in again.  It gets from A to B, but not the way one would expect.  It certainly looks off.   Is there a way to fix this?

There are several posts about this. Try searching under "straight moves with key frames."
    SOLUTIONS / WORK-AROUNDS:
1.) Locate your key frames in the canvas viewer (you may have to shrink the canvas down as small as 25%) then right-click on each key frame to change each path to "linear." (It defaults to "S-curve." This is what is causing the "snakes.") If you cannot locate all the key frames (one or more may be  "outside" your viewer) then you will have to manually write down all your parameters in the inspector (admittedly, a pain) and then manipulate your image in the viewer so you CAN find the key frames. Right-click / toggle each key frame to "linear." Then, re-enter your values in the inspector.
2.) If you are doing a single move or zoom, forego the transform tool altogether. Instead, use the "CROP" function to key frame / animate your move. (This is similar to how "Ken Burns" works, but with your own custom "holds" before and after the move. NOTE: There is no ease-in / ease-out that you get with Ken Burns.)
3.) Another work-around is to use the transform tool, but to NOT enter x and y "position" values. Instead, adjust your ANCHOR POINT (this has to be done in the inspectior) at the precise point where you wish to end your zoom. Manually, re-center your image in the canvas viewer. Then, set your key frames to start and end your move. In this work-around, the computer is simply "scaling" the image around your new anchor point, and not "re-positioning" along the x/y axis.
WHY? Moves in FCPX treat "scaling" and "positioning" differently. This is what causes the funky moves. Good luck.

10.7.5 is not Snow Leopard so we have to wait and see, the answers to the question I asked will define what it really is.

  • S206 Windows 8 64-bit drivers: Not a smooth install

I've just taken the plunge for Windows 8 via the upgrade offer, but seeing as I already got a copy for my desktop PC with the 64-bit disc included, and that the S206 I bought came preinstalled with 4Gb of RAM (almost half of which is unusable in a 32-bit environment), I decided to boot from the 64-bit disc through an external USB DVD rewriter and install fresh. I had previously made sure that the Lenovo support site had Windows 8 64-bit drivers available.
Well, was I in for a shock.
First of all, practically every installer tried to extract to the C:\Drivers folder, dumping all the files in a single subfolder with no hierarchy. Then it tried to access the individual files from sub-subfolders which didn't exist. The only way I could get them to install was to create the folders it was missing as the error messages cropped up, dump a copy of the driver files into those folders, click retry, and repeat until it said it was done.
Secondly, the Catalyst drivers didn't find any graphics card. I downloaded the latest version from the AMD website, and that picked it up fine.
Thirdly, when I installed the audio driver, it said that the device I had was not the one that the drivers were intended for, and it would install generic drivers instead.
Fourthly, the Lenovo energy management program defaulted to the balanced profile which was the only one to totally disable the backlight to the LCD screen. Boy did that one take some time to sort out.
Fifthly, installing the wireless and Bluetooth driver seems to have not added in Bluetooth. I'm fairly sure it had Bluetooth to start with. The network adapter is still using the Microsoft driver.
Sixthly, the webcam does not appear in my devices list. Skype can't see it at all. Neither driver supplied on the website can actually find a device. I have just had the laptop back from repair due to a faulty keyboard, and I've not actually had a need to test it before now so I wonder if it maybe was left disconnected or maybe the camera in the screen frame is a dummy - I may have to restore the old Windows 7 operating system to check that...
Finally, when I tried to install the Synaptics touchpad drivers, clearly marked as 32 and 64 bit in a single installer, the installer told me it's not designed for a 64-bit system and told me to get the correct version from my vendor! The Synaptics website doesn't have Windows 8 drivers up yet.
So basically the default drivers leave the PC in a working condition but I currently have no Bluetooth, no webcam, I'm stuck on either high or low performance energy management, basic audio with no options, basic touchpad with no configuration.
So, for Lenovo: Your drivers leave a lot to be desired and need reviewing.
For other users: If you want to adopt 64-bit Windows 8, prepare to spend a lot of time fiddling with drivers.
For anyone with more knowledge than me: Can anyone suggest how I might get the above hardware fully functional?

After seeing that Lenovo have updated some of their installers, I decided to give it another go and see if I could get 64-bit Windows 8 on it.
First hitch, it was a bit of a struggle getting the computer to recognise the USB DVD drive. In the end I had to plug it into the USB2 port (The not-blue one), go into BIOS, save and exit and immediately go back into BIOS before it would be recognised as hardware.
It seems Lenovo overhauled all their installers, because they all extracted with the correct folder hierarchy. The only problem was with the "WLAN Driver and Bluetooth Driver (Ralink, Atheros)" (0swg11ww.exe) which totally failed to find the correct target installation executables after extraction. Also I'm sure this laptop had bluetooth connectivity but it didn't find any bluetooth hardware, but I'm not bothered too much about that as I use Logitech devices with unifying recievers anyway. When I finished installing them manually I checked on a tip-off I read elsewhere on these forums that the installer keeps the computer using the Microsoft driver, rather than switching to the Broadcom driver. I told it to change drivers (Some fiddling about in Device Manager) and it works fine.
Lenovo Energy Management still installs with the "Balanced" profile having zero backlight brightness, totally out-of-line with the other two profiles. I note that while the RSS feed says Lenovo Energy Management was updated on 29/11/2012, the download page says the latest version available is the initial 24/10/2012 release. Also the WLAN/Bluetooth driver was supposedly updated on 09/01/2013 but the download page says the latest revision was released on 09/12/2012, and when I installed the AMD Catalyst graphics drivers (supposedly v8.0.881.0) it actually installed the latest version (v12.10).
Clearly in the case of the Catalyst drivers the page hasn't been updated to reflect the updated driver release, but the on the other hand Lenovo Energy Management software doesn't appear to have been updated at all. At least I have a copy of all the install files now though, so I can tell if anything does change by inspecting file sizes.
The computer is now in as useable a state as I would like it however, and this time it was for the most part a fairly smooth install.

  • Music not playing smoothly in iTunes

I recently updated my iTunes to the latest version and ever since then my music has been jerking and not playing smoothly. I've checked my computer's performance while iTunes and other applications have been open and all seems normal. I've run the setup file again and chosen "Repair", but nothing has changed.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    This version of iTunes 12.1:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
seems to address the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version (the installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer).  The "for older video cards" does not seem to fully define the scope of systems for which this alternative works better.

  • Firefox does not run smooth while loading websites.

Firefox does not work smoothly when it is loading any webpage. Specially, when I open new tabs and load new websites while it is still loading last website in other tab, the situation becomes worse. Main problems that occur are - page will not scroll, or scrolling hangs for a sec or so, works a little bit and it happens repeatedly, new tabs will open but not smoothly, website loading also gets affected in similar way. The dot that revolves on tabs while loading any webpage gets really annoying. It revolves intermittently. Imagine a car engine not starting, it starts, stops, starts, stops. That's what happens with Firefox. But once all webpages are completely loaded and scrolled 2 or 3 times from top to bottom of the page, then it is all good. All the problems occur when page is still loading in fore- or background in any or all of the tabs. I tried to run Firefox with all add-on and plugins disabled, tried to refresh Firefox from troubleshoot information. But nothing helps. I even uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. I guess my laptop is not having memory issues. I am using Windows 7 x64 based system. RAM is 4 GB. All other software work well. Most importantly, Chrome has no such issues in comparison to Firefox. Also, when IDM (internet download manager) takes over some downloads, the Firefox hangs for few seconds. Please help.
    Thank you.

  • SF 300-24P 24-Port 10/100 PoE - Video is not working smoothly

                       Hi,
We installed SF-300 24 ports that connected to our network and we connected 20 IP cameras to it. In the Giga ports we connected Video Server.
In the same Vlan but on another switch we connected 2 PC's that can monitor all the 20 IP cameras. Everything worked fine until we had electricity outage.
After that break the monitoring working very bad. The video streaming is not working smooth and it is working with some breaks. I reloaded the switch and everything was back to normal. Can someone send me any suggestions how to configure cameras and how to configure the servers on the port switch? Do I need to enable the smartport option?
    Thanks,
    Reuven

Hi Reuven, If everything was working as expected and then you had a network event such as a power failure where new symptoms arised, I do not believe this is a configuration issue unless you lost configuration settings. Is that the case? The switch lost configuration?
Having power issues has a funny way of making things have problems. One thing you may want to try to do is isolate your problem to every camera. Do all 20 cameras have an issue or just a few? Is there any symptoms if you disconnect the cameras one at a time?
If all 20 cameras have a problem, I'd recommend to make a back up of your switch and then factory reset the unit as it is possible the power issue caused some sort of corruption in the software.

  • Animation symbols not running smoothly in interactive pdf

I created an animated symbol on flash and placing it on the interactive pdf has been quite successful, except it does not animate as smoothly as I hoped it would.
Instead of looping a smooth animation on its own it requires the mouse to be hovered over the element area in a kind of sweeping motion in order for it to play keyframes, and sometimes with relatively smooth success and other times not. I've tried running the pdf in adobe reader in different computers and achieve the same results.
It was made for the NavCardSelected instance and the symbol itself is a relatively simple 'growing vine' animation, if that helps elaborate any more. Anyone have some kind of workaround to this?

I would check the Flash/SWF code to see if it requires any special events to be sent.

  • Problem with scrolling not being smooth

I recently had an updated version of Firefox installed on my computer (PC).But there is one feature of this new version that is actually worse than the old one.
When I scroll down to read multiple messages on message boards it doesn’t react the same as it did before the “upgrade”. It is not as “smooth” now as it was before when I scroll down through messages. This might seem like a small problem but it is a waste of time and hard on the eyes.
Each time I roll the wheel on my mouse one notch to move the messages up on my screen they move differently than they did before.
Now what happens is the increments that the screen moves in are much more discernible than before. Before the update, it was much more seamless and you couldn’t even notice any changes at all – it was more smooth – now it is very “jumpy”, to the point where you can’t read the messages as they scroll across the screen, which is the point. They move now in such noticeable or discernible increments that I can’t read them as they move – I have to wait until the screen stops.
I used to be able to read as I scrolled. This might not seem like a big problem but it is huge! It is way better to be able to read as you scroll – saves time and is way easier on your eyes.
Scrolling through newspaper articles or other internet articles doesn’t seem to be a problem because each mouse wheel click moves the screen in bigger “chunks”. It is the little movements that happen with message board reading that make it impossible to read and very hard on the eyes.
How do I fix this? Or can you fix this? Do I have to go back to the previous version of Firefox?
Please help. I hate this problem!
    ''title edited by a moderator''

    Firefox 13.0.1 'autoscroll'
You described the problem very well, and my problem is the same or maybe worse.
When I roll the wheel one notch the vertical scrolling takes off with a mind of its own.
The scrolling speed accelerates and decelerates in speed from start to stop.
    per the '- - tools-options-help' redirection to 'ff help-browsing':
    Browsing
Use autoscrolling: Autoscrolling is a useful feature which allows you to scroll the page by clicking the middle mouse button (usually the scroll wheel) and moving the mouse up or down. Some people find this annoying, so autoscrolling can be disabled with this option.
So I'm assuming this is the 'autoscroll' feature and is the way it was designed.
One click will start a short vertical scroll job of maybe 2 or so inches.
I don't like it because it is too erratic with too many clicks.
During the scrolling there is a horizontal slice of the page with noticeable distortion.
And if there is too much page-loading activity, the scroll is more erratic and is very obnoxious.
If it scrolls too fast I may click on the page and accidentally hit a link into a 'flash ad'.
Unchecking the 'autoscrolling' doesn't disable this undesired feature.
How do I get back to the 'one-line' per click scroll? What am I missing?

  • Upgraded to Lion, two finger tapping not as smooth as SL

Just upgraded to Lion today on my 13'' late 2010 MBP (2.4GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD and nVidia graphics). So far I'm adoring Lion, however tapping with two fingers is not as smooth as it was in Snow Leopard. When I tap, it takes a while to open a window. I've applied all the latest updates.
Is there a way to fix this?
    TIA!

    Softwater,
Well, I booted back into SL, and as I mentioned, I did have filesharing enabled.  So I added the whole disc as shared and re-booted back into Lion.
Still no luck. I get exactly the same permissions error and cannot open any files.  This seems crazy that from Lion I cannot open files on other bootable partitions.
I added myself as a RW permission on the disc via Get info and still cannot see the files. This is very strange behaviour.  According to get info on the disc, I have full read/write access and on the file itself.
I can see all the files on non-bootable partions.
