10.5 is taking my Icons away

Seasons greetings to all!
Have a minor grievance with 10.5 as far as the Dock is concerned (lets not start about my new network problems...)
Under 10.4 I had aliases in the Dock for Network connections, i.e. the icon of a Quicksilver for my old G4 Quicksilver Backup server. Cute but still helpful and recognizable at a glance (click, wait for connection & start backup...).
Now 10.5. makes a stack out of everything, and depending on what's listed first, I get a new Icon in my Dock every time any work is done on my file server. A workaround would be to view alphabetically and make a, say, aaa.txt file with a Quicksilver icon and keep it "on top" of the stack, but that has got to be the most inelegant fix
Is there any way to "lock" the icon of the alias of the network server connection?

Leopard 10.5.2 update is rumoured to include changes to the Dock. Meanwhile you might take a look at a utility called Quay.

I have windows 7. I uninstalled the theme background but it did not bring back my toolbar from before which had REFRESH on it.

Windows had fallen into BSoD taking all tabs away

Recently I had my laptop go BSoD. After I restarted Windows and launched Firefox, I realized that all of my opened tabs, carefully sorted into groups weren't there.
I googled some info about this issue and found out that all previous sessions are stored in sessionstore.bak / .js files.
So I downloaded Recuva and searched for those files in my firefox profile folder. Fortunately, most of them weren't corrupted, so I was able to recover them.
They hapened to be significantly larger, than current sessionstore file, so i felt like a hunter :)
My question is simple: How do I "feed" at least one of tose files back to firefox?
I tried replacing existing one, but browser kept overwriting it. What should I do?

Maybe my hands grow from wrong place or somthing, but neither Scratchpad nor session-file approach had result(
I didn't even find session.js file, since there are only sessionstore.bak and sessionstore.js.
Replacing both of them with old version of sessionstore.bak (and/or renamed to .js) didn't result in anything than completely new session and empty about:sessionrestore page.

How do i remove my old printer icon/software?

i recently bought a new printer and installed in on my mac, and am no longer using the old HP as the wireless radio doesnt work. the HP icon is still on my dock, and i want to remove the software and the icon. new printer is installed, but the icon isn't on the dock, and i have to search for it when i want to scan something. also, i want to put my cisco router icon on the dock as well. i am a longtime PC user who switched to this mac in march last year. still learning the ropes!

Removing Old Printer:
On your Dock, drag the Old Printer icon away from the dock. (A puff of smoke should show - this means you have removed it from the Dock)
Navigate to [System Preferences > Print & Scan].
(On the left of the Print & Scan window will be a white colored column, titled 'Printers', with a '+' and a '-' symbol at the bottom.) Click on the Old HP Printer, that is located in this column, and click the '-' symbol that is at the bottom of the white colored column titled 'Printers'.
Select 'Delete Printer' when the dialogue box shows.
Adding Printer Icon to Dock:
Navigate to [System Preferences > Print & Scan].
Drag the New Printer Icon (In the White Column titled 'Printers') and place it on your Dock.
Please note: You cannot add the Printer Icon next to the Icons near the Trash Can.
Keep moving the Printer Icon along the Dock until a gap opens for you to place the Printer Icon.
Adding the Router Icon to Dock:
As far as I am aware, this is not possible. Wi-Fi settings are located on the Title Bar at the top right hand corner, of every window.
There is no need to have the Router on the Dock.

Help please - phone icon only found in spotlight - how do i get it back!

OK - so ,,,,I was moving my apps around to try get them organised and as i normally do i moved the 4 main apps off the bottom bar onto a page so i could then move icons onto the bottom bar to quickly move them to the new pages.... are you following me!
Well I then started moving apps around all over the place but when i went to look for my 4 apps (phone, ipd, safari and mail) on a screen i couldn't find them anywhere. They can be found in spotlight but my question is.....how do i get the app icons back onto a screen!

If you have more than 180 apps, they won't all show on the screens. Try this:
Start by resetting the home screen layout: Choose Settings -> General -> Reset and tap Reset Home Screen Layout. That will put the original icons back in their original positions. The rest you have to move manually.
To get an icon to another page easily, with iPhone OS 3.0, you can drag the icon you want to move to the top right or top left corner of the page, and hold it there. The pages will keep flipping. When you've arrived to the page you want to add the app to, just move the icon away from the corner.

Dynamic visibility for icon

In my current dasboard i am using dynamic visibility functionality. So for that i am using 2 icons for pricing & costing,2 pie charts for pricing & costing.
for this i map like for each icon in destination property i gave i blank cell in excel. For corresponding pie chart in behavior tab ->Dynamic visibility for status tab i used that blank cell. Its working fine but when user click on icon1 then it showing the corresponding pie chart. when ever we click i con2 it show pie chart over the old one.
So my question is how to disable automatically the the first pie chart..

Hi Yogisha,
Insted of taking 2 icons i suggest you to take a radio button with lables Pricing and Costing.
Use of radio button makes the functionality clear and flexible as only one will be selected at any point of time .
Take source as pricing and Costing eg:Sheet1!$A$1:$A$2
Destination as blank cell eg:Sheet1!$C$1
take your pie chart for Pricing and Give status as Sheet1!$C$1
Key as Pricing(Sheet1!$A$1)
take your pie chart for costing and Give status as Sheet1!$C$1
Key as Pricing(Sheet1!$A$2)
Change the orientation of radio button as horizontal.
Note :Make shure that Key cell matches exact format in which labels are given .

Apple/Mac/OS X icon in dock

This is as weird as they come a question - I somehow poofed my apple os x icon away into computer heaven a while back and would like to get it back into the dock - that's that icon on the far right side of
the dock - I've looked everywhere for the icon but can't find it - any one help me?

Hello, seems to be a glitch with an icon on my desktop row at the bottom

Hi. The row at the bottom of the screen that has all of the different icons appears to have a visual glitch for my macbook pro.
When I first got the computer I deleted (dragged an icon away from the row and it poofs away) several unwanted icons. The one all the way on the left which acted as if you had just clicked macintosh hd was poofed away, however when I turn on my computer it has glitched its way to a set location on the screen.
In the bottom near-left edge the icon is sitting there and is not a part of the icon row. In fact when I add a bunch of icons to grow the row the real icons just kind of gow on top of it, as if the smiling face thing was just a normal part of the screen.
Sorry for being hard to decipher and vague but I hope my problem is understood as it is certainly quite bothersome.

Actually...if you read the original poster's first message carefully...you will see that he or she has managed to get an icon (probably an alias to the Finder) on the desktop BEHIND the dock and doesn't know how to get at it.
So... To solve that problem...
1) Go to the Apple Menu, Select Dock... Then Position on Left.
2) Right on the icon on your desktop (it should stay while your 'icon row' - that's the Dock - has moved to the left side of your screen) and select "Move to Trash". If you don't have an external mouse, press the CTRL key and click; the same menu will appear.
3) Go back to the Apple Menu, Select Dock... Then Position on Bottom.
Problem solved...

Help - Duplicate icons in top left corner of screen

Just been using my iPad, and during an app update (a free one from the apps store), my screen suddenly changed, and now the home screen has a pile of icons on top of each other in the top left corner of the screen. These icons are duplicates of the ones on my home screen, and the ones in the original places don't work.
I can drag these new icons away from the top left, and I end up with two of each icon on the home screen, but only one works. Also, I can drop them anywhere on the screen, and other icons don't move to make way like they did before. However, as soon as I scroll across to another screen and then scroll back to the home screen, the pile of icons is back in the top left.
There is also a new icon called Productivity, which looks like a container for other icons. I have no idea where this came from, as I've never seen it before. If I open it, it has three of my apps inside, messages, ibooks and notes. I can drag these back onto the home screen, but again, when I scroll away and back, things are as they were with the three apps inside this productivity.
Anyone any idea what's going on? The iPad is pretty unusable now.

Three of your apps ended up in a folder that was somehow created on your iPad. That folder was named Productivity by the iPad.
Restart or reset the iPad and see if you can control the apps on the screen afterward.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Icons won't stay on left of desktop

Hi,
I have a few icons that I like to keep on my desktop. I like to keep a few down the right-hand side of the desktop, and two or three on the left-hand side. Trouble is, with current settings, I can't get the icons on the left to actually stay at the very left-hand edge of the desktop. Those on the right are lined up right at the edge of the desktop, but those on the left are a good inch or more away from the L/H edge. If I move them nearer to the edge, they snap back into place.
I have the desktop set to arrange by snap to grid. If I change this to arrange by none, the problem goes away and I can put icons as far on the left as I want. But I'd rather have snap to grid on to kep things lined up neatly.
So to my questions: why does OS X keep icons away from the L/H edge of the desktop when set to arrange by snap to grid? And is there any way around it while keeping snap to grid on?
(If it matters, my screen resolution is 1680 x 1050.)

OK, that seems to have done the trick. I had to play around with the grid spacing – there seems to be a setting somewhere just right of the middle of the scale that enables icons to be positioned almost at the L/H edge of the desktop.
Thanks for your help. One of those ultimately unimportant but nonetheless annoying little issues.

My anniversary without sound

Greetings anyone who reads this quote, today probably I have 1 year and 2 months without no sound in my toshiba laptop. I have posted this several times before, but 'll do it again since noone has been able to resolve the problem, and im running out of options, to the point that is more viable buying a new laptop.
So, here goes my history (again):
One day I was using my computer, everything was normal, everything was working ok, including the sound. Then I decided to stop using the computer, so I lowered the screen and the laptop normally went to sleep. Next day I looked for it I noticed it wasn't sleeping anymore, because it ran out of batteries (a thing that has happened to me before, causing no troubles), then I just plug it in tu turn it on. Voila, normally it turn on, but something surprising happened, there was this little curious red ''x'' in the sound icon. Hmm, why this is happening I asked myself, well, it has happened to me before, and I knew the procedures that has to be done: re-installing the drivers, going to the device manager and check the components, looking for the correct drivers of the laptop, re-installing the operating system, and many other things that a lot of people have tried through out this forum that for me never worked.
I ran out of things to do, so I went to the toshiba repair center here in the Dominican Republic, its called Palm Center and Novalogic, they represent toshiba here in the country. So, they tried the same things I did, obviously it didn't work. By that time the computer was in warranty, now it isn't. Heres another curious thing, they ordered a new motherboard and speakers, we did it under warranty. They replaced it in my laptop, and nothing happened, there was still no sound. Like me, they were lost too. So they ordered a second motherboard and speakers under the warranty, but this time we couldn't replace anything, because I was in finals in college and I needed the laptop urgently, so they had to get back the parts to toshiba, and at the same time getting a penalty for that, and that penalty I guess it was taking the warranty away. They gave me that bad news, so I was stuck again for several months with the problem. Time passed, I couldn't do anything, also because I was in college and I needed the only computer I had.
I called again to the repair center here, they told me that they haven't tried using the original recovery discs. Well, again I tried another option, I bought those CDs or DVDs whatever they are, I used them, I thought that will fix the problem, but it didn't.
So, today I have more than a year with the problem, the laptop is a l505-GS5035, it has a new motherboard and speakers, and it has been return to the state of ''out of box'' that it was when bought.
I called again to the repair center to see what other option was possible, well, they told me we could try (again!) replacing the speakers and motherboard, but this time I will have to pay. Ok, give me the price first and Ill think. The results were around US$450.00, and obvious reaction was, that is better to wait a little longer and just buy a new laptop. So, if I send it to a repair center in the US, i'll have to pay extra shipping and stuff, so is not a good option either.
So, anyways, my question is, If I have a new motherboard, new speaker, and a out of box operating system, maybe something else could be the problem? Like, the RAM, or the Processor, or whatever. Isn't there any other way Idont have to pay US$450.00 or more to fix this (kind of money I don't have at the time).
Im hearing any opinion, I can give any information is needed, im tired of not having sound on a laptop that I worked hard to get.
Sorry if the message has emotional sense, but thats how I feel after all this time.

Bluetooth connectivity problems after iOS 5 install

Like may others who upgraded to ios 5 and found it was full of problems I to had issue with my handsfree in the car.
I have a Clarion unit and it worked fine although I could not download contacts and it would not list tracks playing from the phone however it did receive,make calls and do what handsfree is meant to.
I downloaded ios5 yesterday and like thousands of other people I found that although the Clarion unit connects with the iphone as soon as a call comes in or you try to make an outgoing call it would lose the bluetooth connection and revert to the call being continued on the iphone.
Having tried many different things to fix it I eventually pressed the on/off button together with the large button with the square on it until the Apple icon appears on the screen and the phone switches off and reboots. When you press the buttons first it will ask if you want to switch off, keep pressing the buttons until the icon appears and the phone switches off properly and reboots.
I went out to try it and so far so good it seems to work, hopefully this will resolve the issues.
Another problem I had was my iphone seemed to thinl I had headphones plugged into it and although you could make a call and the receiving end could hear you, you couldnt hear them.
A visit to the Apple store 35 miles away and 3 technicians, several reboots, a complete wipe and reinstall and taking the phone away to "have a proper look" and nothing!
The best they could do is give me a new iphone at nearly £200. I declined.
Later that evening my son was playing with the phone and took a picture and guess what? It no longer thought that headphones were connected!
It would seem Apple has slighlty lost its way in making easy to use performance systems. When issues arise in updates it has produced, Apple completely ignores them and lets down thousands of loyal customers resulting in their integrity being severely damaged.
Its not all about flooding the market with Apple products, its about selling to new and retaining existing customers so they reinvest again. If they continue to ignore problems and what customers are complaining about then how long does it take until people grow tired of Apple technology that doesnt work and buy elsewhere?

I have noticed the same thing! Any suggestions??? I also notice that when I uncheck the boxes for not including music videos and voice memos the size of the music folder increases, and it does it so much so that I exceed the space on my phone.

Deleted Photo Booth accidentally.

I got my first Mac a few months ago, and I accidentally deleted the photo booth application. I thought i was just taking the icon off the dock, but i removed the whole thing. Is there any way I can get it back, or DL it again? I haven't been able to find it in the DL section of this site.

Thanks, Niel! I had the same problem and - as you've suggested it - I downloaded Pacifist, which requires the 2 install disks that came with my iMac to be inserted one after the other. It's so much easier (practically 1-click away) to reinstall applications that have been deleted by complete accident, rather than performing a custom install manually.

What do you feel about the IOS7?!.. What does it tell you about Apple?..

I have been waiting for the IOS7 for so long.. it's nice but not as good as i expected.. apple was always considered to be thrilling with it's designs and innovation, but.. ..android seems to be way better than the new IOS. I just hope Apple will review and bring something to this IOS7 because i think it's great time they make something to it!.. Apple seems to be sinking again.. i hope it doesn't..

-battery empties way too quickly! (compared to how i normally use it)
-wallpapers don't fit well (even with the move and scale)

I hate the missing book genres as well. I think this is a big step backward, especially with the gaining popularity of audio books. I see commercials for audible.com daily on television and even a podcast I listen to weekly is sponsored by Audible.com. A large part of my iTunes library consisted of audio books and now it makes it much more difficult to find something I'm in the mood to listen to. I was hoping they would have expanded on the genres tab with an update, not taking the feature away. I had sent feedback previously wishing for a way to add even more genre artwork ourselves. For example, iTunes as it was would have lumped a good portion of my library under the generic "Science Fiction & Fantasy" section. In that one heading alone I had books broken into categories such as Epic Fantasy, Techno-Thriller, Cyberpunk etc. subgenres. Not to mention all the other types of books such as thriller, mystery, etc. Now I have NO way to sort them at all in any practical fashion by genre. Now I'll have to find an alternative program to use since audiobooks were what I used iTunes for the most. Or roll back to a previous version that did what I needed it to do.

Data plans in the new wireless world

I see an impending collapse of many peoples internet service approaching soon and very little discussion on the topic, so I decided to write this to help inform Verizon of some of its customers needs.
       What originally attracted me to Verizon was its effort to push beyond the big markets and reach all of America. Create a country where everyone is "connected". Join Verizon and we will take care of you no matter where you live. These are the ideas Verizon has pushed onto people over the years and I commend them on doing a very good job at reaching these goals. The issue is, they have acquired such a large customer base it is now creating problems. An excellent marketing tactic of wireless service providers was always to offer up unlimited data plans to attract people to their service and this used to create very little risk for the service provider because wireless data was slower the telegraph!! Cellular providers used to sell phones, now they sell computers. Have they adjusted to this new market accordingly?
       When you had a 3G phone or even back when it was 2G or 1XX paying extra for unlimited data was pointless. As Verizon's CFO recently pointed out "Unlimited is just a word" "people don't use near the data they think they do" this is exactly why they could profit from unlimited data in the past, because this was true. Have you ever tried to stream a hi-def movie on 3G service? you were lucky if it wasn't pausing to buffer every 10 secs, what did you do every time this happened, you stopped trying to watch it!! Therefore you didn't use the data required to stream that content. Now just when wireless technology is finally becoming fast enough to be useful or enjoyable, it is being shut down.
       The new 4G LTE services have finally made it possible to reach 8-10 MB download speeds on regular basis. You can stream a full 1080 hi-def Blu-ray quality movie with 7.1 surround sound if your internet connection speed is over 5 MB. This sounds great doesn't it, finally I can watch SyFy, Hulu or Vudu with my aircard. This is the problem Verizon is facing, because that one 90 minute movie from Vudu at 1080 hi-def just sucked up 5 GB!! No that was not a typo, full hi-def streaming video will push 4-5 GB in a couple hours. Verizon had to curtail this "excessive" data usage by reverting to tiered plans or "shared data" so with the new data plans that was a $50 movie, at that price you would once again stop watching it and not use the data required to stream that content.
       Verizon broadband could not handle this volume of data being used when people started getting 4G internet service, so they had no choice but to end unlimited plans or be faced with the reality that they could not support there millions of customers data usage. For most people this will not create a big issue because they probably still live somewhere that they have access to other internet services such as DSL, Cable, or the best at Fiber Optic. DSL and cable will usually have a plan that creates fast enough internet speeds for streaming video but you will have to pay for a premium service.
       This however does create a step backwards, in what seemed like a step forward for the rural community. 3G unlimited aircard was a great option for rural community's, finally offering them an affordable internet service that often could still play Netflix, as well as all the normal uses such as e-mail and browsing, although it would not stream a 1080 hi-def movie it could at times stream a standard-def movie. Now with unlimited going out the window all those people that thought it was going to be so great to upgrade to a 4G aircard and finally watch movies, quickly realized that wasn't going to happen and worse Verizon is showing signs of completely eliminating all unlimited data as they course through their contracts looking for legal ways to stop honoring them, and for those that they can not stop honoring they have started to "throttle" usage when it exceeds a certain amount usually around 2 GB a month. This is perfectly legal to do, almost all ISP's will do this this when you exceed a certain amount of data, the difference is when your ISP offers 8 MB connection speeds and throttles you down to 5 MB speeds because you use a lot of data, you never really notice it unless you download media instead of streaming it and your downloads seem to take longer then normal but it doesn't effect you enough to complain. When your internet speeds are 1-2 MB as they are with 3G service, throttling brings you down to 300-600 KBPS!! They will throttle your speed down so much that you can't do much of anything except e-mail and browsing, Netflix will not work anymore, so thinking you can stay with a 3G device and just keep what you have isn't an option. They are forcing everyone into new plans.
       In the past it was very hard to use 10 GB of data on a wireless carriers broadband because speeds were to slow to allow use of all the online media. Now it is very easy to use 60 GB a month if you like movies and online TV. (That is 60 GB without downloading any media just streaming it) Perhaps if we are lucky Verizon will once again return to the table and look for ways to help their rural customers without taking are internet away from us. If I could pay for DSL from my local phone company I would, but I do not even have a phone line tied to my house, and if I decided to get one it still would not have internet access. But due to Verizon's efforts in expanding there 4G service across the country as quickly as possible I do have excellent 4G wireless service available in my home. Just as I thought it was time to get a Verizon aircard and start watching movies again, they told me you will never be able to afford it.
      If Verizon can create a rural community data plan for users that have no other means to access the internet and and it doesn't cost $600 a month then I will happily buy it, and also understand that it cannot cost $30 a month either, but if people could get, Phone, Internet (with say 50 GB limit), TV (by tv I don't mean Verizon TV that I agree should be an addition to the bill, i mean the free hulu, syfy and payed netflix accounts that are accessible with any internet connection fast enough to stream), Movie Store in their living room (Vudu) all in one package I think that $200 a month is a reasonable price.
     Now all I can do is wait and see who calls first. If Verizon creates a new data plan that allows media streaming at a reasonable price ill buy it. If my Local phone company offers me high speed internet and phone first, ill buy that instead and throw my current $140 month Verizon bill in the trash when I end the contract. I will not have 2 phones, I only have a Verizon phone because I have no Land line in my home. So I guess the race is on to see who can maintain the rural community's business.
