10.5.x mail server migration to 10.6 (non upgrade)

Hi all,
So I have been reading up on the various issues with upgrading 10.5.x servers to 10.6 however my question involves going from a 10.5.x server to a clean 10.6 server (non upgrade install). I generally start fresh with a new OS and migrate the data anyway however this is the first time I have experienced a switch away from cyrus (Instead of to cyrus which I have done enough now).
Has anyone done this yet? With the switch to dovecot, I am unsure how this works from a migration standpoint. Can I just use ditto to move the mail stores over and then the new dovecot server will simply recognize everything? I somehow feel like it can't be that easy with cyrus involved (though cyrus has worked well for me).
I recall seeing an imap sync tool some use here to transfer imap mail to a new / different server. Would that be the preferred method? Mailbfr hasn't been updated for 10.6 yet so I can wait for that amazing software as well but I am itching to test our mail stores and scripts, etc out on the test box.
I have a test server that is being freed up this week so I'll try myself anyway but was wondering if anyone had performed this sort of migration yet in a non upgrade fashion?

Kerio provide a free tool to do IMAP migrations to Kerio, something similar for (Snow) Leopard Server would be nice. However it might be possible to do basically the same thing via the command line using Dovecot's own routines.
See http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration
That page also refers to an open source utility called imapsync to do direct IMAP transfers, it looks like it is a Perl program and should run on a Mac (it will almost certainly need some Perl modules adding and this requires you to install XCode). Ah! I have just found another tool called Larch which is written in Ruby, this looks from reports to be more flexible and more reliable.
imapsync - http://freshmeat.net/projects/imapsync
Larch - http://github.com/rgrove/larch/tree/master
Let me know if you successfully do an IMAP->IMAP migration. If anyone manages to use Larch under Mac OS X let us know what was involved. I have done some Perl, and a bit of PHP but never touched Ruby before.
I've used imapsync in the past; it is fairly reliable, although there are definitely a few caveats that you must read the documentation to catch (for example, there is a command-line switch that, if not used, will reset the sent/received dates of ALL transferred email to the current date, and another that is used to preserve the seen/unseen status). Getting it up and running requires (or at least required, as of my last use of it back in July of this year, on a 10.5 server) installing of a few Perl modules from CPAN as well, necessitating the installation of XCode on the server; you are correct on that point. That being said, it's a pretty handy tool for doing a wide variety of migrations, as it doesn't care WHAT the source and destination mail servers are, so long as they both speak IMAP. There are, of course, minor issues if the source server is Microsoft Exchange, since Exchange's IMAP implementation is a bit ... nonstandard ... at times.
Just my $0.02 on that topic

    Hi all,
I have a client who wants to migrate his windows mail server to Mac OS X Tiger. Is it possible? If yes, how?
    Thanks in advance
    regards,
    Pradeep
      Mac OS X (10.4.4)

We migrated from MS Exchange 2000 to OS X Server Mail, just 15 users but tons of gigabytes of mail. What i did:
-set up IMAP on Exchange 2000 (we already used it), all mail has to be stored on the server
-set up Mail Service on OS X
-set up User Accounts on OSX Server, activated Mail for each user
-synced each user account from an OS X client computer using "imapsync". It works like an IMAP client copying all mail to the new mail server, it can keep the seen flag and does not produce duplicate mails. there is a description how to invoke imapsync automatically for a list of users.
-did a reconstruct -r on OS X Server to be sure the mailboxes are clean
you can get imapsync via darwinports.
    it's worth the work...

  • Mail Server -Migration

    hi,
how to backup data on serveradmin at maintenance that shown email user and qouta to new mailserver, i already backup all user and mail storage using mailbfr and LDAP(WGM) but when i check on new mailserver using serveradmin on maintenance division there has no content.
    i already backup cyrus..what should i do?
can anyone recommend to me how first thing first i should do.
procedure to backup old mailserver to new mailserver
    pls help me

I presume you are looking to migrate emails currently stored on a mail server to your new proposed Mac mini mail server.
There are generally three approaches, if the old mail server stores the emails in a suitable format, one option is to migrate those, however with the wide variety of different servers in use this approach is rarely one that will be possible unless for example you are moving say a postfix implementation on Linux to one on the Mac.
The second more common and generally more successfull approach is to use a tool that logs in to the old server via IMAP and then copies the messages for each user account to the matching account on the new mail server. Some utilities might be more successfull than others are preserving things like read status and any message flags so testing would probably be advised.
The third approach is to export the messages from the users email client and then reimport them once they have been switched to the new server.
By the way, a lot of people including myself prefer Kerio (on a Mac server) to using Apple's own Mail Server software.
What is your current (old) mail server software?
Kerio provide a free IMAP migration tool for migrating to their mail server from another IMAP server. See http://www.kerio.com/connect/imap-migration-tool there are many other IMAP migration tools out their e.g. Google provide one for migrating to Google Mail service, and some of these are free some are commercial, an example free one that can be run on a Mac is imapsync see http://freecode.com/projects/imapsync it's written in PErl and hence can be run on a Mac although you might need to install Apple's (free) XCode in order to be able to compile any extra Perl modules you may need.

Ask your carrier to send you the settings over wifi and then install them that way.
I'm on giffgaff and I used the giffgaff app from the store to sort this out.
Overall though I must say Apple has let itself down on this as why isn't something written in the ios script that keeps the original settings??

  • Please help, After mac 10.5.8 mail server migrated to snow leopard server?

    Hi,
All my old emails date has changed to the date on which i migrated to snow leopard server, all the old emails show as they arrived on 31st of Dec 2009.
How do I fix it. Very Very important to me to have the arrived date.
    Please help
    Thanks,
    Gulab Pasha

here is a link of other users having wrong date problems after upgrading to 10.6
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2134525
Some people have managed to fix their date problems. The easiest workaround is to add the column "Date Sent" under (View->Columns->Date Sent) in mail.app and to sort by the send date not the received date.
    Hope this helps

  • An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available.

I've seen various people that have experienced the issue of having the following message appear when setting up an email account in Outlook 2013 "An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available" however none of the solutions i've came
across have helped me so far.
The Windows 7 laptop I was installing office 2013 on previously ran office 2007 and the email worked fine on it (it's a Microsoft 365 email account). I had a spare license for office 2013 so I uninstalled office 2007 and installed office 2013. But when I
tried to set up the email got the message "An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available".
I tried the same email address in outlook web app and it works fine. I've tried setting it up on a Windows 8 pc and also another Windows 7 laptop both with Outlook 2013 and it works fine, so I knew it wasn't the email settings server side etc. that was causing
the problem, so I therefore thought it was a computer issue. I also tried manually setting the email up instead of using auto-discover but that didn't work either.
I have uninstalled and re-installed office again to see if that worked but experienced the same issue.
Yesterday on a whim I tried another email on the affected laptop (it's a colleagues and also same domain email and also a Microsoft 365 account) and it worked ok. I'm now thinking that there must be some file somewhere or something in the registry blocking
the email being set up again as it was previously used on the laptop.
Anyone with any suggestion I've been stuck on this for a couple of weeks now and it's really bugging me?
(I originally posted this in the office forum but they referred me here).

    Hi Dave-Houston,
According to your description, I notice that you cannot properly configure Outlook with your primary office 365 account after reinstall Outlook client.
If I have misunderstand your concern, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
If possible, please try to configure your e-mail account on another computer. If it works fine, it indicate that the issue is relate to your computer, for example residual registry information about primary account, incorrect username and password.
Please try to open Control Panel--> User Accounts---> Credential Manager, double check whether store some incorrect credential. If so, we can delete it and try again.
Additional, please try to re-create a user account  for testing. More details about

  • Problem migrating from 10.5 to 10.6 mail server: cvt_cyrusdb does not exist!

    The problem
I am migrating a mail server from 10.5 to 10.6 (as the first step to moving to 10.8).
I'm trying to migrate mail from Cyrus to Dovecot, using the command migrate_mail_data.pl but I keep getting the error:
Error: cvt_cyrusdb does not exist in: .
    Background
An example of how to use the command is at:
    http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/dovecot/dovecot-239/dovecot.Config/migrat e_mail_data.pl
    Example: migrate_mail_data.pl --cyrusBin "/Volumes/Tiger/usr/bin/cyrus/bin" --database "/Volumes/Tiger/var/imap" --sourceSpool "/Volumes/Tiger/var/spool/imap" --targetSpool "/Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail "
    So, the syntax is:
sudo [location of migrate_mail_data.pl command] --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin "[location of cvt_cyrusdb binary]" -- database "[location of original mail database] "--sourceSpool "[location of original spool files]" --targetSpool "[location of destination files]"
    Locating my files
    Locate all of my files:
    sudo find / -name migrate_mail_data.pl
    /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl
    sudo find / -name cvt_cyrusdb
    /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cvt_cyrusdb
--database files are at the default location:
    /private/var/imap
--sourceSpool files are at the default location:
    /private/var/spool/imap
    --targetSpool is set for:
    "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail"
    What I've tried
So, I've tried the following commands (and many other variations!):
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin "/usr/bin/cyrus/bin" -- database "/var/imap" --sourceSpool "/var/spool/imap" --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail"
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin "/usr/bin/cyrus/bin/" -- database "/var/imap/" --sourceSpool "/var/spool/imap/" --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail/"
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/ -- database /var/imap/ --sourceSpool /var/spool/imap/ --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail/"
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin /usr/bin/cyrus/bin -- database /var/imap --sourceSpool /var/spool/imap --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail/"
All give me the same error:
Error: cvt_cyrusdb does not exist in: .
    Interpretation
The error message tells me (perhaps I'm misunderstanding!) that there is a problem with this part of the command:
    --cyrusbin "/usr/bin/cyrus/bin"
because that's what defines the path to  cvt_cyrusdb
But 'Find' has told me the location of that cvt_cyrusdb command and I can see it in the GUI, too!
    Help!
    What am I doing wrong?
    With thanks in anticipation,
    Kevin

    Thanks for your advice, MrHoffman.
I was trying to avoid taking the mail server down for more than a few minutes so wanted to:
    a. clone and migrate the server configuration to the new machine
    b. take server offline
    c. copy data to new machine and convert it from Cyrus to Dovecot
    d. take server online
Due to the problem with converting the data, it looks like my only option will be to take the mail server down for some hours while I perform all of those operations.
I was really hoping that there might be a simple answer to invoking the cvt_cyrusdb command!
Can anyone tell me how I might fix that?

  • Migration scenario from 3rd party mail server to GW12?

    Hi
We need to migrate from existing e-mail server (Axigen ) to GW12.
The main concern is how to do that as quickly as possible or step by step without disrupting mail traffic and users.
    Here is the situation:
In local network there is mentioned Axigen mail server serving aprox 70 users at single location.
Our official domain is hosted outside by Hosting provider where their mail server forwards all mail to our DDNS address where is ported to local mail server. Forwarding is performed discrete on user base. Each [email protected] is forwarded to [email protected]. where local server taking over.
This setting is harder to maintain because it is necessary to maintain users and aliases on outside server manually. However, this setting has some advantages. First of all, forwarding is happened immediately. If for some reason , local server is unreachable, outside server will keep on trying for two more days.
Second advantage is that we can use anti spam and virus blocking at the providers side.
Both functionality we could'nt achieve with simple global forwarding of all mail to local server.
This comment is digresion from main topic.
Outgoing mail is relayed by local server over our Internet Connection provider's SMPT host.
    Local mail is delivered locally.
We maintain local DNS server too.
Most users are using POP service, while IMAP is used by few only. All users are using Thunderbird so far.
All users in the future should use full GW capabilities with regular GW client, mobile clients and so on.
GW12 server is installed and up already. It is tested locally and tested for remote sending. So, only remote receiving is not tested yet, so neither correct domain is set yet.
Present users authentication is performed by Axigen server and LDAP connection to eDir. STARTTLS is used between clients and server.
Our plan is simple to change local DNS record point to new GW server, to change NAT/routing point to new server and set correct domain for the GW server.
We expect that this will be transparent for users while they will continue to use Thunderbird (certificate mismatch will be issued by first connection and first mail sending. But we plan to warn users in advance together with instructions what to do. My phone will ring that morning many times, I am sure). Few IMAP accounts we can prepare in advance by move mail manually to local folders and back to GW server later.
Latest step should be migrate users from Thunderbird to GW client. This need to be perfomed manually at each user seat. Each Thunderbird client need to be switched to IMAP and then mail need to move to GW server.
Here is concern about old mail volume. Many users have their old mail archived in local folders by years. Some of them has quite huge amount of archived mails with heavy attachments. However old mail can be moved gradually later.
So, this is our plan. Does anybody has any suggestion, comment or wish to point some problem we didn't aware of?
    Thank you.

most of this sounds good. With such heavy imap/pop usage, you MIGHT
want to consider installing a temporary dedicated gwia just for that
separate from the smtp handling gwia. But that might not be necessary at
all. 70 people isn't THAT much.

  • Server Migration - Mail Problems

We currently have a PowerMac G5 (Server 10.5.2) that hosts our email, DNS, DHCP, and LDAP. We purchased a Xserve and have migrated our DCHP, DNS, and LDAP perfectly through the Server Admin tool, but how to we move our mail store from one machine to the other? We tried tar-balling the /var/spool/imap directory and moving it the other machine, but it didn't take. What are we missing here?

Since I tried some more stuff on the weekend and ran into more troubles, I decided to reinstall the Leopard server from scratch again. Did it yesterday, updated via Software update, connected the SAN, ran the "Mail Server" setup assistant and pointed the directory again to our iSCSI SAN.
I once again get the same error messages, nothing "tweaked" in the mail settings, this is still the clean, brand-new server:
    mail.log just says:

  • Migrating from office 365 to OSX Server 2.2.1 Mail server.

    hi folks,
I am considering setting up an OSX Server v 2.21 and using it as my main mail server at home, and migrating away from office 365, and using the OSX mail server as my main server. I have my own domain name, and i would be the only user of the mail server.
I would be running this on a mac mini i7 with 16 GB ram.
what anti virus / spam applications are there available for the mac mail server?
    thanks.

The power in your computer is fine.  I was just trying to warn you that if any network requests come in the server configuration immediately priorises that higher than interacting with the user sitting that the keyboard.  Apps you are using may stutter until the network request has been answered.  Of course, if you don't have many network users and with a computer that powerful, it probably won't take the server long enough to answer the network request that you notice any problem.
No webmail portal for mail, and no easy way to add one.  Just mail apps using POP, SMTP, etc..

  • Best Way to Migrate to Mail Server

I want to get off of Google Mail. I have a mini with Lion Server 10.7.3 on it. I had my ISP add a PTR record to their DNS server. I'm thinking I should be able to just point my DNS server to the new server and then point my Mail app to the server on the mini. Of course, I am thinking that if this doesn't work, it might make a mess and reverting might be a nuisance. (I am a programmer, not an admin.)
Should I maybe make a subdomain and get that working first? e.g. webmail.<domain name>.com?
    Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Unfortunately keeping the OS-X Server alive as an archive is not an option because there's major corruptions in this server right now and I need to completely format it and reinstall from scratch once the mail is migrated into Exchange. The problem is the server's datas as been transferred/copied/migrated from an old XServe (10.6 Server) into a Mac Pro Server (Mid-2012 generation, bought in summer 2013), then upgraded to Lion Server and finally to Mavericks Server.
Actually Mail/iCal/Contacts are the last services running on this server (with Open Directory for authentication). After the format/reinstall the OS-X Server will only act as :
    - Profile Manager
    - Software Update
    - Caching
I'll probably use the MacPro (12-core, 32 GB) to video processing and use a MacMini i7 as server.
Everything on the server's side will now be running on few Windows Server 2012 (R2) on a true servers hardware (HP Proliant) incling Active Directory Domain, File Server, Print Server, DHCP, DNS, Terminal Server, VPN, etc. And mail service will be provided by Microsoft Exchange 2013 hosting service (Office 365).

  • Migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server

    Hi all,
I'm looking to migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server.  I work for a company with roughly 30 employees and they use exchange for mail, contacts and calendars.  We want to take full advantage of OSX Server and to completly get off of exchange.
What are the best ways to do this?  Are there any tools available to help this process?

I agree with the points made by Strontium90. If you have any PCs then Apple's mail/contacts/calendar software is a poor choice. Kerio Connect as a mail/contacts/calendar server would not only support Macs but would also do a good job supporting PCs running Outlook.
If you are going to become a pure Apple site, then you could use just the Apple software and this would be cheaper than using Kerio. For 30 users this might be a suitable solution, however even in a pure Apple environment many people prefer Kerio. For example I find Kerio much more pleasent when dealing with email addresses across multiple domains, email aliases, email group addresses, and so on. Kerio also has built-in email archiving, that is keeping a record of all emails. Kerio also provides a web-browser client for accessing email, calendar and contacts. It is worth noting that as standard Mountain Lion Server no longer includes a webmail feature. While I personally find the Kerio webclient rather ugly it does work.
There are some annoyances I have with Kerio, firstly they have always charged a 'maintenance' fee for their software. This provided access to software updates, and in the past also provided access to Kerio technical support. Unfortunately they now only let you make two (2) support cases per year for that cost, and you now have to pay extra for any more cases. Also while they added support for EWS (Exchange Web Service) to allow using Outlook 2011 for Mac as a supported email client, they did a poor job of this so that it does not work properly with any other EWS compatible client. This means it will not work in EWS mode with Apple Mail, nor with Outlook for Windows. While there are other ways to connect these other clients, this seems a foolish move and there have been plenty of requests to fix this.
Apple's Mail client uses EWS to connect to a 'real' MS Exhange server.

  • Migrating FROM Gmail to 10.6 Mail server

I am in the process of setting up a new 10.6 Server to be used for internal Mail, iChat, iCal, Wiki, & File Sharing. We are currently using Gmail for all email.
Can anyone recommend the best way to move all current emails in each account on Gmail to the SL Server that I am setting up possibly in a manner that involves as little downtime as possible?
Each user (around 45 of them) with the exception of five Mac users in the company who use Mail, are all using Gmail's web interface. I have thought about installing an email client (all using win xp or vista) using IMAP and DL all emails to their computer, but this leaves the only copy of that email on that computer system, and would be a pain when their station has to be switched out for any reason to move the emails to the new system. Recommendations?

That you're asking this question is somewhat concerning.
Depending on the tool (and in the typical case), you're transferring messages directly from one mail server to another mail server.
Actually, since this is the first Mac OS X server, and mail server at that matter, that I have set up, I do believe that this is a valid question, and shouldn't be alarming one bit. I have not yet turned on the mail server, nor have I begun to delve into all of the documentation yet, as the mail server is the last part to implement.
Presuming imapsync, you're using a tool that pretends to be a mail client to two different mail servers in parallel; it pulls down messages from one and synchronizes those messages directly to another server.
For another document on the imapsync tool, here is the [imapsync readme|http://www.linux-france.org/prj/imapsync/README] via [Freshmeat|http://freshmeat.net/projects/imapsync>
Thank you for the direction to some more documentation on imapsync!

  • Migrating From Exchange To OSX Mail Server Question

I'm switching my small business to a Mac based office from Windows. I'm thinking about OSX Server (or Snow Leopard Server when it comes out). I'm comfortable with everything about it, but not being much of an IT person, I have a question about the Mail Server.
We have 7 employees. Each will have his own email account. We will also have one "group" email account that we will all need to access. On my current Exchange server, it's no problem. I haven't read anything about the Mac Servers that allows this from ALL the clients. Can this be done with the Mac servers and if so, where can I read about it?
I will also need to be able to manage the server remotely. I assume there's no problem with that, yes?
Sorry for what may seem to be naive questions, but this whole point is to be able to get rid of the PC crap and all the complications that come with it. Thank you in advance for your help.

You can set Access Control Lists on mailboxes allowing other users to have access to them. So, your Group email account would be an eighth user per se, and the other seven users would see this user's Inbox in their folder list.
Note that there is no GUI for doing this. You either need to use the command line tools to configure this or a third party GUI tool called SirAdmin.
Yes, OS X Server can be managed remotely, using a variety of tools ranging in complexity and power. It is UNIX after all

    Dear Outlook.com Customer,
About a month ago, we let you know that Outlook.com no longer supports new custom domain sign ups. As a current customer, we will continue to support the ability to log in to Outlook.com with your existing custom domain email address, but as of 31 July 2014,
you will no longer be able to add or remove accounts in your domain.
Instead, we recommend that administrators who wish to continue managing email addresses in their domain should consider Office 365 – Microsoft's premium online email service. By migrating to Office 365, you will be able to continue managing your custom domains,
as well as benefit from modern enterprise-class mail, collaboration and communication tools.
The previous email we sent you contained a complimentary 90-day subscription to Office 365 Small Business Premium for 5 users. This is a reminder that you need to redeem this offer before 15 July 2014.
You will still be able to log in to Outlook.com with your custom domain during your Office 365 subscription, even if you choose to cancel your Office 365 subscription.
    How to migrate your account
You can find a step-by-step guide to migrating your account here.

    Hi,
Yes, as what Roady says, Outlook.com no longer supports new custom domain sign-ups. You can continue to login to Outlook.com with your existing custom domain email addresses. But after July 2014, domain administrators will no longer be able add or remove
    email accounts in your domain.
Please consider to move to Office 365 to get enhanced features and capabilities for modern enterprise-class mail, collaboration and communications. About how to move your custom domain to Office 365, please refer to:
