10.6.1 New Permissions Difference....?

Hey all. This is the newest permissions difference I have after updating to 10.6.1. Can someone tell me if this was a normal part of the update/is known to Apple or if this was an update error?
The difference:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Thanks!

Here is the other SUID that many of us have for the Remote Desktop Management.
+Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.+
And this one that you mentioned:
+Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.+
Those are the only 2 SUID that I know of at this time for 10.6.1

  • CRM HTML Administration - Creating New Permissions

    Hello friends,
I was wondering if there are ways to create new Permissions through CRM HTML Administration. I tried to create a new Permission, but was only asked for a Name and Description. I am sure there must be some code behind it. Is there any way to deploy new Permissions in 11.5.10.2? If there is documentation around it, kindly point me to it.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Safari 4.0.4 update creates 7510 new permissions problems

Prior to installing Safari update, running the 'Repair Permissions' in Disk Utility found only one error -- the SUID modification on ARDAgent (Apple Remote Desktop Agent). Apple documents this as being a known issue, but harmless and can be safely ignored. (I'm on OS X 10.6.2 -- if you're still on Leopard then you probably see more errors reported by Disk Utility.)
AFTER installing the Safari update, running the 'Repair Permissions' now finds 7511 errors (7510 new issues).
Most of the errors (I confess I did not actually read all 7510 of them line-by-line) indicate that permissions on the files have been modified to -rw-rw-r-- when they should have been -rw-r--r-- (in Unix that means they've added 'write' permission to make the files group-writeable when they should have been just owner-writeable and universally read-able.)
People have been commenting on the sloppiness of Apple's file permissions for years. It would be so trivial for Apple to catch this during their testing.... after applying the patch, check Disk Utility's 'Repair Permissions' and see if the patch introduced new errors and, if so, correct them prior to releasing the patch.
The good news is that Disk Utility does correctly repair the permissions. If you run a 2nd pass of 'Repair Permissions' you'll see that all the new errors introduced by Safari 4.0.4 patch are cleaned up.

    Hello Tim:
Ignore the list. All of us have seen that and have reported it to Apple.

  • Repair permissions differences

    Hi,
What are the differences of repair permissions from Applications/utility/disk utility and from system DVD?
only special permission? i think is better do it from system because is more upgrade. what do you think about?

Most of the time what Malcolm said is correct. Use the Disk Utility on your hard drive. However, the key is if there is a difference in the version of Disk Utility on your installer disc and the version on your hard drive. If the versions are the same then it makes no difference whether you repair permissions using DU on the hard drive or on the installer disc.
There should be little need to repair permissions. However, some software writers create poorly written software or poorly written installers that somehow figure out how to make a mess of your permissions. If you have no problems launching applications or accessing files then it's unlikely there are any serious permission related problems.
A good precaution before doing any system updates either through Software Update or using standalone updaters is to repair the hard drive and permissions before updating. You must boot the computer from the OS X installer disc (or another hard drive) in order to repair the hard drive. It's usually more convenient to repair permissions at the same time. Generally this is not a problem.

  • New Permissions messages after Security Update/more curious than concerned

I just installed the latest security update 2010-001. I repaired permissions afterward and encountered messages I've not seen before. I got "Permissions Repair complete."
2010-01-24 10:14:37 -0500: ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
2010-01-24 10:14:37 -0500: ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
2010-01-24 10:14:37 -0500: ACL found but not expected on "Library".
I googled around a bit and what I found interesting was the majority of threads relating to this date back to 2008 after the release of 10.5.2. The consensus then seemed to be these messages were completely harmless. I did find one very recent topic though, that reported these messages appearing just after the current security update. I'm wondering if anyone else has now encountered these after updating?
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg56086.html
Not that I understand ACLs very well, but I'd like to know what might the consequences or implications be of these Permissions having been changed--if this is what has happened--by the update. (Or, probably less likely, is DU after updating, now set to find things that were always there?)
I don't think I've done anything else that would account for these. (I didn't repair Permissions just before running the update, so I can't say conclusively they weren't there before--although I have done Permissions fairly recently. Why might these be appearing now? Thanks.

these messages are harmless and should be ignored. there is nothing new about that.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925
the ACLs present on those folders should be there. those repair permissions messages are just false positives due to errors in permissions database. just about every update introduces more such errors.
if you want to see the actual ACLs on those folders run this in terminal
    ls -lade /Applications /Applications/Utilities /Library
all of these folders should have "everyone deny delete" ACLs to prevent accidental deletion.
    VK's Computer>ls -lade /Applications /Applications/Utilities /Library

  • Repair Permissions differences between Onyx and Disk Utility

If I repair permissions, there are a large number of 'repaired permissions' if I switch between using Onyx (10.6) and Disk Utility. Most of them are in
    System / Library / CoreServices
    System / Library / Java
    System / Library / Frameworks
Why should this be? It makes me think that either Onyx or Disk Utility is doing it wrong. If I had to back which one it is, I'd have to say Onyx is the likeliest suspect. In other words should I avoid using Onyx to repair permissions and just use DU in future?

should I avoid using Onyx to repair permissions and just use DU in future?
Probably, but some permission results are always and repetitively wrong:
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.

  • Shopping for new HD: Difference between SATA and SATA II? / Compatibility?

I'm looking for a new HD to replace the original, now failing Maxtor drive in my G5 tower (1.8 Ghz dual processor, purchased in Aug. 2004), and have just about settled on the Western Digital Caviar SE16 series. It seems there are two types -- SATA and SATA II -- and I'm not sure about how to make a decision on which particular WD model to buy.
Will either type work in my machine? Or would the SATA II have potential compatibility problems? I read somewhere in these forums that someone with a G5 had bought an SATA II drive, and it wouldn't run with his system. (He said he had to reset some jumper switches to reduce the transfer rate of the drive [??], but now I'm told elsewhere that SATA drives don't have jumper switches.)
Kinda confusing trying to choose the right drive, so any help is appreciated.
Also, am wondering if there are any connectivity parts (power cable, SATA cable, screws, etc.) in particular that wouldn't come supplied with the drive. (I'll be ordering a retail drive, not OEM or refurb, so hoping it might come with everything I need.)
    TIA,
    Steve

    Tom,
Thanks for the info. I don't see the 250GB w/ 16MB cache drive that I was looking for, but OWC has a very good price on the 500 GB drive. A few questions for clarification:
    - Re: +"The later model SATA II drives often have a jumper to limit transfer rates to 150."+ -- Any tips on finding out if these jumper switches are present in a particular drive? OWC doesn't specify this, and this info seems to be generally hard to find.
    - Re: +"...some are SATA I/II which are designed to work on both types."+ -- Same problem here... I'm not finding any info in the various drives' specs on this. To make this easier on myself, I'd rather get a drive that I don't have to mess with jumper switches, or at least be able to determine if a particular drive will present SATA I / II issues. Any additional info you (or others) can provide may be helpful.
    - Will upgrading to a drive with 16MB cache give me an improvement in performance? And are there any compatibility issues with my particular G5? (I'm assuming a 16MB cache drive will work fine with my machine, and based on my reading they do provide a speed boost.)
    Thanks for any info...

  • New permissions errors with OSX 10.5

I have a script that I have been using to transfer files from one account to another under OSX 10.4. However, with the change to 10.5, I have started to get permissions errors. Just wondering what has changed.
The shell script runs under an executable wrapper (for security), with the “s” permissions bit set:
    #define REAL_PATH "/Users/Shared/transferFileScript"
    main(ac, av)
    char **av;
    execv(REAL_PATH, av);
    The permissions are:
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root myadminacct 11532 Apr 22 2005 wrapper
The script itself is as follows:
    #!/bin/sh
    mkdir /Users/"$1"/Desktop/Transferred_Files
    /Developer/Tools/cpMac -r "$2" /Users/"$1"/Desktop/Transferred_Files/
    chown -R "$1" /Users/"$1"/Desktop/Transferred_Files
    Here are its permissions:
    -rw-r-xr-x 1 root myadminacct 180 Dec 31 2004 transferFileScript
The whole mess is executed via an AppleScript (which provides the user interface). No special permissions on that.
As I said, it worked fine in 10.4. Any thoughts as to what is going wrong? Thanks in advance.

    Eric S wrote:
Thanks for the suggestion. In doing an "id", it appears that Leopard has left all the group settings alone (I did an upgrade, rather than a clean install).
OK, I did that initially. However, the groups with gid and name the same as your uid and name don't really exist, so I'd bet this is still the cause of the problem.
Maybe I should have specified where the error is occurring... The AppleScript runs and it executes the wrapper, which in turn begins executing the Unix script. The permission error occurs when the Unix script tries to execute the "mkdir" command.
I can't help with AppleScript, but if it is failing on a "mkdir" you should look at the permissions on the parent directory.

  • Color (not the new app) differences in Final Cut Pro vs Quicktime?

Ok, so I have noticed this before but I am now working on a project in which this is a really big problem.
See, here is a screenshot from the video after export and then opened in Final Cut Pro:
    http://www.nathankboyd.com/Apple-Support/Final%20Cut%20Pro.jpg
And here is the same thing when opened with Quicktime 7.2.0:

Why is this, and can I fix it?
My current project is not being put on DVD, so when it is viewed on a computer, it needs to look good. It also seems that anything that is quicktime based has the same color problems, which is not too surprising, ie: Keynote.
    Please help!

I have the same problem. The same movie look brighter in Quicktime than in Final Cut.
It's happen with H.264 and DV files. No problem with Pixlet files.

  • Why the new Android permissions requirements for AIR 4.0.0.139?

When starting to update my AIR app to 4.0.0.139 on my Android devices through the Google Play store I found a number of new permission requirements.
    They are:
    New: Approximate location
    New: Receive data from Internet
    New: Prevent tablet from sleeping
New: Find accounts on the device
So does this mean that flash apps not using a captive runtime will no longer have to directly request these permissions from the user because the AIR libraries have already acquired them? This could be misleading to the user who installs an AIR app that will have far greater permissions that what they thought they were approving.
My big question is why are these permission needed? As a developer I submit the Android permissions I need for my app into the application descriptor file. So why does AIR itself need all these extra permissions?
As a consumer i've started finding too many apps that want access to run at startup, know my location, or contacts, or accounts, with no apparent reason for it. I've been uninstalling such apps or refusing to update them further. Does Adobe worry that other consumers may follow suit? Does the AIR libraries really need these permissions? Why?
    Thanks in advance.

This is typical of Adobe and how they have always been. They do whatever they want with absolutely no respect or consideration for the user. Not only did they add several new permissions, but they don't have any way to contact them about Air. The email listed on the Google Play page isn't valid, there's no contact info listed on the website, and if you try to submit a question to them Air isn't even an available option. It just goes to show how little they care about the users of their products. And then when someone like yourself goes to the trouble of asking them about it the only way possible, they ignore the question. Which says they don't care, they're hiding something, or both. In any case, I've always hated Adobe and steered clear of their products as much as possible because of this behavior, and I will continue to do so. I won't be letting this app have all these permissions without so much as an explanation why, so I'll be uninstalling it and just won't use any apps that require it, which to my understanding is mostly games, so I'll live. I just hope their disdainful attitude toward their users catches up to them and they crash and burn. We're on the right track with HTML5 moving away from Flash.

    Permissions repair complete
    Anyone know what's wrong?

There is no error. You could repair permissions continuously and these same notifications will show up.
Recent updates to iPhoto, Front Row, and an update for RAW compatibility have resulted in these permissions differences. Rather than replacing the old permissions with a new one, the system sees a symbolic "link" (the L you see in front of the permissions).
Nothing is wrong with your machine--we're all getting these notifications. Hopefully a system update will change the permissions for us in the future.
