10.6.2 Breaks iPhone tethering

Firstly: I have legit tethering on Rogers in Canada. No iPhone hacks here. I was using tethering just fine until yesterday but, after installing 10.6.2 last night, tethering no longer works.
When I attempt to tether, both my Mac's Network Preferences and the iPhone register that tethering has been successful as always. However, no connections can be made to the internet. I verified while tethered that the phone itself was able to load data over the 3G network, so it was not a network problem.
I tried tethering over Bluetooth and USB, both with the same failed result. Anyone else having this problem or have a solution?

I fixed it, had to delete the Bluetooth PAN network, the iphone profile on the Mac and the Mac profile on the iPhone, re-pair, then manually create the Bluetooth PAN network. Have no idea why this worked, but, interestingly, it did not ask me what I wanted to use the phone for anymore under 10.6.2, I recall last time it asked if I want to set the phone up as a network device.

Although not illegal, Apple discourages a user from modifying the iPhone OS in any manner, including "jailbreaking".  Apple feels so strongly about this that discussing methods to assist a user trying to either jailbreak or "unjailbreak" an iPhone are prohibited.

  • Missing TCP/IP settings for iPhone tethering (Bluetooth and USB)

Is it just me or Apple has completely disabled the TCP/IP settings for BT and USB connections for iPhone tethering (and possibly any other mobile devices)?
I can now only set the IP addresses and DNS server. No Proxies or WINS settings tabs.
I have also noticed that if you setup a USB tethering connection in Leopard and upgrade to Snow Leopard, the settings are still available, but NOT if you make a clean install of Snow Leopard and create a new iPhone USB tethering connection.
I always use a SOCKS5 when I'm using my tethering connection for security and better/faster connection with my manual proxy server setup. I find the new "options" in SL very limited, not only for my usage.

I got this to work again (in fact, I'm tethered right now
Here are the steps I followed:
    1) Upgraded to iTunes 9
    2) Upgraded iPhone to OS 3.1
    3) Removed device from Bluetooth Devices list on my MBP
    4) Removed Bluetooth PAN from Network preferences
    5) Restarted iPhone and MBP
    6) Set-up iPhone as a Bluetooth Device on MBP
    7) Enabled tethering on iPhone
    8) Connected to iPhone network via the Bluetooth icon on my MBP menu bar
    9) Verified that the blue "Internet Tethering" bar was on the iPhone
    10) Manually added Bluetooth PAN to my MBP network preferences (connect show as yellow, "IP cannot be assigned" message)
    11) Opened the Advanced pane and clicked the "Renew DHCP Lease" button
    12) IP was assigned!
I'm not sure if the first two steps contributed to the solution or not, but these are the steps that worked for me.
    Good luck to you all...

  • 10.6.3 and iPhone tethering over Bluetooth

This issue probably won't be widely reported because there is no iPhone tethering in the US with AT&T, but since upgrading to 10.6.3, I'm finding tethering my 13" MacBook Pro to my iPhone over Bluetooth to be really unreliable. Each time I do it, I basically have to stop and start Bluetooth on my Mac, and sometimes put my phone in to Airplane mode and back to normal again before it will tether.
Any other Canadians or others having this issue?

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the iPhone forums.
    Regards.

It is a violation of the software license agreement, so it is a contract violation.
It is not a criminal offense.
It does render the warranty void.

  • Iphone Tethering Problem

I cant seem to get the iphone tethering option working. All the instructions i have read so far say to go to Settings>General>Network>Internet Tethering. This so called "Internet Tethering" menu does not seem to show up on my iphone 3G. I have downloaded the new 3.0 software. I also have read several people who had this same question, but have not seen a clear answer. Is the problem with AT&T, or with how my settings are set up?

It is currently hidden by the profile installed on US iphones, but it is included in the 3.0 firmware. You cannot unlock it without violating you terms of service agreement with ATT and we cannot give those directions here. Hopefully, ATT will make it available soon so we can legally tether.

  • IPhone tethering via USB not working

    Hi,
Since last week my iMac can't recognize my iPhone in Network Preferences, when I plug my iPhone in my macbook the problem is gone, so I tried to reset  Network Preferences in iMac and nothing changed I also tried coping Network Preferences from my macbook -since tethering is working fine there- and nothing changed.
So if anyone have any clue how to solve my problem I will be grateful.
    Thank you.

    Try This :
Copy /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext to a backup folder (Desktop) and delete the original
Re-download the latest version of iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/)
Install iTunes, this will update your "AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" file.
    Disconnect USB-connection to iPhone
    Re-connect iPhone via USB

  • Why did they break data tethering in 4.5 on the 8830 WE?

    Hi All,
Just wondering - why did the BB gods decide that tethering needed to be broken in v 4.5 of the device software?   Was it far too convenient to have a 2-3 year old phone that worked, and give us the free OS update?
I've tried every version of 4.5 - tethering is broken on all of them.  Error "Remote Computer not responding".  Looking at it on a port monitor - the device sends back a "NO CARRIER" right after it dials #777 ("ATDT#777").  The same phone and same PC works swimmingly when used the phone in 4.2.2.
So what's the deal?  I can't imagine how it could be a carrier issue.

Sorry dude, I know for a fact it works. RIM (or no one else) has removed tethering from OS 4.5 for ANY devices, including the 8830.
The fact that you don't have it working, and your carrier is less than stellar at customer service and quite frankly is lying to you, doesn't mean it is 'broken'.
If it were 'broken', you would hear a loud cry across the land. The 8830 is still one of the premier corporate devices on the market (being replaced by the Tour now). If users on OS 4.5 couldn't tether, more than just you and MTS would know about it.

Are you asking for help on this, or just here to rant? It appears the latter, since you haven't ventured into the former.

  • Mac can't connect to Internet, no IP, no DNS even with iPhone tethering

My Mac Mini Server with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server doesn't connect to the Internet.
It can connect to the router either via Ethernet or Airport, but it can not get an IP address -- it always assigns itself a random IP address which is not in the correct range for the router.
All other devices, including PC, iPhone and iPad can work correctly with the router.
When I manually typed in the router's IP in Safari, 192.168.0.1, I can see the router admin page. But typing in any external IP nothing shows up.
Thinking it might be the router's problem, I used iPhone 4S' tethering -- tried wifi, USB, Bluetooth tethering and the Mac Mini still doesn't have any Internet connection.
I changed the DNS in the Network preferences, trying Google's public DNS 8.8.8.8, my ISP's DNS, and empty DNS. No luck.
What steps should I take to diagnose this problem further? Coming from a Windows background I'm not sure which tools are available to solve this problem...

The answer does not vary.  (See details below for why this is the case.)
Check your local DNS on the server; more likely than not, there's either an IP routing error around the gateway setting, or there's a problem with the local DNS set-up (if you're using DNS to reference the remote systems.)
Launch Terminal.app (from the Applications > Utilities folder) and issue the command
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
And see whether that produces some output and indicates DNS is valid and no changes are needed, or (as I'd suspect) that there are DNS errors here and that DNS or host-level changes are needed.  You'll need to specify an administrative password for the sudo command.
Also check the IP gateway setting in the server.
And (again) you need to use a static IP address for this box, within the same subnet you are using on your network.  This address should be outside of the DHCP address pool(s) in use on your network.
    ---- more details ----
Irrespective of your usage, this box is not a desktop (client) machine.  It's a server.
Server requirements do differ from clients.
Servers expect (at least for themselves) DNS services, and require a static IP address.
Servers also support more than one user, which means that server outages can effect more than one user.  This detail can then lead to differences from how client boxes are typically managed.  Server administrators tend to make fewer changes to and to install and reconfigure a server, and can variously make more and can make more specialized backups, than would be the case with a client box.
To use this Mac Mini Server as a client box, it's possible (per other discussions posted here in the forums) to load OS X Client onto most (all?) Mac Mini Server boxes.  Caveat: I've not tried this, and I don't know off-hand if this is officially supported by Apple.
My general preference involves getting DNS services going on the local network, and to use the server for what it provides.  Having DNS services on the local network can provide value, as do various other capabilities provided by OS X Server.  And to treat the box like a server, with static IP and proper DNS services and related.  My preference is to use a server as, well, a server, and to serve various protocols to the local clients.  Because of this, servers are useful, but they're also inherently somewhat more involved to configure than are clients.

  • IPhone Tethering after upgrade doesn't work

My Iphone 4 has been successfully tethering via my ATT Hotspot to various phones and devices for at least a year.  Recently, I upgraded my Iphone and Ipad to iOS6, and now I can no longer tether my Ipad.  I've tried with four different Ipads and none can tether to my Iphone.  They show two continually moving circles by "Choose a Network" and the network name.   The Ipad does show the chain symbol is the upper left along with the wifi strength signal, so it appears the Ipad has identified my phone's hotspot, but just can't make or hold the connection.  HELP!!!

Does this occur with any wi-fi network or just with your wi-fi network?
Did you restore the iPhone from the iPhone's backup, or as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup?
If the former, you placed the iPhone right back where it was. If the latter, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

  • Can I share wifi connection through iPhone tethering (instead of 3G)?

    Hi,
    when overseas, I don't have tethering (I have a US-only plan).
However, I am able to join wifi hotspots with a global login, plus my work based encrypted network. I cannot get my iPad or Macbook onto those networks directly.
Can I join a wifi network with my iPhone, then have other devices tether to that wifi internet connection?
    Thanks!
    edited for formatting.

    No.
Tethering is for sharing the iPhone's internet connection via the iPhone's cellular network only with a computer or device.

  • How can I REMOVE the iPhone Tethering Hack completely ?!

    <Edited by Host>
How can I completely REMOVE the tethering hack from my iPhone, and from iTunes/iMac ???
_*I WANT TO REMOVE IT, COMPLETELY*_
    • Do I have to reinstall OSX in order to regain my default settings in iTunes, and Terminal?
    • Since i had to put this (defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE) inside the terminal for the hack, can i just edit that?
+Somebody Please help. This hack is making my phone unstable, and unreliable.+

    Lots of misinformation floating around:
    1. You don't need to do anything to iTunes. You changed a property value that allowed iTunes to let you see the IPCC file and install it.
You can leave this, it is not hurting anything, just don't go looking to install IPCC files (iPhone Cell carrier file).
    2. This is not making your iPhone unstable. AT&T will release this same file when they allow tethering.
    3. If you want to get rid of it, you have 2 choices install an official AT&T carrier file (there is not one released for 3.0 yet), Or just restore your iPhone with Official 3.0 software but don't restore the backup. Set it up as new.
If your phone is unstable, you may have done other things - you don't say, so just set up as new.

  • IPhone tethering and Mail app

I'm not sure where this problem in originating so am posting to 3 forums - my apologies to those on all 3!
During the past week, my iPhone, which is my only internet connection, has been draining its battery - over and over again. The only unusual activity I've seen has been in Mail, where the spinning "getting mail" icon appears constantly. I've shut down all my browsers, chats, etc. except for Mail. I've of course shut down Mail periodically to recharge the phone. The phone is fine - it recharges quickly as long as Mail is not open. I've decreased how often Mail checks for new messages (from the "every 1 minute" which it's been set on for months).
The final straw was getting a note from Rogers that I've exceeded my 6 GB data total for the month - which started on the 12th. I'm now at 8.4 GBs and have NOT - absolutely NOT - downloaded anywhere near that amount of data. The phone reached 6 GB only slightly over 24 hours ago, so something is obviously drastically wrong.
Since I can't tell if the problem is with the phone, Mail itself or with MobileMe, which is where all my accounts but one reside (forwarded from the actual accounts) I'm posting this to all three in the hopes that someone can help me. I'm going broke!! The extra charges are already $100 and rising and I still have over 2 weeks to go before the time resets!

So do the following: For Safari, delete ALL pages but a blank page, then go into Settings>Safari>Clear History>Clear Cookies>Clear Cache. Then, Settings>Notifications, make sure it is set to "OFF". For your Mail Apps, turn off push & make sure fetch is set to "Manually".
My problem with excess data is for the tethering data, not the data on the phone itself but the above is good to know, and I'll do both. Thanks!
Once done, Reset your phone, you won't lose any data or settings, but this will kill anything that might be running in the background:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release. Ignore the slide to power off.
Interesting. I've never ignored the power off slide and didn't know you could. I'll have to give it a try. Does it result in something different that when you use the slide?
I have reset the phone a few times since this issue arose, by the way but never by ignoring the slide. According to Rogers (my service provider) Tech Support the issue is with my computer, not my phone, so I'm going to try your initial suggestions on my laptop as well. Where I can, obviously, since the laptop doesn't have push.
    Thanks for the advice!
