10.6.2 bricked my alu Macbook

Hi,
a few weeks ago while updating to 10.6.2 through system update, i got a message saying there was an error during install and that the process could not be completed. After the computer rebooted It would no longer go further than to the spinning wheel and grey apple logo. I could not hear any activity from the hard drive. I tried rebooting a few more times and ended up leaving the computer on trying to boot for a few hours. After that didn´t work i booted to the snow leopard dvd and tried to reinstall. It would not let me.
A bit puzzled, i let the machine be for a while. Later i booted to the dvd again and used the Terminal to copy my home folder to another drive. I had to go away for a while, but now i am home again. The problem have become worse. Now it won´t boot to DVD and shuts itself off after trying to boot for a while. Is there an easy fix to this or should to send it in for service?

Hi Hans,
You can try unplugging the HD's SATA cable and trying to boot from the DVD drive. I realize that requires a little extra effort but it might be worth trying. I've seen situations where a failed or failing HD can cause havoc with the boot process after POST.
Otherwise, yes, you're looking at sending it in for service. Probably going to end up there anyway but that's a relatively quick troubleshooting step and away to possibly identify the problem.

  • Worth protecting alu macbook with invisible shield?

    hi
i was wondering is it easy to scratch the new alu macbook becasue i have had mine for three days now and so far so good. would like to hear your views?

    dood,
I have to say I already scratched that flimsy bottom panel where the battery and HD are... That is part of the reason why I quickly ordered a shield...
Not to be a party crasher here, but aluminum is so easy to scratch, too bad eh, it's so pretty, bare silver like that... At least the shield won't hide the sexiness!
I also called Apple, asked for the panel as a spare part and was willing to pay for it, thinking it would cost a fortune... Much to my surprise, the part is... 8 $ ! plus shipping, which is ironically 11 $ (more than the part ironic isn't it).
Last comment: I have rarely had such great customer support, first time I call Apple, and I'm very impressed with the gentleman who was patient and went through the whole paperwork thing.

  • No SpeedStep / CPU scaling in XP on new Alu Macbook

Installed XP Home SP2 via Bootcamp on my Late 2008 Macbook (2.0 ghz)
Was surprised to see the battery life go down by half under XP compared to Leopard
A quick check revealed that the CPU is running at full throttle (1.99 ghz even with 0% CPU utilization)
Why should this be the case.
I have the power options set to max battery and the CPU should be scaling itself down to lower clocks when not loaded
Can someone else with a late 08 MB also please check this and let me know

Hi Hatter, further to our other thread, the fundamental problem here is that Apple hardware uses EFI, not BIOS. There are many Windows apps for controlling CPU and GPU fan speeds, but they all rely on genuine BIOS hooks to control the physical hardware. Boot Camp provides a pseudo BIOS layer (over EFI) to allow install of Windows, but it does not go the extent of supporting CPU fan control, so Windows users are dependent on waiting for Apple to provide CPU fan control functionality in Boot Camp.
With regard to the NVidia 9400M GPU in particular, this is the only GPU/chipset range that NVidia does not provide consumer support for in their recent public driver release. Since Apple is the OEM that designed the implementation of 9400M on the Apple notebooks, only Apple can create drivers for them. So again, Windows users are dependent on waiting for Apple to provide GPU fan control funcionality in their Windows graphics driver under Boot Camp.

  • Alu Macbook GFX troubles

Bought my new Macbook 2.0Ghz only couple of weeks ago, and I've already run into several of the problems.
    The touchpad isn't always responding
Sometimes it wont wake up from standby
The case doesn't fit very well. Can move it a tiny bit
But worst of all.. The GFX. The last couple of days the GFX has been acting a little weird. When playing games it all of a sudden "speed up" makes sort of the same sound as when it's loading a DVD, only it is followed by a very laud annoying beep noise, which keeps on going, until i either shut down the computer og put it on standby. Can happen after 30 mins of gaming or after 5 hours. Sounds just like when i back in my "PC days" OC'd my gfx too much for it to handle :P
Anyone got a solution to this?

Sounds like a problem for Apple to deal with.

  • Macbook Alu is a not supported bluetooth device fo...

I tried everything possible to synchronize my Nokia E50 with iSync on a MacBook (the aluminium unibody one), but this operation is impossible because my phone not support MacBook as a bluetooth device. I've never had this problem with the previuous MacBook model (the policarbonate one). I have just update both device with the last software version or firmware, but there's nothing to do.
Anyone can help me please? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with the new alu Macbook and my Nokia E65. In OSX there's no communication possible between the Macbook and the E65... I've installed (with Bootcamp) Vista on the same Macbook and then there's no problem at all. So the problem is related to software problems in OSX...

  • Macbook PRO can't find ANY Wifi network - only at home

Hi, i have a very strange problem with my *Macbook Pro*. I have 3 apple computers at home and one pc. On all machines Wifi works fine, except my new alu Macbook Pro. Important note is, when im with my macbook on other place, office, caffe, *Wifi works fine. But when im at home, this macbook simply can't find ANY network, it's blind.* Interesting thing is, all other computers are several years old and WiFi works fine on them. My friend also bought a brand new macbook pro, and this machine also couldn't fine any network at my home, or in other case when it found networks, it couldn't connect and recieve error message "Connection timed out". I noticed there is new Wifi network in our range, is it possible that this network can cause "blindness" on new macbooks?

*I have to say, I'm really glad you are trying to help guys.*
Well, router is almost on default settings, SSID is brodcasted and i'm not filtering MAC adresses. I tried changed channels, diffrent types of security or no security, no luck.
Guys, maybe i wrote it wrong, but this MacBook can't see ANY network. Around me there are 4-6 other networks which I'm able to see from other machines. So *problem is, this Macbook can't seen ANY network - not just mine.* BUT when i'm with this Macbook in office for example, or any other location, Wifi works....
And one more important thing, this happened suddenly. I was able few months ago to find any WiFi around me with this Macbook. No changes to router, no changes to mac. Problem is somwhere in the middle...try to focus on this: why i'm not able to see any of those cca 6 networks around me. I really think it has to do something with distorted signal and Wifi card used in new macbooks. It's really sick, because all other machines works perfectly (MB 07, MBP 06, PC, iPhone 3g)
I found a log on the router, and it's happening all the time:

  • 17" MacBook Pro or iMac

So I have a 17" HP dv8000t that's running WinXP. I've had since since July 2006 and it's been fine, but I'm starting to think I may want to update it in the near future. This is been my primary machine with all my files on it. It's running a Core Duo processor @ 2.0GHz with 1GB of RAM and a 100GB hard drive.
What I'm wondering is whether or not I should get another desktop replacement (the MBP) or go for an iMac. I'm thinking the biggest deciding factor will be price since they both have comparable specs. Also, there are a handful of Windows apps that I use semi-regularly. Is it worth it to buy something like Parallels to run that stuff or use Boot Camp?
I've used Macs before off and on for school, but I've been primarily a Windows user. I got the 2.4GHz aluminum MacBook in October (for school only) as my first Mac and I love it. This is what's gotten me into thinking about the future with my main machine. I'm just looking for feedback/advice on what's the best option.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
    Steven

The only really relevant question when deciding on iMac or MBP is whether or not you need the portability. If you do, then the MB or MBP are really your only options. If the portability is not a big deal, then the iMac offers unquestionably more power for your dollar. Personally, if I had an Alu Macbook and was considering a second machine, I'd go with the iMac. But that's just me! It is your decision.

  • 2.4Ghz Macbook's hdd

I read that the 2.4GHz hdd has a sudden motion sensor and it does show at the profile under system preference.
What does this function actually do?? Does the white macbook have this function also??

    Thanks Kappy...
I think the concrete conclusion would be to access the System Profiler/Hardware to check if its there.
Might be considering getting a white macbook for my wife as her laptop is giving problems. And she's trying to hog my macbook so much that I dun even hv much time alone with it!! =P
So far the difference I can find between alu macbook and white macbook, besides the hardware part, are the trackpad is different. There isnt 3 and 4 fingers function on the white macbook.
Anything else different? Software and OSX are the same right?

  • MACBOOK PRO - 15" 08 SCREEN CALIBRATION WITH SPYDER 3 ELLITE

    Hi
I bought a Macbook Pro prior to the new released model. As a graphic designer i am doing my nutt trying to calibrate the screen to an acceptable level. The lowest % of black visable on screen is 30% which is useless abnd highest is 70%.
The internal calibration tool is useless.. so i hoped purchasing a Spyder 3 Ellite would solve my problems...the results are still poor I have tried adjusting the backlight to factory settings which i believe is 50% brightness. Also changing the gamma and white point...still i am at a loss... has anyone got some experience with using the Spyder 3 Ellite and the MBP '08 model??? please help.

I tried calibrating the new 15" macbook pro with the spyder3 using variety of settings; I can get decent neutrals but the colors always seem a bit off to me, especially deep blues which seem to shift towards purple. I use it with a 30" ACD and I could get my previous alu macbook pro to match the 30" pretty closely, but the new macbook pro screen is harder to calibrate it seems.
The Spyder 3 might have issues with the new glossy screens.
Some people had posted icc profiles here before, maybe try one of those?

  • Vista x64 and new Macbook..

    hi,
i installed Vista x64 on my new ALU Macbook. I also manually installed all x64 drivers from the mac cd. everything fine so far...
i just got the problem that i cant "tab" and rightclick on the trackpad .. only move mousepointer und mechanical leftclick ..
    are there any solutions yet?
    (need x64 vista because 4gb ram ...)

    Hey
Did you install only the drivers or the WHOLE bootcamp? Coz when you install bootcamp you can just double click the icon near the clock (sry I don't know exactly how it's called in English). There is a tab 'Trackpad' and you can change the properties (e.g. to finger right click, moving windows around, touch to do a left click....)

  • Using a MacBook in Europe.

What do I need if I want to use my MacBook in Europe?

Hi. The power brick on my MacBook indicates 100 to 240 volts and 50 or 60 hz so it should be universal. Only thing you'll need then is an adaptor that converts the plug ends to whatever socket you need to plug into. You can buy adaptors anywhere for cheap and I've seen kits that come with several standard European adaptors in a little zippered travel case. Have a look at your power brick and see if it indicates the same voltage ranges. Cheers!

  • Multi-Touch Early 2008 Macbook

So i know that the "official" word from apple is that this isnt possible because it needs hardware, but just incase you all have figured something out. Would it be possible for me to enable three or four finger gestures on my black macbook, it was made in early 2008. the reason i'm wondering is that i found the .kext multitouch from one of the alu macbooks on the interenet and was wondering what the consequences would be if i replaced the one on my computer? the site i found it for was giving instructions for enabling four fingers on one of the already multi-touch macbook pros. they said to replace it and repair permissions and then reboot, what could happen if i did this to my macbook?I know that the trackpad can recognize at least three because it is posible under linux with the correct drivers, so can it work?

There's a third-party utility called MultiClutch - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - that may work with your model, but you cannot use the trackpad drivers from another Mac model to implement features unsupported by the trackpad in your computer.

  • New MacBook USB Question

    Hi Guys,
I'm building a new portable studio.
    I'm used to firewire gear.
I want to get a new MacBook (not Pro)
and use a Tascam US 1641 with a Presonus D8 to have 16 ins.
Since the new MacBook's don't have Firewire, I will need an external USB 2.0 HD for recording.
    My question is this.
Can I record 16 tracks in at 24 bit 48 to the USB external Drive?
Tascam plugged into one port, HD plugged into another.
What is the track count for a USB 2.0 7200 RPM drive?
    What limitations can I expect?
    Thanks so much.

    Ok,
So after running some tests myself, both of you guys were right.
The USB bus can't handle both the External HD and the Tascam.
    Bummer.
However, what about the MacBook internal drive?
If I were to replace it with a 7200RPM could it handle 60 tracks at 24/48?
You will have to find someone with personal experience to answer that one. A Laptops bus system isn't as robust as a desktop and that's a lot of tracks. The other problem is heat, a faster drive runs hotter, the new Macbooks are small and can get pretty warm from just the nvidea graphics processor.
Have you been over to the Alu Macbook forum?
Also, the new MacBooks have the GeForce 9400M in them.
Do you think that Snow Leopard will take advantage of that card and help with > running Logic?
    Very doubtful.
Not trying to be negative here but I think you will have a difficult time trying to get what you need (reliably) from one of the new Macbooks.

  • New To Macbook Pro

Hi, hopefully I am on the right forum. I am a new mac user. I just bought Macbook Pro 13", 2.4 GHz, 4GB at my apple store. Running battery calibration here, is it safe to restart the computer after a software update? I am starting college in 2 weeks for summer class for culinary arts, art tech, art literature, computer science (w/ adobe photoshop cs4). Will the 13" Macbook Pro handle it well?
I've read several online forums, blogs about how the new alu macbook pros have connection issues with the internet? How do we prevent that from happening? I haven't noticed anything. I'm running wireless on it at the moment. Plus, what's a great ideal application for a college student? Or what do you guys all use for your macbook pros?

Welcome CCY853 to the forums, and to your new Mac experience.
"is it safe to restart the computer after a software update?"
    Absolutely, not an issue.
"Will the 13" Macbook Pro handle it well?"
    You are in good hands.
    "connection issues?"
I believe this has been resolved in the 10.6.3 update. Especially if it is currently not an issue for you.
    "software?"
    Extremely subjective here.
    Have fun!

  • Black Macbook connection problem

    Hello
We have 4 Apple computers in our household. We're connecting to the internet using an airport express. Three out of four computers (G4 Titanium Powerbook, late 2008 MacBook Pro, late 2008 Alu Macbook) can connect to this AE very quickly and the speed is fine. One computer (black Macbook 2.16 Core2Duo) has problems. When starting up or waking up from sleep it takes about a minute to find the AE, and then when finally connected it's very slow. I tried to set up the AE from this computer and interstingly, then all other computers can not find the network at all.
    Anyone any ideas ?

I had a very similar problem with a PowerBook G4 that I inherited. The final resolution was to do a complete flatten and reload of OS X, but there are a few steps you can try first that are a bit less drastic:
Try the following, and check to see if the problem disappears after each step ...
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
o Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
o Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
o Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
o Restart, or log out then back in.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
o Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
o Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Run the Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions.
    3. Turn off the Mac OS X Firewall
    o System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
    o Click the "Stop" button.
    4. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    o Go to /Library/Preferences
o Move the SystemConfiguration folder and com.apple.networkConfig.plist file to the desktop.
o Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder & .plist file back to it's original location.)
    5. Create a New User Account
    o System Preferences > Accounts
o Click "+" to add a new account
o Log off, then log back on with the new user account.
o Try connecting with the AirPort.
