10.6.2 Killed my MacBook Pro

I did the upgrade to 10.6.2 and now my MacBook Pro won't even boot up. I don't know what happened. I got the auto update, it downloaded and restarted my computer but it never cam back. I need my computer... Badly! Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what did you do to fic the problem. I can't even boot from the original OS cds... Please help!

Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.
Good luck in any case.

  • I killed a MacBook Pro. Shutdown with flash in drive and now it won't start at all.

I may have killed my MacBook Pro OS X by accidentally restarting  with  a Flash Drive it it and now it won't start at all.  Any ideas?

So it is powering on. You did not state that before. In that case:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Also see this if above doesn't work:
    Install OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the original version of OS X that came on the machine.

  • Final cut pro x is killing my macbook pro!

Final cut pro x running on my macbook pro results in constant running of fans at full pace. Jerkiness in playback on fcpx. Entire computer is jerky through other programs like safari too. It seems fcpx background operations are absorbing the entire power of the co puter. Any thoughts/suggestions? Ps it runs fcp 7 fine.

With your MacBook Pro, did you get a unit with the dual video processor? A while ago Apple started putting in two different video cards. One was for the mundane everyday stuff and the goal was to save power. On my MBP I have a Nvidia GeForce 9400M, I also have an Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT which is much more robust for graphics power. The VRAM on the 9400 was only 256, with the 9600M GT it was 512. The bigger the GPU and the fast the GPU, the faster the MBP especially with FCP.
You can select the faster processor by going to system preferences and choose higher performance. It will require you to log out and log back in to use the different GPU. Also turn your harddrive to never sleep when you do this and you will see some improvement in speed and lag.
Another thing is to set up your projects on a fast external drive. If you try to keep source files and project files on the MBP drive you are begging for slowness.
    Good luck!

  • Final cut pro free trail kills my MacBook pro!

I have the late 2008 MacBook Pro will all the requirements this program requires, but it drains my memory down like 2 mb sometimes. Nothing I've read on the Internet has helped so far. Please tell me there is a fix cuz at this point I'm giving up. I add a title or drag and drop anything without delays and the playback is crazy slow. I've imported just one 20 min video from iMovie that is mostly still pics!  PLEASE HELP!!!

  • My ipad kills my macbook pro

    I have an early 2009 17-inch MacBook Pro. And i have a new iPad2.
When the two are on my desk next to eachother something happens.
If the ipad gets too close to my laptop, the laptop dies; the internet goes out, the screen goes to sleep, itunes stops, etc.
It's the magnetic side of the ipad slid up to the drive side of the macbook pro.
I found a case of this happening to someone else too...
    http://youtu.be/EewT4RJ8iHM

I think there is a magnetic sensor in the MacBook that tells the computer when the lid is closed.  You'll notice when you close the lid, the lid sorta "snaps" closed.  I'm wondering if the magnets in the iPad 2 are setting off the sensors in the MacBook pro making it think it's closed when it's really not.  That would certinaly explain why the screen, internet and itunes shut off.

  • Firmware Killed my macbook pro

I turned on my computer and it said i had some automatic updates so i installed all of them when it restarted it said i still needed to do the firmware update (dont know which one) and so i had done one before so i just did it and when it finished it said it didnt take and needed to do it again then compleatly crashed my computer. so i found my system restore disks and put one in but realized the keybord didnt work and so it wouldnt spit out the old cd. No clue what to do.

The automatic updates would not be Firmware, those are only listed on the 'downloads' section of the Apple site and will not happen automatically. So, it's likely the updates were:
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update (Intel)
    iPhoto 6.0.6
    iTunes 7.1.1 for Mac
Does that look right from memory or where there other items like Airport or Security update listed?
    Here's what to try next:
    a) Turn on the MacBook Pro holding down [option] and see what it lists as available volumes
    b) Turn on the MacBook Pro holding down apple/option/p/r keys and wait for three chimes before releasing.
    c) Turn on the MacBook Pro holding down the TrackPad mouse button and see if it ejects the DVD and Boots (b) might also have ejected the disc before you get to this point.
If/when it then boots OK run Disc Utility and 'Repair Permissions' right away

  • Update to Yosemite killed my MacBook Pro HELP!!!

I updated my MacBook Pro to Yosemite and it has dragged it down incredibly. Every time I click, open, close, type, delete, scroll and move it takes about 15 seconds to process. May not sound to long but it adds up and when it happens for everything I am doing its impossible to get anything done, feels like I have dial up again. I am rather computer illiterate so I have no idea what to do, and am afraid of accidentally destroying my Mac. Only thing I have managed to do was run a diagnostic with Etrecheck. Please HELP!!
    Problem description:
i updated to Yosemite and my Mac has slowed down significantly, almost unusable, every action takes what feels like 20 seconds to respond

  • Mavericks seems to have killed my MacBook Pro (mid 1010)

My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) had been working normally. I just installed mavericks. Now the computer won't start. After the apple icon shows up, part of the screen suddenly becomes black and about 20 lines of code appear. The computer then restarts, and a window appears stating that "The computer has restarted because of a problem" with no further information. Then the cycle continues, with the operating system never starting up.
Obviously I wish I had never installed mavericks. Does anyone know how I might get machine running normally again?

I understand your reasoning;however, this is what Apple has apparently decided, so there isn't anything we can do about it. When Lion first was introduced, you were able to download the installer and then save a copy of it somewhere. This is no longer possible now with the new Macs/new OS - when you invoke recovery and download the OS, there is no way to save that installer as the download/install sequence is one process now and there is no way to save the installer as it deletes itself after the install.
Aside from that issue, new Macs have not been able to use the app store or software update version on thei Macs because of their special builds until one or two updates later when the updates "caught up" with the new Mac's OS build version.
As you can see here, a Mac might have come with different OS versions as well as different builds of the same version:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
Personally, I've decided to keep a "fresh install" bootable clone as an emergency measure (which I do not update purposely so it remains "factory fresh") in addition to my regular clones which are updated regularly. That eliminates the need for a download in order to reinstall.

  • 10.6.5 killed my MacBook Pro 13"

    Hey folks,
yesterday I had a perfectly working 10.6.4 installed. After the upgrade to 10.6.5 it kernel panicked seconds after logging in. I reinstalled OS X on brand new HDD. It worked very well. Then I started Software Update. Now I get a KP immediately after pressing the power button.
The error messages are different every time. From page to "cannot achieve linked state". Sometimes I get the IOPlatformExpert error saying that my machine "ACPI" is not supported. I know for a fact that it should say "MacBookPro5,1" (don't know the exact number). This is not a Hackintosh!
Is something wrong with my EFI. It doesn't know what kind of computer it is? On the other hand, the OS X from the cd still works perfectly.
    Any ideas?
    Clemens

‘I reinstalled OS X on brand new HDD. It worked very well.’
It’s hard to provide much help without knowing what resources you have or don’t have, to address the problem.
Using the start-up disk and running the disk utility services may well be all you can do. Start with ‘Repair Permissions’ and attempt to restart from the HD. ‘Repair Disk’ is the next option followed by reinstalling the ‘system files’.
If any of these stepwise routines resolves the startup issue, then you may still need additional repairs. I recommend that you purchase a small external hard drive and backup your host drive.
Carbon Copy Cloner and/or SuperDuper! are semi-free utilities that are easy to use in order to backup your drive. Following that, you can download 'Onyx' and run the default maintenance routines, which will often resolve other latent defects in the system. Other very useful utilities are ‘Disk Warrior’ and 'Tech Tool Pro' albeit the costs. Ok, there are several others but these are what I use with ‘Onyx’ being the most useful.
If nobody has mentioned it before, hard drives and system files will fail sooner or later. This is especially true with portable computers. As I tell my son, you can drive a car for 25+k without changing the oil, but it certainly isn’t a good idea.

  • Lion has killed my MacBook Pro

A terrible new operating system debut. Hours to download and a buggy install. Crashed during reboot and laptop reboots to a recovery screen and wont progress further. I now have bricked £1000 laptop that I cant use. Every day Apple you charge your customers more and give them less.

Hi, I have been an Apple user for just over a year now, prior to that I remember well, the issues with Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, Vista, XP and the latest Windows Saviour (NOT) Windows 7. Forgive me if the order is not quite correct!!
With Mac I have only used   OS X "SL"  and have had few problems with it, apart from the windows equivalent of the dreaded blue screen which was down to a hard drive issue. Now it appears Apple are taking a leaf out of the Windows book and releasing software for the general user/buyer to quality check, fault find, refine, report and most important from an Apple point of view is PAY FOR.
Why do all of the software writers feel the need to change thing just for the **** of it, when what they are changing is not broken in the first place, could it be to justify their salaries I wonder?
The issues purchasers of Lion are having is enough for many to ask the question WHY? Is PC a better option, what about the new Google operating system?
I am sure that a lot of prospective buyers of Lion will be like me and not bothering with it, until Apple drop support for SL.
Come on Apple sort out the problems with your software and its compatibility issues !!

  • Yosemite killed my Macbook Pro

Oh my god... I am so slow now... why, why, why did I upgrade? Mid 2010 8G memory.  I couldn't be more bummed out.  Apple has turned my Mac into a PC!  I am sick of watching the rainbow icon spin and spin and spin....zzZZZzzzZZzzZzzzz help!

  • Will this operating system kill my 2008 MacBook Pro?

I am working with the last operating system and it seems to have slowed this computer down considerably. Will this new Yosemite OS kill my MacBook Pro from 2008? I do not want to download anything that is going to slow this machine down anymore. It's already lethargic enough as it's configured now.

Time to do some serious house cleaning.
Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.  There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.

You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • Plugging official DVI to Video adaptor to Macbook Pro 3,1 recently updated to Mavericks killed my Macbook's SMC

So it happens that since Lion and now, of course, Mavericks, the DVI to Video/S-Video support is not only unsupported, but crashes your 2008 Macbook Pro (MacbookPro3,1, 15 inch) if you plug the official adaptor in. The screen went with artifacts and the computer needed a hard reset.
What happened after that is that the computer wouldn't start. Of course I immediately did SMC and PRAM resets without results. No leds, no start chime, nothing. Only method found was to bypass the SMC (which is done via holding de power button with battery/power cord unplugged, then plugging power cord still holding it, releasing, and pressing it again). Everything is then ok except, of course, everything controlled by the SMC (no battery, leds, fans at full speed). Did Apple's Hardware Check, full test, no errors found. Reflashed manually the SMC via an EFI Shell, as found on the internet: the SMC is in "U" mode and can't be correctly reflashed. After that, I unmounted the logic board looking for any kind of corruption; found nothing.
In resume, did everything I could for a week. The last thing I found out is that plugging the adaptor itself, without connecting to any external device (no TV), still crashes the screen with artifacts. I beleive this has to do with the adaptor having inside some chips, since it's function is not to rewire cables, but to convert one signal to another. What happens after that and a hard-reset again, and after that hard reset the now installed rEFIt screen doesn't appear, so I believe that, effectively, connecting the adaptor affects your computer's boot system somehow.
I know Apple doesn't support computers old as these anymore, and I don't even care they quit the Video-out support with their new free OS, but if by doing that you enable your own official 20-30€ adaptor to kill an otherwise fully functional Macbook, that's foul play.
Any advice will be greatly received. Thanks for reading.

Forgot to mention that the DVI adaptor works ok if plugged to a DVI monitor, so it's not a physical problem from the DVI output plug.

  • Will baby oil kill macbook pro? It is still working and I do not know if I should do anything orr just pray?

In a bedroom accident, the wife and I spilled baby oil into my MacBook Pro. (let the jokes begin)
Amazingly, it still works fine. I know that is a scented mineral oil and that it is not too conductive.
I took it to our local apple dealer, who said it only has a month to live. While I never thought it would even start, I am now wondering if he was right.
Would you please address the folowiing questions
    1. Should I do anything? if so, what?
    2. Should I expect it to continue to live?
    3. Is there any REAL danger other than killing the computer?
I have already backed up data, and am draining tthe oil to the best of myy ability.

Surprisingly enough, a popular project is for people to make systems completely submerged in mineral oil.  It is a very poor conductor:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=mineral+oil+computer&sugexp=chrome,mod=9&sourceid =chrome&ie=UTF-8
The problem is that those systems are designed to remain in the oil.  Once you get something like oil on a system that's used in a more traditional sense, you can expect dust and other contaminants to build up quickly.  There's not really much you can do to prevent that.  Over time, that build up can result in cooling or other issues.  If it gets in fans or other moving parts, over time, build up can cause them to fail as well.
