10.6.2 Restart Fails

Things on my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro have been basically OK since the 10.6.2 update. However, I've noticed on the Mac Pro that restart no longer works. It will shut down the machine and then just sit there. After a few minutes I have to hold in the button and cold start it. Once started all seems to work pretty well.
I have seen one other oddity. I had the mouse pointed at the spotlight magnifying glass while it was searching for something and the machine just hung. Never seen that before. I was forced to be brutal and cold start with fingers crossed. All seems well but I'm not used to freezes since I left windows a few years back!
Anyone have any ideas about the restart problems?

Thanks for the replies. I ran the permissions repair but only saw some browser plugin's fixed up.
After that I restarted the Mac Pro. The machine shut down, I heard the "ta-da" music as if it were going to reboot and then nothing. So, I started booting my Macbook Pro laptop to log in here and get the SMC reset instructions and several minutes later the Mac Pro suddenly came alive again! I've read somewhere that this last system update sometimes caused a one time long blue screen. In my case it was a long "black" screen! After it reached the login screen I rebooted yet again and the time to login screen was much more normal. Apparently there is some self healing going on that just requires waiting about 5 minutes. We'll see if it holds up.

  • OWB 9.0.4 ability to restart failed ETL jobs ?

    Hi all,
Does OWB 9.0.4 provide the ability to restart failed ETL jobs ?
For example in a Module of 20 mappings, 15 mappings have completed with success. Mapping 16 fails and hence OWF exists with failure. In the event the problem is rectified can OWB restart at mapping 16 rather than from mapping 1.
    Regards
    Nick

    Nick,
At the moment there is no way to explicitly start from mapping 16, unless there are specific conditions that caused your mapping to fail.
For example, if you have enabled resumable statements on the database level and your mapping would run into a situation where these can be leveraged (e.g. you run out of tablespace) then you could resume the execution and the process flow would continue.
Also, if there is an external situation that causes your execution to fail (e.g. mapping does not exist) then you can use Workflow's restart capabilities to resume.
If however there is a data reason why a mapping fails, then you will have to manually intervene and resolve the process. If your mappings have been defined in such a way that only changed data is being captured (may be a good idea after all...) then you could just rerun the entire process flow. In other cases... I am afraid you'll have to go in manually to execute the individual mappings and fix the process flow as such.
    Mark.

  • MacPro3,1 Restart Fails along with freezes up during activity

My MacPro3,1 restart fails as well as freezes up during some processes like Finder.app. When it freezes up during with Finder.app and I do a Force Quit Relaunch it never relaunches it just quits and never returns. Clean install.

You have posted three different symptoms in three different posts. In isolation, they do not lead anywhere in particular.
But taken together, I think it is worth investigating graphics card failure.
    Several non-graphics-dependent features are discernible:
    • The Caps lock light on the keyboard is under software control. The software is not completely dead if the caps lock light is changeable.
    • Control-eject produces this familiar dialog box:
Any key other than R for Restart, S for Sleep, Esc for Cancel, or Return (to take the default and Shutdown) will produce a SysBeep sound IF the software is still running.
    > So, if the software is still running when your described problems occur, you can conclude that your Graphics card is the source of your not seeing it continue to work.

  • DB 7.8 Restart fails with SQL error -9407, unexpected error 3

then we tried to restart the database. Now it doesn't come up any more.
Is there another possibility instead of a recovery?
    Greetings
    Ulrich

Your problem description sounds very similar to the following error:
    PTS1237652:
    "Appearance:
Restart fails with file directory corruption:
31,Error linking entry to parent; file no 'xxx', parent file no 'yyy', file type 'IndexFile', error '11'
    Preconditions and circumstances:
During a recreate index operation the index was dropped and recreated manually.
    Workaround:
None. The system must be recovered to the time just before the index was recreated."
Please note that this is one of those issues that has only been fixed with 7.8.02. 7.8.02 is currently in customer testing, if anyone wants to join, just open a CSS message and test this version before we make it generally available for download.

  • Like to know how to restart failes patch

    Dear all
If any patch fail to apply patch due some reason's how to restart... From some web site i seen that there is option called adctrl is use for restart failed worker.. Now we assume like if the patch completed around 90 % and it taken around 2 hours for that.. Now the remaining 10% only wanna to execute which is taken only ten min to complete now what i wanna to do complete with out start the process from beginning...

    http://beginapps.blogspot.com/2008/04/how-to-apply-11i-patch-when-adpatch-is.html
The above link talks about 11i. It is the same for R12 except the location of restart files in R12 is in $APPL_TOP/admin/<SID>
Mean while i like to know the difference between adctrl and autopatch restart (i.e the purpose of $APPL_TOP/admin/<SID>/restart ).....Please read the documentation
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B34956_01/current/acrobat/r12adutil.pdf
    Breifly
Using adctrl you can control the workers, like quitting them, restarting them checking the status.
The purpose of restart directory is to store the last status of the workers and other information will be needed if patch needs to be restarted next time.
    Thanks

  • Snow Leopard - very slow restart / reboot and Boot Camp restart fail

    Hi
After Snow Leopard installation on my Macbook Pro I have a very slow restart. I logged this immediately after install and waited till 10.6.1 was issued and installed but still have the same problems. Hope some one can help.
For an normal restart or reboot I have the grey screen for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for about 2 mins 30 secs before loading desktop. This is longer than Leopard and clearly not what Snow Leopard is meant to be. I have installed on an iMac as well and can see the new normal fast boot.
I also have Windows on it's own partition and use in Boot Camp. I have used this successfully under Leopard.
When I restart from Windows using the Start button and restart, Windows shuts down and then the mac starts up but gets stuck indefinitely on the blue screen. I have waited up to 25 mins then forced a shut down.
However if I restart from Windows using the Boot Camp icon in the taskbar and choose the restart from MacOSX it shuts down windows and restarts the mac in record time!! about 25 secs grey screen and 25 secs blue screen. I can't get this in normal mac mode! - Bizarre.
I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, run Tech Tool, Onyx, reset PRAM, deleted startup items plists and removed startup items from System Preferences Account.
I have monitored the Console app for all the startup conditions noted above and will post below. In the logs of the normal mac reboot you can see something to do with Security Agent taking over 2 mins to load. Maybe that is a clue, but I don't understand these messages. Please note that the iStatsmenu app was installed after snow leopard and I had these slow startups before it's installation.
If anyone technical can understand what the **** is going on here I would really appreciate your feedback.
    Regards
    Eric

    Hi guys
Thanks for your contributions. I have made little progress on this issue since posting.
Just as added info, I did a re-install of Snow leopard from install DVD and upgrade again to 10.6.1 and no change to the startup behaviours. Same pattern as before, although the first restart was fast and probably how it is meant to be, then the slow ones reappeared.
I also had a thought that somehow it may be related to the nominated startup disk. There were posts on other boards about similar issues with Leopard where the hanging start was found to be related to the computer not knowing which startup disk to use. I thought maybe as it works when using the boot camp icon from Windows but not the restart button, it may be related, but in OSX and Windows both are set to startup in OSX on HD. So no further joy.
Maybe someone else will come along who can understand the Console logs. Why does the loginwindow and Security Agent take so long?
Do you guys have any clues from your Console system logs? Does yours hang on loginwindow?
The fact that there are so few people with the same problem suggests to me that there is a third party device/preference/ hidden file somewhere that is having an effect and it's not an Apple issue.
I am getting close to wiping the hard drive and starting again....but live in hope.
    Cheers

  • Please Help, After Kernel panic restart failed- apple swirl(6 hrs), SafeMode-failed, SUMode-sucess. Could not unmount disk to erase. Repair permissions-multiple fail errors:unable to set permissions on... unable to set owner and group...

Please Help, I deleted an account that was the same name as the administrator but was not the administrator. Also a samsung galaxy s phone was charging through the usb port.
I closed out a program and got a message that the temp file could not be stored/saved.
Then a Kernel panic message occurred and restart was necessary.
The restart resulted in the screen with the apple logo and a continous swirl for 6+hrs,
Attempted Safe Mode start up, unsuccessful,
    Single User Mode-sucess.
Ran $ fsck_hfs -rfd /dev/disk0s2 Ran several times repairs made with one which remained. something about a node.
No change in start up attempts

    Ran Repair Disk, result:

    Ran Verify Disk, result:

Next I attempted to erase the dist to start from scratch since I have data backed up on time machine.
    Error message box
    Volume Erase failed
    Volume Erase failed with error:
    Could not unmount disk
I am looking to solve without buying DiskWarrior unless only resort.

So it looks like  solved it for now I will update later. What I did was after starting from the install cd for the 10.6 system I ran from terminal ran:
    diskutil disablejournaling /dev/disk0s2
    diskutil disableownership /dev/disk0s2
    diskutil repairPermissions /dev/disk0s2
then i closed terminal and then when to disk utility and chose to repair disk with results all was fine. Then ran repair permissions and got similar results from terminal function next I erased disk and then chose to restore from time machine and it is now restoring! yea!

  • Restart Fails after Software Update

For the past few weeks (I cannot tie down when this started), after carrying out any download that requires a restart through Software Update when I click on the Restart Button the menu bar disappears but the machine will not restart. If I leave it for a minute I get the message that restart has timed out as software update failed to quit. From here on in I cannot do a shutdown or restart from the Apple Menu, I have to do a hard shutdown by powering off. When I power back on the restart happens normally but no software is installed. After I logon I can then select restart from the Apple Menu and I then get the dialog box that gives me the option to install updates and restart or just restart. Selecting Install Updates and restart then works as normal. After restarting again logoff, shutdown and restart options from the Apple menu all work as normal, until I do a software update that requires a restart..... Anyone any ideas on how to fix this? It only happens on my MacBook Pro (migrated originally from Tiger), not on my relatively new iMac which was Leopard from new.

Exactly the same issue too on a iMac G5 upgraded from 10.4, started few weeks ago, very annoying. Makes the usually painless updates a lot more painful.

  • Restart fail - grey screen

Two failed updates. Downloads and seems to install ok but hangs after the 'restart to complete' leaving just a blank grey screen and my mouse cursor. Prior to that the progress bar only reaches about a third before vanishing. Disconnected all other devices, did all the recommended grey screen trouble shoots - same result. All was well with Mavericks. Anyone any bright ideas? Thanks.

Resolved eventually - had to restart in Safe Mode. Then made sure I backed everything in Time Machine. After which I restarted again (in normal mode) and after disconcertingly pausing again about a third of the way through the progress bar (held breath), I was finally able to access the new Yosemite interface as expected.
No idea what the issue was - the upgrade moved one Apple file to the 'incompatible software' folder and marked Apple's own MainStage software as incompatible but left it (I later deleted it to be safe).
Mmm... user status feedback for the process not good, especially the dodgy progress bar and at one point (I now forget where) I was viewing flashing images of my wireless mouse and trackpad with no idea what was expected i.e. they were already switched on. Indeed, both were rendered useless and I could not progress until I dug out an old USB mouse to let me click the next install screen.

  • Restarting failed BPEL instances in production

    1. Assume there are 1000 transactions per hour. If one of the 3rd party services is down (say Oracle Apps) for an hour and 1000 bpel instances have failed, How do we restart the failed 1000 instances at the same time (or in a single click)? We want to avoid the administrator going and starting each BPEL instances separately.
    2. If the BPEL flow has 10 activities in the flow and all instances have failed in the 6th activity (calling Oracle Apps Adapter service), when we restart the failed instance, Will it again redo the first 5 activities or will it start exactly from where it failed?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    You said:

It could be that processes are restarted by the BPEL PM by itself. Otherwise the message of the instances are recorded in the dehydration store. You can recover the message from this recover area via the BPEL console. You can selected them all and recover them at once. Or you create a Java program using the BPEL API to perform this. BUT it all depends on your process design! If a process fails, it should go into the exception flow and handled by the exception process, aka error-hosipital. If processes should be re-started you must design it.
    2. If the BPEL flow has 10 activities in the flow and all instances have failed in the 6th activity (calling Oracle Apps Adapter service), when we restart the failed instance, Will it again redo the first 5 activities or will it start exactly from where it failed?
It depends in the process-type; synchronous or a-synchronous. A synchronous process will fail and restarteing should be done via the calling process, because the sync process does not dehydrate. An a-sync process will de-hydrate his process state on specific aktivities; receive/invoke/wait, when a process fails it will contuniue from his last process state.

  • Restart failed - no longer able to boot

I plugged a USB external DVD (as my B&W has only a CD-Rom) in order to install OS X. I was able to get to the OS X Welcome page, wher it ask to RESTART. As the RESTART did not work, I went to the startup disk select, saw the DVD with OS X, selected it, then clicked on RESTART from the Welcome screen of OS X.
Now, surprise : all I get is a dolder with a question mark (?) blinking. The Support online here says to go back and select another startup disk, which *of course* I cannot do!
I disconnected the DVD, retried many times, there is nothing to do.
Any insight or trick so I can restart this machine ?
    Thanks,

Check firmware (see link later in post)
This may sound like an involved solution but the USB ports come online too late in the boot sequence to use as boot device.
Instead, consider replacing CD drive with a new DVD burner. You can pick up a DVD+-RW for about $40-80 at any computer store. Or open the USB burner case you have and remove the drive.
Open your B&W (power down of course)
For a temporary work around, notice that there are 2 ATA cables on the motherboard. Unplug the chain to the optical/ZIP carrier. Plug any ATA 33/66/100 cable into the system board and your DVD drive. Make sure your optical drive is set to master (check jumper settings). There are several unused power connectors in a Yikes case, use any one.
Restart with your CURRENT OS. Check system profiler to verify drive. (Burning may not be supported fix that later by visiting http://patchburn.de and get Patchburn. It installs profiles for ANY burner not Apple OE.)
Now insert your install DVD, hit restart (don't change start up disk) and hold down "C". If your B&W doesn't boot to 10.4 DVD you can release the "C" and it will boot to original drive. If is doesn't boot to 10.4 check firmware updates
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
And seriously consider installing that cheap DVD drive in your B&W. The Yikes case is really easy to upgrade. And if you are brave you can turn that G3/400 (100 FSB) into a G3/472 (105 FSB)

  • Java program to restart failed message in Adapter Engine

    Hi,
    I am using PI 7.0.
Could anyone tell me whether there is an automated job or URL I can schedule in order to periodically resend messages sitting in the Adapter Engine receive queue that are in status System Error, Holding, or Waiting?
I want to avoid having to monitor the system through message monitoring and manually resending the messages...
    Many thanks
    Brian

    Hi,
    please check this link:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/05/b1b740f83db533e10000000a155106/content.htm
    Restarting
Instead of restarting messages with errors manually with message monitoring, you can schedule a job to automatically restart these messages. This is possible for all messages for which the number of defined restart attempts has been exceeded (messages with the System Error status).
You can define one or more rules for each job to restart messages; these rules contain conditions that a message must meet in order to be restarted by the job. At least one of the defined rules must be met for archiving to take place.
    Rescheduling
A standard job to reschedule messages is created automatically. The job runs once a day and ensures that messages lost as a result of database failure, for example, are rescheduled. You can schedule additional rescheduling jobs; however, you cannot define rules for them.
