10.6.2 Server Dropping SMB Connections.

New Intel Xserve running 10.6.2 connected to Promise RAID via FC. Device works great for Mac folks, but my two Windows users can seemingly only connect for about 15 minutes at a time and the connection drops. Sometimes they can reconnect, sometimes now. Once guy is running Server 2008 (for testing/hosting) the other guys is running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit).
These guys are independent of our Windows domain and the OS X Server is purely on its own workgroup (not part of the domain either).

Mac OS X Server is using samba for Windows services, and typically people have had to alter client-side security settings to get Windows Vista, Windows 7 and therefore most probably Server 08,
in order to be able to authenticate successfully at all.

But ! To start out with the first place you should be looking is your server's logs.
What are you seeing in /var/log/samba/smbd.log & nmbd log ?

  • Server dropped connection

    Hi!
I cannot send email because the destination server drops my connection.
In mail.log I get the following entry:
"... server dropped connection without sending the initial SMTP greeting)"
Does anybody know what I can do that my mail server connection is accepted?
    Br
    Gerhard

I tried it with two different mail servers: gmx and chello - as you can see below. But it didn't work. I tried with squirrlmail and apple mail - no success.
    Here is my mail.log:

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite I am getting frequently "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again"

Since upgrading to Yosemite on my iMac I am frequently getting "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again". This is with both a WiFi and Ethernet connection. The server is working fine from other devices using WiFi onto it such as iPhones, iPads, MacBook (which is also on Yosemite) so don't believe its an issue with the server.
I am also noticing page load very slowly when this problem is not occurring.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • SMB connection attempt switches to WebDAV unexpectedly when connecting to OSX server

With Windows 8.1, I can connect to my OSX 10.9.5 Server share point by opening File Explorer, typing:  \\<fqdn> and hitting return.  I will be prompted for server credentials and when I enter them, I will see the share point.
With Window 10, if I do the same thing, instead of seeing the shareppoint, I see a blank Windows Explorer screen with "This folder is empty".
I contacted Apple with a tcpdump from this and they said that Windows 10 is attempting to connect over HTTP instead of SMB:
ACTION: Windows is handling the connection incorrectly by attempting to use Webdav instead of SMB.
STATUS: As with any other 3rd party integration cases, we attempt to identify an issue as either an issue to a 3rd party product, or to identify and isolate the issue in
    the Apple product.
In packet 64 the client sends an SMB 1 negotiate request (expected).  In packet 66 the server responds in SMB 2 with the SMB 2 features it supports
(expected).  In packet 67 the client sends the SMB 2 negotiation request (expected).  In packet 69 the server responds with the SMB2 negotiation response (expected).
Normally at this point the client will send an authentication attempt in SMB 2 using one of the authentication types provided by the server in packets 66 or 69.  Instead
the Windows client sends a tcp connection reset in packet 70 (unexpected).  In packet 74 the windows client initiates a connection over HTTP (extremely unexpected).
The above pattern repeats several times in the tcpdump.
The mac server never presented any HTTP information in the SMB packets.  This appears to be a purely Windows 10 issue.
If I connect to the server by typing:  \\<fqdn>\sharepoint  -- then I do connect, but the OSX server does not indicate this is an SMB connection, so it must be a WebDav connection (which would be incredibly wrong...)
If this is a settings issue in Windows 10 that is forcing an HTTP connection over an SMB attempt -- can somebody point me where to look?

  • After upgrade to Yosemite SMB connection to remote server no longer works. WHY?

    HI,
Before I upgraded to Yosemite I had mapped a connection to a directory on a remote server using SMB.  After upgrading from OS 10.9 these connections no longer work.
Any idea why?  Nothing on either the remote network server or the SMB mapping has changed.

There appears to be a problem with Firefox 20 with UNC paths when using roaming profiles on a server.
This is currently investigated and tracked via this bug report.

    Hi!
I'm having the same problem here. Tried to delete cache and disable all internet plugins, but that didn't help either. However, I created a clean new user and tried to surf those pages from that account and it worked flawlessly. Thus I think that there's something messed up with my user account. Any ideas anybody?

  • Server dropped connection without sending the initial SMTP greeting

Whenever anyone tries to send email to addresses from the domain 'cwbank.com' they receive the error emessage:
connect to smtp.ab.tac.net[216.123.224.167]: server dropped connection without sending the initial SMTP greeting
If I use other mail servers, the message goes through without a hitch.
Prior to this week we could send email to this domain.
Port 25 is open on the receiving server (216.123.224.167).
A few weeks ago, we were 'blacklisted' because another server on the same subnet was spamming. And a few ISPs (Godaddy, 1and1, etc.) blacklisted the whole subnet instead of the offending IP. We don't seem to be having any more problems with getting RBL rejections anymore. Typically those error messages were returned as '550 RBL rejection' errors. I'm wondering if this might be related.
Any other thoughts on the subject?

Well, the other thing that could be happening is that the mail servers at these 4 IPs might have their own hardwired IP block on some range of IPs that you are in. We know that is not being done at their firewall (you can connect and get the greeting), but might be done with, for example, a postfix config that prohibits connections from certain IP ranges.
There's another possibility, namely, that they are picky about DNS config. Your IP of 68.150.192.151 seems to have a good reverse DNS PTR record that matches the SMTP HELO greeting when I telnet to your server:
    mail:~ admin$ telnet 68.150.192.151 25
    Trying 68.150.192.151...

    220 mail.boxclever.ca ESMTP Postfix
    quit
    221 Bye
    Connection closed by foreign host.

Maybe they won't talk to any server whose name given in the Reverse DNS PTR record doesn't have an A Record that matches. You might want to check that.

  • Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L

    Hi!
I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
    100% repeatable scenarios:
    ## Scenario 1 ##
    1) Log in
    2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
    3) Check that it has connected
    4) Lock screen (Win+L)
    5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
    6) Unlock screen (using password)
    7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
    ## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
    1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
    2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
    3) Start copying files from computer to server
    4) Lock the screen on computer
    5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
    6) Unlock screen on the computer
    7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
    timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.

    Best regards,

Same issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
    Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.

  • 10.9 Server Filesharing - Duplicate connected user

Fresh install of 10.9 Server - Did not migrate settings from previous server install *just because*.  User environment < 10 people.  We use file sharing, server time machine, and CardDAV.  No need for anything else.
From the beginning, had major problem with filesharing borking saved files for all osx users connected over samba.  Lovely.  Had no idea how to fix or why osx clients weren't connecting over AFP, so I partitioned a section for the occasional bootcamp user and turned off samba for the rest of the network drives.
Now I've got Kerbos authentication failures for the network scanner that sends files to a SMB dropbox share point setup on the server.  A server restart fixes this, but restarting file sharing does not.  On top of that, I've got persisting permissions that seem to manifest in screwed up Numbers files (09', the version that doesn't suck) I can open and edit files, but copy/paste doesn't work nor does it allow you to add a new table unless you copy the file to the desktop.  Then no problem with the file.... otherwise no other finder permissions problems - messed up huh?
When I go to try to figure this out this morning - now I see this.
So - Seriously?  I've got one user with over 300 duplicate filesharing connections.  This stuff just used to work despite my lack of experience.  So Apple Community looking for advice - My choices are:
    1. Hire a professional to fix this.  (where do I find one?  Last time I brought in a professional from a local authorized repair shop to fix a previous permissions problem, their answer was, "yeah, ACL's don't work right, you should just use POSIX".  Yeah, thanks, I already knew ACLs weren't working - that's why I called you)
    2. Rebuild the server from the beginning. (what went wrong the last time? Since the last time I setup OSX server, the only thing different this time was that I didn't use workgroup manage to create user profiles because it seemed like it was built into the Server app.  So if I rebuild should I go to yosemite or downgrade to Lion, which seemed to work fine?)
    3. Fix or live with the problems (Any ideas on how to fix, Apple Community?)
    4. Quit. (anyone have a job opening in my field that pays 2x what I make now and doesn't involve relocating or screwing around with this stuff? didn't think so)
    Message was edited by: sgladfelter

    I do use 3.2.2.
I turned off SMB to my main share point, and left it on for the share point the scanner (which uses an unknown version of the SMB protocol) is setup to drop files on.  The scanner worked for a couple of weeks and then randomly quit - in Console I see Kerbos authentication failures when attempting to connect.  A server restart seemed to fix this problem a couple of times, but it has since quit and I've sort of let this problem go.
A restart also fixed the duplicate connections, and so far hasn't cropped up again.  I'm still getting Kerbos authentication failures for my CardDAV accounts and my SMB connections, as stated above.
I haven't gone to yosemite yet since my current setup is working.  The $20 upgrade doesn't phase me.  I'd gladly throw $200 down if it worked as well as it did in snow leopard.  As it is, I feel like I may as well be running linux for the amount of time I've had to spend in a shell the last couple of months.
Still debating on going back to Lion.  The thing that ***** about this is that when I was considering the downgrade, I realized that since I installed Mavericks on the same machine, albeit a separate drive, the apple recovery utility will now boot into Mavericks instead of Lion as it did before.  So now I've got no way to re-install Lion since disks weren't included.  I can still use the old installation, but that is plagued by problems of an entirely different nature (prompting the update in the first place).
I sure this whole environment we have now is intentional, but I don't see how its beneficial to the user.  Its analogous to the iDevice marketplace - when you update an app and it gets worse or doesn't work at all, you have no way of going backwards to a previous version.  This wouldn't bother me if you're talking about a free app.  But when I pay for an app and the developer adds in advertisement down the road or breaks it for my iOS version (I don't update my phone either) - well lets just say that in the ideal "user bill of rights" we should have the right to decide whether to use a newer version or go back to the old one.

  • MacBook Air + Time Capsule  frequently dropping internet connection

I too have been having frequently dropped wireless connections between my MacBook Air (MBA) and my Time Capsule(TC). My TC is connected to a cable modem and I also have an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) at a different part of my house which is used to extend my network connecting via ethernet to a PC running VISTA, and wirelessly to a printer and an older MacBook. I also connect wirelessly to my home network with two iPhones, a Squeezebox 3 with a server running on the PC. I have an Apple TV and a Squeezebox 2 connected to my TC via ethernet.
When my connection drops I will either see a Time Capsule disconnect message or if I am surfing the web, the browser just hangs. The wireless ICON strength is still pegged a the max level. None of my other devices (wireless or ethernet) connected to the TC or the other AEBS seem to drop their internet connections. I can re-establish the connection on my MBA by either turning off my MBA's Airport wireless and then turning it back on or by running the network diagnostics. The latter method usually shows green lights for all but the "Internet" and the "Server" which will have yellow lights. Usually when I select my wireless network and press continue, it will prompt for my WPA2 password which I have to reenter even though I always check the box for it to remember the password in the keychain.
After reading the various discussions on disconnect problems and trying the various "solutions" I was still having the disconnect problem.
Last night, I decided to turn off my Time Capsule and was then able to maintain an internet connection for considerably longer than before. Perhaps it was one of the other "solutions" that caused that. After turning my TC back on, the disconnect problem reoccurred within about 5 minutes.
Next, I did my too frequent Time Capsule remedy which was to disconnect the power and then reconnect the power. (Seems like some of these devices (APPLE TV included) could use power switches.) I then deleted the .sparsebundle backup file on the Time Capsule. I was then able to restart Time Capsule backup and things have been running uninterrupted for over 12 hours...still backing up (20GB in 12 hours? Doesn't seem very fast!). I can report back later if this actually "fixes" my disconnect problems in the future. I am dubious that it will.
I have several questions about the MBA and the TC/Time Machine backup operation.
1.) I often forget about the TC when I close the lid on my MBA and haul it off to work. At work (connecting via ethernet), I will eventually get a TC disconnect error. But I am wondering if there are points in the backup process where a random disconnect will cause some sort of TC corruption. What is the recommended way of handling this? Should I always stop the Time Machine backup before turning off my MBA? (A nuisance if so!)
2.) What is happening when the TC backup operation stops functioning and hangs up the MBA's internet connection? (I see lots of messages logged in the system log when this happens; but, of course, I don't have much of a clue of which ones are normal and which are not normal. I could send a copy of the logs when it happens next (I am assuming it will).
Also one other anecdote. A few months back, I had taken another AEBS to my work to use during a training conference. My MBA kept dropping its connection while the other PC laptops in the room maintained their connections...(very embarrassing!). Maybe one of the other "solutions" would have fixed the problem or maybe if I had just turned off my Time Machine backup it would not have disconnected. I will repeat that exercise when I get a chance now that I have some things to try.
It seems pretty clear to me from my own experiences and the discussion reports of others that the disconnect problem lies in the MBA's wireless internet connection software or the configuration of it. It seems like it is having difficulty recovering from various wireless connection "mishaps".

Folks, I was having a very similar problem for the last 6 months. My connection was fine until June 2008, after which my Macbook and my Time Capsule would constantly conflict. If I rebooted or reset the TC, or the MB, things would be fine for a few minutes or sometimes a few hours and the problem would recur soon thereafter. About a month ago, I had to do a clean reinstall and the problem vanished for about 5 days, after which it reappeared. My MB never had a problem at work, or at someone else's home or with other routers, only with TC. Apple sent me a new TC, then they replaced my Airport card but the situation did not change ... UNTIL ABOUT AN HOUR AGO.
An hour ago, I called Apple for the nth time in the last 6 months, and the rep heard me out (just like the previous n-1 reps). He then asked me to to System Preferences --> Accounts --> Login Items and asked if Real Player Downloader showed up in my list. Indeed it did. He asked me to remove it, and told me that Apple had just figured out that the Real Player downloader was recently found to be causing a drop in the connection between Macbooks and the TC (as well Airport Express).
The problem I've been having baffled everyone. All the previous reps, the guys at the Genius Bars, nobody had a clue. Joe (the rep I spoke with this morning) seemed very confident that the removal of the Real Player Downloader from the list of login items would resolve the problem. So far, so good. My connection seems solid (its only been an hour, but earlier it would drop after 5 minutes of use).
I hope my problem that (literally!) used up hundreds of hours of my time has been finally resolved. I hope this solution will work for at least some of you as well. What gives me hope is that this solution is logically consistent with the history of my problems. I probably first downloaded Real Player in June 2008. And when I did a clean install, I remember downloading Real Player a few days after the reinstall. So I'm pretty hopeful that my issue has been finally resolved.
Shame on Real Player for putting out a defective piece of software. And thank you Joe!

  • After upgrade my MBP from snow leopard to mountain lion all my smb connections stop to work.

After upgrade my MBP from snow leopard to mountain lion all my smb connections stop to work.
Now iám using mac os 10.8.2
I can see the server, I can choose the drive, but when try to open a folder the message on Finder is: You don't have permissions to see the content.
I already delete the key and try to connect again, but the problem persist. Already try change the ip from file server. Already try differents users. (admin, guest, etc...)
I have a windows server 2008 and a NAS working with SMB protocol. Both with the same problem.
That problem occurs only on Finder, if I try see the folder by Terminal, is possible to see my files.
    Any Solution ?
    Any Tip ?
    Any Question ?

Not knowing how much RAM is installed in your iMac, your iMac can take a total of 8 GBs of RAM.
Before upgrading to Mountain Lion, I would strongly suggest installing the maximum 8 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Here is OWC's link to your model iMac and the RAM modules you will need.macsales

You can purchase and download OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store in the OS X dock.
Before installing, it would be prudent to make a backup copy of all of your important data or your entire current system. Either using, optical discs, USB flash drives or external hard drives.
This is too insure protection of your data in case something goes wrong with the install of OS X Mountain Lion.
    Good Luck!

  • I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my MacBook. Constantly dropping internet connection or message "error connecting to the network" comes up. No wireless connectivity issues with windows 7 laptop or iphone.

I have a MacBook with Snow Leopard 10.6.8. The last few weeks it has been constantly dropping internet connection, and one of these messages appear on the page: "Safari cannot open this page because the server where this page is located isn't responding" or "Safari cannot open this page because you are not connected to the internet" comes up. I will check Wifi and I am connected. No wifi connectivity issues with iphone or windows 7 laptop, this doesn't happen with either of those devices. I have unplugged and reset router, cleared cache, still happening. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

HI,As you said Its dropped off from domain meaning it already disconnected the connection from AD.Thats why UPA is not working.Once the server is added back to Domain,The UPA will not connect to automatically. So iwould suggest to create the UPA connections
again and crawl the Import.Check the below link on the issue with UPA.
